Inspired by a slough in Santa Barbara, at sunset, as seen in spring. There was a lot of moisture in the air, creating a warm sunset glow.
If you’re in town this Saturday, come see me at the Montrose Artwalk, where I will be showing my work in front of the Chase Bank, near the corner of Honolulu and Ocean View in Montrose. On Sunday you’ll find me at the Pasadena Society of Artists Art Fair, at the Pasadena Museum of History, corner of Orange Grove and Walnut in Pasadena. I’ll be in booth 13, east side of the Fenyes mansion.

I’ve been traveling a lot lately, which is one of the reasons I haven’t updated the blog as frequently as usual. But the work is adding up, and more will be posted soon. (When I’m not traveling, I’ve been hard at work on numerous commissions, which also takes the time away from blogging.) At any rate, I’m back and thrilled that spring is truly here.

This painting features a sunset around the area of Palm Springs, with Mt. San Jacinto in the background. But it really could be anywhere in the southwest. When there is plentiful moisture in the air, the sunsets are brilliant.

This is a painting of South Lake, west of Bishop, up Bishop Creek, in the Eastern Sierra Range.
Apparently fall is the best time for fishing at South Lake. We saw a lot of fisherman around the lake when we were there.

This is a painting I’ve been meaning to paint for a long time – the beautiful colors of sunset drenching a warm California landscape. The vines had just been harvested and a mid autumn chill was in the air. How I love the central coast – it’s such an inspiring place to paint.

I painted this in February, just a few weeks ago, so the grasses are winter-white. The day I was there the Sedona Marathon was going on, and I believe this was part of the route. I painted late in the day after all the marathoners were finished. There is a trailhead in the meadow in front of me, which goes to Bear Mountain. I’d like to try that hike some time. I’ll bet it’s beautiful.

Below, painting by the roadside, while the sun played peek a boo all afternoon. It looks like I was standing in the middle of the road, but I was actually safely off to one side.

“Poppy Time”

Our winter rains remind me that it won’t be long before the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve will be in full bloom, as it is in this 11 x 14 painting. The difficult thing about painting in the poppy area is the strong winds, which I experienced a few years ago painting out at the Tejon Ranch (the south side of the ranch property, facing Antelope Valley.) This year, if I go out there to paint again, I’ll have my new Soltek easel, which has a much wider stance than my favorite EasyL. At the Tejon I had to hold onto my EasyL with one hand to keep it from going over, but the painter next to me had a Soltek and it was rock solid. The disadvantage of the Soltek, however, is that the palette is much farther away from the painting. So, there are tradeoffs, as with most things.

Quiet Day on Carmel Bay

It was a quiet day when we were on the Monterey Peninsula. There was a slight mist in the air which softened some of the colors. The waters of Carmel Bay truly reflected the word “Pacific” – peaceful. This view of Carmel Bay looks slightly to the south and Point Lobos, where I have painted before.

The great thing about painting at Grand Canyon is that there’s a scene practically everywhere you look. The sculptural forms of the plateaus and cliffs constantly change color as the sun moves – which adds to its beauty and provides entertainment and frustration for the artist. Our first days at the canyon we looked for locations to paint, then returned on the third day to some favorite spots. My location for this painting was somewhere between Hopi Point and Powell Point on the south rim, rim trail.

The photo below shows a good example of the difference in color temperature between seeing a painting outdoors and indoors. The photo above was taken under indoor light (as it will be seen in a home or office.) Below, the painting as it appeared under natural (blue) daylight in shadow. As a rule I try to always photograph a painting as it will appear under normal home or office conditions.
