Pleasantville Martial Arts School Teaches Vision and Goal Setting

As leaders, you know that vision is an extremely important part of successful goal-setting. Without vision, the goal simply becomes something you say you’re going to do– not something that has a highly developed sensory component that keeps you motivated, driven, clear and focused.

Joel Barker once said; “Vision without action is a dream. Action without vision is simply passing the time. Action with Vision is making a positive difference.” We must take charge of our futures by creating a powerful vision of what
we want and then taking action on it.

This week, let’s talk about our goals and vision for 2011.

This week, we’re talking about what our goals look like in our vision. Think of your most pressing goal for 2011. What does it look like in your mind? How does that vision translate into action? How does your vision affect you? The point here is to be as specific as you can– not just about what your mind sees but how that clarity and that goal affect how you conduct yourself and see yourself. Speaker, Rosabeth Moss Kanter. said it well when she said, “A vision is not just a picture of what could be; it is an appeal to our better selves, a call to become something more.”

How can we inspire others as well as ourselves to choose goals and develop vision that help to develop our character and how we can make the world better– rather than simply helping oneself?

This week, your Powerful Thought Assignment is to rate your VISION on a scale from 1-10, 1 being very unclear and 10 being very clear. How can you develop a vision that helps you get motivated and focused?

(Pleasantville, NY) – Kapatid Martial Arts sponsored a Thanksgiving Food Drive in partnership with the Salvation Army in White Plains, NY. Over 500 lbs of canned goods and boxed goods were donated for the Thanksgiving Food Drive. Guro Patrick Consing was proud to announce that this is the 9th year of participation of Kapatid Martial Arts in helping those who are less fortunate.

The Salvation Army feeds hundreds of families for Thanksgiving. If it were not for the participation and commitment of schools like Kapatid Martial Arts, without the Thanksgiving Food Drive, families in need would be at risk of missing out on the holiday festivities with a proper meal.

Our martial students from Pleasantville, Briarcliff, Armonk, Chappaqua, Thornwood, Hawthorne, and Valhalla participated in Kapatid Martial Arts’ Thanksgiving Food Drive.

Today, November 11, 2010, we planned to take the Delta team out for a leadership team trip to (drumroll please..) Medieval Times! Yay! A King, a princess, some knights jousting, a jester and the occasional wench to serve us awesome food while watching the festivities of the olden times is something everyone should experience

Since the place is located in New Jersey we had to meet up at the Kapatid Martial Arts School which is located in Pleasantville New York, at around 8:30am because it would take us around an hour and a half to take a school bus there to make the 11am show. Everyone loves to take class trips right? Btw, it is Veterans Day today as well, so we expected there to be quite a few other schools showing up for class trips but we found out that we were the only martial arts school that was in attendance!

We actually arrived around 30 minutes earlier than schedule and they didn’t allow us to go inside as the doors open at 10am. We were stuck waiting outside the Medieval Times building and it was a pretty frigid day. Luckily we made the most of it by taking a cool picture out front!
Finally, on the dot they let us in and immediately we jumped inside. There is alot of things to see and plenty of stuff to buy The kids were definitely excited to be there and some of them bought some wooden swords to play with. If you’ve never been to Medieval Times, one thing you’ll notice is the fact that every staff member wears clothing that represented that era and speak in Old English, addressing us as “My Lord” for the guys and “My Lady” to the gals. I took it upon myself to show who is boss by having Guro Nick and Kapatid Program Director Rita sit beside me..

One thing you will notice is we are all wearing paper crowns. When you get in the place, your party is assigned a color for the knight that will represent us in the show. Our group got the black and white knight so our job was to shout and scream for him during the event. Getting our group to scream during the event didn’t seem to be a problem as they were totally into it. In this picture, we’re all starving so we were eagerly anticipating the serving of the food! We had barbecued chicken, baked potato and corn on the cob. They also have a vegetarian plate in case you were wondering.

The show itself was awesome! There was a falcon that flew right above our heads in the beginning which was very impressive. There was a story that took place throughout. Eventually we learned that the green knight was the “bad guy” so we were all cheering to make sure he didn’t beat our knight up at least
The skills needed to re-enact fighting during those times surely required plenty of practice. The knights were going full out as demonstrated by the sparks when the weapons made contact with eachother. In between the battles and demonstrations of skill such as the joust, there was a “dancing” horse that trotted around the ring like a superstar! A beautiful and talented horse to say the least. For sure we all enjoyed the show. It gave us a chance to spend quality time together and bond outside of the school to celebrate the achievements of the Delta Team. You guys rock and I appreciate knowing you all!

Check out all our happy faces

“Great leaders DO follow; their dreams, their hearts, and their sense of purpose.” — Dr. Robyn Silverman – Kapatid Martial Arts’ Child Development Expert

September 2010 is Leadership Month as part of Kapatid Martial Arts’ POWerful Words Character Development program! Students will be studying, developing and experiencing powerful life lessons focusing on developing their leadership skills in fun and exciting ways. In addition to all of the physical skills that they’ll be working on this month, students will be discussing and practicing the following concepts that will help them to realize and appreciate the value and benefit of becoming a leader. Students will be focusing on the following topics both in and out of class:

What is a leader, what does a leader do, and why do we need them?

Leadership Skills: Group goals and taking initiative

Leadership Skills: Listening and communicating effectively

Leadership Skills: Weighing pros and cons and taking responsibility

“We all want our children to be leaders instead of mindless followers. We want them to know what they want and go after it– and inspire others to do the same.” says Dr. Robyn Silverman, Kapatid Martial Arts’ child & adolescent expert, and creator of the POWerful Words Character Development program used at the facility. “As a Powerful Words academy, we also want to make sure that everyone– from children to teens to adults– understand that being a leader is not about being closed mined and stubborn but rather about being goal-oriented, respectful, compassionate and open minded.”

Patrick Consing, Executive Director of Kapatid Martial Arts says, “Leadership is one of the primary tenets that we are proud to help our students develop here at our school. We’re really excited about being able to focus an entire month on Leadership…especially since it’s back to school time. We aim to empower our students with the skills necessary for them to take their roles as leaders at school, at other activities, and of course, here at our academy.

Kapatid Martial Arts’ strong curriculum and the POWerful Words Character Development system provide our students with the opportunities to become UNSTOPPABLE in life. These lessons will remain with our students for life and we’re honored to help them achieve the success that they deserve” says Consing.

“People think that the difference between a good life and a bad one is money, luck or fame. But the real difference can be found in one word: attitude..” — Dr. Robyn Silverman – Kapatid Martial Arts’ Child Development Expert

July 2010 is Attitude Month as part of Kapatid Martial Arts’ POWerful Words Character Development program! Students will be studying, developing and experiencing powerful life lessons focusing on how to develop a positive attitude in a fun and successful way that works for everybody. In addition to all of the physical skills that they’ll be developing this month, students will be discussing and practicing the following concepts that will help them to realize and appreciate the value and benefit of being the kind of person who’s positive attitude helps him to become a leader to those around him. Students will be focusing on the following topics both in and out of class:

What is attitude? Positive attitude vs Negative attitude

Thoughts and Feelings: How do thoughts and feelings affect attitude?

Actions: How do people with positive or negative attitudes behave?

Choosing our attitude: Becoming more positive and how changing affects ourselves and others.

“Our attitude colors every part of our life and even when we try to cover it up, it always tends to find a way to seep out.” says Dr. Robyn Silverman, Kapatid Martial Arts’ child & adolescent expert, and creator of the POWerful Words Character Development program used at the facility. “It’s vital that we talk to our children about it because unlike so many of our characteristics, attitudes are in our control to maintain or change each and every day.”

Patrick Consing, Executive Director of Kapatid Martial Arts Academy says, “At our academy, attitude is everything. People are always commenting about the positive energy they feel when they enter our school or meet one of our students…and this all stems from their attitude! This is a skill that each of our students can hone, regardless of their athletic abilities, so it’s truly a life skill that will benefit them for their entire life.”

Kapatid Martial Arts’ strong curriculum and the POWerful Words Character Development system provide our students with the opportunities to become UNSTOPPABLE in life. These lessons will remain with our students for life and we’re honored to help them achieve the success that they deserve” says Consing.
