Recall: Haifa Smoked Fish Whole Schmaltz Herring

Haifa Smoked Fish, located in Queens, New York, is recalling Haifa brand vacuum packaged Whole Schmaltz Herring with the lot number 20, because the product was found to be uneviscerated.

The lot being recalled is a product of Norway, individually vacuum-packed in clear plastic pouches with lot # 20 indicated on the label and distributed through various food retailers in the NY and NJ area.

The Whole Schmaltz Herring was sampled by a New York State Agriculture and Markets Food Inspector during a routine inspection. Subsequent analysis of the product by New York State Food Laboratory personnel confirmed that Whole Schmaltz Herring was not properly eviscerated prior to processing.

The sale of uneviscerated fish is prohibited under New York State Agriculture and Markets regulations because of Clostridium Botulinum spores are more likely to be concentrated in the viscera than any other portion of the fish. Uneviscerated fish has been linked to outbreaks of botulism poisoning.

Botulism is a serious and potentially fatal form of food poisoning, causes the following symptoms: general weakness, dizziness, double-vision and trouble with speaking or swallowing. Difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation may also be common symptoms. People experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical attention.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.

Consumers are warned not to use the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled and should return it to the place of purchase.

News from the OU and Seattle Vaad

From the Va'ad HaRabanim of Greater Seattle:

The "Entry Restricted" signs at the Kline Galland Building are down. Kids are now allowed back in to the building. KGC is still limiting all visitors, childrens, families and staff with any kind of flu symptoms to keep the resident safe and healthy. The front office staff will briefly screen all visitors upon their arrival.

Clementines from Israel are showing up in produce stores across the country. If you purchase produce from Israel it needs to be properly tithed (ma'aser and trumah). For questions consult your local Rabbi.

Because of a printing error traif lamb under the Wild Harvest brand was distributed to Albertson's with an unauthorized OU. This product probably is not in the kosher section, but is in the marketplace. The Albertson's in Mercer Island has been checked out and will be monitored. Since this situation was just discovered recently, it is not known whether this is a Washington State problem or a local one. Anyone seeing this product at any store should contact me at 908-307-9163. I will forward the info to the OU office.

Teapot Redmond is now under Va'ad Certification.

Fidalgo Bay Coffee is certified Kosher by the Seattle Va'ad. Their coffee can be found at PCC.

How kosher wine is being produced and why it tastes better than any other wines on the market

Is keeping kosher keeping you from being the wine enthusiast that you really are, deep down inside? Well, if it does, you probably live in the Dark Ages or still stuck in the 80's (although is practically the same...) because kosher wine is not what it used to be, not anymore.

I mean, seriously, have you tried to taste the lovely Tishbi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, straight from the luxurious Gush Etzion Vineyard? Yup, ranks high up there with the big guys. Or what about Barkan's classic Petite Syrah, or the lovely Merlot? You know, Barkan winery has been around for 100 years. They make wines since the late 1890s. That long!

Okay, alright, it's true that when people think of kosher food they think of matzo ball soup and when they think of kosher wine they think about a reddish dark liquid substance, that tastes sweet and funny and maybe have grapes in it, but definitely has nothing to do with wine. But this doesn't mean that things are really like that out there. A lot of stuff happened since Manischewitz you know?

First, there are tons of new and exciting Israeli boutique wineries that produce magnificent kosher wines that are actually quite acclaimed all over the world. These guys win prizes and score high rankings at the best, world-class competitions, where good wine is highly appreciated. But don't take any Israeli wine to be kosher, oh no! There's are actually some strict rules regarding kosher wine making and some wineries cannot handle all the responsibility.

You see, it takes more than just a Rabbi to come over and make a wine kosher. A lot more than that. Kosher wine begins in the ground. In the fields. According to Jewish law, wine makers must not produce wine from new vines, until the fourth year. And then, every seventh year the grape fields should be left untouched, and can be of no use whatsoever.

After that, you have to make sure that all of your equipment is kosher. That goes for the tools and barrels and all the facilities of a winery. Want more rules? Oh I got more!

- Only religious Jewish males are allowed to take part in the wine production.

- No animal products can be used in the wine making process.

- A small percentage of the wine must be discarded.

- Wine barrels must be cleaned and cleaned again. Three times actually.

So how can you now if your wine is kosher? Well, a pick at the label will sure do. Or you can head on to your local kosher wine shop, many available online, and indulge your senses in a the best of the best. Wines are produced kosher all around the world these days. So don't be surprised to find kosher wines from Chile, Spain, France, New Zealand, South Africa and any other wine making empires. All you have to do is open up, and enjoy the taste of kosher wines, the taste of a true, long lasting tradition.

Kosher Dairy Miami does not give supervision to any Dolce Vita Gelato store. They sell gelato that is manufactured under Kosher Diary Miami supervision, but the product is certified only in its original sealed packaging. We have received reports that some of the advertisements for the Sunny Isles store may have been misleading, and people may think that the store is under KDM supervision. Corrective actions are being taken to ensure that all future advertisements are clear and not misleading.

Mana Fine Foods has recently been added to the list of establishments certified by Kosher Miami, The Vaad HaKashrus of Miami-Dade. Mana is located at 1077 95th Street in Bay Harbor. Chai Lifeline/Chop Celebrate Opening Of Kosher Pantry

The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia celebrated the opening of its Kosher Pantry with a ribbon-cutting ceremony today. Located adjacent to Children’s Hospital’s main cafeteria, the Kosher Pantry is a specifically designated room where families who keep kosher can store, prepare and eat their food, relax, and pray. The pantry features an array of sefarim, books, DVDs and other practical items that a family stuck in the hospital may need and will serve as a great resource for the hundreds of Jewish families who visit CHOP each year. In addition, Children’s Hospital now offers a new line of kosher food options from Brooklyn-based Tuv Taam, available for purchase by patients and families at various locations throughout the hospital.

This great achievement comes as a culmination of years of advocacy and countless cultural-diversity trainings done by Rabbi Sruli Fried, MSW, Chai Lifeline New Jersey’s regional director in conjunction with Dr. Noel Rosales.

Dr. Steven M. Altschuler, MD, president and chief executive office of CHOP began the ceremony with opening remarks. He was followed by Dr. Noel Rosales, director of the Cultural Awareness Initiative at CHOP. Rabbi Sruli Fried then spoke, thanking the CHOP staff for their dedication and culturally-sensitive care towards Jewish families over the years. Lastly, a Chai Lifeline parent and member of CHOP’s family advisory council shared her moving story.

In its quest to make hospital stays as comfortable and convenient as possible for families, Chai Lifeline provides many hospital-based services including a daily shuttle to and from CHOP, respite in the hospital and the availability of the Chai House. The opening of the pantry is a remarkable breakthrough for not only Chai Lifeline but also for the many families being treated at CHOP.

The kosher bakery at Kroger Toco Hills has moved. The area where the old kosher bakery was, is now the non-kosher bakery. If you have any bakery questions, please see the AKC mashgiacha in charge, Ms. Judy Kenworthy. Please make sure to check that all products purchased have a kosher AKC sticker.

Trader Joe's no longer carries as wide of a variety of certified bagged pre-washed lettuces as they have in the past. Trader Joe's meats with a triangle K are not considered reliably kosher. If one used it, one may need to re-kasher equipment used. Check with your rabbi.

Wines from Israel from 2008 have special requirements for shemitah-year wine.They have been spotted in the Atlanta market. Check with your rabbi.

Kraft Philadelphia Cream Cheese has a new flavor, Spinach Artichoke, which is not kosher. (There is no kosher symbol on the label.)

Uncle Ben's Hearty Soup Broccoli Cheese & Rice bears an unauthorized OU-D symbol and is not kosher.

Tootsie Roll Frooties, soft chewy candy like Tootsie Rolls in fruit flavors, are kosher dairy approved even without the OU-D on the packaging.

The Dairy Window at Goodfriend's Grill at the MJCCA will no longer be an exclusive cholov Yisroel establishment.

Bruster's on Johnson Ferry Road had initially thought to discontinue their kosher supervision. They changed their mind because individuals who appreciate their supervision communicated with the store owner and requested that they continue to have the establishment certified. The store has, therefore, renewed their kosher supervision for 2010. Consumer calls do make a difference!

Due to the presence of non fat milk solids detected in the above batches, we are voluntarily withdrawing these batches of Dark Divine Chocolate. The labelling on the product states that it may contain traces of milk, but we wanted to take action to alert customers who are allergic or intolerant to dairy products.

No other Divine Chocolate products are affected.

Customers can return any chocolate from these batches to the store where it was purchased where a full refund will be given.

The Perfect Hummus Recipe

I've been searching for the perfect hummus recipe for a long time. I've tried using dried chickpeas and canned chickpeas. I've tried olive oil, no olive oil. FINALLY, I think I've found the perfect recipe. Well, at least for me. It's from a recipe I found online, then tweaked to make my own. This hummus turns out so smooth and creamy. Even better than store-bought.

There are two techniques that make it extra smooth and creamy. First, the liquids must be combined with the tahini and whipped until smooth. I do this in my food processor or blender. The blender works better than the food processor in my opinion.

Second, the chickpeas must have the "skins" removed. This is a bit tedious, but it really makes the hummus incredibly creamy. Just rub the chickpeas together and they will shed their skins. If you are using dried peas, you must cook them first. I've found that dried or canned work equally well. I really don't have a preference.

So here is the recipe...I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

15 ounces cooked or canned chickpeas
1/3 cup Joyva sesame tahini
1/3 cup water
3 Tablespoons lemon juice
2 small cloves garlic or 1 large
2 pinches salt

Put the tahini, garlic, salt, water and lemon juice in blender or food processor. Blend on high until smooth. Add chickpeas 1/4 cup at a time and blend until smooth and creamy. I sometimes eat this plain, sometimes I add one or more of the following:
sesame seeds, pine nuts, olive oil, paprika, cumin.

Rabbi Binyomin Gruber visits with Vaad Harabbonim of Montreal
The well-known Baal Hamachshir, Rabbi Binyomin Gruber from New York, visited Montreal Wednesday December 23rd and joined the Vaad Harabbonim for their weekly meeting. Many topics were discussed including the Kashrus of Kosher fish, production of baked products, Shechita, and many other common issues. Rabbi Gruber gave over his expertise and shared his experiences with the Vaad Harabbonim as to the certification of Kosher fish products and the controls used therein.

On being questioned about his meeting with the Vaad Harabbonim, Rabbi Gruber mentioned the uniqueness of the Montreal community where representatives of the entire community meet together to discuss issues of common interest, which in turn, benefits the entire community of Montreal. “This is something not common,” said Rabbi Gruber, “and it is great to have such an asset.”

Terumos and Maasros: Fresh peppers from Israel have been found at the local (Baltimore, MD) Giant supermarket. Consumers should always be aware that when buying any produce from Israel, terumos and maasros must be taken from the produce (Shmitta is no longer an issue with this vegetable). Israeli produce is usually identified by a sign or sticker on the fruit or vegetable.

Trader Joe’s is selling glatt kosher meat under the EKB (Empire Kosher Beef) label, certified by the Star-K. This is not to be confused with Trader Joe’s own brand of non-glatt kosher meat. When purchasing meat at Trader Joe’s, consumers are advised to ensure that the label on the meat reflects the EKB brand.

In January 2009 we released the following alert:
Packages of the following Celestial Seasonings Teas - English Toffee and Decaf Vanilla Maple printed for Canada, with French, were labeled incorrectly as pareve with the Star-K hechsher. The products are actually certified by the Scroll-K and are dairy (cholov stam).
All unused packaging had been destroyed when the error was discovered. Packages already in the distribution system have reached the United States. Please be aware of this when purchasing Celestial Seasonings brand English Toffee and Decaf Vanilla Maple with French on the label.

New Yorker Bakery bread products, produced exclusively at 9443 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20910, are under the supervision
of the Star-K only when bearing the Star-K Pareve label. Please note: Star-K’s supervision is limited to the wholesale division of the New Yorker Bakery facility, as mentioned above, and does not include any retail outlets of the New Yorker Bakery, either under its name or the brand name Breads Unlimited.

My-T Fine Pudding Chocolate Pudding is OK pareve, even when listing “contains dairy” in the ingredient panel. The product has been reformulated, however, the ingredient statement was not corrected.

Moore Bakery Company, Baltimore, MD, offering a selection of rich chocolate mousse cakes and many flavors of luscious buttercreme cakes, is now Star-K certified Pareve, Pas Yisroel and Yoshon.

RITA’S ICES, located at the Reisterstown Road Plaza, 6796 Reisterstown Road, Baltimore, MD 21215, has decided to discontinue its Star-D* Kosher Certification at this time.

Due to the inability to continue sourcing a Kosher Fish Oil powder at this time, Shaklee Corp. has introduced a non-Kosher version of Mighty Smart DHA Dietary Supplement. The non-kosher product will be SKU #20076 and will not bear the Star-K symbol. Kosher Mighty Smart is no longer being produced at this time, but is still available from Shaklee distributors. Only Mighty Smart DHA Dietary Supplement Chews SKU #20058 when bearing the Star-K symbol is Kosher certified (Pareve/Dagim).

* The Star-D is the kashrus symbol of the National Council of Young Israel (NCYI). The Star-K, in its relationship with the NCYI, administers the kashrus of the Star-D. All Star-D products are dairy - cholov stam (non-cholov yisroel).

McNeil Consumer Healthcare, Division of McNEIL-PPC, Inc., is voluntarily recalling certain lots of OTC products in the Americas, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Fiji. The company is initiating this recall following an investigation of consumer reports of an unusual moldy, musty, or mildew-like odor that, in a small number of cases, was associated with temporary and non-serious gastrointestinal events. These include nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, or diarrhea. This precautionary action is voluntary and has been taken in consultation with the FDA.

Based on this investigation, McNeil Consumer Healthcare has determined that the reported uncharacteristic smell is caused by the presence of trace amounts of a chemical called 2,4,6-tribromoanisole (TBA). This can result from the breakdown of a chemical that is sometimes applied to wood that is used to build wood pallets that transport and store product packaging materials. The health effects of this chemical have not been well studied but no serious events have been documented in the medical literature. A small number of the product lots being recalled were associated with the complaints of an unusual moldy, musty, or mildew-like odor, and some of these lots were found to contain trace amounts of TBA. In December 2009, McNeil Consumer Healthcare also recalled all lots of TYLENOL® Arthritis Pain 100 count with EZ-OPEN CAP related to this issue. McNeil Consumer Healthcare has now applied broader criteria to identify and remove all product lots that it believes may have the potential to be affected, even if they have not been the subject of consumer complaints.

In addition to the product recall, McNeil Consumer Healthcare is continuing their investigation into this issue and is taking further actions that include ceasing shipment of products produced using materials shipped on these wood pallets and requiring suppliers who ship materials to our plants to discontinue the use of these pallets. We will continue to closely monitor and evaluate the situation and consult with the FDA.

Consumers who purchased product from the lots included in this recall should stop using the product and contact McNeil Consumer Healthcare for instructions on a refund or replacement. For these instructions or information regarding how to return or dispose of the product, consumers should log on to the internet at www.mcneilproductrecall.com or call 1-888-222-6036 (Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Eastern Time, and Saturday-Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Time). Checkers Balfour Park - Statement from Shoprite
Subsequent to the advertising of a kosher butchery, bakery, deli and fish shop at Checkers Balfour Park, the Shoprite Group's Corporate Marketing Director, Brian Weyers, said that the supermarket group regrets any wrong impression and the recent confusion created by point of sale material displayed in the store.

The Beth Din had originally approved the above service departments as kosher, subject to certain conditions being met and standards maintained, all of which were agreed to by the Shoprite group. Subsequently, however, the supermarket group felt unable to meet these conditions and mistakenly assumed that we could operate as "kosher style", without Beth Din supervision. Regrettably this decision did not take into account the sensitivities and high standards of kashrut to which the Johannesburg Jewish Community is accustomed.

Weyers said that following confusion with regard to the kosher status of these service departments - a situation for which the Beth Din is not to blame in any way - all relevant point of sale material had been removed until further notice. Consumers who had purchased items under the erroneous impression that they were Beth Din certified, were offered a full refund.

The supermarket is in the process of reapplying to the Beth Din for certification of the butchery and deli. The bakery and fish shop will remain unkosher for the time being.

"We extend our apology to the Beth Din and Johannesburg kosher consumers, and we look forward to once again providing kosher certified products to the Jewish community", said Weyers.

Robots, Kashrus, and Strawberries

Is there a technological solution for strawberries around the corner?

We have all heard the Kashrus guidelines on fresh strawberries, and no one enjoys doing it. R.I.A.R is the acronym â€“ Remove, Immerse, Agitate, Rinse. (You know, Remove the green leaves, being careful not to cut deeply to avoid making hole in the top of the strawberry. Immerse the strawberries for a few minutes in cold water containing some concentrated unscented dishwashing liquid (such as Ultra Dawn or Ultra Joy). Agitate the strawberries for a few seconds in the soapy water. Rinse each strawberry carefully and meticulously under a stream of cold running water. Run your fingers down the entire surface of the strawberry while rinsing.) There just might be Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University's National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC) have developed a plant-sorting machine that uses computer vision and machine learning to inspect and grade harvested strawberry plants and then mechanically sort them by quality -- tasks that until now could only be done manually. It could possibly be used for Kashrus purposes too.

In a successful field test this fall, the machine classified and sorted harvested plants more consistently and faster than workers could, with a comparable error rate.

"We're looking forward to using the system," said Liz Ponce, CEO of Lassen Canyon Nursery in Redding, Calif., one of five strawberry plant producers sponsoring the NREC project. "All of our stakeholders feel that it has a lot of potential." The other sponsors are Driscoll Nursery Associates; Nor Cal Nursery, Inc.; Plant Sciences, Inc.; and Crown Nursery LLC. Together, the five producers represent about 85 percent of the California strawberry plant nursery market.

To maintain good strawberry yields, commercial berry growers must replace their plants every year. During the fall harvest season, strawberry plant nursery farms use manual labor to sort several hundred million strawberry plants into good and bad categories â€” a tedious and costly process. The strawberry plant sorter uses computer vision to examine harvested plants that pass by on a conveyor belt. The sorter's novel machine learning algorithms allow it to be taught how to classify strawberry plants of different sizes, varieties and stages of growth, beyond the simple classification of good and bad plants. This introduces dramatic new efficiencies for strawberry nursery farms, helping them improve quality, streamline production and deliver better strawberry plants to berry growers, which in turn produces better strawberries for consumers.

"The sorter can adapt to plants that vary from year to year, or even within the same growing season," said Christopher Fromme, the project's manager and lead engineer. "It's very flexible." During a 10-day field test in October, NREC engineers tested the strawberry plant sorter under realistic conditions, where rain and frost change plants' appearance, and roots may contain mud and debris.

The prototype system had to sort plants of different varieties and levels of maturity. While in the field, it sorted more than 75,000 strawberry plants. On average, it sorted 5,000 plants per hour, several times faster than human sorting. The NREC hopes to achieve sorting rates of 20,000-30,000 plants per hour with the final system.

While the sorter's overall error rate was close to that of human workers, it inspected and sorted plants more consistently. "That's the beauty of it," Ponce said. "Hand sorting varies more and has more drift in quality." The successful field trial concludes phase two of a five-phase program that will develop a machine ready for commercial operations. Phase three will develop better methods to separate harvested strawberry plants for inspection, improve the sorter's robustness and ease of use, and integrate it into the nurseries' harvesting and packaging processes. Whether it can be adjusted to fit Kashrus requirements is something that must be examined. Either way, the technology is a bit of a wait.

In the meantime, Mexican strawberries should always be avoided. ♦

Shadchan Incentive Program

Hazelnuts Recalled Due to Risk of Salmonella Poisoning

Willamette Shelling of Newberg, OR is recalling 114,350 lbs of Shelled Hazelnuts, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

After product sampling, Salmonella was found on one production lot. To ensure consumer safety, Willamette Shelling has decided to recall all shelled hazelnuts processed at its facility from October 12th 2009 through November 25th 2009.

Hazelnuts subject to the recall were shelled at Willamette Shelling's facility on behalf of hazelnut processors. Shelled Hazelnuts processed by Willamette Shelling were returned to Oregon processors and a Canadian processor, and were further distributed by those firms. Unshelled hazelnuts are not affected by this recall.

All products subject to recall were packed in 25 lbs. and 50 lbs. corrugated boxes with lot code numbers 296091A, 299091A, 300091A, VH3696BO, and 310091A. Those corrugated boxes bore the following brand names: Kunze Farms, Evonuk Oregon Hazelnuts, Canadian Hazelnuts, and Firestone Farms.

Whole Foods has recalled an unspecified amount of organic raw hazelnuts and non-organic dry roasted hazelnuts sold in bulk through its stores in: California, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington.

Harry and David has recalled all raw, shelled hazelnut kernels sold in Harry & David Country Village store in Medford, Oregon.

Burnt Ridge Orchards of Onalaska WA, has recalled 98 pounds of shelled hazelnuts sold at the Olympia Farmer’s Market in Olympia, WA.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

Hazelnut processors who used Willamette Shelling's facility in 2009 are urged to return the product to Willamette Shelling. Consumers with questions may contact Ben Mitchell at (503) 538-9256, Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. PST.
