Silver Award - A disquiet mind | Tasmanian Conceptual Photographer

Feeling very lucky, I was awarded Silver in the International Loupe Awards. The image is titled "A disquiet mind". This entire concept was born, shot, edited and entered into the competition all in one day. I wasn't going to enter this year, I had nothing prepared, nothing that I thought was good enough...and then I received an email LAST CHANCE entries close today, and here I was bored out of my mind (climbing the walls in my mind). We had just moved house and I had sprained and torn the ligaments in my ankle, I was supposed to be resting my foot, but as I was sitting there looking at all the boxes that still needed to be unpacked and furniture that still needed to be re-arranged, the feeling of restlessness just increased and this concept was born. Next year I will be more prepared, next year I will leave myself more time...maybe

What is that saying "nothing makes you more productive than the last minute"

This shoot was inspired by a silver pair of ski pants which my son found in an Opp shop. It is evolving into a series of images which follows a persons arrival, watching their internal struggle with the want to blend and conform, versus their innate need to be able to express their own individuality, in an environment that is new and unknown.

I needed my favourite model to come visit me to start this series, so when Alex arrived we brainstormed some mood boards wrangled Katherine into doing hair and make up and then proceeded to make an alien styled shoot.

We shot a behind the scenes video on my phone so although not the best quality you can see some of the laughs that happened on the day. Note to self, try to find a white face paint that is easy to use. In all there were three shoots that weekend and I will show the other two as they are edited.

So a couple of days ago while shooting with my favourite model Miss Alex, we decided to pull out one of my $5 thrift store finds a SX70 polaroid camera, I loaded it up with polaroid film from the impossible dream and shot a couple of frames....oh my I was so excited then dissappointed, not one of them worked out, could be one of a hundred of reasons, but it was an interesting experiment anyway.

These are the original attempts, you can see they each got progressively better, but with only 10 frames per pack (and its not cheap) I stopped at 3, will investigate a little further in "how to shoot an instant camera" a little more I think.

It can be a strange feeling you get while wearing lingerie or a sexy dress in a strange room, then have someone pointing a camera at you directing you to push your hip this way, move your arms across, turn your head that way now hold, relax your shoulder and smile. It might even feel a little intimidating at first. But if you can be brave and step out of your comfort zone, give yourself over to the experience of being able to explore your femininity and not having to worry about anything else for a little while, you just might find you like it. Thank you to Ally, Katherine and Nikki for being fearless and totally gorgeous. More images can be seen here

Women are beautiful at every stage of their life, although many of us (women) don't think so. We are always the first to criticize ourselves. I know I always shy away from the camera and I constantly hear from myself and others "I hate being photographed"..... if only I was thinner, shorter, taller, ...you get the idea. So while we are hiding from the camera, life is zooming by and then you hear yourself saying if only I was younger! Even worse as a mother who has children that love looking through photo albums, is hearing, "mum why aren't there any photos of you?" Regret is something that you have the ability to avoid. Do something for yourself, embrace who you are now. Need I say anymore.....book your session

George Town Excursion

With my limited travel experiences around our new home of Tasmania, a fellow photographer and friend suggested an early morning lighthouse shoot somewhere near George Town. A 3am start kicked off my morning, arriving at our destination at around 5am, only to find that the gates are closed with no opening times listed. After a quick trip to the nearest town and an even quicker conversation of jumping the fence, we returned to find gates open...yay. All we needed was for the sun to rise (7.30ish). Some moody clouds made for dramatic lighthouse images while we were waiting....waiting....waiting for the sun. Down comes the rain, no sunrise, no light. Oh well moody skies are always my thing. Next stop was a shipwrecked boat which had washed onshore a couple of minutes away, so off we go in the rain to play on the sand with a boat. Cold and soaked, we stopped for breakfast before continuing our Tamar, George Town trip. Further along we found a fantastic waterfall, with a near miss of camera gear floating down the river. A few more stops for boats, docks and clouds, the sun had finally made an appearance and the hours flew by. We ended a great day with a late lunch/early pasta dinner and fantastic images

At the magical time just before the sun sinks below the horizon, the light is warm and beautiful. This light lasts about 5 mins and if you blink you have missed it.

New topic this week the brief was Blue. I chose to do some infrared photography, I had messed about with this a few years ago, without much success. My old camera couldnt handle the infrared filter without getting huge hot spots in the middle of the image, enter new camera, still not the greatest one for infrared, but no hot spots but really long exposures. All the following images were between 10sec and 30seconds long. Really hard on a windy day. Traditionally infrared is black and white, so I have done a few, but one of the ongoing trends is faux blue infrared. I love that you can make it look like it is snowing in the middle of summer with dark dramatic skies at lunchtime. Enjoy

Last weeks challenge "Words". This idea was immediate, as soon as I heard what the subject was I knew what I wanted to shoot. My eldest son is on the brink of teenage-hood and we are experiencing some of the attitude that comes along with it. My son thought it was a great idea and was all for the silence of the tape. Lots of images to share. These were taken on a recent camera club event in Launceston. Vineyards werent really on the offical agenda, but we took a side trip and made the most of the time we had in there. Our side adventure then landed us in City Park where you see the most interesting subjects....people, flowers and even monkeys.
