Eight Years

Jason, it's been eight years.

Look at us! Hah we haven't changed a bit =)

Seriously though, eight years.

It doesn't feel like it's been that long.

But then again, we lived at our first place for 1 year, then our second place for 2 years, and our third place for 4 years, and we've already been in our house for a year...!

It technically adds up.

But it still doesn't feel that long ago.

I had always hoped that I would marry someone who would make me happy every day.

I hoped that when we had been married for eight years we'd still be crazy about each other and immensely happy.

Jason, you gave me everything I could have ever hope for in a marriage, and in an eternal companion.

Sometimes it's difficult to fall asleep because my reality is so much better than my dreams.

(Back ground info: So recently I fear my childhood milk intolerance has returned. I've been complaining to Jason how I can't have cheese, or yogurt, or ice cream or milkshakes. I was especially saddened about ice cream. I love ice cream.)

Well, the other day we wanted a loaf of french bread to go with dinner (last minute) and so we jumped in the car and went to the store. I stayed in the car while Jason ran in to grab the bread. I had told Jason "Just the bread! It's right by the checkouts. JUST grab the bread." He had kept saying how there were other things on the grocery list that we might as well grab too, but in my mind, then it would take even longer, and I just wanted this to be a quick-yummy-french-bread-grabbing trip. Anything else was unacceptable.

SO trusting that he understood me, but seeing the glint in his eye at the same time I sent him into the store while I waited in the car (I was in my lounging clothes, makeup-less, hair a mess, and didn't wanna be seen in public, heehee). Well, after a couple minutes went by, I KNEW he had ignored me and was grabbing the other things too. He should have been back by then, and he wasn't. He finally came back and as he threw the bag of "bread" into the back seat I heard a THUNK and knew it was more than bread.

With a smile on his face, he kept teasing that it was just a really heavy loaf.
Me: "Yeah, sure Jason."
Him: "No really. There weren't any fluffy ones left. Just thick heavy ones."
Me:*eyeroll* "Ugh why couldn't you have just grabbed the bread?! I'm going to the grocery store tomorrow anyways. I can grab all the other things then."

I was annoyed. And it was silly of me. He just kept on grinning.

Well, we get home, and I discover the one other thing he had grabbed:
Sherbet.
I felt terrible. I apologized for being so upset at him.
I knew exactly what he had been thinking:

Karen loves ice cream. Karen can't have ice cream. It makes her sad. I want to make her happy. I'm going to surprise her with Sherbet. She likes Sherbet and Sherbet has no milk (or so he thought). She'll be so happy and love the surprise.

I hugged him and smiled and thanked him, as I also explained that sherbet does have milk in it. It's sorbet that doesn't.

He was shocked and sad as he even looked at the ingredients to verify the sad news.

Later, as we sat on the couch and watched a movie, he enjoyed his bowl of sherbet while I snuggled up close, reminded of how much he loves me.

Ten years ago...
I started this blog, with THIS post about Laffy Taffy. Yes that was 10 years ago. Hah I didn't even KNOW Jason back then! I think he was off in Texas or something. Crazy!
But I am glad my lovely friend Katie coaxed me into starting this blog. Sometimes I don't write for a while, sometimes I am consistent, but it has been fun to look back and see some funny things over the years. Here's to the last Ten Years of bumps and bruises, adventures, taste tests, ridiculous happenings, random occurrences, exploding food, spittle, spiders, family, first-time experiences, stop-motion films, fishin', shootin', bakin'.... and so much more!

Married for SEVEN years!!

I cannot believe it has been seven years.

No seriously. I can't.

I refuse to.

First of all, there's no way we're that old!

Second, I still feel like honeymooners...

I still get butterflies whenever he smiles at me.

My whole soul lights up.

I still cannot get enough of him.

I would always rather be with him and doing nothing, then be without him and doing something.

He is my whole world.

Life is always wonderful as long as he is by my side.

KUBB

A House = A Garden!

We bought a house! Crazy. We've been casually looking for a few years, but when we saw this one, we happened to jump on it. There were a few things that needed fixing, but overall it was good. We were most excited to have a garden.

It started out as a garden forest of weeds. And I mean a thick forest. I could not see how we could tackle these monstrous weeds and plant our garden in just in a few short days... it was already May and we needed to plant now. But a wonderful new neighbor came over with a couple shovels and went all in, helping me see that it was possible. That first day, we got 2/3 of it done! I was seriously amazed. And we were so happy to see that it was good soil underneath that forest of weeds (no wonder they loved that area so much). In another day, Jason and I finished the last third. and I begun to see that perhaps this garden of weeds did have potential. Who cares if we have boxes stack everywhere inside and nothing is put away... We're going to have a garden! We were able to plant pretty soon, and after a week we started to see our garden come to life! Every new sprout was exciting.

I'm out there every morning fighting off the weeds as they are constantly trying to come back. I have hope that I'll come off conqueror in the end.

There was one small spot in the yard that was all lush beautiful grass.

Wedding Cake

I did another wedding cake this week.

Not gonna lie.

I was very proud of how smooth I got the crumb coat (1st layer of frosting).

On a side note, we compared regular store bought eggs, to local farm fresh eggs.... aaaaand.... we couldn't tell the difference, haha. Then again, we're not the crazy type that like their yolks all eewy gooey runny. Maybe if you're that kind of a crazy person, you can taste a difference, or perhaps we just don't have refined taste buds =)

The main difference we noticed was visually, the yolk was a richer color and larger.

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year!!

We've had a wonderful holiday season!

We made gingerbread houses, and as you can see we have very different ideas of what our ideal home will look like.

I'm not typically an eggnog person, but this year, I discovered an eggnog that I actually liked!

I enjoyed making some new Christmas decorations =)

We picked out the perfect Christmas tree this year (though it did have a couple flaws -you can read about that here).

It hadn't been snowing all December.

Then, when we woke up Christmas morning, we looked out the window, and saw a blanket of white. It snowed, and it continued snowing all Christmas day.

It was a real Christmas Miracle =)

And we had a fun Christmas morning with my sister =)

And we enjoyed the new snow and went sledding with Jason's sister. I have the lovely bruises to proved that we had a lot of fun.

And I had a wonderful birthday =)

Dear Christmas Tree

Dear Christmas Tree,

I really liked you. Even after that whole wasp incident (remind me again why you decided to bring a wasp with you into our home?) You were the perfect Christmas Tree. You were beautiful, full (no one even noticed your bald spot, I promise), strong, and smelled amazing. I was so happy you were still full of life on Christmas day. You were my favorite tree yet. And I even would have let you stay another week. However, last night my husband was out of town. You know how I dislike being alone at night... And so you decided to fling an ornament from your branches in the middle of the night, creating just enough of a noise to scare the crap outta me. Not cool. You have signed your own eviction notice, and shall now be turned into mulch.

Baby Katelyn Needs Your Prayers

My brother and his wife has a little baby girl back in June, born 3lb 5oz, and was immediately taken to Primary Children's. The beginning of Katelyn's little life has been rough, filled with complications.

Yesterday, little Katelyn underwent open heart surgery.

Your prayers are needed for this little girl and her family.

Here's the latest update from my brother:

Update on Katelyn Johnston--Surgery Tuesday, November 11

On Tuesday, November 11, our daughter Katelyn underwent open heart surgery in what is the first stage of a permanent repair for her congenital heart defect. This is a major procedure to re-route her main arteries through the lungs (to oxygenate her blood) then back to her heart. They will be making her heart a functioning 3 chamber heart.

"Katelyn's condition is called "Tricuspid Atresia with a VSD (Ventricular Septal Defect) and an ASD (Aortal Septal Defect). Her oxygen saturation levels keep dropping, heart rate races to around 200 bpm, and she vomits. She hasn't been able to handle her feedings for a couple of weeks now. We have tried different medications to treat the reflux but she didn't improve. On Thursday, we brought her in to Primary Children's for observation. Friday she underwent a cath lab procedure to map and measure the internal pressures of the heart. On Saturday she had a severe episode where her oxygen levels dropped to the low teens (75-85% is normal for her). It took her almost an hour to recover to normal levels. It was then determined that her next surgical procedure, "the glen", would be done sooner than later."

We appreciate all the prayers that have been sent her way and would love it if you could please continue to do so. We will keep you posted as to her condition.

As Katelyn was being taken into surgery, she had a death-grip on her daddy's finger, and would not let go. Such a sweet picture.

Fall Fun, and a Flaming Dragon

I love the weather in the Fall.

I love the Fall colors!

I love jackets, boots, and scarves!

I love carving pumpkins (though I hate scooping out the guts). This year my parents were in town, and so we invited them to carve pumpkins with us, and we had a lot of fun.

Jason, of course, went above and beyond the call of Pumpkin Carving duty, and made a fire breathing dragon.

Sorry about the shaky camera work (that first flame burst was huge and loud and startled me, haha)

This year for Halloween, we kept things pretty simple. Jason was Al Borland from the old show "Home Improvement" (remember Tim "the tool man" Taylor?) and I made myself a wand, and became Hermione =)

Jason's Grandma

Jason's grandmother passed away a few weeks ago, on August 23, 2014. She is such a sweet lady. The first time I met her she had a huge smile on her face and wrapped me in her arms. She was so full of love and shared that love with everyone she met. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. Even after her husband Jack died a year ago, she was still full of life, love, and always had a smile on her face. We miss her, but we also know that she is with her husband now, and they are very happy to be together again =)

Victoria J. Webster (1922 - 2014)

Obituary

Victoria J. Webster was born in New York on June 24th, 1922 to Nicholas Maricevich and Kata Radovanovich Maricevich, both Yugoslavian immigrants. Vicki was the oldest of four sisters, including Katherine, Josephine and Lucy. In the mid-1930's, with the financial backing of other family members, the Maricevich's were able to move to Delano, California and purchase a small ranch. Vicki attended and later graduated from Delano High School in 1942. She then attended some college, majoring in bookkeeping and accounting, which allowed her to obtain various positions with several wineries throughout the Central Valley.

Several years later, while on a blind date with friends at a dance hall in Delano, she met her soon-to-be husband John (Jack) Webster. Jack had recently returned from serving in WWII. They would later marry on October 15, 1949 in Reno, Nevada. With their first child, Jo Ann, born in February of 1952 and a second child Elsie on the way, they purchased a large ranch property on the outskirts of Lindsay. Vicki became a homemaker, caring for their two children and also helped grandpa on the ranch. Her daily duties included everything from feeding Jo Ann and Elsie and changing diapers to spraying weeds and feeding turkeys. Additional property was purchased and they later built their customized dream home which they moved into in February of 1968. About this same time, Vicki was baptized as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Soon after, the family was sealed for all time and eternity in the Oakland Temple.

Through their hard work and love for their daughters, Jack and Vicki were able to support the girls financially as they later attended college in Utah. Shortly after graduating college, both Jo Ann and Elsie got married and started their own families. In December 1975, Vicki's first grandchild, Charley, was born to Jo Ann followed by Timothy. The third grandchild, Christina was born to Elsie, followed by Jason. Later, Brad was born to Jo Ann and Suzanne was born to Elsie.

Vicki and Jack continued living on the ranch, selling the fruit of their labor and became world renowned for their amazing oranges. In July 2013, Vicki lost her loving husband after 63 years. Despite Jacks passing, Vicki continued living her life happily and enjoyed visiting with family and friends. She was able to remain in her home for her final days and was surrounded by family members during her passing.

Vicki will always be remembered for her big, beautiful smile and her never ending kindness. She was the most incredible wife to Jack, with boundless love and support for both him and her daughters and grandchildren. We were all so truly blessed to have had her in our lives. You are truly missed Grandma!

In addition to her parents, Vicki is preceded in death by her husband Jack Webster and her sisters Josephine and Katherine. Vicki is survived by her sister, Lucy Whitford, her two daughters and her six grandchildren.

A special thanks to Dr. Ginsberg and his staff for all of the caring they have shown both Jack and Vicki through the years.

Services will be at 10 am, Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Lindsay. Viewing will be from 9 am until the service begins at the church. Burial will follow the service at Lindsay-Strathmore Cemetery.

Yard Games Galore

Jason loves yard games. Over the years, we've bought/made a few that we enjoy: Horseshoe, Croquet (what's left of it... our mallets keep breaking), Bocce Ball, and Hillbilly Golf (ladder golf, ladder ball... it has lots of names, some of which aren't very appropriate).

Jason also enjoys the game Cornhole and has been wanting to make one for a while now. With the help of our friend's woodshop, we finally got to make it.

Jason wants a Miter Saw really bad now.

I wouldn't mind one myself =) It's pretty awesome.

After doing all the woodworking, I sewed us some bean bags (well, "corn bags" actually). We played a round and of course Jason won and I lost... by a lot, haha.

There was another game we made that day: Kubb (pronounced koob), also known as "Viking Chess". We had never played it. I only heard about it from a friend. After watching some tutorials online, Jason was convinced that was another game we had to have. So, without knowing if we actually liked the game, we made that one too.

That night we tried it out with some friends, and ended up playing 3 rounds. Yep, Jason loves the game. Since we made it, we've played it more times than I can count.

The last one we've made is called Poleish (or Beer Frisbee, Pole Frisbee, BottleBee, Polish Horshoes... lots of names). It was simple to make, but a little more difficult to play. You need to be capable or throwing (aiming) and catching a frisbee... things I will need to improve on if I am ever to successfully play this game.

You put a bottle on top of a pole, each team tries to knock over the other team's bottle with a frisbee.

It's a fun game, but I think Kubb is still our favorite.

A Fun Anniversary Weekend

For our anniversary we stayed at a cabin for a few days. It was absolutely beautiful up there, and the views were amazing

Haha, you can tell in these pictures, we're trying hard not to squint as we smile for the picture. The sun was super crazy bright that day, and I could barely open my eyes without sunglasses on.

Jason, you make me so happy!

We tried seeing "Fiddler on the Roof" at the Sundance Resort outdoor theater...

but after only 30 minutes, we got rained out as the clouds opened up and drenched everyone. Thankfully we brought a couple blankets, and took refuge under them during the downpour. I was amazed how well the blankets held up to the rain, keeping our top half relatively dry. It was crazy how much rain was coming down. We could see the water running off the edge of the blanket. They waited a while to see if the rain would let up, but it didn't, so they decided to cancel the show.

I don't know why, but I had so much fun getting rained out!

And of course, when we finally got to our car, the rain stopped.

A week later we used our rain check tickets, and tried again. We were prepared with ponchos this time, in case it down poured on us again... but it stayed nice and sunny the whole time.

And it was a fantastic show. They did a great job.

I can't believe it's already been 6 years since I married the most amazing man in the world.

I'm an Aunt again!... And again!

My brother and his wife recently had a new baby. She had complications so was born early, and was at Primary Children's for a while. She's now home and will still have an uphill battle, but she's doing really well, and is absolutely adorable.

I love these pictures of my nephews holding their new little sister.

My sister has been trying to adopt for a couple years now. After two children she can't have kids anymore. A little over a month ago, they got a call, and adopted a brand new baby girl.

I love being an aunt!

Some Fun Times

So about a month ago, for Pioneer Day, we went up the canyon with some friends and had a BBQ. We enjoyed some food, and played games and had fun with everyone there. We had a great time, and were so glad you came!

Afterwards we went to a fireworks show that was amazing! Seriously amazing! Even better than the 4th of July fireworks. And the best part is we were super close! There were ashes falling on us! I grew up watching the fireworks from right underneath, so when they go off, they're HUGE... it was the best.

Jason was growing out his beard for a while. He was my mountain man. At the end of the day his beard always looked funny from his collar pushing it up all day.

I made him trim it for my sister's wedding though. Sorry Mountain Man.

I had never been to Red Lobster before (seafood isn't my thing), so we finally went. It took me a few minutes to get over the initial seafood smell, but thankfully it really wasn't that bad. Jason enjoyed his plate of shrimp, while I had some delicious salmon.

A Wedding Cake

Last weekend my little sister got married, and she asked me to make her wedding cake =) I was so nervous that the cake would either not look good, not taste good, would melt in the heat, or topple/collapse. Thankfully, it turned out fine, and I was happy with it.

Here it is!

It's a 14", 10" and 6", and the cake is chocolate and yellow/vanilla.

I took this as evidence that at one point it was perfect (just in case it toppled to the ground during transportation)

A little birthday cake for a little boy

In the middle of making Tamara's wedding cake, I took on another cake for my friend, whose little boy turned one.

I never enjoy trying to make red frosting. It takes a TON of food coloring, to get it to turn red instead of bright hot pink, and usually in the process you end up dying everything bright pink... including my fingers. =) Thankfully, it faded away in time for my sisters wedding.

Big Fish

Yesterday, Jason came home from work, and then we headed up to a small lake with Jason's sister and her husband, for some relaxing evening fishing. Well, within 10 minutes of getting there (literally, no more than a minute after Jason cast out) we saw a big tug on our line.

I reeled it in... The net was barely big enough to hold the fish.

I couldn't believe how big it was!

It was 19 inches long! The biggest fish we have ever caught.

What made it even more amazing is that the hook was barely caught on it's lip. It could have freed itself pretty easily

After taking many pictures to document the moment, Jason decided to release it, since it wasn't majorly injured, or bleeding.

Once it got over the shock of the whole thing, and after little therapy from Jason (the Fish Whisperer) it happily swam away.

The fun didn't end there. There was plenty of fishing in our trip, but not much relaxing. We kept catching fish within minutes of each other. We barely had enough time to reel in the fish and cast it back out before our other line was pulling. When the fish weren't too badly hooked, we let them go (I think we released 2 or 3), but we did end up taking home 7 fish.

Here's another one we caught, and actually took home.

Probably our busiest fishing trip ever. We had a lot of fun.

I Call Shotgun!

Jason got a shotgun a few months ago.

It made him very happy.

We've gone target shooting a few times since then.

Most recently with his sister Christina and her husband Mark.

(I CANNOT throw a clay pigeon to save my life, so it's nice when there's someone there with us who can.)

We had a lot of fun.

Oh, and yes I was there too. Here I am. This is completely posed. I cannot hold up that shotgun for more than 10 seconds before my arm starts shaking. I don't like shooting the shotgun (I like shooting the rifle more). The shotgun kick is strong and it's too heavy for me. But Mark had one that didn't kick as hard, and I liked that one better.

Oh and that cute little golden-doodle puppy is Christina's and his name is Zeke. The more I see Jason with dogs, the more I realize it is inevitable that one day we'll have one. He's just way too happy around them for us to not have one one day.

Chocolate Love

Valentine's Day!

I love flowers. Especially from the man I love so much.

I thought Jason had learned his lesson from last year's attempt at having me choose a favorite truffle brand. (My palette isn't that fine tuned. It's chocolate so it's tastes yummy. It's very difficult for me to choose one over the other.)

But he didn't learn his lesson, and decided to try a chocolate taste-test again (not that I'm complaining - I'll gladly re-do this every year if he likes, haha)

This year's taste-test

Milk Chocolate Bars

Can I really taste the difference between a cheap Hershey bar and a specialty chocolate bar, and do I actually like the specialty one over the cheap one? And most importantly, which one is my favorite?

Again, I had a difficult time choosing one over the other, but I was able to eliminate a few.

So, after a blind taste-test, these were the finalists:

Perugina & Ghiradelli were really good, and very similar. Amano, and Lindt were the only ones that distinctly stood out from the rest. Amano's chocolate flavor was a little more pronounced (probably a little more semi-sweet chocolate than milk chocolate), and Lindt was just so deliciously creamy! It was kind of a toss-up, but I think Lindt won in the end. Mmmm so creamy.

Thanks Jason! Chocolate taste-tests are my favorite. They may be frustrating for you because I have such a difficult time choosing, but it's so yummy.

Maybe next year, we could figure out which brand has the best mint truffles? Mmm or White chocolate... so good.

Ender's Never-Ending Game

So, Jason and I aren't really readers (or so we thought).When I was a kid, I loved loved Roald Dahl's books (The BFG is my favorite book). I remember enjoying reading fun books. I remember if I really liked the book, I could read for hours. Then school reading hit, and that's probably where my enjoyment of reading ended. I never liked any of the books that were assigned, and as I got older, they just got worse. Reading became a burden. I don't have a deep philosophical mind. I can't say what the writer meant by writing certain things certain ways. I enjoyed reading books for the stories. The adventures. The happily-ever-afters. My mind doesn't like to analyze it afterwards and try to conjure up the great meaning. So, for probably the last 10 -15 years, the only books I've read is textbooks. Nothing just for the fun of it.

Anyways, years later, I now find myself reading book after book for the last few months. And why?

Jason: "I really wanna read Ender's Game before we see the movie."

Um, that's random. We aren't "hey let's read a book for the fun of it" readers. We aren't the type of people who love books, and love reading.

But, he did read it, and I did too. I thought that was the end. But then Jason insisted we read "Ender's Shadow". We did. I thought we were done. Nope.

Jason: "We can't NOT read the Speaker series."

Again, we read more of the journey of Ender. The first book. The second. The third. And now we're about to finish the fourth. I think there's also a Shadow series too... that'll probably be next.

I've rediscovered my love of reading. A couple of the books I read in one day. And I probably held my bladder for hours before I finally gave in and put the book down. I don't think I ate anything those days (I did eat dinner...only because Jason would force me to put down the book to eat dinner).

I read a book my sister told me to read, and I loved it. I think it was called "Edenbrook" by Julianne Donaldson. It was a clean, fun, love story. Again, I read it all in one day, and most likely ignored my feelings of hunger and bladder-pressure.

It's been really fun to rediscover how much I love reading. It's been even better to share that with Jason. Obviously, he isn't going to enjoy reading fun love-story books with me. But It's been fun reading all these Ender series books with him. Perhaps we'll find another series that both of us enjoy.

*Oh and bytheway, we had just barely finished reading the book "Ender's Game" when we watched the movie, and the whole time, we'd look over at each other, and say, "Whaaa?" and "Yeeah that's so not right" and "Noooo ..... that's completely wrong..." "Um, really, that's it?" ..... anyways, you get it. We became one of those people. You know, the ones which bash the movie that you thought was good, and enjoyed, but they just keep saying over and over how the book was SO much better and the movie had so many things wrong and blah blah blah. So yeah, we can never fully enjoy that movie, because we read the book. And it was SO much better, haha.
