Until now I have always looked at my list of installed applications, and decided, mostly begrudgingly, which applications to part from, to free up memory.

Today, I have decided to try something else. From long windows experience I know that over time the registry, and the hard-drive fill up with old, out-of-date and useless stuff, like leftovers from long uninstalled software, temporary files, etc…

I thought it may be possible that applications bloat with upgrades.

Test: I uninstalled DoubleTwist (weighing in at an exorbitant 14.8mb, 1.2mb of which is user data, and not moveable to SD card), then from the market reinstalled it. This up-to-date version (the same as the one I uninstalled) had no previous updates. And it only measures 9.96mb, 1.2mb of which is user data.

I freed up almost 5mb of space without loosing any applications just by uninstalling and then reinstalling one large application.

Ergo: Next time your android prompts you to update an application consider reinstalling it from the market. You may be able to make your limited memory go further.

So let’s see.

I found this ad today. It tries to get people to add the facebook game “My City Life”.

I found a second and third advert today.

How a bikini girl is representative of a farmville style game or why such an ad is supposed to make people click through is unknown to me. It looks more like one of those annoying ads for all these random dating websites.

When I made my way to the checkouts I found that there was one with barely a queue. Ok, the sign there said “Handbaskets Only”, but then again, there were only five items in my trolley. Surely the “Handbaskets Only” line’s raison d’être was to serve customers with few items, a quasi-express checkout.

When I approached the checkout, the young woman behind the till immediately laid down the law by almost shouting “Handbaskets only!”. I told her that I only needed to pay for five items, but she replied that no trolleys were allowed.

Not willing to go to a different, longer queue I took one of the baskets previous customers at that line had left, put the five items into the basket, then moved them from the basket onto the conveyor belt. Once I had paid, I took the trolley, put the bags into the trolley and left the supermarket.

This little bit of comedy brought to mind Darwin’s “On the Origin of Species”. There is also a German idiom that perfectly describes what happened here: “Die Rache des kleinen Mannes” translated: “The revenge of the little man”.

It is going to be a busy year here at Dashti Towers and some snippets of news, opinions and general “stuff” is bound to find it’s way onto the blog.
