Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp: We Aren't That Social

OK, so the above title doesn't exactly come as a complete surprise.
After all, Johnny Depp is known for keeping a very low-profile while Angelina Jolie is pretty much a homebody who keeps busy telling Shiloh she can't have a dead bird as a pet.

But it's still kinda cool to hear it directly from two of the prettiest people on the planet…

"We're both not that social," Jolie reveals to Entertainment Weekly. "I don't think either one of us goes out of our house, especially in France. We're both locked away."

Which probably explains why, believe it or not, these two had never actually bumped into each other until they showed up to shoot their upcoming flick The Tourist.

In fact, to hear Depp talk about Jolie and her significant other, there's a sense that he gets his celebrity news and gossip just like the rest of us.

"So much has been written about Angie and Brad [Pitt]," he says. "They're sort of the Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton of our era. I knew she was a big star, but I didn't know what to expect...."

Is it really him? Does it really matter at this point? 'Cause nothing's gonna stop the posthumous Michael Jackson money train.

On the heels of the premiere of the instantly controversial "Breaking News" comes word that the second single (but first official) from Michael, a duet with Akon recorded a mere, um, three years ago, will be released Monday.

Just three more sleeps! But with all due respect to Akon, what makes this song so special?

Easy: it was handpicked by Michael himself.

"Hold My Hand" owes its pole position to Jackson, who penned a handwritten note—now the property of his estate—which expressed his desire to make that song his first single. As it happens, it got released a little earlier than he would have liked, leaking out unfinished in 2008.

This, however, is a different "Hold My Hand."

"The world was not ready to hear 'Hold My Hand' when it leaked a couple years ago," Akon said. "We were devastated about it. But its time has definitely come; now in its final state, it has become an incredible, beautiful, anthemic song. I'm so proud to have had the chance to work with Michael, one of my all time idols."

In addition to Akon, Michael enlisted the help of 50 Cent and Lenny Kravitz to complete the album, as both singers feature on the new release.

The first single will be released globally at 12:01 ET on Monday, premiering on michaeljackson.com and subsequently be available for digital downloading.

The album, which culls together nine years of material, will be released Dec. 14. Here's the complete track listing:

Justin Bieber injured his knee last night while performing a concert in Cleveland. But while he was visibly hobbled, gimpinga around the stage, the cutie crooner soldiered on like the pro he is.

So how bad is it? Here's what the Biebs' rep tells E! News...

"Justin was seen limping on stage last night, however, he finished his set. We are hoping it's just a bad sprain," says the rep.

Another source in the Bieber camp says the 16-year-old star retreated to his tour bus immediately after the show ended to nurse his injury.

Last time Bieber was dinged up in concert he wound up fracturing his right foot, landing in a cast.

"I tripped over something on stage coming down the ramp and felt my ankle roll in a very bad way," he tweeted at the time. "Turns out I fractured my foot and had to finish the song on a broken foot. After I was done I was in such pain I skipped the encore and got off stage and back to see the medics."

Still it beats getting killed on South Park, right?

Speedy recovery, Justin. And maybe it's time to beef up that concert insurance.

Mr. Bitter Twitter: Kanye Tweets In His Today Show Cancellation

Well, we are shocked. Shocked!

If you've been stuck under a rock for the past few days (or stranded at sea with nothing but Spam and Pop Tarts to keep you going), then let us fill you in: Kanye West doesn't care about the Today show.

So much so that he's decided to inform the show's producers—via Twitter, of course—that they can take his forthcoming performance guest slot and shove it.

You see, despite the Today show not only managing to bring the celebrity interview to new levels of awkwardness, they still seemed to think that Kanye "Roll With the Punches" West would have no problem gracing their stage with his presence. On yesterday's show, Matt Lauer even reminded viewers that Kanye would be returning to sing later this month.

Well, guess again, Matt.

"I'm not performing on the Today Show for obvious reasons," West tweeted from Dubai last night. "I'm so happy the world got to see just a small piece of 'the set up.' I blatantly said I'm not performing on a tweet and to everyone around me and the next day they still announced a performance."

Guess they're not followers. Maybe next time try informing them through a more official channel? Like, say, by using more than 140 characters and not just sending it straight into the ether? Just a thought.

Still, there's no stopping Kanye when he's on a roll!

"Do you guys see what I'm saying now…this is just a small slice of the day to day bulls--t that goes on that helps to precipitate…the idea that I such an asshole…cause when I don't perform oh noooow I'm the one that's crazy or a jerk!

"If I hadn't tweeted about how they set me up at the show they would have never played the extra footage that displayed how disrespectful…I want you guys to look at that footage and start to put everything together now. It's very simple to call someone angry or spoiled or…the one thousand names I've been called but it's harder to try to take a look at what's really behind the curtain."

After a few more words airing his displeasure about NBC playing his VMA audio under his interview, he wanted to make it clear his beef wasn't personal.

"Right now I'm not complaining. I'm tweeting because I'm so happy you guys got to see this s--t really go down!!!!:)))))))!!!! FINALLY!!! And I don't hate Matt Lauer…We don't promote hate. That's the whole point!!! I promote love and truth!"

And, what with him being the bigger man and all, he is more than happy to preemptively absolve the crew. 'Cause he's magnanimous like that.

Ah, well. Who needs the Today show? From the looks of things, he's more than welcome on Conan.

Whether or not you think that's accurate, the 17-year-old has a natural ability to create controversy every time she says something, wears something or flashes everybody. And now the Gossip Girl star is here to tell you that none of this nonsense is her fault...

Everyone's like, 'Wow, why is she upset, and why is she so miserable about things?'" Taylor says in the November-December issue of Revolver, before going on to lament about how she wound up here.

"My parents signed me up with Ford [Modeling] at the age of 2. No 2-year-old wants to be working, but I had no choice," she points out. "My whole life, I was in and out of school. I didn't have friends. I was working constantly and I didn't have a real life."

The former reality-TV love seeker was in a Los Angeles court this morning, where a judge granted a restraining ordering a shutterbug to stay at least 100 yards away from her for the next three years.

The judge sided with Tequila after the photog, Garry Sun, tried to get his own order against the pipsqueak star first.

Sun filed his request in L.A. Court Superior Court last month, claiming that the batty starlet had some armed men drive to his girlfriend's Texas house, kidnap her and fly her to L.A.

Both Tequila and the photog's girlfriend said that was bunk. And that's when Tequila decided to file for her own restraining order, claiming Sun was harassing her.

Girl sure knows how to attract 'em.

What would you do if you found out your 20-something son was dating a woman who was older than you are?

You’d freak out, right? Well the mother of Madonna’s latest boytoy, a 24 year-old dancer named Brahim, is doing just that. Brahim’s mom told the National Enquirer that her “mouth fell open” when her son called her and told her that he was in a relationship with 52 year-old Madonna.

Brahim’s mom is 44, eight years younger than her son’s girlfriend. What’s more is that she’s a Muslim and isn’t happy that her son is dating someone outside their faith:

"My mouth fell open when I realized that my son was Madonna’s new boyfriend,” said 44-year-old Patricial Vidal. “I’m still trying to come to terms with it.”

Her son is professional dancer Brahim Zaibat, 24. He met the 52 year-old Material Girl in September when he performed at the launch of her and daughter Lourdes’ new clothing line in New York.

Madonna… reportedly made the first move, telling Brahim their astrological signs were compatible.

The two have since cuddled at dance clubs and indulged in a passionate makeout session at a London nightclub.

Meanwhile, Patricia - a divorced mother of four who lives in Lyon, France - said her son told her about his new girlfriend in a phone call, adding there was an eight-year age gap.

Patricia thought Brahim meant his lady friend was eight years older than him, but then he said: “No, she’s eight years older than you - and her name is Madonna.”

A stunned Patricia says: “Madonna was already a big star when I was a schoolgirl, let alone when Brahim was growing up. The whole situation is very strange.”

Brahim is a devout Muslim who shuns alcohol and cigarettes. Now his mom worries Madonna may lure him into a lifestyle that contradicts his religious beliefs.

“I certainly wouldn’t say we’re overjoyed by his relationship with a non-Muslim,” she said. “The fact that she’s Madonna doesn’t make things easier.”

The Oscar winning actress may be able to credit her slender frame to her apparent inability to cook a good meal.

In the accompanying interview for the magazine Angelina revealed she is such a bad cook that her six-year-old son Pax is better in the kitchen than she is.

Angelina also speaks about various aspects of her home life with partner Brad Pitt and their six children, including how Pax's culinary skills far outweigh her own.

The Tourist actress also says she feels her nine-year-old son Maddox, the first child she adopted, actually raised her, and is incredibly aware of her feelings.

When Nick Lachey announced his engagement to Vanessa Minnillo it was reported that Simpson was 'saddened' by the news - but not so insists the 30-year-old singer/actress.

Simpson rang into Ryan Seacrest's KIIS FM breakfast show this morning to promote her new Christmas album, Rejoyce and set the record straight at the same time.

Jane Fonda declares 'I'm so lucky' after breast cancer scare

Jane Fonda has revealed that she is recovering after a breast cancer scare.

The 72-year-old actress and fitness guru underwent surgery a few days ago after her doctor discovered a small cancerous tumour during a routine mammogram check-up.

But she says she has been given the all-clear.

‘I had a scare with a non-invasive breast cancer but it is ALL OUT NOW!!!’ Miss Fonda wrote on her internet blog yesterday.

‘I am so lucky,’ she added. ‘We got it early and it was, as I said, non-invasive. I want to thank my friends and fans who have written beautiful letters. It has meant a lot to me.’

The lump was found several weeks ago, but doctors quickly discovered the cancer had not spread.

‘She’s 100 per cent cancer free,’ said her publicist in a statement yesterday.

‘She’s completely fine and it’s business as usual for her.’

The scare came just weeks before the release of Miss Fonda’s new health and fitness DVD.

Non-invasive breast cancer, also known as cancer in situ, is where the cancerous cells have not spread beyond the breast ducts or lobules.

It accounts for about 20 per cent of new breast cancer cases and when treated quickly, the five-year survival rate is said to be 100 per cent.

Treatment normally involves either a lumpectomy, often followed by radiation, or a mastectomy, where the breast is surgically removed.

In Miss Fonda’s case, her representatives said doctors were so confident they had cut out all the cancer that she did not require any further radiation or chemotherapy treatment.

The double Oscar-winning actress had breast implants when she was married to her first husband, French film director Roger Vadim.

Her admission about the cosmetic enhancements led to claims she was misleading fans who bought her workout videos by giving the impression her body was shaped totally by exercise.

The thrice-married actress had the implants removed 20 years ago, saying they made her feel ‘unwomanly’.

The daughter of Hollywood legend Henry Fonda and sister of Easy Rider actor Peter Fonda, she found fame in the 1960s with roles in Cat Ballou and Barbarella, before winning her first Best Actress Academy Award for Klute in 1972.

She won a second seven years later for her performance in Coming Home, and was nominated for a further five Oscars.

After announcing her retirement from movies in 1991, she returned five years ago to star in the box office hit Monster-in-Law alongside Jennifer Lopez.

She also won a Tony nomination on Broadway last year for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play for 33 Variations. Her latest film, Peace, Love & Misunderstanding, in which she stars with Rosanna Arquette and Chace Crawford, is being released early next year.

She is now set to go straight back to work promoting her comeback Primetime Fitness DVD in the U.S.

After selling tens of million copies of her workout tapes in the 1980s and 1990s, she is re-launching her fitness brand with a line of exercise equipment.

You'd never think that this was the first time Angelina Jolie directed a film.

The actress was on set again yesterday in Estergom, Hungary, shooting her Bosnian war epic.

And from the confident way she was guiding and instructing her team, the 35-year-old looked more like a veteran director than an inexperienced first-timer.

Dressed in a black coat and trousers and with a huge pair of sunglasses on, Jolie seemed to be everywhere at once as she mimicked firing a gun and made expansive arm gestures.

Her first feature film is a love story set against the backdrop of the Bosnian war, and tells the story of a romance between a Bosnian woman and Serbian man.

Jolie wrote the original screenplay, and she is also producing the film with the help of Graham King and Tim Headington, who she worked with on The Tourist.

It's clear that war-torn societies are something the actress can really connect with, after all her humanitarian work for the United Nations.

The whole Jolie-Pitt clan are currently in Hungary hanging out whilst mum works.

Eva Mendes and Will Ferrell both enjoyed a kiss on TV last night - with a buck-toothed puppet!

Appearing on Spanish TV show, El Hormiguero over in Madrid, Spain, the funny pair were larking around while promoting their new movie, The Other Guys.

Eva leaned in for a smooch with the furry puppet as part of a skit on the show.

Not to be outdone, Will then grabbed the furry animal in a passionate embrace.

New York to Sydney in just 2hrs 30mins: Nasa to develop 'hypersonic' passenger jets that travel at five times the speed of sound

NASA is planning to build hypersonic jets that will fly through the Earth’s atmosphere and slash flight times around the world to a few hours at most.

The US space agency wants to manufacture a craft that would travel at five times the speed of sound and bring in a new age of aircraft akin to a turbo-charged Concorde.

Travelling at such speed would reduce the flight time from New York to Sydney to around two-and-a-half hours, from the 21 hours it is now.

The project is thought to be aimed at making a reusable aircraft that could fly to Mars but, as with previous space technology, it could have a huge impact upon passenger transport too.

NASA's experimental X-43A scramjet aircraft which is capable if reaching almost seven times the speed of sound

Under the NASA Aeronautics 2010 proposal, the space agency will allocate $5million per year for the next three years to make the new aircraft a reality.

The aim is to create something which can carry passengers through the atmosphere, descend and land safely before being reused.

According to the proposal, engineers will look into ‘entry, descent and landing of high-mass vehicles entering into planetary atmospheres’ and ‘airbreathing access to space’

NASA is also aware of the many challenges it faces to build such a machine.

The proposal says: ‘The hypersonic heating environment, coupled with the emphasis on reusability, creates additional severe technology challenges for materials, material coatings, and structures that not only carry the aerodynamic loads of the air but also repeatedly sustain high thermal loads requiring long-life and durability while minimizing weight.

A hypersonic aircraft would reach Mach 5, or five times the speed of sound.

In June this year an experimental scramjet aircraft set a record for hypersonic flight, blazing through the air for more than three minutes at Mach 6, or more than 4,500 mph.

The X-51A Waverider scramjet was released from a B-52 bomber last week before its engine took it to Mach 6 and it flew autonomously for 200 seconds.

Scramjets work by using oxygen rushing in through the engine at supersonic speeds to ignite hydrogen fuel.

In October Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic SpaceShipTwo completed its solo maiden flight after being carried aloft by its mothership to an altitude of 45,000ft and released over the Mojave Desert.

Built by famed aircraft designer Burt Rutan, the craft aims to be the first opportunity for space tourism at something close to an affordable price - tickets cost $200,000 (£125,000).

The craft is based on a prototype that won a $10million (£6.3million) prize in 2004 for being the first manned private rocket to reach space.

The six-passenger ship will undergo rigorous testing before it can carry tourists to space.

Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, Demi Lovato. Three stars with a range of breakdowns—and virtually matching sets of Disney ears.

Coincidence? Or something more? Are Magic Kingdom stars cursed?

The same basic question has been asked of Brat Packers and garden-variety child stars, and the answer is the always no.

But before dismissing the Disney curse out of hand, we ran the idea by a successful TV director, who, oh, by the way, was himself once a Disney kid star.

"If you don't have a good solid background, there's all sort of ways you can get into trouble," Kevin Corcoran told us today, "and it's not just from Disney, it's at any studio."

Corcoran, one of the so-called "Disney Legends," whose credits include the family classic Old Yeller, knows well that last point: He had siblings who as children worked at Disney, and siblings who worked elsewhere. "They all tuned out fine," he said.

So if the notion that a Disney pay stub is a one-way ticket to a mugshot (like Lohan), a wig-out (like Spears), a rehab stay (like Lovato), or even a felony conviction (like Mouseketeer Darlene Gillespie), then what about the idea that Disney kids are under more pressure than Nick kids, music kids or other non-ear-wearing kids?

"Because the company [Disney] represents wholesomeness…there may be a little more scrutiny then if it's a child that's at a different company that's not just in the G[-rated] product area," Corcoran said.

The bottom line: Yes, Lovato's hurting, and, yes, she's under the microscope, but no, she's not cursed.

Katy Perry on Russell Brand: I Found My "Great Man of God"

Newly betrothed Katy Perry has nothing but praise for her hubby of two weeks, Russell Brand.

The pop star tells December's Harper's Bazaar, "I always knew I wanted a great man of God, someone who was going to be an inspiration for people and also be a lovely husband and father."

The British funnyman was a sex and heroin addict before famously sobering up after he had a spiritual awakening.

Katy gushes on, "We're at different places in our lives, but we can still grow together. He's thought-provoking, articulate, a real advocate," before adding, "I also definitely wanted to have a laugh. I have all that in him."

Must be election fever, 'cause Jay-Z's in a presidential state of mind. Seriously.

In an interview with the BBC today, the rap superstar mulled the possibility of becoming the Hova in chief of the United States. But don't expect it to happen anytime soon.

"Give me a chance," Jay-Z said. "Maybe in eight years, I'll be the president."

Beyoncé as first lady? We'll take it.

The hip-hopster said his blueprint for the future includes more music, more business ventures and perhaps even the hard-knock life of politics.

Jay-Z admits that it's a rough road, noting the trials Barack Obama has faced his first two years in office and yesterday's difficult midterm results which saw the Republicans take over the House of Representatives.

But is he disappointed with the nation's first African-American president?

"In order to judge someone, you have to judge what they inherit," said Jigga. "He inherited the worst econony, war, just a horrible time in American history. So if we think he can solve that, I mean, we don't think he's God, do we?"

In other words, Obama's got his own "99 Problems."

"He's a human being. He's going to need time to figure that out," he added. "In order to get that sort of success and that dream, you have to go through some peaks and valleys. It's been two years."

Carter's come a long way from his days growing up in the projects of Brooklyn's Bed-Stuy neighborhood. Now he hobnobs with the rich, famous and powerful and has the ear of the current prez and dines with Bubba.

"For me, being with Obama or having dinner with Bill Clinton is crazy," the Grammy winner said. "It's mind-blowing because where I come from is just another world. We were just ignored by politicians—by America in general."

While Hova in the White House remains a dream for now, Jay-Z is currently in the U.K. working with Kanye West on a joint album and could hit stores by February.

We can't help but wonder if Megan Fox will be in the video for this one too.

Yep. Just when you finally got "Love the Way You Lie" out of your head, Rihanna and Eminem are back with a sequel to the song which will appear on the "Only Girl (In the World)" singer's upcoming album Loud.

While there are a few changes made here that alter it a bit from the original—the fact that Eminem is now the one receiving the "featuring" credit since it is Rihanna who dominates the vocals, as well as a slightly slower pacing than the more in-your-face lyrics and overall approach of part one—the track doesn't really venture too far off from the duo's previous collaboration.

Why's Everybody Hating on LeAnn Rimes, Anyway?

You speak of other extramarital artists such as Tori Spelling and La Jolie. Rimes has suffered a seeming barrage of criticism over her admitted affair with Eddie Cibrian, most recently from readers of Shape magazine.

The lazy explanation for this bile would have something to do with Rimes' God-fearin', prayer-circlin' country music audience. But it's also the wrong explanation:

Because, actually, there hasn't really been a backlash. Not when you look at the numbers.

Most of the vitriol against Rimes came from Shape magazine readers, after she sucked it in for that magazine's cover. Readers complained about the cover being given to a homewrecker; the editor of the magazine apologized, and then didn't.

But as CMT.com writer Alison Bonaguro points out to me:

"I don't know that there has been that much backlash. With Shape, it was 40 readers complaining out of 6 million readers."

In other words, it was about .007 percent of all the people who, for some reason, read Shape magazine.

What does that mean?

"I think maybe Rimes haters," says Bonaguro, "or people who are critical of her, are more outspoken."

Right. They're louder, but that's about it.

So why did anyone complain about Rimes at all?

Well, there may be a whole lot of trailer hoppin' out here in the City of Sin, but in the country music industry, breakups and divorces are still considered relatively bizarre and strange—scandalous news, in other words.

"At this moment," Bonaguro dishes, "the three stories that are leading in popularity for CMT.com are Billy Ray Cyrus's divorce, Randy Travis's divorce and then the Rimes scandal—not that Keith Urban had a new album or Taylor Swift sold more than a million."

Yes. Taylor Swift is now in the elite company of Garth Brooks.

Not that anyone, it seems, cares.

Is the Real Demi Lovato-Ashley Greene Story Being Covered Up?

According to reps for Ashley Greene and Demi Lovato, there was no "Greene effect" on the Disney star's recent breakdown.

"There is no truth to this rumor or any other rumors of conflict between the girls," Ash's publicist tells E! News.

Funny, ‘cause we have multiple sources who witnessed the heated exchange of words, starting from Demi's end.

But reps never fib—or cover stuff up—so we're sure D and A are totally BFFs.

Fact is, Ash being in South America with Joe Jonas was probably just the breaking point for Demi. That, and a scuffle with a back-up dancer who was also in the airport in Peru—but that was over stuff entirely unrelated to the Twilight star.

And yes, sorry, but that "scuffle" happened, too. Hell, if the almighty People is even reporting it, that says something!

Lovato checked herself into a treatment center for many, many issues, not just boy woes. Again, props to the Disney darling; that takes guts at her age.

Thing is, publicists aren't the only ones scrambling to save face right now. Disney is also on high alert, enforcing those nondisclosure agreements it has its worker kids sign. You know, like all of Demi's Sonny With a Chance costars?

Basically the mega-empire that is Disney wants to shut down any possibility of people talking about all this, unless the cast is sending Demi "best wishes" sentiments.

Even Lovato's dad—who has been estranged from his daughter for a couple of years—isn't allowed to go on camera without Disney's OK.

So what's the big secret?

Unfortunately, we're hearing there are a few demons from the Disney set that suits want to make sure stay out of print.

We'll oblige, then. Just wish Demi the best right now.

Miley Cyrus Is Joining a Sorority

Miley Cyrus is going to college.

The Hannah Montana superstar's rep confirms that…

Cyrus will star in So Undercover, an action comedy in which she'll play a private investigator hired by the FBI to go undercover in a college sorority.

Directed by What Happens in Vegas director Tom Vaughan, filming will begin next month. The script is by Allan Loeb (Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps) and Steven Pearl (The Switch).

No studio is attached yet, but Exclusive Media is set to fully finance and coproduce the pic along with Cyrus' mom, Tish.

"So Undercover is a fun mix of action and comedy and has a powerful female lead that Miley was drawn to playing," Tish said in a statement.

Miley will next be seen in LOL: Laughing Out Loud opposite Demi Moore and Ashley Greene.

Well, probably everybody, which is why the pouty-lipped thesp is attached to star in the sci-fi thriller Under the Skin, playing a gorgeous E.T. who eats men for breakfast, according to trade reports.

Like, literally.

At some point, though, Johansson's coldly efficient character starts feeling warmer and fuzzier toward her human prey, and ends up battling her own kind for the last word in planetary dominance.

"Taking her point of view throughout, the film presents a unique look at our world through alien eyes," is how FilmNation presented the project to the American Film Market.

Sexy Beast's Jonathan Glazer cowrote the script, based on the Michel Faber novel, and is set to direct the film starting in late spring 2011.

Lil Wayne "Free at Last" Following "Special Precautions" by Jail Guards

Lil Wayne's been sprung.

The rapper's out of solitary and back in the real world after serving eight months of his one-year gun sentence at New York's Rikers Island, the New York Department of Corrections confirms to E! News.

But because of his high profile,Wayne wasn't let loose according to the jail's norms.

So what special precautions were taken to slip him out under the radar?

Well, according to a DOC spokesman, the normally 75-100 prisoners released daily are loaded on buses and taken to a courthouse, where their loved ones or friends meet them for pickup.

Not the case with Wayne.

"He left according to standard procedures in a correction vehicle, but not with others," said the department rep. "It's unusual in the sense that if you have a high-profile inmate, you have to transport him individually. It's a modification of our standard procedure. In this case different arrangements were made because of his extraordinarily high profile. He was dropped at an undisclosed location and met by his associates."

Weezy is headed to Miami for a welcome home party, said his longtime manager, Cortez Bryant, who tweeted "FREE AT LAST!!!!!!!"

The DOC spokesman added that the whole operation went incredibly "smooth" and Wanye, real name Dwayne Carter Jr., left the jail "sometime prior to 9 a.m."

To his relief, we're sure.

"I was never scared, worried nor bothered by the situation," Lil Wayne said Tuesday through Weezythanxyou.com, a website he set up to communicate with his fans from jail.

Wayne, who also released a Billboard No. 1 album last month, I Am Not a Human Being, had spent the tail end of his prison sentence in "punitive segregation," i.e., solitary, as punishment for sneaking headphones and a charger for an MP3 player into his cell earlier this year. He spent 23 hours a day alone in there until this morning, when he most likely discovered he had a new friend—in, well, the highest place.

President Bill Clinton yesterday had called him "smart," saying he hopes he'll never land behind bars again.

"This guy's smart. And he's got abilities. And he's got a new chance now. And what I hope is that this is not just something to brand him as a cool guy, but that it'll never happen again to him," Clinton said during an interview, adding that he hoped he "has a good life now."

We're sure he's already started to.

Is MySpace About to Get Shut Down?

News Corp. COO Chase Carey has put executives at MySpace on notice: Get the social network business fixed fast, or else.

"We've been clear that MySpace is a problem," Carey told Wall Street analysts in an earnings call. "The current losses are not acceptable or sustainable."

He says he's optimistic about MySpace's new focus on social entertainment.

But with traffic numbers that "are not going in the right direction," Carey wants to see "a clear path to profitability" on a timetable measured "in quarters, not in years."

The company doesn't say how much MySpace makes. But the category in News Corp.'s financial report that's dominated by MySpace lost $156 million in the quarter that ended in September vs. a loss of $126 million in the same period last year, on revenues of $298 million, down 25.5%.

News Corp. paid about $327 million for MySpace in 2005 -- before Facebook took off to become the No. 1 social network business.

Carey pooh-poohed speculation that News Corp. might be interested in buying parts of Yahoo, although he didn't rule anything out. "Our general preference is to build businesses, not buy businesses," he said. "We're not shopping for anything."

Separately, Carey wouldn't say how much Cablevision finally agreed to pay to resolve the contract dispute that left its 3.1 million subscribers unable to see Fox programming -- including some World Series games -- for two weeks.

But Carey said that the Federal Communications Commission made a bad situation worse by failing to say from the start that it wouldn't become involved -- and hinting that it might act if the standoff lasted too long.

"It was clear (Cablevision) wanted to drag the government in," Carey said.
