Getting Out of The Box

I’ve been thinking a lot about boxes lately. It might have something to do with the fact that I can’t navigate around my house without tripping over a box or tripping over something that needs to be put in a box. We’ll soon be saying goodbye to our home sweet home and moving on to the next spot God has provided. So, day after day, I’ve been trying to put “me” in to these boxes. Trying to take all the things I love and need, or think I need, and put them into as few boxes as possible. It’s almost as bad as filling out one of those forms that ask you to “Check the box that applies ” in regards to employment--I’m self-employed, a part-time employee, and a full-time homemaker. There isn’t a box for that.

We get programmed to think that if we can’t check one box to describe
us, we’re doing something wrong. We buy into these one word
definitions of ourselves. “I’m a student.” “I’m a doctor.” “I’m a
teacher.” You get the idea. We narrow down who we are to one idea and
if we’re good at it, we figure we’re off the hook, there’s no extra
effort needed. If we’re bad at it, we think we’re a failure. But God
has put many giftings in each of us. We’re created in His image. Is He
good at just one thing? The problem is we buy into the lies of the
enemy and the beautiful gifts God has given us go unwrapped. We start
to believe that even if the box had good stuff in it, the dusty, worn
paper on the outside makes it worthless.

The enemy wants nothing better than to try to strip us of our calling,
and sometimes we help him by letting fear rule our hearts, by being
more afraid of what others think then being afraid of not doing what
God is calling us to do. It’s time to shut the enemy down. The best
way to kill a lie is to confront it with the truth. We need to start
proclaiming who we are, and then walk it in. As we see gifts in
others, we need to tell each other and encourage each other. It
doesn’t matter if it’s a perfected gift or one that won’t be honed for
years. If it’s there, we need to let it be known.

I hereby challenge
each one of you to proclaim who you are. Write it out. Confess it. Do
it. I’ll go first….
Are you not getting emails? We keep one central email list. When we need to send an email to everyone in KCC, we send it through this list. If you aren't getting the emails, it's because your address hasn't been added.

If you are not on that list, we have no idea!

Evangelism in Postmodern Culture

Who wants to learn something?

I've been on a resource gathering kick lately. I've been trying to pull together resources for you, that you can actually use. This is one of those. I get questions all the time about what postmodernism is and how that might affect the way we present the gospel. One thing is for sure, many of the old ways are quickly becoming obsolete and ineffective.

This is a video of a message by Tim Keller. Now, I know, Dr. Keller isn't everyone's cup of tea. However, few others have had a greater impact on how I think about preaching, the gospel, and what ministry is than Tim Keller. He's a really smart guy, and challenges you to think deeply about deep things. Frankly, many of us are not used to thinking deeply about anything! We don't think we have the time for it or the energy. That's a shame!

Dr. Keller is talking about change that has happened in terms of how
our culture perceives religion in general and the gospel specifically.
He then draws 6 principles for presenting the gospel out of the story
of Jonah.

You can also download the audio
from Desiring God to listen later.

Ecclesiastes Wrap-Up

Everyone wants their life to mean something. Everyone wants to know that the toil of this life has some purpose beyond random coincidence and the cold machinations of fate or karhma. We want to find a way to live with purpose.

Ecclesiastes is a book that chronicles one extraordinary man's quest for meaning and significance. It's a self-portrait that shows us every wrinkle and blemish on the face of a man that has chased every thrill and pleasure imagineable, and then ultimately come to the sobering conclusion that it is all vanity, meaningless, empty... void of substance.

Many people think that Ecclesiastes is depressing. I disagree. I think if you recognize that the pleasures of this world are meaningless, when compared to the glory of knowing and following Jesus you will begin to see what Solomon only had glimmers of. Solomon looked around and all he could see was injustice and his own failures. He knew somehow this life had its meaning in worship of the Creator and I think he deeply regretted having not spent his life chasing after Him.

If you think you can navigate the perils of this life with only your talent and wit to guide you, you are a fool of the most pitiable sort. You are to be pitied because you will soon end up like Solomon and Hugh Hefner. Looking back over a life filled with chasing thrills and amassing success, but completely alone having wasted every breath of this life on things that don’t matter. Life has chewed you up and spit you out, and for what? What has it gained you? Living your life glorifying God and delighting in Him is the only life worth living. Anything and everything else is nothing more than the empty effort of fools.

Bobby Martz Recap

It's always important to tell your story. Everyone has one. You can refute theories, philisophies, and religious assertions, but you can't refute someone's story. This is an opportunity to tell yours.

More specifically, tell us what God did in you during the two meetings with Bobby Martz this past Sunday. I, for one, was blown away by two things. What he said about wanting the anointing, but not being willing to live the lifestyle that leads to it really sent me reeling. Also, I realized that all of us, myself included, tend to live a kind of reduced, pragmatic Christianity. We live on principles and leave the presence of God out. We forget that God is personal. He's close and He wants to make Himself known.

Leave a comment and tell us what happened with you!

A Word About Fasting

In preparation for Bobby Martz coming this weekend , we are fasting on Friday. If you are not familiar with the concept of prayer and fasting this may seem a little bizarre. What many people do not know is that fasting is a spiritual discipline that is practiced almost from cover to cover in the Bible. There are scriptures throughout the Bible that talk about the importance and impact of fasting.

There are two primary reasons to fast:

Obedience... It's clear that the Bible tells us to fast. On it's own, that's enough for us to take it seriously.

The Benefits... Fasting helps to strip us down and push
aside the competing selfish desires in us. It makes it easier to hear
the Holy Spirit speak to us. It breaks us out of idolatrous routines
and thought patterns. It re-establishes right priorities. It reminds
us of our dependance on Jesus for life and blessing.

The common way to approach fasting is to pick an amount of time and go without food for that amount of time. You should drink water while you fast and if you are fasting for a long period of time, consult a doctor first. Also, when you break your fast and eat again don't make that meal a big one. Be nice to your stomach. Save the Mexican jalapeno and bean burrito for another day...

Who should NOT fast food?

Persons who are physically too thin or emaciated.

Persons who are prone to anorexia, bulimia, or other behavioral disorders.

Those who suffer weakness or anemia.

Persons who have tumors, bleeding ulcers, cancer, blood diseases, or who have heart disease.

Those who suffer chronic problems with kidneys, liver, lungs, heart, or other important organs.

Individuals who take insulin for diabetes, or suffer any other blood sugar problem such as hyperglycemia.

Women who are pregnant or nursing.

There are things other than food that you can fast.
A common one is entertainment.
That would include tv, internet, books, magazines, gaming, music, maybe even your cell phone.
You can fast certain kinds of food like sweets.
You could have vegetarian fast where you only eat vegetables.
Be creative.
Ask God.
Pray about it.
The important thing is that you are depriving your "flesh" of what it wants in obedience to God and to help clear away the idolatry of self to make way for concentrated prayer.

And remember to pray!
