Coming soon to Ben-Gurion Airport: Glatt kosher meat restaurant at departure terminal.

Due to a growing demand, kosher consumers will soon be able to enjoy a fleishig meal while waiting for their flight. The restaurant will be located in the duty-free area.

New Ukrainian Dairy Products

The Federation of Jewish Communities of the CIS - DONETSK, Ukraine – A series of new kosher dairy foods have recently been introduced to the Ukrainian market. The production of these products was arranged by the Ukrainian Kashrut Committee (UK), based in Donetsk.

The “Delicatessen Brynza” and the “Bulgarian Brynza” cheeses will please consumers wishing to keep the laws of Kashrut. The former is sure to be a treat, with pieces of cheese and olives combined in a hot-flavored marinade.

Just as the other dairy products issued by the Ukrainian Kashrut Committee, these products are made from Chalav Yisrael milk and produced in an ecologically-clean region of Ukraine under the supervision of mashgichim – kosher supervisors of the Kashrut Committee. Consumers should be aware that only dairy products with “UK CHALAV YISRAEL” marked at the top of the package are certified as kosher. These dairy products are already available on the shelves of kosher shops.

Apart from these new dairy products, the Ukrainian Kashrut Committee has overseen the production of a range of other products that are designated “parve,” neither meat nor dairy. These include potato dumplings, potato and mushroom dumplings, and cherry dumplings.

UK regularly produces a series of kosher dairy products, available to Donetsk Jews and to other cities in Ukraine by special order. These items include sour cream, Bio Kefir, Bio Ryazhenka, two different types of yogurt, butter, cottage cheese, cheese cream, Hollander cheese, cheddar cheese, ice cream, concentrated milk, and milk in tetra-packs.

Kosher restaurant and catering service coming to Des Moines

[Des Moines Register] By Joanne Boeckman A sign in the window next door to Maccabee’s Deli at 1150 Polk Blvd. in Des Moines indicates a restaurant and catering service are coming soon. Rabbi Yossi Jacobson, director of the Judaic Resource Center that owns Maccabee’s, said the restaurant should be ready for business in about four to six months. The restaurant and catering will offer kosher, traditional Jewish foods. Those who prefer non-dairy and vegetarian foods will find many menu items amenable to their diets.

Jacobson said a chef, most likely from Israel, will be hired to run the restaurant and deli.
Maccabee’s Deli is a kosher deli near the corner of University Avenue. It has been in operation almost 17 years and is open for lunch Sundays and Tuesdays through Fridays. The addition of the restaurant means hours will be expanded, as the restaurant will serve a full dinner and Sunday morning breakfast which will include lox and bagels, among other options. Free Internet service will be available, plus the selection of foods and wines in the grocery section will be expanded.

Five More Gluten-Free Chex Cereals Hit Shelves This Summer

Chex Expands Mainstream Gluten-Free Offering While Maintaining Same Delicious Taste and Nutrition

Chex is rolling out big news in cereal aisles this summer as five more great-tasting, wholesome Chex cereals will now be gluten-free. Corn Chex, Honey Nut Chex, Chocolate Chex, Cinnamon Chex and Strawberry Chex are beginning to appear now on grocers’ shelves, and by early summer they will be widely available across the
country. In addition, www.Chex.com/GlutenFree will be updated with a menu of delicious, glutenfree recipes made with crunchy Chex cereals.

All Chex gluten-free cereals are OU Kosher Certified. Three cereals are dairy and three are parve. Chocolate Chex, Cinnamon Chex and Strawberry Chex are dairy. Corn Chex, Rice Chex and Honey Nut Chex are parve.

To verify that the cereal is the gluten-free formula, consumers are strongly encouraged to look for “Gluten-Free” on Chex cereal packaging. The words “Gluten-Free” will appear near the ingredient declaration on package side panels and may also
appear on front panel. It’s also important to note that Wheat Chex and Multi-Bran Chex are not gluten-free cereals.

Yankees Fantasy Camp Goes Kosher

Five Towns Jewish Times - The New York Yankees have announced the addition of strictly kosher and Shabbat accommodations at their November 2009 and January 2010 Fantasy Camps. Glatt kosher food will be provided by Weberman Foods with OK supervision. A Friday Dream Game will also be played so Shomer Shabbat Jews can participate.

Kosher campers will fully participate in all regular camp activities and have three strictly kosher meals served daily. The camp will offer traditional Shabbat services Friday night and Saturday, as well as provide special Shabbat speakers and programming.

For 6 days and 7 nights, campers experience life in the Big Leagues as they dress in full Yankees uniform and share the same spring training locker room and fields as the real New York Yankees.

Recall: Publix 100% Whole Wheat Sliced Bagels

The manufacturer of Publix 100% Whole Wheat Sliced Bagels is recalling a limited number of 12oz packaging of 100% Whole Wheat Sliced Bagels with lot code date of 10491 and 11291 as they may contain undeclared Egg. The lot code date may be found printed on the clip that closes the bag. Persons who have an allergy to Egg run the risk of a serious or possible life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the affected product. Product is kosher certified by Kehila Kosher. The UPC number may be found on the side label below the Nutrition Facts panel:

The product was distributed throughout the chain to include stores in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee.

“The recall was initiated after the discovery of Egg Bagels packaged inside a 100% Whole Wheat Sliced Bagel packaging. This resulted in the undeclared Egg ingredient,” said Jeff Gerber, Western Bagel Baking Corporations Quality Assurance Manager. "As part of Publix commitment to food safety, they are asking customers to return the product for a full refund or replacement. There have been no reported cases of illness. Consumers with questions may contact Publix at 1-800-242-1227."

Listerine PocketPaks change + Ice Cream Shop Policy from cRc

Johnson & Johnson, the manufacturer of LISTERINE POCKETPAKS has informed KOF-K Kosher Supervision that they will be discontinuing kosher certification of LISTERINE POCKETPAKS as of July 1, 2009. In anticipation of this change, Johnson & Johnson has revised packaging to no longer bear the KOF-K Kosher symbol. Due to potential consumer confusion, Kof-K Kosher Supervision recommends LISTERINE POCKETPAKS only when bearing the Kof-K symbol.

With the summer months upon us, the cRc would like to take this opportunity to reiterate its policy and opinion regarding the purchase of ice cream from shops that are not certified kosher. Unless the entire shop is under a reliable hashgacha, no open product should be purchased without the consumer personally inspecting each item. Any ice cream must first be determined to be kosher and in some cases, the scoop must be first washed clean. Any other products purchased, such as cones, toppings, milk or any other additives, must also be inspected to determine if it is kosher. Items such as cakes and novelty items may be coming in from another outside source, so special care must be taken when purchasing any of these items. Since one may not assume that there were no changes made since the last visit, this all must be done each time you go into the store to make a purchase!

Many shops may sell ice cream which is produced under the certification of the cRc or other reliable agencies, and have signs posted to indicate as such. However, unless the entire store is under certification, this letter only applies to the unopened ice cream that is listed on the letter of certification, and not necessarily the store itself. Merely asking the store attendant if an item is kosher is not sufficient, as they may not be aware of specific requirements that may affect the kosher status of an item. You must always see the actual product in its original container.

As the average person may also not always be aware of all of the kosher regulations, it is always preferable and recommended to only frequent shops under a reliable kosher supervision. Check with the cRc in the Chicago area, or your local Orthodox Vaad in other areas for the stores under kosher certification.

The following ice cream shops in the Chicago area are under the certification of the cRc. All items sold at these locations are cRc dairy. In most cases, items are Cholov Stam. Some locations may offer some Cholov Yisroel selections. Several cRc certified restaurants may also offer ice cream in their store.

Recall: Edaleen Tin Roof Sundae & Chocolate Peanut Butter Nut Ice Cream

Edaleen Dairy Recalls Tin Roof Sundae Ice Cream And Chocolate Peanut Butter Nut Ice Cream Because Of Possible Health Risk

[FDA] Edaleen Dairy located in Lynden, WA is recalling their Tin Roof Sundae and Chocolate Peanut Butter Nut Ice Cream in all sizes (1.75 quart carton, 1.5 gallon tub, 3 gallon tub), because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. This recall was a voluntary decision made by Edaleen Dairy and supported by the FDA.

The products were manufactured using peanuts/peanut products recalled by Peanut Corporation of American because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Tin Roof Sundae and Chocolate Peanut Butter Nut Ice Creams were sold distributors, stores, gas stations, scoop shops, etc. throughout Western Washington (Mostly in the Whatcom area). This product was also sold through the Edaleen Store located on 9593 Guide Meridian, Lynden, WA.

Tin Roof Sundae (UPC 14138 70005) and Chocolate Peanut Butter Nut (UPC 14138 70051) Ice creams were sold in 1.75 quart Cartons, 1.5 gallon tubs and 3 gallon tubs under the Edaleen’s Brand name. Products with dates of manufacture, found on the bottom of the carton, between October 1, 2007 and May 8, 2009 are affected by this recall.

No known illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this product/these products. The recall was initiated after it was determined that the peanut product received was manufactured by Peanut Corporation of America. The chocolate covered peanut product was bought by Edaleen Dairy from DOT Foods who are distributors of food ingredients. Edaleen Dairy has informed FDA of its actions and is fully cooperating with the Agency.

Customers that have bought the Tin Roof ice cream or the Chocolate Peanut Butter ice cream should return this product to the place where they bought it from. An exchange or refund can be done. Recall: Whole Cantaloupes from Wal-mart Stores in NC, SC and VA

L&M Companies, Inc. Recalls Whole Cantaloupes Because Of Possible Health Risk

[FDA] L&M Companies, Inc. of Raleigh, NC is recalling one lot of whole cantaloupes because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. No illnesses have been reported to date, and we are working with the FDA to inform consumers of this recall.

The whole cantaloupes were sold between May 10-15, 2009 in Walmart Supercenter Stores in North Carolina and South Carolina, and in the Walmart Supercenter Store located at 315 Furr Street in South Hill, Virginia. Consumers who have purchased whole cantaloupes from these Walmart stores during this time period should not consume them, and should destroy the product.

The recall comes after a cantaloupe at a small farm from which L&M Companies sources product tested positive for Salmonella. L&M Companies has ceased shipments from this farm, and the grower continues to investigate the cause of the problem.

Recall: Vanilla Tofutti Cuties

Tofutti Brands Inc. Announces Precautionary Recall of 12 Pallets of Vanilla Cuties Due to Possible Trace Level Milk Contamination

[FDA] Tofutti Brands Inc. has completed a precautionary investigative recall of 12 pallets of its 8-Pack Vanilla Cuties mini sandwich frozen dessert novelties (UPC 0-20188-01301-2) due to possible trace level milk contamination reported for a limited number of lots shipped which were produced in July of 2008. Vanilla Cuties are labeled as Milk Free and persons who have an allergy or severe sensitivity or intolerance to Dairy products run the risk of serious or life-threatening injury if they consume products with milk ingredients. Tofutti Brands uses stringent quality controls to prevent milk contamination of its products and sells more than 60 million individual Vanilla Cuties each year.

From early March to early April 2009 Tofutti Brands received telephone reports from 6 consumers who experienced skin rash symptoms after eating Vanilla Cuties produced at a minor production facility during 3 days in July of 2008. No illness or serious injury has been reported and no further reports have been received. The suspect product in question was identified as having been produced at only this one minor facility and the 12 pallets shipped from the suspect lots have been recalled. The bulk of these 12 pallets were recalled from the New York City metro area as well as from some distributed to the Midwest, New England, the Mid Atlantic Region and California. No complaints from consumers were received from the Midwest or New England Regions. Investigation and reports from Distributors and store visits indicate that none of the suspect product remains in distribution and it is not currently being offered for sale.

The suspect product in the above 12 pallets is identified by the labeled Manufacturing facility code 360-300 which will appear on one of the two end flaps of the box of the Vanilla Cuties. Product is kosher certified by the Kof-K. Consumers who may have purchased Vanilla Cuties bearing this code are urged to return them to the place of purchase for full refund. This recall does not involve any of the Company’s vanilla or other flavored Toffuti Cuties manufactured at its other facility. Kosher cheese goes upscale

[Baltimore Jewish Times] If anyone knows cheese, it’s Brigitte Mizrahi. She’s French. She grew up eating great cheese and, a dozen years ago, Mizrahi formed her own company to bring kosher cheese to America.

“Historically, kosher consumers are not big cheese eaters. We are trying to do the same thing the kosher wine industry did. We are trying to educate consumers that not everything has to taste like muenster cheese,” Mizrahi says from her office in New York.

Ms. Mizrahi’s company is called Anderson International Foods and it sells kosher cheese under two brands: Les Petites Fermieres (“The Little Farm Girl”) and Natural And Kosher. Both brands are sold in grocery stores throughout the United States.

Anderson International makes its own kosher cheeses and imports them as well. Northern California is the site for its plant, with its own rabbinic supervision. On the import side, goat cheese comes from Chile; brie and camembert from Canada.

The company’s tactic seems to be working. Since its founding, the market for kosher cheeses has grown, says Mizrahi. Consumers are requesting a wider variety of cheeses and more convenience, like zip-lock packaging.

She sees two distinct markets for her products. First, there’s the “everyday consumer,” who wants American cheese slices for sandwiches and shredded cheese for omelettes. Second, there are consumers who want “fancy” cheeses like Monterey jack and pepper jack or, in industry terms, an assortment of flavors in one cheese. Continue reading

Persimmons from Israel were grown during the shemittah year and are past the time of biur (the time one is allowed to purchase an item). According to many authorities, you cannot eat them, buy them, return them or do anything else with them other than let them rot and then throw them out. Check with your Rabbi.

Even After EU Vote, European Shechita Still in Danger

(IsraelNN.com) Despite the EU Parliament's vote Wednesday to legalize “shechita,” the Jewish method of humane animal slaughter is still very much in danger.

It was reported on Thursday that the European Jewish Community “hailed” the European Parliament’s vote to legalize the traditional Jewish method of slaughter into European law. However, it was later clarified that in fact, the Parliament only has consultative status in this case, and that the European Union’s Council of Agricultural Ministers will have the final say when it convenes next month. Our Friend, Jack Kemp

Former congressman and vice-presidential candidate Jack Kemp, who passed away last Erev Shabbat, was a faithful friend to Israel and the Jews.

He courageously fought on our behalf for shechita, and against anti-Semitism.

While he was publicly associated with many Jewish issues, Jack Kemp has not been heralded as the defender of the seminal practice of shechita. Until now, that is.

Rafael Medoff, director of the David S. Wyman Institute for Holocaust Studies, wrote a tribute article in the Jerusalem Post. He said,

"Jack Kemp will be widely remembered as a prominent voice of conservatism who shaped the tax-cut policies of the Reagan administration. But he also deserves to be remembered for his willingness to cross party lines to challenge a Republican administration on the issue of anti-Semitism.

Throughout his life, Kemp defied the old stereotype of conservatives who were indifferent to the concerns of racial or religious minorities. He played in important role in the creation of the US office for monitoring anti-Semitism.

Whether one agrees or disagrees with the positions he took on specific issues, Kemp will be remembered as a man of integrity, who would not allow partisan political considerations to interfere with his principles - including the principle of combating anti-Semitism."

And for that we owe him a debt of gratitude.

Recall: Market Pantry Chocolate Chip Chewy Granola Bars

Leclerc Foods has initiated a limited voluntary recall of a single lot of Market Pantry Chocolate Chip Chewy Granola Bar packages with UPC Code 85239 20124 and a “Best By” date of 18JAN2010.

The recall was initiated as a precautionary measure after it was discovered that product was mispackaged and the retail units may also contain Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Bars and S’more Bars. As a result the ingredient statement on the retail package does not include peanuts as an ingredient. People who have allergies to peanuts run the risk of serious or life threatening allergic reactions if they consume this product.

The wrappers of the individual bars within the retail package have correct variety name on it. However, out of an abundance of precaution, the mispackaged product is being recalled.

No illnesses or allergic reactions have been reported to date.

The product is available in 15.2 oz. boxes containing 18 bars per box and the date code is found printed in white on the right side of the box. The “Best By” date of 18JAN2010 is the only date code affected by the recall. The product is OK-D Kosher Certified. This product was distributed in Target stores in 35 states (AK, AL, CA, CO, CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, ID, IL, IN, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MT, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NV, NY, OH, OR, PA RI, SC, UT, VA, WA WI, WY).

No other Market Pantry products are involved in this recall.

The safety and quality of Leclerc Foods USA, Inc. products are of utmost importance to the company.

Consumers are advised not to consume these items and may return the items to Target for a refund or they may call Target Guest Relations at 1-800-316-6151.

Recall: Kleen-Pak Spinach

KLEEN-PAK FOODS of Milwaukee Wisconsin is recalling its 10 ounce and 1 pound packages of fresh spinach because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

The recalled spinach was distributed locally in retail stores and food wholesalers in Wisconsin, the Chicago area, and Minnesota. The product comes in 10 ounce and 1 pound packages marked with a use by date of 4/29, 4/30, and 5/01.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.

The potential for contamination was noted after routine testing by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection revealed the presence of Salmonella in some 1 pound packages of spinach.

The FDA and KLEEN-PAK continue their investigation as to the source of the problem.

Consumers who have purchased 10 ounce packages of curly leaf spinach are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-414-481-4878.
