Oh except for the fact <strike>Cyberdyne</strike> Google is entering the Operating System universe.

Now this is fine for most of you. In fact even I think it's awesome. They were once just a search engine. And then decided that was getting old and so moved on a few new things like: blogging platforms, calendars, online office documents, email, discussion forums hosting, a social site, 3D modelling software, RSS aggregation, RSS creation, online notebook, photo organisation software, online web storage to share said photos, website analysis service, instant messaging, online translation, code hosting, website creation and book searches, blog searches, all kinds of other searches. Just a few of the things Google decided to endeavour.

Oh but then,

They made an internet browser.

They made a mobile phone system.

And then decided to even have a hand in phone systems.

They even decided to reinvent email.

And now they have an arm in market of Operating Systems. The world of Windows, Linux, Solaris, Fluxbox, Unix. Oh and Mac.

You can obviously see where this is going.

Don't get me wrong. I'm all for Google. I have 4 Gmails. KL even uses Blogger. But there's a point where even the most cuddliest most adorable teddy bear can grow too large and scare the shit out of you.

I leave you now with not just only crude allusions to judgement day, internet religion and the super seriousness of cloud computing. But with a sketch I drew the day I heard Google had bought YouTube. What could possible voice my sentiments better?

Be sure to watch for the next instalment of this two part series where we discuss Google's move to acquire nuclear weapons.

Disclaimer: We are all doomed. That's right my friends. Enjoy it while it lasts. A bing-bomb. Or what I coin, a Bong.
Funnily enough Barack Obama is being bonged as well. We love you Bing, but you got a lot to learn from our Big Brotherʕ Google.
Take the recently departed George Bush Jnr for instance. He will be remembered for saying silly and oft inappropriate things (I won't mention co-existing with fish without smothering the fish in sarcasm sauce), supporting the 'War on Terror' so to speak, and generally bumbling along like a fool.

Some may constitute that as being under constant stress, the responsibility of being the 'most powerful man in the world' and all, but I say no, it's putting the wrong person in the hot seat.

Enter Barack Obama, the first black African American president of the US of A. Two weeks into the top job and he is off to a solid start. He hasn't made any of his own famous Bush-isms yet, and chances are that he won't because of his near perfect oratory skills.

I would also like to mention his priorities, namely withdrawing US troops from Iraq. I've been saying this for years, but no one has listened:

"The US would be better off if they kept their hands to themselves."

From a historical standpoint, I'm one hundred percent correct. If the US had stayed out of countries it shouldn't have been in the first place, there would be no need to pull troops out of them, all the while spending taxpayers dollars on an expensive wild goose chase.

The point I'm trying to make is that Obama will be remembered when he is no longer president, and he will be remembered for all the right reasons (not for thinking that Africa is a country).

Sylverin

P.S.

"We hold dear what our Declaration of Independence says, that all have got uninalienable rights, endowed by a Creator." - He likes contradicting himself a lot, doesn't he?

The thickness, it spreads!

Conroy: if we all didn't hate him, we'd admire his cajones.

The public DEMANDS MORE CENSORSHIP!

Seriously? Despite ringing warning sirens since forever. 1, 2. You stood idly by ignorant of the theory that would apparently never work in practice. Well now it's too late. Australia's internet will now be filtered. In fact I am so glad you guys are only rising up in indignation only now, that I have changed my stance from being against ISP level filtering to being all for it. Why? Because it's simply all too late. Why stop at ISPs when there's plenty more ways to please the educated parent and genius politician.

If this plan goes ahead, which it will, then as my good friend alacarte tells me, the Rudd government will fall. But in the end, I am told, all they care about is votes. If they will get kicked out they will do everything they can to remain. Even going against what they think is right. Perhaps, but I'm eager to see how this will go. Let's expect some real anarchy to happen on the night the system starts running.

My proposal to the Australian people. If you think the ISP filters are not enough, and that you want a tighter rule over your family's as well as your own surfing experience, then I have devised some new methods in which you can prevent a worse case scenario.

Router level filtering
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_mJMU-IFVvdI/SUxLQQFc69I/AAAAAAAABBA/bnhHUekTNXA/s1600-h/routerfilter.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; I mean come on, he's saved America from suitcase nukes, nerve gas, Russians, Middle Easterners and worst Americans themselves. That's what keeps me glued to the set than a DivX, plus watching that show continuously without any ad breaks will, I gurantee, kill you. I'll leave you to make your own judgments about that.

However I'm not here to talk about that thread. I'm here to examine the responses that this lady has posted on her profile:

http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=389063875&blogID=446524813

http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=389063875&blogID=447529067

Yes, she probably does have a right to react to all the hubbub regarding her, ahem, photoshoot, but surprisingly her response actually ticked me off. I guess I'm all riled up because that response to me just smelt like it was full of lies.

For one, if you genuinely do not care about something, then don't write up three rather long blog posts about it while insisting that you "DON'T CARE" (caps included) and are "happy and secure" several times over these posts. The simple fact is if you really didn't care, you wouldn't go to the trouble of responding at all.

Also, playing the guilt card is low. Yes, okay, its not exactly okay to bag someone out on the basis of their looks, but going 'what if I wasn't so strong' etc etc just makes you sound like an ass, trying to brag about how much you don't care and how strong you are, while also attempting to guilt people into no longer bagging you out.

Seriously. For frack's sake, if you're so on edge that the comments that random people on the Internet make on photos that you posted publicly on MySpace might just tip you 'over the edge', then don't post bloody photos on the Internet then. I've been through pretty crappy times too - we all bloody have - but if your self esteem lies on the judgement of forum guys then you need a serious reality adjustment.

Which brings me to my next point: posting your photos online. When you post photos online, you do so with an assumption that somewhere, someone may take notice of those photos and decide that they're interesting enough (in both positive and negative ways) to draw attention to. I'm not justifying the attention, mind you, but its a reality that everyone really should come to terms with.

Think of the Internet as this big crowd of people in this massive space: anything posted online is equivalent to throwing it onto the ground in this space. And occasionally, someone may spot something interesting amongst that mess and tap the person next to them to give them a peek. And so on. Perhaps you may be slaughtered: or maybe you just might become the next big meme?

So the gist of it is this: If you post photos on the Internet publicly, assume that there is a risk that you will attract attention - of either kind. If you really do care or are that insecure, then don't post photos. And if you really don't care, then don't post wordy posts about how much you don't care - that's hypocrisy.

Oh, and cut the bloody speeches about how life is lovely and beautiful and we should all dance in the fields under the glowering sun while rainbows shoot across the blue sky and butterflies hum to the tune of Stevie Wonder's "What a Beautiful World". I'm not being bitter, but I'm getting tired of this fast - imagine getting whacked over the head repeatedly by someone insisting that life sucks and you should be crying because children are starving in Africa.

This is exactly like that, except the inverse.

My point is, stop telling people how wonderful and terrible stuff is and let us make our own minds up. Be happy because you are, not because someone insists that you should be. And if you're not happy, then find out why and get working on that! Pretending to be happy because you should be is stupid, and denying that people should feel sad is ignorant and careless.

Feel what you are.

Feeling unloved?

Don't worry.

He should be proud of his monumental achievement, doing what African-Americans everywhere have only dreamed of for the last few decades. It takes courage, intelligence and integrity to compete in what most would say is a white-man's world, and to excel at it leads me to believe that the future of the United States of America is not as bleak as once thought.

But anything has to be better than Sarah "Africa is a country" Palin. I could not in good conscience vote for a Prime Minister or President (vice or otherwise) if they were that ignorant. Computer illiterate, I could handle because not everyone is brought up with a computer in the house. However, forgetting (or just plain not learning) that Africa is a continent with 53 independent and sovereign countries, then actually saying it?

*Sigh*

I am glad that the spectacle of the Presidential Elections is over though, it was beginning to drag on for too long, like the bad joke carried too far. I am looking forward to seeing some fresh thinking coming from the White House in the next few years, as well as how the American public will react to his pulling of the strings.

Already I'm disappointed that some minorities have jumped on the assassination band wagon. When I first picked them up I was pretty impressed with their sound quality, a definite step up from the earbuds I was using before. After a while though I got used to them, and then they seemed rather ordinary. And then I switched back.

Whoah. After accidentally leaving my main mp3 player and CX300 phones at a location other than home, I was forced to switch back to my old Philips earphones. They didn't suck by any means but... they sucked. I listen to mostly rock music which does have a noticeable amount of instrumental detail with the right earbuds, but all that detail I had discovered with the CX300s was totally lost when I used the Philips.

And therein lies my final motivation to actually write what I have believed all along - folks, if you're going to get an mp3 player, please, please invest in a set of decent earphones! I fail to see the logic in spending hundreds of dollars on an mp3 player yet refusing to spend less than half of that to get earphones that actually do the mp3 player and your music justice.

Especially iPods. (No bias, seriously!)

But really, all mp3 players are privy to this. If you don't believe me, look at the ever-shrinking list of accessories that come with mp3 players - they used to give us AC chargers! Nowadays I can confidently state that pretty much any mp3 player that you can purchase comes with the following components:

- MP3 Player
- Earphones
- USB Cable

Trust me, if they can save a few dollars on those last three components, they will.

Anyway, back to earphones. The foremost reason why there was such a massive difference in instrumental detail between the in-ear earphones and the standard ear buds came down largely to the different designs: while ear buds sit outside of the ear canal, in-ear earphones do as they say and are designed to be inserted into the ear canal. Not too deeply, mind you, but you do have to get used to it.

The additional sound isolation also means that you don't have to play your music as loud as you would have to with standard ear buds, since that music no longer has to compete with outside noises, so you're less likely to hit the ceiling limits of your mp3 player and subsequently experience ugly and very-bad-for-your-hearing channel distortion - especially for the treble channels.

In short, in-ear earphones enhance your music while being better for your hearing. So why use earbuds at all?

Well, it still comes down to personal preference. I wouldn't be surprised if many people were turned off by the concept of jamming anything into their ears, let alone something which pumps sound directly into them. Also since in-ears are coupled directly to your ear canal, you will hear every noise transmitted down that wire... and not just electronically. If the wires rub along your clothing then you will hear a distinct and annoying rustling noise, which makes in-ears probably not so ideal for joggers or people who almost-miss trains often.

You will eventually get used to in-ears though, and the rustling only happens if you move around a lot. And I'm sure that we aren't all joggers.

So please, if your music doesn't compose entirely of music whose main instruments are the 'umph' and 'tish' of a synthesizer (which, unfortunately these days, isn't exactly unlikely), invest in a decent pair of earphones, specifically in-ear earphones. You'll like your music more, and you'll still be able to hear it to in twenty years time! I paid $70 for my CX300s, and after hearing how they compare I'd be more than willing to pay more for a good set of earphones.

If you don't want to spend too much, then at the very least go for the Creative EP-630s, because even at $40 I know they sound much better than bundled ear buds.

They even come in white. Especially handy for those of us who enjoy the thrill and excitement of a mugging.

Word Cloud

Pffft!

If you haven't been living under a rock for the past few years with your eyes closed, ears plugged and brain switched off, you would be well aware of the insanity that is the media. Any moderately educated human being will be able to tell you what marketing is about. It's a necessary evil though, I'm not shunning it. I'm an engineering undergraduate and without those bastards no one cares what we invent. But there's a certain point where over exaggerations and mild brainwashing turn into ignorant hysteria and the sensationalisms suddenly become a whole lot more worrying.

So what has ticked me off this time? Yep you guessed it again. Apple.

I hate Apple. I'll say it again. I hate Apple. I don't hate Macs. I hate Apple. What's the difference I hear you ask? Well I love chairs. That doesn't mean I love IKEA. Let's narrow this down a little more. Maybe I don't hate Apple. I hate their marketing really.

We've all seen the "I'm a Mac" attack ads which in my opinion were pretty funny the first time around. But the persistently nagging "I'm better than you" image soon pissed me off. It brought about a stupid stereotype, the PC user was some lame and boring business guy in denial, and the Mac user was a cool and laid back guy quite pleased with himself. I do admit, If their point was Windows is far more professional than Mac OS X they would have a point. That doesn't make either OS suck more or less than the other. It just show's their direction.

Windows has always failed to stoop to an attack level and never responded to the "I'm a Mac" campaign. Until recently that is. The "I've been made into a stereotype" campaign hit us hard. It had so many mixed opinions it made comments on YouTube seem civilised.

Mac whores horded in their millions to denounce the advertising and dismiss it as a complete failure. Millions of Windows users suddenly saw some sense of belonging to these new ads. But what I saw behind all of this was the more professional image Microsoft portrayed. They never attacked back.

But back to the title of this article. On the Apple website I saw "The Most Advanced Operating System. Ever". I was at work when I came across this (while using a Mac I might add), and I just had to smile. Apple marketing at its best. They tell you what to believe. The sad thing is, heaps of people go with it.

Honestly I have no real philosophical hatred of Mac OS X, as a Mac fanboy or girl would have with a Windows. But why would you go as far as to claim that Mac OS X is the best operating system?

As even a Neanderthal could tell you, "best" is a subjective word. The very power of the word itself is in that it renders what ever sentence it is contained in an opinion. So sure, marketing is allowed to tell you they believe Mac OS X is the best. That's fine. If people believe it, that's just stupid. When someone tells me "my girlfriend is the best". I don't immediately believe she is better than mine, or anyone else's. And neither does that mean he's wrong. It just means, relative to himself, his girlfriend is the best.

But they never used the word "best". They said "Most Advanced".

Everyone knows Apple's marketing is brilliant. It's brainwashing skills are second only to fundamentalist cults and religions. They start the hype, they burn the image killers, they shun the non Apple fanatics. There is nothing more I hate than hypocrisies and ignorance. And my team here follows suit. That's why we all so coincidentally hate Apple's marketing. But let me tell you (or remind you) what their biggest going point is. That is, what they so strongly believe makes their operating system, the Macintosh OS X system the most advanced operating system this 4.6 billion year old planet has ever witnessed to exist.

"It can run Windows." (No... I'm dead serious!)

Ok lets ignore Linux here for a second (sorry Tam!). But Windows and Mac OS X are the two largest competing operating systems. Windows has over a billion users and 90% of market share. Mac makes up 7% and it's been growing pretty fast lately. But being able to run more than one operating system on a single computer sounds incredible, even impossible.

No. It's not. It's called dual boot. Any piece of hardware that calls itself a computer can do it. Mac machines only just caught up! But somehow marketing made it new. Somehow they made it cool.

Let's look at this carefully. With a Mac you can use Windows and Mac. With a PC you can't use Mac.

Gee, I wonder what the average person would choose.

Damn PCs suck! They can't run Mac OS X! Not even through a virtual machine. I'm going to switch!

Oh.

Did I forget to mention?

It's actually illegal. Yes illegal. To install Mac OS X on anything but Mac hardware.

I'll guide your thought processes here.

Oh so Apple forbids you to use Mac on a Windows machine.

But you can use Windows on a Mac machine.

So therefore the Mac is far more advanced.

Wow.

Now off the spear tip of the argument and onto the real stuff. From my experience and years of learning and understanding, currently working as a Software Engineering intern and studying Info Comm Tech engineering, having used all three major (Mac, Win, Lin) operating systems for a very long time. I will tell you. The best operating system. Is not Mac. It's not even Windows. It's Linux.

Linux runs on nearly everything. God damn it, they put Linux on Xboxes and PS3s and it's used as servers everywhere. Its free. When I say "free" I'm not just talking money-wise. You can do what ever you want with it.

I don't use Linux as much as Windows. And personally I prefer Windows out of all three. But that's personal choice.

Dude seriously. Macs don’t even have Blue Ray, no NTFS support, damn if I had the time to write a list I'd have finished the USB Panic Button hack by now! I refuse to believe an operating system that is meant to work on a about 6 different configurations of hardware is more advanced than an operating system that is built to allow the buyer to choose his or her own hardware and costs.

There's one good reason people like Macs over PCs. And that's unity and integration. And I'll give them that. The Windows operating system is designed for all kinds of machines, which is where Blue Screens almost always come from (driver or hardware screw ups). Macs rarely have that since they can thoroughly test their insanely limited hardware choices. That's what people don't realise. The Mac and PC debate is flawed.

When you say Mac. You are talking about the operating system as well as the machine itself. Windows is just the operating system, the hardware is nothing to do with it. Microsoft didn’t design the keyboard your using right now (unless it’s a Microsoft one obviously). Windows didn't design the screen your looking at either, nor did it design the DVD drive your watching your movies on.

Some people like the integration Mac offers. And that is not at all a bad thing. However I hate such restrictions. Which is why I will never switch. I also hate the marketing department enough to hate their products. We're people not lemurs.

In conclusion I think Apple is pure evil. Out to squeeze every bit of money off you more than Microsoft could ever. Making it illegal to use Mac OS X is ridiculous. Mac is not better because Windows runs on it. Windows is better in that sense that it allows you to use it on a Mac. Because of this whole ignorance I officially recommend getting a hackint0sh immediately. I will personally install mine within the month.

Frankly if Windows ever told me that crap. "It's the most advanced operating system in the world", I'd hang my head in embarrassment.

On a side note:

I won't kid you but they tried to make me get an iPod the same way those bible carrying penguins tried to make me believe in a God.

Their argument was "that small feeling inside that questions you, questions your lack of belief in God, is reason enough to believe in Him," which parallels "everyone has an iPod, you see it on TV, it's advertised everywhere, even though you hate iPods and Apple to death, you have this tingling sensation inside, that's your curiosity. You know you want it." My answer to the Jehovah's Witness - "no that's my curiosity. It's my questioning. Which is why I am atheist. All humans are born with it. Even you." My answer to the Apple fangirl - "sorry, I'm an atheist."

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/kbabslive/~3/7MBPHavlsMA/leopard-worlds-most-advanced-operating.html" title="Leopard - The World's Most Advanced Operating System.
