Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) encouraged more women to pursue studies and careers in sports and engineering. The initiative seeks to increase female representation in two fields that have traditionally been dominated by men while creating greater opportunities for women to contribute, innovate, and succeed.

As part of this effort, UNNES introduced its sports and engineering study programs to students of MA NU Banat Kudus on Thursday (August 6). MA NU Banat Kudus is an all-girls Islamic senior high school in Kudus, with students coming from various regions across Indonesia.

During the program, UNNES representatives presented the curriculums and career opportunities offered by both disciplines. The session also invited students to rethink the common perception that sports and mechanical engineering are fields better suited for men, highlighting that women have the ability and potential to excel in both areas.

The students were also given the opportunity to experience the practical side of the two disciplines by operating measurement instruments used in sports science and engineering. The activity showcased how technological innovation has transformed these fields, making them increasingly modern, accessible, and inclusive for women.

The outreach program was attended by 338 twelfth-grade students from MA NU Banat Kudus, who showed great enthusiasm throughout the event. Interacting with female role models from sports and engineering inspired many of them to consider pursuing higher education and professional careers in these fields.

“We are opening the door as wide as possible for female students to pursue sports and engineering. Both fields offer excellent opportunities and promising career prospects for women,” said Dr. Surahmat, Head of Public Relations at UNNES.

Kaleb Priyanto, a lecturer in Mechanical Engineering Education at UNNES, explained that engineering is no longer synonymous with physically demanding or dirty work. At the undergraduate level, students are equipped with knowledge and skills in design, planning, analysis, and innovation, making engineering a field that is equally suitable for women.

A similar message was delivered by Wiga Nurlatifa from the Sports Coaching Education Program. She encouraged the students to explore the wide range of career opportunities in sports, emphasizing that the industry extends far beyond becoming an athlete to include professions such as coach, personal trainer, and other sports practitioners.

“Today, the sports industry offers more opportunities than ever for women. There is no reason to hesitate about building your future in this field,” she said.

Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) officially commenced the construction of a new eight-storey building for the Faculty of Education and Psychology (FIPP) on Monday, 20 July 2026.

The project reflects the University’s commitment to providing high-quality educational infrastructure to strengthen academic excellence and support its long-term institutional development.

UNNES Rector Prof. Dr. S. Martono, M.Si. emphasised the importance of ensuring that the construction is carried out with precision while remaining fully aligned with the University’s existing campus master plan.

“I expect the construction to be fully aligned with the existing campus spatial plan to prevent technical issues in the future. This development was originally planned before UNNES attained the status of a Legal Entity State University (PTNBH), and its implementation demonstrates our commitment to consolidating and enhancing the facilities of the main campus,” he said.

Dean of the Faculty of Education and Psychology Prof. Dr. Edy Purwanto, M.Si. stated that adequate academic facilities and infrastructure are essential to advancing the University’s internationalisation agenda.

“Improving our performance in the QS World University Rankings and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings remains one of our primary goals. Therefore, it is essential to provide appropriate facilities for research and academic centres,” he said.

He added that although the project was initiated later than other infrastructure developments, the extended planning process has resulted in a more comprehensive and well-prepared design that will better support the faculty’s future development.

Head of the UNNES Procurement Services Office, Dr. Untoro Nugroho, S.T., M.T., explained that the construction project will be implemented in two phases.

“The first phase will run from this year until the end of November, covering the structural works and façade construction. The second phase will take place from January to May, focusing on interior works as well as mechanical and electrical installations,” he explained.

He also requested the understanding of the University community should teaching and learning activities experience minor disruptions during the construction period.

Another proud achievement has been made by a student at Semarang State University (UNNES). Nayla Shafavirly Arifianti, a student in the Psychology Program UNNES, won the title of Puteri Kebaya Indonesia 2026 at the 3rd Puteri Kebaya Indonesia pageant. This victory makes Nayla the first woman to win the grand crown for Central Java Province and the first winner to wear a hijab in the pageant’s history.

Nayla’s journey to the national stage began in mid-2025 through regional-level selections. Regarding her dedication and preparation, she earned the title of 1st Runner-Up for Puteri Kebaya Central Java and was chosen to represent Central Java 2 at the national competition.

During the quarantine period leading up to the grand final, which took place on July 2–4, 2026, at the Merapi Merbabu Hotel in Yogyakarta, Nayla and the other finalists participated in a variety of activities, including a sashing ceremony, photo and video shoot challenges, in-depth interviews, a gala dinner, and charity events. On the second day, the finalists went on a city tour to Prambanan Temple and participated in preliminary rounds that included a talent show, a catwalk challenge, an advocacy speech, and a choreography class in preparation for the grand final night.

The Puteri Kebaya Indonesia pageant is an event aimed at discovering young women who can serve as pioneers in preserving the kebaya as a cultural heritage while strengthening the nation’s identity. The competition does not focus solely on appearance; it also evaluates intellectual capacity, leadership, social awareness, and advocacy programs that benefit the community.

As an implementation of her commitment to cultural preservation and women’s empowerment, Nayla launched the KEMBANG (Kebaya Empowerment: Beauty, Action, Nation, Grace) movement with the hashtag #PerempuaNAYuBERKEBAYA on National Kebaya Day, July 24, 2025. This movement stems from the #LoveYourself campaign that she conceived in 2020 to encourage women to be more confident and recognize their potential. This commitment is also realized through the empowerment of PKK mothers in Dologan Village and cultural education for children through the Roro Jonggrang folktale, all while wearing the kebaya.

For Nayla, the title of Puteri Kebaya Indonesia is not merely a personal achievement but a mandate to continue inspiring the younger generation to take pride in the nation’s culture and to have the courage to play a role in empowering the community. This achievement also serves as proof that UNNES students are capable of excelling at the national level by presenting works, ideas, and concrete actions that have a positive impact on society and the preservation of Indonesian culture.

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES), in collaboration with PAMA Group, planted 2,000 mangrove seedlings in the coastal area of Mangunharjo, Tugu District, Semarang City, on Thursday (25 June 2026).

The activity was carried out in partnership with the Mangrove Lestari Farmers Group, which provided the mangrove seedlings and technical assistance throughout the planting process. This collaboration reflects a strong synergy between industry, academia, and local communities in supporting coastal ecosystem restoration and climate change mitigation.

The mangrove planting initiative was part of the PAMA Group Media Gathering 2026, which promoted the spirit of collaboration for sustainability. In addition to strengthening relationships with journalists from national and local media outlets, the event served as a tangible effort to rehabilitate coastal ecosystems, reduce coastal abrasion, and enhance blue carbon sequestration.

The event was attended by Abdul Nasir Maksum, Director of PT Pamapersada Nusantara, accompanied by TH. Puguh Susatyo, SRGS Division Head of PT Pamapersada Nusantara, along with members of the management teams from companies within PAMA Group. Their participation demonstrated the company’s commitment to supporting environmental conservation through collaboration with universities and local communities.

Representing FMIPA UNNES were Dean Prof. Edy Cahyono, Vice Dean for Academic Affairs and Student Affairs Zaenal Abidin, Vice Dean for Planning and Resources Dr. Isnarto, and Vice Dean for Business, Research, and Cooperation Prof. Sutikno. Also in attendance was Prof. Nana Kariada Tri Martuti, Head of the UNNES Conservation Subdirectorate and a lecturer at FMIPA, who has actively developed various coastal conservation and mangrove ecosystem rehabilitation programs.

The activity also involved Dr. Andhina Putri Heriyanti, Head of the Undergraduate Environmental Science Study Program; Dr. Fidia Fibriana, Head of the Undergraduate Science Education Study Program; and several FMIPA lecturers, including Abdul Jabbar, faculty advisor of the ILING Project, Trida Ridho Fariz, Hendra Febriyanto, and Amnan Haris, together with other members of the academic community. Students from the Undergraduate Environmental Science Study Program participating in the ILING Project were actively involved from the planning stage through field implementation.

Also participating was Vania F. Herlambang, Puteri Indonesia Lingkungan 2018 and an environmental advocate, who encouraged participants to strengthen their commitment to mangrove conservation. She emphasized that mangrove planting is not merely a ceremonial activity but a long-term investment in environmental sustainability and future generations through collaboration among all sectors of society.

The collaboration among FMIPA UNNES, PAMA Group, and the Mangrove Lestari Farmers Group supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), SDG 15 (Life on Land), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), by strengthening partnerships among higher education institutions, industry, and local communities to promote sustainable development.

Through this collaboration, FMIPA UNNES continues to strengthen its role as a higher education institution that not only advances innovation through education and research but also makes tangible contributions to environmental conservation and sustainable development through strategic partnerships with diverse stakeholders.
