When I made my way to the checkouts I found that there was one with barely a queue. Ok, the sign there said “Handbaskets Only”, but then again, there were only five items in my trolley. Surely the “Handbaskets Only” line’s raison d’être was to serve customers with few items, a quasi-express checkout.

When I approached the checkout, the young woman behind the till immediately laid down the law by almost shouting “Handbaskets only!”. I told her that I only needed to pay for five items, but she replied that no trolleys were allowed.

Not willing to go to a different, longer queue I took one of the baskets previous customers at that line had left, put the five items into the basket, then moved them from the basket onto the conveyor belt. Once I had paid, I took the trolley, put the bags into the trolley and left the supermarket.

This little bit of comedy brought to mind Darwin’s “On the Origin of Species”. There is also a German idiom that perfectly describes what happened here: “Die Rache des kleinen Mannes” translated: “The revenge of the little man”.

Lunch today. They are so small, but oh so unhealthy. Tasted good though. My sister made them from scratch. It appears that almost the entire family is trying to bake these days.

This is the front-page of our local newspaper. This majestic journalistic feat describes in impressive detail (continued on page 3) how a small part of the latest Harry Potter movie was filmed in the tunnel connecting Kent to Essex.
