is ready! It's been loooong months of work so being able to actually touch it and browse through its pages feels like a dream come true.

Colour Confident Stitching will help you create beautiful colour palettes for your projects. It does not matter how many times you feel you have failed in the past when choosing colours. The good news is that colour is a skill that can be learned. We all have the potential to shine just by learning the process and putting it into practice. Although the focus here is embroidery, the theory and process of creating colour palettes has many potential applications beyond stitching.

Get started with this book that brings together tips on how to discover and dissect a world of colour and harmony into palettes, grids and stitches to build your own interpretation. Through a simple and yet thorough understanding of color theory, I share concepts, tools and explanations to recognise, understand and combine colours that can be applied to any kind of creative project. Colour Confident Stitching walks you through wonderful visual narratives that were conceived especially for this book. With my camera I take you on a trip around the streets, into the home and those small surprises that provide vivid examples of the core premise: anyone can train to capture and build their own colour palettes.

Colour Confident Stitching : How to Create Beautiful Colour Palettes
by Karen Barbé

Paperback, 128 pages
The Pimpernel Press
London, United Kingdom
Language: English

The publication date is March 2nd, 2017 but you can pre-order it now from these online shops:
Amazon
Book Depository

Colour Confident Stitching is my first book and I have dedicated it to my niece Violeta because I love her so much and because I wanted to honour all the moments we've spent together colouring with pencils and recognising colours in things, flowers and animals. I'm not sure if she understands this now but this is my way of handing down to her my passion for colour and embroidery.

Colour Confident | Palette Nº3

The days leading up to Christmas must be the time of the year I love the most: sunny and long days, warm evenings spent in a terrace drinking something, twinkling garlands everywhere. So I thought this palette should bring a bit of each thing: palette Nº3 tells about a relaxed celebration amongst the glitter of metallic threads, the freshness of a summer cocktail and the warmth of an evening shared with family and friends.

Have you already seen the tutorial of these cardboard stars?

###

COLOUR CONFIDENT Palette Nº3

DMC E898 – Dark Oak (metallic)
DMC 433 – Brown Medium
DMC 3776 – Mahogany Light
DMC E3821 – Light Gold (metallic)
DMC 964 – Sea Green Light
DMC 958 – Sea Green Dark
DMC E3849 – Aquamarine Blue (metallic)

How-to | Christmas stars

I thought of making these quick and easy stars to add a hint of light to any Christmas gift, card, ornament, wreath... anywhere really! As usual, I'm working with my favourite material (cereal box cardboard) but you can choose any other cardboard you like.

HOW-TO:
• Make copies of the stars template. Download the file here.
• Cut a rough circle around each star in the printed paper. Cut the circles slightly larger than the star shape.
• Arrange and attach the circles on the cardboard using a small piece of double sided tape in the centre of the shape. Do this on the wrong side of your cardboard in order to avoid any damage on the cardboard once we remove the template (note that, as I used the brown side of the cereal box, I attached the circles on the right side).
• Using scissors and/or an utility knife, cut the star following the lines of the template. The piece of double sided tape will keep the template in place while you cut out the shape. Once you've cut all sides, carefully remove the paper template.
• Leaving a 8 cm/3" tail on the back, start winding a length of knitting cotton yarn (I like this one because it builds a nice structure on the star but you can try any kind of yarn or thread) around the inner angles of the star. You can see the how to wind the yarn in this video. Once you've joined all the pairs of angles, tie a knot with both tails of yarn on the back side. Weave in the tails through the back using a large blunt needle; cut ends.
• You are ready now!

###

• ¡Y estamos listos!

Colour Confident | Palette Nº2

The palette Nº2 is the colour story of a serene spring afternoon making tea.

Last year I did the embroidered piece shown below (showing the wrong side) while I was at the Royal School of Needlework. I took this same main image as a reference and embroidered it on canvas employing different stitches. One of the requirements for that piece is that it rendered the image in a very realist fashion, presenting faithfully the shapes and their colours, highlights and shadows (something that, I confess, I don't particularly enjoy from an aesthetic point of view). And well, to that end you had to use lots of colours and materials; in fact, the finished piece included cotton floss, wool yarn and metallic threads. However, the palette Nº2—by means of these eight shades (two blues, one yellow, two pinks and three beige/brown)—is focused more on expressing the fresh glow of that spring afternoon rather than portraying realistically the scene. The emphasis is placed on the pink tones but you can always adapt the palette to your own taste by using the blue or beige/brown shades as the main colour.

###

COLOUR CONFIDENT Palette Nº2

DMC 796 – Royal Blue Dark
DMC 797 – Royal Blue
DMC 973 – Canary Bright
DMC 3733 – Dusty Rose
DMC 963 – Dusty Rose Ultra very Light
DMC 842 – Beige Brown Very Light
DMC 840 – Beige Brown Medium
DMC 838 – Beige Brown Very Dark

Colour Confident | Palette Nº1

Today I'm kicking off a new series of posts on my blog: each week I will be sharing a beautiful colour palette for embroidering. The palettes will feature a colour selection built from the DMC embroidery floss colour chart so you will know straight away which shades to use in your project.

This first palette draws its inspiration from the bold colours of bougainvillea bracts (the coloured leaves that surround the small flower of this plant) which range from electric fuchsia to a light warm beige when dry. What I like about this shift of colour is that it teaches us to see in a different way the colour stories that happen around us: as well as bracts change their colour conspicuously there are thousands of other elements that are capable of opening up their colour range in a more subtle manner through the highlights and shadows that dwell in their surface. Next time you have in your hand a piece of fabric, a petal, a fruit (or anything really!), take a closer look and discover the quantity of colours that can be found in a portion that, seen from a distance, can appear just as a solid color.

###

COLOUR CONFIDENT Palette Nº1

DMC 543 – Beige Brown Ultra Very Light
DMC 3864 – Mocha Beige Light
DMC 3608 – Plum Very Light
DMC 3607 – Plum Light
DMC 718 – Plum
DMC 312 – Baby Blue Very Dark
DMC 803 – Baby Blue Ultra Very Dark

How-to | Embroidered wooden bowls

I couldn't resist these wooden bowls. And of course I couldn't resist making some stitches on them! These are disposable mini bowls for dessert but you could well use them as small coasters or as a cute container (I use one for leaving threads ends when I embroider).

I used a Dremel rotary tool with a 3/64" drill bit for perforating holes all over the bowl surface. Previously I traced the points with a mechanical pencil. You can always adapt the total number of points, shape or size according to the surface you will work on.

The stitch is super easy, fun and really quick to do (I promise!):

· Cut a thread of 40 cm/15.75" (I've used two strands of wool here). This length yielded one stitched “fan”. I used a new thread for each fan so there were no long thread jumps on the inside.
· Thread a blunt needle and make a knot at the end of the thread. Go down in 2, leaving the knot on the outside or right side of the bowl (this will create a short tail that will lay underneath the following stitches).
· Come up in 1 and go down in point a.
· Come up in 2 (try not to go through the knot), go down in point a.
· Come up in 3, go down in point a.
· Repeat until you've covered all seven stitches.
· To cast off, weave in the thread between the stitches on the inside of the bowl (wrong side). Cut. Carefully cut off the knot at point 2.
· Done!

Check this short video to get a sneak peek of how I stitched the bowls. Click here.

###

Fuchsine – Embroidered potholder

This is a potholder that started out from a word I read somewhere (fuchsine) that reminded me of a woolen fabric of a unique magenta colour I had in my stash and that sparked the use of a rich, creamy and chocolaty palette that I found among threads of wool and cotton, copper and gold metallic threads and a variegated brown pearl cotton of uncertain quality. Here, plastic fusible beads and chalk on blackboard.

Also featured is my new second-hand sewing machine. It's a Necchi Supernova that I'm still exploring and adjusting to its non-stop sewing system (unless I'm misunderstanding something here) which is operated by a lever instead of the pedal. The pedal, which by the way boasts of a striking wooden button, seems to only increase/decrease the speed of sewing. Of course there's no manual... If you happen to own one, I'd love if you could share with me any usage tip!

UPDATE: I just found the manual in pdf format! Thanks to Gabriela, Maria and Raúl who kindly sent emails with tips.

###

Embroidery samplers from the Chicago History Museum

My recent visit to the Chicago History Museum it's probably one of the highlights of my last trip to the Windy City. There, I was able to spend some good time with embroidery samplers that are part of their comprehensive collection of textiles of all sorts. I had the privilege to look up close and touch the highly detailed needlework. I was particularly interested on how these early pieces are a living testimony about technique, colour usage and design process. I'm really lucky to have had amazing hosts during my visit. I'm really grateful of Britta and Petra who were very kind to open the archives and collection for my research.

All these samples are exemplary of masterful execution. The most used stitch is cross-stitch. It's possible to be found on alphabets, flowers and animals on linen fabrics. When compared to contemporary versions of similar subjects I think the most outstanding difference it's the size of stitches: each diagonal expands over two threads of the linen. This little detail makes each cross a remarkable exercise of attention and patience.

The colour of these samples was also a feature that I got caught up with. They all show a fairly muted palette and also many stains on the fabric. The exposure to light and the passing of time have caused a substantial fading of threads. Fortunately it's possible to discover their original color by reviewing the back side of the samples. It was also fascinating to discover small embroidered areas that reveal a creative twist from the embroiderer: when a specific colour was gone they would finish the section with a similar or completely different tone.

I'm still inspecting all the photos I took, and it's exciting to find a new detail that went unnoticed during my visit. During the next weeks I'll be sharing some of these findings on my blog. Stay tuned!

###

How a nice email can make your day

More embroideries from the series stitched on hard surfaces.

And extra surprises when I find unexpected gifts from lovely people who take the time to express with words how they feel about my work. Here's what this person wrote to me:

“I got early today at the office and I started browsing my favorite blogs as usual. Maybe without knowing I wanted to load myself with beautiful images and inspiration. Right when I saw your work I realized that by matter of chance a week ago I had watched a chapter of Manufactura and I had already seen some of your work there. Thanks for the gist of calm. For the colors. For the ongoing story about the everyday things. The photographs were a moment of peace. I don't know if this message on this bottle will get to you, but I'm sending it anyway... maybe it will hit your shore. Thanks again, I loved to get my day started this way”.

Thanks to you!

###

Gracias a ti.

Hello Autumn

I'm writing these words from Chicago. Autumn is coming, light is changing, colours are turning warmer. I've walked around Logan Square and I'm delighted to see houses that hang nice signs and ornaments on their entrance doors to welcome the new season. Someone told me “sorry about the weather” one rainy evening.

I'm enjoying the days here. Just the quietness I needed to catch up on my embroideries.

###

When I'm in my studio I feel at home

The best image I can think of my life when looking back to this year is a roller-coaster: rapid moves followed by moments of calmness and then full throttle again. I have the feeling that 2015 never really ended because early this year I had to finish my book on embroidery which I had started working on the previous semester (intense months producing all of the book material, deadlines, corrections, re-doing things I already thought done, etc.) Then I hopped into a super busy business trip to Japan and China for a whole month! And as if these trips were not already time and energy consuming, add the implications of renovating and moving into my new studio in one of the most packed areas in Santiago. In the middle of all this, I made two long trips to the US where I’ve been setting up a new studio while managing to keep my teaching practice both at the school and my own workshops throughout the year.

All this excitement has brought "collateral damage", of course. It’s been hard to align everything as neatly as I would have wanted. The most difficult thing has been finding quality time to focus on my creative process. I’ve missed deadlines for submissions and faced challenges around commissions that in other scenarios would have been easy to cope with. In fact, part of the images I’m sharing here were supposed to be published on a well-known design blog showing my studio BUT I missed the opportunity as I came up with the images way too late (I mean MONTHS too late).

I can’t determine whether I'm a time-management disaster but when I look at this year under a positive light I realise it's been actually an amazing time. I'm so happy to be harvesting the fruits that my own work and life have produced. The quietness and luminous ambience I get on my studio can sometimes turn into a stormy setting but I know they will always come back.

Get a glimpse of my studio in this short video that Cordillera did with me!

Chenille cross-stitch

I love this cross-stitch motif and how it renders so differently depending on the technique I employ. It started long ago on grid paper, then I tried it with XL cross-stitch on cereal cardboard, more recently with fusible beads and now I'm exploring a chenille effect (aided with my Dremel tools). While the design loses some of its details and almost looks like a different one in chenille, I like a lot how the shape subtlety emerges within the velvet texture.

The chenille effect is something that actually occurred from a mistake: cutting some stitches that didn't turn out as expected revealed this soft surface on the perforated cardboard. So I dared and cut off all of the stitches. Lucky mistake!

###

How to embroider using a Dremel

Some weeks ago I was invited to join Dremel Chile as a partner to the brand (a sort of ambassador) and it's been a fascinating experience for my textile practice. For many years I've tried different ways of punching or perforating cardboard for achieving an embroiderable surface but I never dared for harder materials because I was doing the task only by hand. As a brand partner I will be able to try different tools and explore the possibilities they can offer to my embroidery work.

The first tool I've tried is the Dremel 3000 + flex shaft using different drill bits on this hard cardboard. Result: 7400 holes in all. Then I stitched some of the holes with wool yarn and cotton perlé thread.

But what is going to be really exciting is participating as a judge to the Dremelizate competition which is looking for the Chilean Dremel Master. If you have a Dremel and want to join the competition, make a video of yourself using the tool and showing your skills with it. Find all the details on the Dremel Chile Facebook fanpage. Closes August 30th, 2016.

See you there!

###

New! Now seven years later it makes me so happy to see this design evolve into new products: a collection of bath towels that have the charm of old placid days.

If you live in the American Midwest you can find these towels now at Meijer supermarkets (and why not head afterwards to Lake Michigan and enjoy a nice summer day?)

###

<link href="http://blog.karenbarbe.com/2016/08/new-bath-towels.html" rel="alternate" title="New! And I was, oh no, thanks to you for letting me visit and see how and where you work. Because it's the most generous gesture when an artist lets you into her private world of creation and be able to see the real backstage of her artwork. Johana is a Colombian artist based in Chicago currently exploring the expressive possibilities of machine embroidery to tell the stories of herself and family.

###

Hello from Chicago!

Hello from Chicago! A wonderful city to be inspired by its history, colour, music and food. I arrived a week ago to enjoy the warm and humid summer. I've already seen some textiles, had tasty coffee and beer and rejoiced in a night of jazz. I'm staying here for a few more weeks and I hope to gather lots of exciting images.

###

Inspired by cross-stitch motifs

I love cross-stitch patterns. I'm always thinking in small squares so everything I get to stitch is one way or another related to them. Perhaps it's because as a girl I learned to embroider with these painted cross-stitch or petit point kits, or because it seems to me these motifs dwell in a square grid that gives them a sense of textile structure that I like so much.

So it was unavoidable for cross-stitch motifs not to be the inspiration behind my new collection of embroidered patches. The Tea Party set was born after embroidering these perforated cardboard shapes. The flower patch looks after one of my favourite embroidered potholder designs. And the dog and the duck have been around me for quite a while (six years now!!!)

Find the patches collection here.

###

Perhaps you've read that all happy families are alike but each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way (that's the opening line of Anna Karenina). I've found that, when it comes to my embroidery workshops, the opposite it's true: all groups are happy and unique in their own way but they all suffer and get frustrated in the same manner.

Knots, split threads, uncertain colour palettes, agonizing needle threading, lack of time for embroidering—that's just a few of the challenges faced by beginner embroiderers. The good news is that all those things can be overcome by practice (except for lack of time, sadly!) The more you embroider, the more you learn how to deal with these common problems.

Each group always surprise me with their positive vibes but most of all with their extraordinary talent to render every stitch that we learn. I'm really proud to share with you some of that embroidery genius (images shown from top to bottom): the beautiful and flawless sampler stitched by Natalia Ninomiya; sampler inspired by Chilean ethnic ceramic motifs by archeologist Silvia Alfaro; the most exquisite embroidery notes made by design student Javiera Parr.

Want to join and learn how to embroider? The next workshops start in August!
Check dates and hours here

###

Tea Party – Embroidered Sticker Patches

I'm very happy to introduce my first collection of embroidered patches which I developed in April during my trip to Japan and China. It certainly depends on your personal preferences but it also has to do with the type of stitch and fabric you are using. I love the look of wooden hoops but too often I find it difficult to achieve good tautness (compared to spring tension plastic) especially if you are embroidering on fine fabric.

Binding wood embroidery hoops with bias tape is a great way of getting that drum-tight fabric you need when embroidering certain stitches (like satin or laid stitches) or using thin fabrics. You can bind one ring or both for added fabric grip and even use a similar colour to avoid any friction staining. Make some small stitches at the beginning and end of the tape to keep it in place.

###

Kogin embroidery

This is part of the exquisite work of Osaka-based embroiderers Reiko Daigo and Midori Hirayama. They've been embroidering and teaching Kogin for over 18 years but this was the first time they taught to a non-Japanese speaker—me! We were all very excited and nervous to be able to make the most of this experience despite the language difference. Reiko opened her house to receive me and my friend Hiromi and for several days we could learn and practise this traditional stitch from Japan. Arigato gozaimasu!

###

Natural dyes – Kyoto

Last week my friend Hiromi and I made a short trip to visit a traditional onsen spa located in rural Kyoto. The bath, the view of the place and the chance to learn about natural dying made up for the long bus trip into the mountain which was a bit of a nightmare to me (I get sick easily with motion).

We dyed cotton and silk samples using indigo leaves (blue), plant roots (red), tree bark (brown) and leaves (yellow) from the area. Did you know that natural dyes had an important role in clothes? Garments dyed with indigo protected farmers from insects while a red piece of cloth worn by ninja was dyed with plant roots as it had healing properties in case of being wounded.

###
