We spent the weekend lazily, going to an outlet mall, having some coffee at Starbucks, and just enjoying the autumn weather in general. I was almost too lazy to take outfit photos but then I thought it could be the last chance to wear a light cotton dress without a cardigan or something. So we went to a nearby park to snap some photos at the last minute just before the sun went down. While I'm excited for the cooler weather and all the layering possibilities, I'll miss those early-autumn days when I can play around with autumn accessories with a simple outfit.

This outfit was inspired by this beautiful lady. I like how she styled the dress with the white socks and masculine shoes, but because my dress has a longer hemline, I chose to wear grey tights that would harmonize with the subdued colors of the dress. These shoes are my recent favorite. They have not-so-tall chunky heels that are comfortable enough to walk around all day, and I like how they match the round bag that I carry for everyday use.

Random photos from the day trip to Tanba-Sasayama . . .

This was the typical view of the town. I loved the blue sky!

We had great lunch at this place. In spite of the old looking (the straw-thatched house was originally built 400 years ago), the inside was pretty modern and comfortable to eat at.

Bunches of onions were hung under the eaves.

Entree of the course, consisting of delicious side dishes featuring local vegetables.

One of the wild boar butchers in the town, which I found interesting.

Vintage enamel signs, which presumably dates back to the 1960-70s.

The sun was almost set by the time we were leaving, so we were lucky enough to be treated to a beautiful twilight.

A pretty (well, maybe not) wild boar was at the bridge to send us off.

Day Trip to Tanba-Sasayama

Last Saturday we made a day trip to Tanba-Sasayama, a former castle town surrounded by mountains. The weather turned hot again that day, almost like midsummer in the daytime, but the golden harvest color of rice fields was a sure sign of fall. We walked along the main street with its old shops, which still retain the quaint charm of the old days. Some of the shops were selling yummy-looking snacks that use local ingredients (like black beans), and I only regret I couldn't eat as much as I wanted to, after having a full course meal at an Italian restaurant.

This dress is one of my recent etsy purchases, and I like the fact that it keeps me cool in this prolonged heat while making me feel fall-ish. It has a pretty mustard yellow color, though I'm not sure if the photos did it justice. I paired the dress with socks in a darker shade of mustard yellow to match the dress. I pretty much like the short socks with shoes style, but I think I have to be careful when I wear short socks as they seem to make my short legs look even shorter!

It's been a while, again! I hope everyone is doing fine. Due to the prolonged heat wave and intermittent rain showers and headache caused thereby, I haven't got a chance to take outfit photos lately, but I still have some random photos from the recent trip to Yokohama, so here they are.

Port Opening Memorial Hall (and a man painting a picture of it). You will easily find people painting pictures of such historic buildings in Yokohama.

Yokohama Archives of History, a small museum whose building was originally a British Consulate.

It was too hot to keep walking outside, so we stopped by a cafe attached to the museum. I loved the calm atmosphere.

We then had an early lunch at my old favorite Scandinavian restaurant called Scandia Garden. I love the retro decor.

I ordered open sandwiches. They always amaze me with the variety of the ingredients.

On another day I went to a classic hotel called Hotel New Grand with my mom.

We had a relaxed time over the afternoon tea.

Yokohama Pier

Last weekend we went on a short trip to Yokohama, where I grew up and my family still lives. It was great to see my family and friends doing very well, especially since my last visit there was awful because of the earthquake. We were so busy catching up with friends that we didn't have much time to spend between two of us, except on Saturday morning when we took a stroll around the waterfront area of Yokohama. On our way we happened to see an exhibition of the latest Studio Ghibli film "From Up On Poppy Hill", which is set in Yokohama in the 60s. It was small but interesting enough to make me feel like watching the film, even though I'm not much of a fan of recent Ghibli films.

I was determined to wear this vintage skirt on this trip, partly because its longer hemlim seemed appropriate to visit an office I used to work at, and partly because its nautical theme seemed perfect to wander around the port city of Yokohama. The bag is a new etsy find. I found it when I was randomly looking for mod bags for fall and instantly fell in love with it. I'd been meaning to wait until the weather gets cooler, but it arrived in the mail just the day before we left and because it matched so perfectly with this skirt, I had to pack it in the suitcase instead of a plain red bag I'd been planning to bring.

Rokko

Some random photos from the visit to Mt. Rokko.

At a cafe where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the city of Kobe. It was nice, albeit a bit foggy.

Beautifully decorated cheesecake. It was as good as it looks.

Balloon flower, whose pistil I found pretty.

Grape-like flower, which is uncommon here and I think is an alpine plant. (Edit: A kind person on flickr suggested it's "butterfly bush").

Slightly-faded white hydrangea, which I rather like.

Salmon pink rose. I love roses in such soft shades.

An owl made presumably of some plant fibers, standing in front of the souvenir shop.

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/kansairetro/~3/__8BzYn3Bjc/random-photos-day-on-mt-rokko.html" title="Random Photos: A Day on Mt.

This past weekend, we drove up to Mt. Rokko to chill ourselves. It seemed it was not only us who came up with the idea, because the observatory on the plateau was full of tourists. We looked for a less-crowded place to take photos and ended up with this not-very-fancy place. I loved hearing the sounds of insects singing as we were walking to the bush, though. The temperature there seems to be cooler than where I live by around 5 degrees, so it was even a bit chilly after the sun set. There were some hydrangeas still in bloom, which made me slip back to a month ago, when we were not yet suffering from the heat.

A blue sailor blouse had been on my wishlist ever since I saw one in Nadinoo spring/summer collection 2011. I didn't have any luck in finding a moderately-priced, age-appropriate one, until I found this blouse in a local shop at a pretty low price. With the small peter pan collar and narrow white piping, it's pretty on its own, but I added the navy blue ribbon (which was originally attached to a skirt) around the collar to link with the navy blue shorts.

Blouse: Lawrys Farm
Shorts: Uniqlo

When I was reading an old magazine on my iPad late at night, I saw an aqueduct in Kyoto that I'd been forgetting to visit and decided to go the next morning. It was built in the late 1800s to resemble a Roman aqueduct, and is still used to bring water from Lake Biwa to the city. I'm sure it looked incompatible at that time, because it's located on the grounds of Nanzenji Temple, which are in a serene atmosphere that I think is characteristic of a Zen temple. Now that the time has passed, the old mossy bricks give a rustic charm and somehow match the very Japanese surroundings quite well.

I found this dress from the back of my closet and decided to wear it, although I admit it's not quite suitable for summer. It's presumably made of acrylic so it's rather warm, but I like this bright shade of orange to wear in summer. Also, it was ridiculously hot that day, so I suppose it was hot no matter what you wore. When we were driving home from Kyoto, I even saw a thermometer that said 40 degrees (!), and I'm not sure how accurate it was, but it sure felt that hot.

Last weekend we finally made it to an aquarium that I'd been wanting to go for a while. I went to the same aquarium long ago, when my family and I visited my grand parents for the summer vacation. Everything - from the entrance wall of marine animals to the huge sharks swimming in the pool - looked almost the same as I recall in my memory, which was kind of weird. I don't know if I enjoyed as much as I did as a kid, but I was glad to revisit the place of my childhood memories.

I fell in love with this dress when I saw it hanging in the shop back in may. I've been trying not to buy new clothes in full price, but I couldn't resist this one because of the pale blue color and the puffed sleeves and all the lovely details on the front. Also, it kind of reminds me of the pretty dresses that Summer from (500) Days of Summer wears. I was slightly shocked to find the same dress on the sale rack recently, but it was only in white and ecru, so I'm trying to convince myself that the pale blues were sold out.

On the fifth day morning, we enjoyed another great croissant at Paul, which was crisp and nice. It tasted a bit different from the ones I buy here in Japan, and I'm guessing it's because of water.

I took this photo thinking the building was beautiful and then knew that it was La Conciergerie, where hundreds of prisoners were kept during the French Revolution before being executed. And no, I didn't have the courage to take a peek inside!

For lunch we ate at a lovely Province restaurant. I especially liked this entrée, which consisted of fresh green salad and croquettes of salty goat cheese.

It was kind of a shopping day, so I didn't take much photos. I bought the white lace dress in my last post in a boutique in the Étienne Marcel area, and browsed around some vintage shops in the Marais.

I'd been tempted to buy some flowers for our hotel room whenever I passed by a lovely flower shop in Paris, and I finally gave in. The next day was the last day so I bought only one rose.

And the sixth day was the last day. I always loved walking through this place, where the sun shines through the trees in the morning and elderly gentlemen play pétanque in the evening.

For the last breakfast in Paris, we splurged a bit at Ladurée Bonaparte, which is tastefully decorated with oriental-inspired furniture. (Sorry for keeping talking about meals. In case you don't know, I love to eat!)

I ordered the French toast, served only for breakfast, and it was as delicious as it looks. The omelette that my husband ordered was also incredibly tasty.

And then we walked around narrow alleys to Musee d'Orsay. Sadly, many of the stores were not yet open, but it was fun just to see window displays through glass.

We waited for almost an hour to enter Musée d'Orsay, but I thought it was totally worth it. After exploring the exhibitions, we had our last lunch at the lovely restaurant on the second floor, which was a great way to end the trip.

Rainy Sunday

Nothing interesting happened last week, except that I happened to find a strange book (called Wakan Sansai Zue) in a secondhand book store. It's a kind of encyclopedia, originally complied by a Japanese doctor back in the early 1700s, where things known at that time are illustrated and described. A funny thing about this book is that legendary creatures (like Kappa and Kodama) are believed to exist and listed together with common animals, like cats and owls and racoons. It's interesting how they acquired such detailed profiles, even though nobody has actually seen them, or at least caught them alive!

I recently got this bag online, wondering if it's too cute for my age. Then a few days after that, when I got on a train, I saw an elderly lady who was wearing a black classic hat and a straw bag with a black sequin heart in a chic, classic way and I fell in love with her style. I was so fascinated with her hat and bag that I don't remember what clothes she was wearing, but she convinced me that my sequin bow bag could be worn chic too. I usually wear this dress in black and white, but it was a rainy, gloomy day so I added a pair of pink socks to brighten up the day a bit.

Several months ago, I was contacted by an editor of Weldon Owen Publishers, to contribute to a book featuring fashion bloggers from around the world. The book was recently published under the title of Style Yourself, and they were kind enough to send me a copy.

This lovely book features 95 bloggers from around the world, including Jane Aldridge of Sea of Shoes, Tavi of Style Rookie, Susie of Style Bubble, and many more. I seriously don't think I ever deserve to be one of them, but I feel so flattered and honored that I'm featured together with some of my most favorite bloggers whom I have always admired and respected. (I'm in the vintage dresses section, below Louise Ebel of Miss Pandora!)

I flipped through the pages and noticed its unique presentation, where various styles and types of clothes are categorized and showcased. It's full of tips for wearing each item in your own style, and I really enjoyed seeing and reading it. The bloggers featured in this book have their own unique style, so I also recommend it if you are looking for new blogs to follow that suit your preferences. If you are interested, you can get a copy from here.

I'm also happy to announce that I'm giving away a copy of this lovely book, courtesy of the publisher, to one lucky reader! To enter, just leave a comment below with a way to contact you (your email address, if you don't have a blog). You can also enter by writing an email to me, letting me know that you're entering the giveaway. I will randomly choose the winner after one week from today, and I will contact the winner for a shipping address. The book will be sent directly from the publisher. Good luck! (Edit: This giveaway has been closed. Thank you for participating!)

Last weekend, we drove out to a temple in an adjacent town to see hydrangea. The conditions were not ideal for walking around and taking pictures; the hydrangeas were not yet in full bloom and it was still dark and cloudy after a heavy rain. But I shouldn't complain because it didn't rain at least, and I'd been stuck at home all last week due to the rain and longing to go somewhere. Plus, flowers with rain drops have some kind of charm, aren't they?

I love the scalloped detail and the flower embroidery of this vintage blouse. I don't know what this flower is, but it surely reminds me of hydrangea because of its color, and that's why I'd been saving this blouse for when I'd got a chance to go see hydrangea. I especially love to pair it with this navy blue jumper dress to make the embroidery peek from beneath the dress, although the photos did not do it justice.

On the fourth day we visited Château de Versailles. You can enter the Palace through this entrance hall.

Hall of Mirrors, was presumably the most crowded room in the Palace. I was prepared for crowds, but it was much more crowded than I'd expected.

Due to the crowds I couldn't move around much in the Palace, but I enjoyed looking at beautiful details in each room.

The ceilings were beautifully decorated, and I again wished I had a lens with a wider angle of view. Maybe I will have to get one until I travel abroad next time.

After leaving the jam-packed palace, I was happy to get out into the spacious garden. It was sunny and the flowers were in full bloom.

We decided to take a long walk to the Grand Trianon, stopping along the way to have a sandwich and take a rest.

The Grand Trianon was less crowded and I had more time to have a look. The rooms were smaller than I thought they would be, but each room was uniquely furnished and decorated.

We took a tram to get back to the entrance of the garden. As much as I enjoyed walking through the park, I also enjoyed sitting on the tram and getting a different view.

The fountain show started just before we were leaving. It was amazing to see all the fountains in the park running.

The sculptures in the garden looked even more beautiful with the back drop of water.

Umeda Sky Building

Umeda Sky Building is one of the places I frequently go to, not for the observatory on the 40th floor but for the cinema. On the third and fourth floors of the building, there are 2 theaters with 2 small screens. They are really small, almost like a home theater, but I kind of find it comfy. On this day we saw a documentary film called Freakonomics upon request by my husband. It's not the kind of film I'd watch myself, but I found it unexpectedly interesting (but funny), and it even made me feel like reading the original books.

This weekend I organized my closet and sold a bagful of summer clothes that I no longer wear. This dress was meant to be in the to-sell list, but I'm in the mood for the pale coral color and had to keep it for myself. I think I've been pairing grey a lot lately with pale colors and wanted to use a different color, but I couldn't find a better color combination and ended up using the same color scheme. At least, it happens to make a great match with the inorganic concrete, doesn't it?

The third day was a moving day, or the last day in Monmartre. I know Paris is not a big city, but I wanted to stay in a different part of the city just for the variety.

We had breakfast at a cafe near the hotel. Few people seemed to enjoy breakfast at a cafe, so it was a good way to spend a relaxing morning.

After checking out the Montmartre hotel, we went to Clignancout, where flea markets are held on weekends. At the nearest station, I was scared to see two rugged dogs (for detecting drugs, I think), but it seemed safe once we got inside the flea markets.

In this antique print shop (is it how it's called?), my husband bought three small prints of fish. I was so tempted to buy a large architectural print of the Opera, but I was not sure if I could bring it home safely and ended up not buying it.

For lunch we ate at a restaurant in Clignancourt. I ate white asparagus for the first time as I remember. It was soft and tasty!

And then we came back to Montmartre to get the baggage and say good-bye. I really liked this place so I was slightly sad to leave it.

From the third day we stayed in a hotel located on Left Bank. I picked this hotel almost at random after finding out that our reservation at another hotel had not been made, but it turned out it was just as lovely as I'd hoped.

And then we went out into the city again. On our way to the metro station, we happened to see this lovely cat in a bistro preparing for dinner.

Before reaching the Eiffel Tower, we had a tea time at a salon de thé called Carette. In the showcase they had lots of attractive cakes, among which I chose the most familiar one: Mont Blanc!

It was already 7 o'clock at night when we arrived at the Eiffel Tower, but it was still very bright in Paris. During the 6-day stay, we were always tired and returned to the hotel around this time and ended up never seeing the city lights of Paris.

Wild Deer Park

This past weekend the weather was perfect, so we drove out to Nara, an old town known for its historic temples and roaming wild deer. We had a picnic lunch at Nara Park surrounded by deer and then bought a pile of "deer cookies" to satisfy their appetite too. After that we went to a Japanese-style cafe in a former merchant district. Inside the cafe there was a sliding door (aka fusuma) painted with lovely deer, which was made back in the Edo period. It was wonderful, and I only regret I forgot to take a picture of it.

I got this skirt on sale last winter and hadn't worn much, but since the weather got warmer I've been wearing it pretty often with simple knitted tops. I especially like to wear it with this mustard yellow top. Green and yellow are always my favorite color scheme to wear for spring. I know it's already more summer than spring, but I am still inclined toward spring-ish things, such as neutral colors and floral pattern.

The second day in Paris was a Louvre day. I thought we arrived early enough, but when we took a breakfast and got there, there was already a long-long line.

After entering the museum, we took a quick self-tour of "must-sees". It was meant to be quick, but there were so many interesting exhibitions that we had to slow down here and there.

These stairs named "Escalier Mollien" were one of the most beautiful place in the Louvre. The ceiling was also decorated with gorgeous embellishments, which my lens couldn't do justice to.

While viewing the exhibitions, I also loved looking out of the windows to see how it looked outside.

For lunch we went out of the museum to A Priori Thé, a restaurant in a beautiful passage called Galerie Vivienne, which dates back in the 1800s.

I ordered a savory tarte with cheese and tomato, and Mr. Husband ordered a Chinese-inspired dish named "Shanghai".

Palais-Royal was under repair, but I was glad to see that we could access the courtyard with the black and white columns.

After the short break, we came back to the Louvre to see the rest of the rooms. There were lots and lots of beautiful paintings at the walls, on the ceilings, and even in mirrors.

Before returning to the hotel, we sat on the terrace of Cafe Marly, inside the Louvre building, over a cup of tea and tarte tatin, watching people go by.

And then we returned to the hotel by metro. I love using metro when I visit larger cities - it's just so easy to use.

Pre-Summer Days

It's been a while again since the last update, but I hope everyone is doing fine! I'd been sick for a couple of weeks with allergies and other things. These photos were taken almost a month ago, when most of the late-blooming cherry blossoms fell away and the trees were getting greener. The weather was fine without being too hot. I kind of miss those pre-summer days, especially since the rainy season has already started where I live.

I wore the combination of the dress and the coat quite a lot this spring with flat shoes and a beret, but this time I wore them with the straw hat and the platform sandals to make them look a bit more summer-ish. I just adore the simplicity of this dress, not to mention the bird print, which always makes me smile whenever I wear it, but are subtle enough to go with many other clothes. I prefer to wear it simple most of the time, though.

Our first morning in Paris started with waking up early and having a breakfast at a cafe. The breakfast set included all of a croissant, a small baguette, and a crepe, which were a little too much but were all nice.

After leaving the cafe, we walked up the hill of Montmartre. As it was early in the morning, people were mostly jogging or walking their dogs, and I loved that "morning" feel in this area.

Soon we found a church with a beautiful white dome, known as Sacre Coeur. The view of the city was breathtaking from there.

In the square right down Sacre Coeur, there was a lovely merry-go-round as seen in Amelie.

After that we walked lazily past luxury shops along the Avenue des Champs-Élysées, a beautiful avenue that runs straight from the Arc de Triomphe.

For lunch we both ordered "Hachis Parmentier", which turned out to be a delicious dish similar to shepherd's pie.

After being stuffed, we took a stroll along the Seine, seeing the Eiffel Tower on the other bank. It was so tranquil there, and it was one of those moments that I wished I lived in Paris.

At Printemps department store, we had a drink at the brasserie on the top floor. It had the beautiful stained glass ceiling and plenty of space, and made us relaxed.

On our way to the hotel we happened to find Gustave Moreau museum and decided to drop by. It was a small museum, formerly his workshop, packed with his beautiful, dreamy paintings.

Before it got dark we returned to our petite hotel in Montmartre with the loveliest decor. I loved this hotel in every way.

At Nakanoshima Island

It's been a long time since I last updated this blog and I apologize for that! I'd been meaning to come back earlier but things had been a bit hectic and I'm surprised myself that it's already May! During my absence we went to Paris as planned. It was a lovely place beyond my expectations. In Paris I was astonished by all the old buildings, which we don't have much here in Japan (partly because we have lots of earthquakes, you know). I took tons of photos there so I will post some here when I finished editing them.

On this day we went to Nakanoshima Island, Osaka, which, by the way, was designed to resemble Cité Island in Paris. After seeing the real Cité Island, I understand how this place slightly looks like Paris, although smaller in size, and come to like it more. I'm wearing new shoes that my husband gave me for a birthday present back in March. I'd been wanting these type of platform shoes for a while so I was so glad when he kindly offered to give them to me. Plus, they're one of the most comfortable heeled shoes I've ever had.

Hello. Thank you very much for all the encouraging comments and emails. I'm so sorry I haven't been able to respond to each of them, but I've been reading them again and again when I feel depressed. It's already one week since the earthquake but I still feel like I'm dreaming a bad dream. The never-ending news reporting only dimming prospects have drained me (and many of us Japanese) both physically and emotionally, and I'm starting to feel it's time for me to take a rest by turning off the TV and listening to calm music (Do you recommend any?). I promise I will be back to my usual blogging when I get enough rest, so stay tuned, and please do not stop praying for us.

Prayer for My Country

To everyone who is kindly worried about my safety, I'm fine and alive, thank you! I was in Yokohama, where my parents reside, to attend one of my best friend's wedding. The earthquake happened soon after I arrived at Haneda Airport, Tokyo. With all the transportation system paralyzed, I had no way to go to my parents' home, and ended up staying that night at a temporary refuge. At that time I didn't know at all if I could get to my parents' home and attend the wedding party the next day, or if the wedding party would be held to begin with. Fortunately the trains started to move the next morning and I managed to go home and attend the wedding party that started in the afternoon as planned. Except for a few small tremors, the wedding was so relieved that I could almost forget what is reportedly happening in my country, even if temporarily.

Now I'm finally back at home in Kobe with my husband. Under the current circumstances where leakage of radioactivity is still a big threat and tremors still continue, I'm honestly anxious and nervous when I think about my family and friends whom I left in Yokohama and my husband's family who live in Aomori, northern part of the mainland Japan, but I can only hope that there will be no more damage. With all the disasters and confused information, I don't know what to say at this stage, but I'm just praying that our country restores peace as soon as possible.

Plum Blossoms

Last weekend the weather got much warmer, so we took the opportunity to go to a park to see early plum blossoms. Somehow plum blossoms are not as popular as cherry blossoms. I'm not sure why, it might be because it's still a bit too cold to walk around just for flowers. But I adore them as much as cherry blossoms, mainly because they bloom in the earliest of spring, when I am anxiously waiting for the warmer weather. As I walked through the trees, I smelled a sweet scent of the flowers in the air. It was subtle, but enough to give me a feeling that spring has finally come.

I wore a dress that I recently found on the sales rack. I'm not usually fond of small floral prints as they often look vague to me, but lately I've been finding myself drawn to them, especially when they're paired with some bright matching color to complement the vagueness. The trench coat is a purchase from last year. It's slightly iridescent and I think adds a nice touch to the otherwise simple khaki trench, although I don't think you can see that from these pictures.
