Israel: If most hospital patients Jewish, food must be kosher

A bill stating that any licensed hospital with a majority of Jewish patients must serve kosher food passed its preliminary reading on Wednesday.

Twenty-four Knesset members voted in favor of the bill, with only one – Labor's Ophir Pines-Paz –opposing.

Knesset Member Zevulun Orlev (Habayit Hayehudi), who initiated the bill, said it was

"an inseparable part of the State of Israel's identification card as a Jewish state.

"Anyone who is admitted to a hospital in the State of Israel must be assured that he is eating kosher food, just as every soldier is served kosher food," he said.

The explanation to the bill notes that similar regulations have already been instated in drug treatment centers and the army.

Recall: 7.5oz cylinder-style packages of 49 Flavors Jelly Belly jelly beans

Jelly Belly Candy Company is recalling 7.5-ounce cylinder-style packages of 49 Flavors Jelly Belly jelly beans because the package is incorrectly labeled. The mislabeled packages failed to list peanut butter and peanut flour in the ingredient statement. People who have an allergy to peanuts or a severe sensitivity to peanuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these ingredients.

The Jelly Belly 49 Flavors cylinder packages were shipped to approximately 200 independent stores nationwide from September 29 to October 30, 2009. Product was packaged in a clear 7.5-ounce acetate cylinder with white label on the bottom of the package with lot codes 090925, 090928, 090929 or 091001. UPC code 071567989398

The recall was initiated after the company’s quality control efforts identified the incorrect ingredient statement. No illnesses or allergic reactions have been reported to date. No other candies or packaged candies from Jelly Belly are a part of this recall, and there is no health risk for consumers who are not allergic to peanuts.

Consumers who have a peanut allergy and purchased this product in the last five weeks are urged to return it to Jelly Belly Candy Company, One Jelly Belly Lane, Fairfield, Ca., 94533. Consumers and retailers with questions about the recall should call the Jelly Belly Hotline at 800-522-3267 Monday-Friday 7am to 5pm PST.

ASKOU Outreach Program to Visit Passaic-Clifton Community for Series of Kosher Lectures
Given the enormous success of the Harry H. Beren ASKOU OUTREACH program and its visits to yeshivot, kollelim and semicha programs, ASKOU Outreach is now expanding to major Jewish communities with its first post-Shabbat visits to the Passaic-Clifton community. According to Rabbi Yosef Grossman, OU Director of Kosher Education, the motto of the program is “Understand Kashrut as You’ve Never Understood it Before!”

Rabbi Grossman explained, “Before visiting Lakewood and Monsey, we solely concentrated on yeshivot, kollelim and semicha programs, such as Yeshiva Torah Vodaath, MTJ, Yeshiva University, Ohr HaChaim, Lander College for Men’s Kollel, etc. In Lakewood and Monsey, we discovered that our shiurim also attracted members of the general community, in addition to the local yeshivot such as BMG in Lakewood and Ohr Somayach in Monsey. As a result, we are now broadening our target service group to communities as well. We have already received a very warm welcome in the Passaic – Clifton community through our contacts with the local rabbis and lay leaders.”

Recall: Great Value/Kroger Half & Half and Heavy Whipping Cream

Morningstar Foods is voluntarily recalling 32-ounce Great Value Half & Half; 32-ounce Great Value 36% Heavy Whipping Cream; 32-ounce Kroger brand 36% Heavy Whipping Cream; and 64-ounce Wholesome Farms Chocolate Ice Cream Mix because these products may contain soy protein.

The affected product was distributed to retail outlets in the following states: Alabama, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin. Recall: Breyers® All Natural Cookies & Cream Ice Cream

Unilever United States, Inc., of Englewood Cliffs, NJ, in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), is voluntarily recalling a limited number of tubs of Breyers® ice cream because it was mispackaged and may contain undeclared wheat. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to wheat run the risk of allergic reaction if they consume this product.

On a limited number of tubs, the lid describes the product as "Breyers® All Natural Cookies & Cream" ice cream, and the tub portion of the package describes the product as "Breyers® All Natural Mint Chocolate Chip" ice cream. The product inside of the tub is "All Natural Cookies & Cream." The ingredient statement on the tub does not declare wheat, which is an ingredient of the Cookies & Cream product. The mispackaged ice cream product was distributed in Alabama, Arizona, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Trinidad and Virginia through retail stores in these locations and adjoining areas. The affected product is being recalled from consumers and retailer store shelves, back rooms and warehouses.

The affected mispackaged product was distributed in 1.5-quart (1.41L) paperboard tubs marked with UPC # 077567254245 located on the side of the tub and in combination with "Best If Used By" dates of FEB1711GH, FEB1811GH and FEB1911GH located on the bottom of the tub.

The allergy alert and recall relates only to the above mentioned mispackaged Breyers® ice cream. No other Breyers® ice cream products are affected.

No adverse reactions have been reported to date. In addition to working in cooperation with the FDA, the company is also issuing an alert through the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network.

The recall was initiated after the company received a few consumer complaints about the mispackaged product. It was determined that product containing wheat was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of wheat in the ingredient list on the tub.

Consumers who have purchased the mispackaged Breyers® ice cream with UPC # 077567254245 and in combination with "Best If Used By" dates of FEB1711GH, FEB1811GH and FEB1911GH are urged to discard it immediately and contact the company at 1-877-270-7402 for a full refund. Inside The Business Of Kosher

With higher-than-expected kosher food sales for the Jewish holidays, an uptick in kosher organic and the introduction of 5,000 new kosher products this year, the multibillion-dollar kosher industry appears thriving. This week, 7,000 people flocked to Secaucus, N.J., for the 21st annual Kosherfest trade show.
Kosherfest’s founder, Menachem Lubinsky, is president and CEO of Lubicom Marketing Consulting, which specializes in marketing to the Jewish and other niche communities and touts itself as the “pioneer firm of the kosher marketing community.” Lubinsky’s who edits the trade magazine Kosher Today, spoke to The Jewish Week about the industry.

Q: What explains the kosher industry’s success in the midst of a recession?
A: The base community [of kosher consumers] continues to grow. The retailers in [heavily Orthodox] areas like Borough Park, Flatbush, Lakewood and Monsey all say they are doing larger sales because more young families are coming in and families are getting larger.

Kosherfest displayed 500 new items this year (including Luck Chen microwaveable Asian noodles, “Best In Show” winner of the best new product competition). At this point, an estimated 40 percent of supermarket products are kosher and gross annual sales of kosher products is over $200 billion, with sales of kosher ingredients now more than $325 billion.

What exactly are “ingredients,” and why is this such a growth area?
You have ingredient companies all over the world that produce flavorings, oils, everything that goes into a food product. If you want to sell an ingredient product in the U.S., you can’t sell it if it’s not kosher. Kellogg’s, Dannon and Coke aren’t going to buy it.

What are the major countries where kosher supervisors have now set up shop?
China is huge. You have upward of 2,000 companies that produce kosher items.

Is the kosher certification business profitable?
All the supervising agencies, the large ones I know are all not for profit. The Orthodox Union [The Largest certification agency] is not-for-profit, and proceeds from kashrus fund a good deal of the programs of the OU. Is it profitable? Big time, but they use it to fund all their other projects.

How much money do you think the OU brings in from certifying kosher products? I’ve asked them a few times and no one ever tells me. That’s probably as secret as the ingredients of Coca Cola.

What’s been the Pomegranate effect?
When this upscale kosher supermarket opened in Brooklyn last year, many people predicted it would put its rivals out of business. They have definitely taken share away from a number of competitors in different areas, but not enough so that any are on the verge of collapse.

Has the kosher meat market stabilized since last year, when meat-processing giant AgriProcessors was forced to close (due to an array of criminal charges)?
Yes, but it’s different. Before, Agri was supplying almost every large and small market. Today, those tiny markets are either out of the picture or have sporadic supply.

New Badatz Toronto & the Kashruth Council of Canada (COR)

Badatz Toronto – a new local kashruth supervisory council founded by rabbis Amram Assayag and Moshe Bensalmon – opened for business in May 2008 and is currently responsible for the kashruth of five establishments and nine companies in the GTA.

Until now, this major metropolitan area has had to rely solely on the Kashruth Council of Canada, which has been in existence for more than 50 years and is recognized worldwide. More than 900 facilities and 45,000 products carry the council’s ‘COR’ certification symbol.

In New York City and the surrounding boroughs many companies vie for supervision of products and facilities for kosher clientele. For quite some time there has been growing debate in the Toronto community as to whether it would benefit from a similar situation or whether it would be better to allow one organization to maintain control of the kashruth situation.

Rabbis Assayag and Bensalmon have both been involved with kashruth supervision for more than 20 years. Rabbi Assayag is the chief Sephardic rabbi of Toronto and spiritual leader of Kehilat Abir Yaakov, the Sephardic Kehila Centre.

According to the Badatz web site, under Rabbi Assayag’s leadership the company “has formulated strict halachic policies that comply with industry standards” and is “positioned to offer kashruth at affordable and competitive rates.”

Hamizrach Glatt Kosher Restaurant and Banquet Hall at Bathurst and Steeles opened its doors in August. Serving delicious Middle Eastern cuisine, it has quickly become one of the most popular kosher eateries in the city. It is under the supervision of Rabbi Yakov Yecheskia Sofer, head of Vaad Hakashruth Adas Yisroel, in conjunction with Rabbi Dovid Schochet, rabbi of the Chabad Lubavitch community of Ontario, and the Badatz’s Rabbi Assayag.

Royal Kosher Affair Catering at La Primavera Banquet Hall in Vaughan is under Badatz supervision and lately has become a preferred choice for celebrations, Mati Bensalmon, an entrepreneur and spokesperson for Badatz, told the Jewish Tribune. “It’s always better for the consumer when there’s competition and choice,” he said.

No one at the COR offices was prepared to comment.

While you might think that we are after all dealing with the familiar, this year’s roster of winners shows just how much can be done to enhance the familiar and make it an attractive option at point of purchase. Luck Chen’s noodles are not like the traditional lugshen (noodles) in that they have great texture and you can conveniently warm them in a microwave or in warm water. Sarah's Tent Potato Borekas that maintain the flaky crust but also adds the potatoes. Osem’s Bamba is not just Bamba anymore. Its Peanut Snack now comes with Hazelnut Cream Filling. And how about Get Healthy America's Lasagna Florentine.

The point is that we used to think of new products as being totally new, in name and content. In recent years, we’ve learned to appreciate the customer’s desire for variety. The same product with a different flavor, enhancing a product by adding another (i.e. a chocolate dipped pretzel), and combining tastes (i.e. the many new flavors and toppings of frozen pizza). We used to think that the customer was resistant to change, particularly when it comes to food and that tampering with the original was a prescription for disaster. We have since learned that consumers love it to the point where product enhancement has become a significant trigger for profits for many companies, particularly in the kosher food industry.
This year’s winners deserve more than the awards that they will receive at Kosherfest. They should be complimented for understanding the mindset of today’s shopper and the quest for the different, the exotic, and, of course, the more wholesome, natural, and healthier products. Pomegranates and other fresh produce from Israel are available in South Africa. Grains, fruits and vegetables (and their extracts) that grow in the Halachic boundaries of Eretz Yisrael are subject to many extra Kashrut laws due to the Kedusha (holiness) of the land.

These include:

The requirement to separate Terumah (the Priestly tithe) and the various forms of Maaser (tithes for the Levites, the poor, and the portion that was to be eaten in Jerusalem in Temple times).

Shmita (produce of the Sabbatical year)

A stricter form of Orla (produce of a tree within its 1st 3 years).

Processed foods from Israel with a reliable Hechsher will certify that all these Halachic issues have been taken care of.

Israeli tomatoes are usually locally grown, as are English cucumbers. Check the label.

The Chief Rabbi, the Beth Din and the Union of Orthodox Synagogues of South Africa are supportive of the community’s extreme concern over the high prices of kosher meat and chicken and will be setting up an independent commission to investigate the situation.

The commission will be established as soon as possible and will include relevant experts. The community will be notified as soon as they have accepted their appointments and the mandate and terms of reference of the commission have been drawn up. The above bodies undertake to report back to our community at the conclusion of the process.

The South African Jewish community is privileged to have one of the most reputable and well run Kashrut infrastructures in the world. We are determined to maintain our high standards, and at the same time to make keeping kosher as affordable to our community as possible.

Living Foods Inc. voluntary recalls alfalfa sprouts

Out of an abundance of caution, Living Foods Inc. of Ionia, Michigan, is initiating a voluntary market withdrawal of alfalfa sprouts in response to a Salmonella Typhimurium investigation being conducted by the Michigan departments of Community Health and Agriculture. To date, 12 cases of salmonella in Michigan between August 17 and September 18, 2009, have been associated with this outbreak strain.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The sprouts were distributed to retail and food service facilities through wholesale produce suppliers in Michigan.

The following list of sprouts are sold under the Living Foods label with a sell by date of October 22 or earlier: alfalfa sprouts, 5 lb. box; 1 lb. bag; 4 oz. bag; 4 oz. cup; spicy sprouts, 4 oz. cup; 7 sprout, 4 oz. cup; alfalfa/onion, 4 oz. cup; and alfalfa/garlic, 4 oz. cups.

Living Foods is working closely with state officials to determine the exact cause of this problem. To date, neither Living Foods nor state officials have any laboratory test data linking the sprouts to the illnesses or to the microorganism.

Living Foods follows all FDA guidelines including seed sanitization and microbial testing on every growing container.

If consumers have any sprouts in their possession, they should be discarded. Wholesale-retailers should remove the product from sale and cease distribution. Questions should be directed to the company at 616-527-0911.

Fourth Annual Simply Manischewitz Cook-Off

Now in it's fourth year, the Simply Manischewitz Cook-Off is a fun and entertaining recipe contest. Create an original kosher entree or soup recipe that uses Manischewitz Ready-to-Serve Broth. The recipe must be prepared in one hour or less. Kosher Atlanta Updates

From the Atlanta Kashruth Commission (AKC):

All AKC caterers will occasionally cater an event under the supervision of another synagogue or do a drop-off. The only way to make sure an off-premise event is under AKC supervision, is to check with the AKC office or locate the AKC mashgiach at the event and confirm. (Merely going by a caterer's name does not guarantee that all the food is supervised.)

Broadway Café is offering a new FREQUENT DINERS' CLUB discount.

All products made in The Dairy Side of Goodfriend Catering of MJCCA are cholov yisroel. Pre-packaged ice cream and cream cheese are not. 678-812-3994. The dairy kitchen of the MJCCA produces meals for the MJCCA pre-schools and the Weinstein Center which are regular kosher dairy.

Kroger Toco Hills is selling Shabbos in a Bag with the option of 3 packages and many choices of chicken, side dishes, kugels and challah for either $19.99 or $24.99. Call 404-633-8694 for details.

Whole Foods now has OU Kosher Valley All Natural Poultry -- without antibiotics or added hormones. 404-634-7800.

The Westin Buckhead (formerly the Swissotel) is no longer offering kosher catering. The Westin Atlanta North at Perimeter is continuing its kosher catering.

Jerusalem Bakery and Deli in Marietta is not a kosher facility.

Any 100% pure honey without added flavors is acceptable even without a hechsher. Clover honey (honey that the bees have processed from the nectar of the clover leaf) and orange honey (which is processed from orange groves) are acceptable as long as no flavors are added. Beware: royal jelly is not kosher.

Ice Cream Shops
Recently we have received queries about several ice cream stores that are not supervised. Some of these unsupervised stores will put a letter on the wall from a national agency, which seems to imply that the store is supervised. In reality, the letter refers only to a specific product found in the store. THERE ARE NO NATIONALLY SUPERVISED ICE CREAM STORES IN THE ATLANTA AREA. Caution is recommended.

There are 2 kinds of ice cream stores that have kosher ice cream products: supervised stores and non-supervised stores. It is always preferable and recommended to frequent stores that are supervised.

There are 6 supervised ice cream stores in Atlanta. In Rita's Ices (2550 Sandy Plains Road, suite 120), Carvel (2482 Jett Ferry Road, ste. 685) and Whole Foods Gelato (2111 Briarcliff Road) all products are certified under the AKC supervision. In Bruster's (2095 LaVista Road and 226 Johnson Ferry Road) and TCBY in Loehmann's Plaza (2484 Briarcliff Road) one should check the kosher letter to see which items and toppings are kosher.

Non-supervised ice cream stores are likely to have non-kosher items in their facilities. If one desires to buy something, he should be his own mashgiach and check each product he wishes to eat to ensure it is kosher. He should ask to see the original container to verify that it has a reliable hechsher. Sometimes the hechsher is on the lid. He must also make sure that the kosher products are not coming in contact with any non-kosher products. For example, he would need to make sure that the scoop is clean for his ice cream, and that the blender is totally clean. Cakes and other products baked on-site in these facilities are not recommended. Sometimes a facility can use a kosher chocolate sauce but heat it up in a non-kosher microwave. Sometimes a facility will run out of their regular toppings or mixes and replace them with items that do not have a hechsher.

STAR-K will hold a for-women-only program to enhance kashrus awareness scheduled for November 2-3 in the agency’s Baltimore offices. The seminar will feature the following topics: determining acceptability of products; understanding the dynamics of kashrus in America; setting up a kosher kitchen; shul kitchen guidelines; effective vegetable checking for infestation; and challenges in the workplace, including establishing respect in the kitchen.

The program’s sessions will be led by Star-K’s Rabbinic Administrator, Rabbi Moshe Heinemann in addition to Star-K President, Dr. Avrom Pollak and STAR-K Kashrus Administrators. Field visits to a restaurant, bakery, and hotel will complete this unique experience.

Appliance Alert: Freezers
Before buying a freezer, be sure to determine that there is no door alarm or digital temperature display. More & more freezers have this technology. If you do purchase such a freezer, be certain that the alarm and displays can be deactivated, so that you can use the freezer on Shabbos & YomTov.

Shmitta Alert
We have been informed that area fruit and vegetable stores are now selling cucumbers from Israel. There is presently no problem with Shmitta on fresh cucumbers. However, if the produce is not under a reliable hashgacha, one is still required to take Teruma and Maaser. Israeli produce is usually identifi ed by a sign or sticker on the fruit and/or vegetable. Consumers should always be careful when buying any produce and should follow through with the proper procedures when purchasing produce from Israel.

Kashrus bulletin from the cRc

From the Chicago Rabbinical Council (cRc):

Consumers should be aware that Pearl Barley may have an unusually high level of insect infestation this time of year, even from newly opened sealed packages. This is primarily due to the hot and humid weather over the last several months, prime living conditions for these insects. One should be diligent in inspecting barley year-round, but especially through November.

The CRC has recently issued a Kashrus bulletin warning about infestation problems in raspberry products. After intensive research and checking of products under their supervision, they concluded that the following items must be recalled:
U.S. Chocolate (commercial) Raspberry Cookie Filling, Raspberry Topping, Raspberry Seedless and Seeded Jam
Nature's Finest Raspberry Jam
The only exception is H.R. Ovenproof Jam. They added that from this point onward, all raspberry products under the CRC will be produced only with filtered raspberry juice instead of puree.

Some packaging of Lifeway Peach Kefir does not have the cRc on the label. This was an error, and the product is indeed kosher dairy cholov stam.

Please be aware that the ‘Nuts To You’ retail store located at 779 S. Buffalo Grove Road, Buffalo Grove, Illinois, is not under cRc certification. Only the factory sealed packages bearing the cRc on the label are to be considered kosher certified by the cRc. Product contained in open bins at this location, as well as any non-kosher certified facility, are not to be considered under cRc certification, even when bearing a cRc sign on the bin.

Certain packages of Jewel brand Dixie Cup Ice Cream contain a cRc logo on the outer bag and a “Shield K” on the lids of the individual cups. The lids with the “Shield K” were used inadvertently. This product is indeed under the strict certification of the cRc and is dairy - cholov stam when bearing the cRc logo on the bag or the individual cups.

Certain locations of Red Mango stores, including Chicago and Evanston, have implied that their store is certified by the cRc. Please be aware that the cRc does not presently certify any Red Mango stores.

Recall: Nosher's Choice brand Just Fruit

Americas Favorite Noshers Inc. Issues Alert on Undeclared Sulfites in Noshers Choice Brand Just Fruit

Americas Favorite Noshers Inc. of Brooklyn, New York 11205 is recalling Nosher's Choice brand Just Fruit because it contained undeclared sulfites. Consumers who have severe sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume this product.

Nosher's Choice brand Just Fruit is sold in a 9 ounce clear plastic container and has a code date prior to 09/17/10 printed on the label and does not list sulfur dioxide in the ingredients. The recalled product was distributed throughout New York and New Jersey. The recalled product is a product of the United States.

The recall was initiated after routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and markets food inspectors and subsequent analysis by food laboratory personnel revealed the presence of sulfites in Nosher's Choice brand Just Fruit which were not declared on the label. The consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reactions in some asthmatics, anaphylactic shock could occur in certain sulfite sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more of suflites.

No illnesses or allergic reactions involving this product have been reported to date. Consumers who have purchased Nosher's Choice brand Just Fruit are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at (718) 403-0020.

Mendel's Meat Restaurant (formerly Mendy's) located in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, is no longer certified by the Vaad HaKashruth of Buffalo (BVK).

From Cleveland Kosher:

Empire Bagel Shop in Cleveland is now called "Bagel Shoppe" and has moved to 1982 Warrensville Center Road, South Euclid, OH. The phone number is the same. It is still Yoshon under the hashgocho of Cleveland Kosher.

From the Montreal Vaad Hair (MK):

As of Monday, 21 September, 2009, Chez Benny, 2075 St. Louis, Ville St. Laurent, will be under new management and will no longer bear MK kosher certification.

Kish Catering is no longer under MK kosher certification.

Creamy Maple Spread, under the brand Grenache, is erroneously marked "Pareve" and is indeed "Dairy".
