Just a quick note right now to say hello after a bit of a ‘blog gap’.

First thing’s first, let me wish you all a Happy New Year! I hope 2020 brings you a year of fulfilled hopes and dreams and one that is packed with people you love, memorable experiences and, perhaps most importantly, peace and good health.

I’m writing this while I’m full of medications to soften the symptoms of a chest infection and currently listening to news of America’s arguments in the Middle East, so those last two points seem particularly relevant today.

Hopefully you’re feeling happy and virus-free today, but in case you could do with a smile, here is a photo of Jasper, my son Billy’s gorgeous one-year-old cockapoo, playing ‘spot the real dog’ among the soft toys…

… and one of my other son Charlie about to carve the best turkey I’ve ever cooked – all 9 moist, tasty kilograms of it!

I was hoping to tell you that I will be hosting the first of a new series of ‘Morning Style with Kathy’ on Wednesday at 10am. I’m afraid it will be ‘Morning Style in the safe hands of Katy’ instead.

There is a fantastic line up of outfits put together by our wonderful back stage stylist Stine, with much of what’s on the show being new, so I hope you can join Katy and her guest Aisling McCloy.

I am asthmatic and type 2 diabetic (so much for my supposed ‘fit and healthy former athlete’ image…!!) and both of these can complicate how I react to certain bugs and the way they can be treated. Judging by how other QVC presenters have been felled by this particular lurgy, it’s a nasty one, but I really hope to be back with you next week.

I was asked to take a couple of photos of the desirable Kipling bag (181987) featuring this Wednesday as our Today’s Special Value. As I was heading north to the Lake District to stay with my brother Pete for a weekend, I decided to give my sample its very own fashion shoot with some stunning backdrops from one of the most beautiful parts of the UK.

I thought I’d also share with you some pictures of me managing to do something I’ve wanted to for a while. I love the exhilaration of swimming outdoors and Wastwater, England’s deepest lake, has been on my swim list for a while. It’s a majestically beautiful place in any weather, with rich colours on the scree slopes and vegetation, and the darkest of lake waters.

I hadn’t really planned on it being so late in the year but hey ho, when your brother offers to go in with you, it has to be done! So we donned wet-suits to help extend the dip, so that we could actually swim rather than just run in and out again, and in we went (it was really VERY cold)!

And yes, that is snow on the summit of Scarfell behind us… bonkers, maybe, but we felt fabulous afterwards!

Good luck with your Christmas shopping and preparations, I hope everything is going to plan but please don’t get stressed. It’s really all about spending time with those you love, if you’re lucky enough to have them with you. It’s not about creating a Christmas fit for a magazine centre spread…

It’s November already, which means the ground should be cold enough to embrace my tulip bulbs without turning them to mold, so I enjoyed a few hours in the garden clearing the containers, planting the bulbs and generally having a pre-winter tidy up.

There is still colour and interest: from the magnificent beech tree autumn palette of greens and golds against a clear blue sky on the road up to my front gate, to the bright fuchsia petals determined to keep memories of summer alive – even while dripping with rain – and the lovely geometric shapes created by mushrooms near my compost heap.

But, November also brings thoughts about the approaching season and the fact that Christmas is on its way! Working at QVC means that I am never caught out, as we are always so well prepared with ideas for gift giving, home decorating, party preparing  and easy entertaining.

Olley and I have enjoyed some wonderful holidays in the UK this summer, travelling to Wales, Scotland and Cornwall in our motorhome. We’ve also been pretty lucky with the weather while we’ve been away. With so many beautiful places to explore in our own country, who needs to travel abroad?!

Having said that, as autumn sets in and I’m already suffering from my first chesty cold of the season, I’ve sneakily managed to snatch a few days in the warmth of the Mediterranean sunshine in Greece. It’s always a bit sad to say goodbye to summer, but it’s never bad fashion-wise. My favourite time of year is now, when I can dust off my trusty ankle boots and begin to add layers to my outfits. This provides many more options when I’m putting a look together.

The end of September has certainly heralded the start of autumn. But, of course, fashion is always ahead of the game and this week sees the launch of the first new styles for QVC Winter! It doesn’t mean we’re expecting snow next week, but the time is ripe to start planning for the chilly days to come.

On Wednesday and Thursday we will be showcasing the best and latest of your favourite fashion, accessory and jewellery brands with our minds on keeping cosy. It’s our first Winter Fashion event of this season.

The best news is that everything – clothes, shoes, jewellery, boots and bags – comes with a reduced £1.95 p&p. There will be lots of special prices and plenty of new styles to enjoy.

At 9am on Wednesday and Thursday I will be bringing you a New Season Fashion show, which will feature almost exclusively new pieces and also the Today’s Special Value, including the All Weather mid-length leather Emu boot.

Gok will be with Catherine Huntley at 9pm on Wednesday evening to launch the range and the TSV, which is a stunning pair of slim leg washable faux suede trousers, in petite (181673) or regular (181674) length. They have a side zip and stylish stitching detail on the front, plus zips at the ankles to help create different looks with a variety of footwear.

The fabric is soft and supple and has a nap just like real suede. I’ve included a photo of me wearing them here, as well as some close-ups of the detail. Choose from the tan or chocolate colours I’ve featured, or red, olive green or classic black. I love all of them!

One of my favourite pieces from Gok’s collection is a beautifully cut check blazer. There is also a lovely pencil skirt and blouson top in a matching animal print, one in a small scale and one larger scale. I hope you find plenty to love, too!

Earlier this year, I was lucky enough to have the chance to stand on the top of Table Mountain in Cape Town towards the end of an amazing holiday in Namibia and South Africa. On Saturday last weekend, on what I think must have been the last day of summer for this year, I climbed to the top of another Table Mountain, this time the one overlooking Crickhowell in the Brecon Beacons in Wales.

Olley and I were enjoying another motor home trip and my word, we picked the right week to go weather wise! Standing on the flat top of Table Mountain (strictly speaking at only 451 metres high, it’s really only a hill) soaking in the glorious sunshine as I enjoyed the 360 degree stunning views, I felt happy simply to be alive!

It was a feeling I enjoyed a number of times during our week away – it usually happens when I’m outside and active in lovely surroundings. My heart swells and lifts in my chest and I’m suddenly aware of how little you need to feel content. Good health, the love of a good man and three thriving children just about sums it up!

We split our time between the mountains and the coast, with a few days in the Gower as well. The sea was warm enough to swim in, and our campsite was right on the cliffs overlooking a beautiful beach. I found the perfect spot on the cliff top to lay down my yoga mat and greet the morning with some ‘sun salutations’!

When you have the weather, there is nowhere else in the world to beat the UK. We’ve enjoyed Scotland, Wales and Cornwall in our motorhome this year, hopefully we might get to Ireland next year…

But, of course, the weather never stays the same for long and autumn has definitely arrived. I’m writing this in the passenger seat while Olley drives us to Peterborough through driving rain and horrendous conditions for our regular Tuesday treat of looking after our granddaughter Zoe. It’s hard to believe that we were basking in tropical temperatures only days ago.

It’s back to work for me tomorrow – I’m going to notice the darker mornings now. But there’s lots to brighten our days with some of the fabulous deals we have coming up at QVC. I’m writing this on Sunday evening with a beautiful view in front of me as the sun sets over Bembridge Harbour in the Isle of Wight.

Olley and I have enjoyed a weekend here courtesy of our children, whose special birthday present to their Dad for his 70th earlier this year was a couple of nights in a luxurious houseboat moored on the edge of the harbour.

With a large balcony and uninterrupted views of all the boating activity and bird life that thrives here, it’s been somewhere to just sit in the September sunshine and relax (something I don’t do enough). We were also celebrating our 32nd wedding anniversary, so it was the perfect place to enjoy a bottle of champagne together.

You can’t come to this lovely island and not do at least a little exploring, so we’ve enjoyed a couple of brisk beach walks too – some of you will recognise the Bembridge RNLI station on the end of the pier, and we also visited Compton Beach.

As we usually stay in our motor home it was a real treat to have stylish B&B accommodation. Our room was decorated with quirky but elegant and individual pieces of furniture and a luxuriously comfortable bed which I slept really well in. I hope you stayed safe and didn’t have to change your plans too much. Despite the weather, Olley and I still carried on with the weekend that we had been looking forward to since my birthday, as my sons Charlie and Billy had gifted me tickets to the European Modern Penthathlon Championships to be held in Bath for us all to attend.

It’s hard to believe that it was 40-years-ago this month that I won my world title in the multi-discipline sport! It has changed a little in format since my day but essentially it is the same: swimming, fencing, show jumping, shooting and running.

Olley and I enjoy staying at the motorhome campsite in Bath Marina just west of the city, while Billy and his fiance Mel live in a flat in Keynsham near Bath. Charlie and his girlfriend Maddie stayed with them and we had a fantastic family weekend, only missing Bex, Dan and Zoe.

It was certainly fun to watch the sport but I’m glad it’s them and not me any more! It was exciting because Britain is really very good at this sport and we had a couple of men in contention for the gold medal right from the start.

The stormy weather played its part, as the riding event had to be delayed by several hours! The wind was blowing all the show jumping poles down. It wouldn’t have be safe and the horses wouldn’t have been happy.

In the end, the competition was completed in evening sunshine and it was Jamie Cooke who took the title after a grueling day of competition. We also won the men’s team event, so our National Anthem was played twice while the Union flag flew high.

The boys said watching the combination of the athlete’s skill, determination, commitment and stamina that is needed to excel in this demanding sport had helped them see their old mum with new admiration and respect. So it was a day well spent!!

I do enjoy Bath as a city, it’s such a lovely place to spend some quality time. I often visited when I was a child as my Mum was born there and Granny lived there until she died.

We parked our motorhome in a campsite right on the River Avon and I took the opportunity the following morning to take Billy and Mel’s lovely eight month old puppy Jasper for a walk in the gorgeous countryside. They’ve trained him very well – he’s a bit bonkers and runs everywhere at a million miles an hour but never strays far before coming back to base for a treat. His ears flap up and down as he bounds around and he makes me smile.

I hope you didn’t melt from the hot weather spell that some of the country experienced recently. My daughter Bex is a doctor and was working in a hospital in Huntingdon, only 20 miles from Cambridge where the highest temperature was recorded there. Luckily for her (and the patients) the air conditioning was working well!

Olley and I managed to escape all the heat and mugginess by booking a spot in a touring campsite close to St Agnes, on the North Cornwall coast. It’s right on the cliffs overlooking the sea, the South West Coastal Path and also some old tin mines – right in the middle of Poldark! We enjoyed the pleasantly warm weather and sea breezes that meant we never overheated, even inside our motor-home.

It’s such a magnificent part of our endlessly beautiful country. I enjoyed several superbly scenic walks and also some swims in a rather lively surf, as well as some delicious seafood. There are some fantastic places to eat in Cornwall and we enjoyed several of them!

When we are travelling in our motor-home we tend to park up and settle for a few days. We prefer not to use the van to get around locally, as it means putting everything away inside and unhooking from the electricity. So we load up a motor scooter on the back and use that instead. That’s why I’m carrying a crash helmet and wearing this leather jacket by Joe Browns, even though it was warm.

On Wednesday’s show we’ll be featuring something else for your skin as one of our Big Deals – this time for the hard skin on your feet! This week’s show really is exciting, because everything in the show will be available on easy payments, spreading the cost over three monthly installments.

This is all to celebrate the coming of Autumn Fashion, which we kick off properly at the end of the week with a two-day event on Friday and Saturday, featuring TSVs from MarlaWynne and Moda in Pelle. I’ll leave you with a few photos that I took while out for a walk first thing on Saturday – I was going to my brother’s afterwards for a barbecue and I know that he always serves up such a fabulous meal that I eat far too much. So a little exercise as damage limitation seemed a good idea, but as I kept stopping to take photos I’m not sure it was hugely effective! I enjoyed it though, the wild flowers are beautiful at the moment…
