Pointe-des-Monts, Quebec, is most well-known for its natural beauty as well as for its lighthouse. The lighthouse has become a relatively popular tourist destination in the area, as the view from the lighthouse keeper’s house allows one to see whales, seals, and ducks. The lighthouse holds great significance in Quebec’s maritime history, built in 1830 and designated a historical monument in 1965.

The Honore Mercier Bridge, usually referred to as just the Mercier, is a bridge in Quebec, Canada, that connects the Montreal borough of LaSalle with the Mohawk reserve of Kahnawake. The bridge has two lanes of traffic in either direction and it spans about 1.25 miles. It is estimated that as many as 29.5 million vehicles cross the bridge every year, whereas before the bridge was constructed, a ferry service had to be used.

But a ride on the Ferris wheel is always romantic and provides some of the most incredible views of the city.  In the Pier Park there are other rides that may appeal to you and your sweetheart. And if heights are your thing the new Navy Pier AeroBalloon might just tickle your socks off. This helium filled balloon rises 35 stories or 350 feet above the city to give you 360 degree views of the magnificent skyline and Lake Michigan. Navy Pier also has a number of stages featuring a variety of productions, including an IMAX, but the most romantic theatre option on Navy Pier is the Shakespeare Theater, the winner of the 2008 Tony Award for excellence in regional theater. Navy Pier is so full of activities that couple can pick and choose their favorite activities and make a day of it. And don’t forget the nightly fireworks!

Chicago’s Theatre Scene

Chicago has an incredible theatre district, it’s not quite Broadway but it sure tries hard. And it’s the noted home of Second City, which was where many of Saturday Night Live’s original cast cut their comedy teeth. There are always a large number of productions occurring at a variety of theatres across the city, you can find such staples as Blue Man Group performing almost every night or you can catch a Broadway production on the road. There are also more obscure plays to make you laugh, cry, or even get a little angry, but no matter what its always an entertaining experience.

So if a couple hundred dollars is not in your budget for a romantic meal, how about stopping at the Signature Lounge on the 96^th floor for a cocktail and to enjoy the views of the city below.

Adler Planetarium

Is there anything more romantic than an evening under the stars with someone you love? At the Adler Planetarium in Chicago you can experience that evening at any time of the day and any day of the year. The planetarium’s famous Zeiss planetarium theater hosts Night Sky Live! which provides guests with a deeper look at the incredible diversity of the universe around us. Adler after Dark is a new program and is held every third Thursday of the month for adults 21 and over. The event features cocktails and appetizers and occurs from 6pm to 10pm, it’s the best way to take in everything the planetarium has to in an intimate setting.

The National Mall is especially these days as the location where the massive crowd formed to see the inauguration of President Barrack Obama.  Over forty years ago, it was famous for a similar occasion when people gathered there to hear Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech.  The mall is also home to a wide array buildings, most of which are fabulous museums.

Washington Monument

Completed on December 6^th, 1884, the Washington Monument to this day is still the tallest stone structure and obelisk in the world. It is also the tallest building in Washington DC. If that’s not impressive enough, when the monument was first completed, it was tallest man-made structure in the world until the Eiffel Tower was completed a few years later.

Lincoln Memorial & Reflecting Pool

As the name suggests, this memorial was built in honor of Abraham Lincoln, the 16^th President of the United States. It was dedicated on May 30^th, 1922. The memorial can be found at the opposite end of the National Mall from the United States Capitol. Together, these two structures form the “book ends” of the park. The Lincoln Memorial’s reflecting pool is the largest in Washington DC. It reflects both the Lincoln and Washington Memorials.

Jefferson Memorial

Often overlooked as part of the National Mall, the Jefferson Memorial was indeed created with the mall in mind. While the east and west bookends of the mall are the Lincoln Memorial and the Capital Building, the Jefferson Memorial serves as a south anchor point for the mall, with the Whitehouse located directly north. The Jefferson Memorial was completed in 1943, having initially been spearheaded by President Franklin Roosevelt, who held a great admiration for Thomas Jefferson.

United States Capitol Building

Located at the top of Capitol Hill, this is home to the United States Congress, the Legislative Branch of the United States government.  Both the Senate and the House of Representatives have their own chambers here, where they do business.  It is in the House of Representatives chamber where the President of the United States gives his annual State of the Union Address.

Ulysses S. Grant Memorial

Located at the base of Capitol Hill, this memorial honors President Ulysses S. Grant.  Looking at the memorial, though, it is obvious that Grant is especially commemorated for his role during the American Civil War in which he defeated Robert E. Lee.  The statue of Grant astride his favorite horse, Cincinnati, faces down the length of the National Mall, directly to the statue of Lincoln, Grant’s Commander and Chief during the war.

National Air and Space Museum

When people think about the “Smithsonian Institute” it is more than likely they are thinking of the Smithsonian Institute’s National Air and Space Museum. Glamorous Glennis, the first plane the break the sound barrier, is here. This is also home to the Spirit of St. Louis, and an actual Wright Flyer.

National Museum of Natural History

This is the natural history museum of the Smithsonian Institute.  The museum’s most well known attractions are its Hall of Mammals, Hall of Dinosaurs, Hall of Geology Gems, and Minerals, its live Insect Zoo, and of course its IMAX theater.

National Museum of American History

Another of the Smithsonian Institute’s museums.  The key artifact at the heart of this museum is the original Star Spangled Banner.  This is the flag Francis Scott Key saw flying over Fort McHenry when he was inspired to write the poem that became the United States national anthem.

United States Botanic Garden

This is the oldest continually operating botanic garden in the United States.  In 1842, Charles Wilkes returned from the “United States Exploring Expedition” with a massive collection of plants previously unknown to the United States.  This garden was ultimately built to house those plants.  Within the garden today, there are still four plants that are believed to either be the actual plants from the expedition or their descendents.

National Museum of the American Indian

This is the Smithsonian Institute’s museum dedicated to the original natives of the United States.  This museum actually has three facilities, with this building being just one of them.  Interestingly enough, the museum is just as much dedicated to focusing on the Native Americans living today as it is to their history.

Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden

This is Smithsonian Institute’s museum that focuses on art created after WWII, especially during the last thirty years.  The building itself is a work of modern art as it is a cylinder resting on four legs above the ground.

Arts and Industries Building

This is the second oldest building in the National Mall that is used by the Smithsonian Institute.  The building has primarily been utilized to house the exhibits from the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition.

Smithsonian Institution Building

This is the home of the Smithsonian Institute’s administrative offices and information center.  The building’s appearance has earned it the nickname, “The Castle”.  Of all the Smithsonian Institute’s buildings, this one was the first.  It was completed in 1855.  While the building gained electric lighting in 1895, it wasn’t until 1968-1970 that the building was fully retrofitted with all the modern conveniences of climate control, modern electrical systems, and elevators.

Freer Gallery of Art

This is one of the two Smithsonian Institute galleries dedicated to Asian Art.  The gallery was founded by Charles Lang Freer who dedicated his vast art collection to the United States as well as enough funds to build a museum to house them.  Although the gallery primarily exhibits Asian art, Freer also owned an impressive collection of American art too, which is also shown in the museum.

Arthur M. Sackler Gallery

This is the second Smithsonian Institute gallery dedicated to Asian Art.  It opened in 1987 when Arthur M. Sackler donated his own Asian Art collection of some 1000 pieces as well as $4 million to help with constructing a gallery to house them.

National Museum of African Art

As the name would suggest, this is the Smithsonian Institute’s museum dedicated to African Art.  Interestingly enough, it actually began as a private museum in 1964 only to become part of the Smithsonian a few years later in 1979.  Its building features a circular motif, which is used throughout its design.

National Gallery of Art & Sculpture Garden

This museum is actually comprised of two buildings linked by an underground tunnel, with a large sculpture garden beside them. The West Building was built in a neoclassical style. In contrast, the east building is designed to appear as if it were several interlocking prisms.

Suffice to say, if you’re a person who loves museums, the National Mall in Washington DC is a virtual heaven with something for almost everyone.  It’s the sort of place one visits for a day and wishes they could stay for a month.

Traveling London is an exciting adventure, there is so much to see and do it’s hard to fit it all into one trip but using the following guide will help you plan your visits to the top landmarks in London.

Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace is another official residence of the British monarchy but it also serves as the administrative headquarters. Like Kensington Palace, the state rooms are also open to the public every year for most of August and September. This palace is most often used by the reigning royalty to host visitors and more than 50,000 guests are invited to participate in official events each year.

Trafalgar Square

Trafalgar Square is the largest square in London and is considered a central meeting site for many since the Middle Ages. Back in the Middle Ages the site was known as Charing and then Charing Cross. In the center of the square is Nelson’s Column in honor of Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson. Throughout the square are a number of other statues and two fountains. Circling the square are many historical buildings that are also great stops for tourists.

Big Ben and Parliament Building

Big Ben is a nickname for the bell of the clock in the Palace of Westminster but the nickname often is used to refer to the clock tower itself. The first clock tower in Westminster was built in 1288 but was destroyed in 1834 and the new one was built in its place. The tower is a famous tourist attraction but the interior is not open to the public, well actually it’s not open to non-U.K. residents. The clock is known for its accuracy but small adjustments must be made regularly, this is done by putting a penny on or taking a penny off of the top of the pendulum. One penny creates a 0.4 second adjustment.

Parliament

Parliament is the where all official government activities take place for the United Kingdom. It is where laws are made, debates are held, and the House of Commons and House of Lords meet to complete their elected duties. Parliament is open to the public and visitors can watch committee hearings and debates. Although debates are open to the public year round, foreigners are only allowed to tour Parliament during the Summer Opening.

Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey is actually nickname for The Collegiate Church of St. Peter at Westminster and is the traditional site of English and British coronations and burials. According to tradition the Abbey was first founded in the 600s, proven origins are in the 960s or early 970s. It wasn’t until around 1045 to 1050 that a stone Abbey was built on the location. And the present church didn’t come into being until 1245. Tours are open to the public regularly and guests can attend mass if they wish.

Cleopatra’s Needle

Cleopatra's Needle

Located on the Thames Embankment, Cleopatra’s Needle is an obelisk that was originally constructed for Tuthmose III. The originally hieroglyphics praised Tuthmose and later ones were added by Ramesses II to celebrate his victories. The area is decorated with other touches of Egyptian art and architecture and seem pleasingly out of place on the riverbank.

Piccadilly Circus in London is much like Times Square in New York, it’s a famous road junction in the center of the city. Built in 1819, Piccadilly Circus originally connected the major shopping district of Piccadilly and Regent Street but now has grown into tie in the theater district and several other major streets. If you’re out and about in London it’s almost impossible to miss Piccadilly Circus.

Tower Bridge in London is a very recognizable structure situated over the River Thames. The two towers on the bridge are connected at the top by walkways, cars actually drive along the lower portion. Each day more than 40,000 people, both motorists and pedestrians, cross the bridge. Because the Tower Bridge is such an iconic structure it’s often called the London Bridge but the London Bridge is actually further upstream and not nearly as impressive.

Tower of London

The Tower of London began in the early 1080s as a stone tower created by William the Conqueror and was something totally unique in its day. Throughout the centuries the monarchs that followed added to the fort, turning it into a massive structure that serves as a fortress, palace and prison. There are a number of things to do at the Tower of London during your visit and many exhibits to see including the crown jewels, Henry VIII’s arms and armor, the Medieval Palace and Tower Green, the site of many noted executions. But one of the sites that many visitors don’t catch a glimpse of are the many ghosts of the Tower of London, keep your eyes peeled in case you’re lucky enough to see one of these elusive attractions.

St. Paul’s Cathedral

Since 604 AD a cathedral dedicated to St. Paul has stood on this site. Today’s structure is the fourth such cathedral and dates back to 1675. The cathedral is a cornerstone for the Christian faith in London and has served as the church of choice for many significant events throughout the centuries. In 2010 the cathedral will celebrate its 300^th anniversary (construction wasn’t officially completed until 1710) and multiple celebrations and events will be held in honor of this iconic structure.

Kensington Palace

Kensington Palace

Kensington Palace has been a residence for the British Royal Family since the 17^th century and is considered the primary residence of the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, the Duke and Duchess of Kent and Prince and Princess of Kent. It is probably best known as the primary residence of Diana, Princess of Wales until her death. Visitors can tour the state rooms which are opened to the public. As you can imagine there are a great deal of stories, some true some not, associated with Kensington Palace.

These are just a few of the most popular landmarks in London, there are several others that top tourist lists of things to see and do. It’s difficult not to get overwhelmed by the historical significance of almost everything around you. London is an incredible place to visit and there’s a little bit of something for everyone’s tastes.

Sanssouci, which translated from French as “carefree,” is the former summer palace of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia. Located in Potsdam, near Berlin, Sanssouci is often referred to as one of Germany’s answers to Versailles. Although it is much smaller than Versailles and different in style, Sanssouci is notable for its large variety of temples and follies. Despite its size, Sanssouci is essentially an enormous one-story villa.

The Luxor in Las Vegas was one of the first fully themed hotels on the strip with its ancient Egyptian décor. Building for this pyramid shaped hotel began in 1991, the same year Treasure Island and the MGM Grand broke ground. In 2007 the hotel was renovated and many of the ancient Egyptian touches were removed.

The Luxor has 4,407 rooms which vary according to type and amenities. Pyramid Deluxe Rooms are in the pyramid and reach 350 feet into the air. More than 2,200 of these Deluxe Rooms over look the atrium, giving you an incredible view. The Tower Deluxe Rooms are housed in the twin towers and have incredible views of the city. The Pyramid Spa Suites come with your own private spa tub and a separate sitting room. The Tower Luxury Suites are more like apartments than hotel rooms at 780 square feet each. There are separate living and bedroom areas and some rooms feature floor to ceiling windows with incredible views. Tower Premier Suites are even bigger at over 1000 square feet each with separate living rooms, bedrooms and dining area. And the Player Deluxe Rooms are really just for serious gamblers who are more interested in the casino than their rooms.

The Luxor’s big property attraction is a huge beam of light that shoots out of the top of the pyramid. It is touted to be the strongest beam of light in the world and can be seen for miles around, it can even be spotted from airplanes in L.A. But some other attractions are more worthy of your time. Taking a cue from traveling museum exhibits the Luxor has included BODIES. . .The Exhibition and Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition. Both of these exhibits are exceptional and worth checking out even if you’re not staying at the Luxor.

The Luxor also features special events throughout the year for their Players Club members and big celebrations for big winners.

Fusia Seating Luxor Hotel Las Vegas

The Luxor has lost many of its old restaurants with the 2007 renovations and come up with some new winners. TENDER Steak & Seafood is a traditional steakhouse headed by award winning chef KC Fazel. Company Kitchen and Pub House creates tapas style dishes, small fare that is meant to be tasted and shared by everyone at the table, it’s a great place to try a huge variety of items. CatHouse is a restaurant entertainment experience, but leans toward the “adult” side of things. T&T is a rock and roll style Mexican restaurant that is spice and exciting. Pyramid Café is a more downscale dining option, its open 24/7 so it’s perfect for a light meal, breakfast or a snack. Backstage Deli is perfect for lunch, especially if you’re hungry for a New York deli sandwich. MORE is the buffet at Luxor and has a lot of everything. There is also a Food Court, a Burger Bar and In-Room Dining for guests.

Criss Angel is a large draw at the Luxor which isn’t surprising when you look at their other regular entertainment. Criss Angel Believe by Cirque du Soleil is an amazing and quite haunting show that will awe and amaze you in ways you couldn’t imagine. Fantasy claims to be ideal for couples but be aware there are some topless dancers. Carrot Top is the headlining comedian at the Luxor. And for musical lovers, Menopause The Musical brings comedy and music to the stage with parodies from the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

The Kintai Bridge is located in the Japanese city of Iwakuni, which is in turn located in Japan’s Yamaguchi Prefecture. Spanning the Nishiki River, the Kintai Bridge features a series of five wooden bridges. Although the bridge was originally built in 1673, it was rebuilt in 1953 after flooding from a typhoon destroyed it. The original bridge was notable because, despite its size, it used no metal at all. The reconstructed bridge makes use of some metal nails.

If you’re visiting San Francisco then you’re in luck when it comes to gastronomical delights. The city is a bona fide foodie hotspot and gaining critical acclaim for the variety of cuisine and the incorporation of incredible fresh local produce and seafood. Gary Danko

Gary Danko

Gary Danko is an award winning chef and brings his fantastic cuisine to the San Francisco market with his self named restaurant, Gary Danko. The restaurant in its seventh year has earned its sixth Five Star rating from Mobil and has been listed as a Relais & Chateau designation. The intimate restaurant features some of the most attentive wait staff in the city and some classic food that is sure to delight. Gary Danko prides himself on his tried and true recipes and refuses to be cutting edge and trendy when it comes to food. The prix-fixe menu is probably the way to go with three, four, or five course meals and wine pairings can be added to each course for an additional fee. The wine cellar features more than 1,500 wines so even if you decide to go off of the prix-fixe you can find a wine that will perfectly fit the meal. If wine is not your cup of tea, how about a cup of tea? Gary Danko now features a tea service with selected tease form the Rishi Tea Company.

Dottie’s True Blue Café

Sometimes the hottest restaurants aren’t the newest, the most cutting edge or ones with noted chefs, sometimes they’re like Dottie’s True Blue Café, an old staple that serves comfort diner style food. Come for breakfast or lunch (as they’re not open for dinner) and be prepared to stand in line for quite a while. The food isn’t necessarily good for you but it’s incredible tasting and everything is made fresh, including the baked goods.

Fleur de Lys

Speaking of famous chefs, there is almost none more famous than Hubert Keller, the Chef and Owner of Fleur de Lys. Noted as one of the most romantic restaurants in San Francisco, Fleur de Lys has been a staple in this city for more than 45 years. It wasn’t until 1986 that Hubert Keller joined the restaurant and together with his co-owner Maurice Rouas they brought Fleur de Lys to new levels. The menu at Fleur de Lys lets guests choose from three, four and even five course menus with a variety of appetizers and entrees and extras. There are also a number of vegetarian selections for the non-meat eaters in the crowd.

Chapeau!

It almost seems crazy to open a French restaurant in a city that already houses Chef Hubert Keller, but Chapeau! does it and does it well. This upscale dining room is full of romantic French touches and the owners do their best to reach out to each customer and make their visit enjoyable. The food is traditional country fare, nothing fancy or imaginative here, just the old classics with a French emphasis. The multi course prix-fixe menu gives you a great way to sample a variety of the best selections on the menu. And if you’re willing to arrange your schedule, the early bird specials are incredible values and a good way to experience Chapeau!

Boulevard

Since its opening in 1993 Boulevard has been a favorite in the San Francisco area with Chef Nancy Oakes at the helm. The beautiful Belle Époque style of the restaurant makes it a destination in itself but the amazing American regional flavors with French influenced style makes the meal something you won’t soon forget. Located in the popular waterfront area in the historic Audiffred Building this restaurant is the perfect way to cap off an evening after a day exploring San Francisco’s waterfront.

Speaking of the waterfront, it’s hard to ignore San Francisco’s proximity to the ocean so it just goes to reason that there are some incredible seafood restaurants in the area and Aqua is one of the best. Aqua is upscale and elegant with a theatrical sense about it. Having earned a two star from the Michelin Guide you know that this restaurant is one of the best and with the freshest local and imported seafood its one of the best restaurants for seafood with a European flair.

Greens Restaurant

Executive Chef Annie Somerville has earned quite a reputation for herself and Greens Restaurant with her unique approach to vegetarian cooking. Whether you’re a vegetarian or not, you’ll love the cuisine at Greens Restaurant because it features the freshest seasonal organic ingredients in incredibly creative ways. The dishes are created not just for flavor but they also take color and texture into consideration to provide a dish that really puts its best foot forward. Expect flavors from the Mediterranean, Mexico, and the American Southwest.

Masa’s

Masa’s in San Francisco is a fine dining experience that shouldn’t be missed if you’re in the area. Their noted Californian French cuisine is headed by Chef Gregory Short and marries classic French techniques with Californian ingredients. This particular region of the country is bursting with fresh produce and other ingredients which gives them a variety of directions to take any seasonal fare. Expect greatness each and every time you visit Masa’s.

Mama’s on Washington Square

Another long time favorite for the citizens of San Francisco, Mama’s on Washington Square has been a family owned and run business for almost 50 years and has always been in the same location. The quaint cozy restaurant is welcoming to all and there can be a wait as the dining room only seats about 50 people, max. The food is all fresh and made entirely on premises, even the baked goods. Take advantage of those specialty homemade breads as they may be some of the best you’ve ever had. Weekends are extraordinary with different specials and 11 different kinds of omelets. Again, another restaurant that only serves breakfast and lunch so plan on having one of the best meals of the day early.

The London Arch is a natural rock formation in the shape of an arch located in Port Campbell National Park, Australia. It is one of the main tourist attractions situated along the Great Ocean Road, Australia’s most famous scenic coastline drive. The formation was formed through thousands of years worth of natural erosion until 1990, when the double-span bridge became complete.
