We can claim New York, LA, or London, but the town that produced Deane is Fresno, awesome Fresno! The coolest thing about Deane is that he is also the most polite, caring, and engaging individual with no hesitations when it comes to helping out. Meet him for yourself!

Where did you grow up and are you an only child?
I’m from Fresno and I’m the oldest of three. My brother is 5 and my sister is turning 21 in a couple weeks, which worries me… Nah, she’s a good girl.

What is your current occupation?
I’ve been a freelance web and print designer for about a year now.

What is your fantasy occupation?
My boyhood dream was to become a professional boxer, but since I’ve never put on a pair of gloves or set foot in a ring, a career in the music industry might be a more achievable goal at this point.

When did you first discover KCRW?
I’d just moved here and I was at a show and a volunteer handed me a keychain. That small, yellow, rubber keychain changed my life forever.

How did you find your way to our station for volunteering?
I started by volunteering for one of the pledge drives and I enjoyed it so much that I eventually ended up on the street team.

What’s your current volunteer position and how long have you been at it?
It started with answering phones at the front desk about 5 months ago. Recently I assisted the underwriting department, but usually I’m helping Frances Anderton with the DnA blog or having a good ol’ time in the events department.

Favorite volunteer moment?
I was picking up some food for the band and crew before an event and I’d accidentally left James Blake’s milkshake on the sidewalk while I was loading the other stuff into my car. I didn’t realize what I’d done until 5 minutes later on the drive to the studio, so I hauled-ass back, praying the entire time “PLEASE GOD LET THIS MILKSHAKE STILL BE THERE!” I parked and sprinted back to the spot where I’d left it and ohhh man was I so happy to find the James Blake’s chocolate-hemp milkshake sitting on that curb untouched. Phew!

If you could get on the mic and say one sentence on the air, what would it be?
I could probably think of something really clever to say, but I know in the end I’d just end up giving my mom a shout-out.

What song have you hit repeat on lately?
Autre Ne Veut – Play by Play. If you haven’t heard it yet, buy me a drink and I’ll gladly try and sing it for you.

Favorite book, movie?
Swingers still makes me laugh even though I’ve seen it a million times and Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises is one that I often come back to when I have nothing new to read.

Favorite thing to do outside the station?
My graphic design work keeps me pretty busy, but when I’m not doing that I’m going to shows, digging up music, and DJing every now and again.

What does KCRW mean to you?
As I mentioned before, I grew up in Fresno where I didn’t feel like there were many people with the same interests as myself. So to come to a place where there are a lot of like-minded folks, though it may seem like a small thing, is a real blessing to me and I feel grateful every time I get to come in and volunteer beside such a dedicated group of people who are passionate about the work they do. It’s what makes the station great and thank you to everyone for letting me be a part of it.

No, Deane, thank YOU for coming to LA and making it to KCRW. If there are more like you in Fresno, please, send them our way. We’ll be waiting because there’s only so much of you to go around!

She is a gal of few words, but why waste time on those when you’re busy rolling up your sleeves and getting down to the nitty-gritty of awesomeness? From the day she set foot in the basement, Karene was not shy about jumping in to save the day – and save it she has!

Where did you grow up and are you an only child?
I grew up in LA, and I have one younger brother, Chris.

What is your current occupation?
Apart from volunteering, I work at a small business in the valley. I get to do a lot of interesting things for my job, such as traveling around, but a lot of my day to day work involves photography and photo editing.

What is your fantasy occupation?
My fantasy occupation would be to have a music show on KCRW, of course!

When did you first discover KCRW?
I first discovered KCRW when I was around 7 or 8. It was usually on during our drive to and from school. And as a teenager living without cable TV, I’d always have it on when I was at home. Thanks to Nick Harcourt I will always claim that I knew of the the Shins two years before Garden State came out. So there!

How did you find your way to our station for volunteering?
I always wanted to volunteer, but I was focused on following the traditional going to college and getting a job path. But once I realized that wasn’t going to work out, I thought I ought to give volunteering a go. So I sent in an application and a little bit later, here I am!

What’s your current volunteer position and how long have you been at it?
I work the front desk and I try to sub for music shows as often as I can. I’ve been doing it for about 8 months or so.

Favorite volunteer moment?
I can’t really pick a favorite, but I always enjoy being in the studio during the shows.

If you could get on the mic and say one sentence on the air, what would it be?
I’m not sure. I’d love to have a silly catchphrase though… or something like… “And we now continue with our two hour long tribute to Royksopp.”

What song have you hit repeat on lately?
Todd Terje – Inspector Norse. So catchy and happy!

Favorite book, movie?
It’s so hard to pick a favorite, I’m currently listening to The Happiness Advantage, which has been really interesting. As far as movie, I can’t really say. I rarely watch movies. But I can probably offhandedly recite all the Arrested Development episodes.

Favorite thing to do outside the station?
I like to play around with my camera and study languages (whenever I can). But for now, I’d like to consider myself a devout bedroom DJ.

What does KCRW mean to you?
Growing up around KCRW, it means great deal to me. As a kid, it was my escape from suburbia and my introduction to all types of music. It always made a great impression on me, and I still can’t believe I get to be a part of the station. It may sound cheesy, but it’s true.

Karene, what can we say? For every volunteer that has ever coughed, sneezed, had an emergency, or decided to play hooky, you’ve been there to keep the radio machine well-oiled and at full steam. You are the consummate volunteer’s volunteer and we thank you heartily.

There are afternoons when multiple stories are breaking at once, and that means phone calls to make, audio to edit, and scripts to write – and the clock is ticking. Then again, there are sloooow news days when you really need to scavenge for stories worth telling. Amor manages to handle all of it with a giant smile and her unstoppable friendliness. In a matter of months she’s learned how to use the edit rooms, conduct and then cut interviews, and write news scripts like a pro. And she balances it all with a full course load at Santa Monica College and a part-time job as a coffee barista. Next time you see her in the newsroom, say hi! –Avishay Artsy, KCRW’s All Things Considered News Producer

Where did you grow up and are you an only child?
I grew up in Los Angeles and I am the oldest of 5 kids.

What is your current occupation?
I am a part time student at SMC studying English and hoping to transfer this Fall. I am also a barista at Peet’s Coffee and Tea.

What is your fantasy occupation?
I would love to work as a producer on NPR working on segments about mental and physical health. I want a career that allows me to combine my interest for health and science with my passion for communication. I also want to work in a filed that helps me to continue learning everyday and to help others reach their goals.

When did you first discover KCRW?
I grew up listening to KCRW as a kid. My dad and grandmother are avid NPR listeners, so I would frequently hear KCRW or KPCC while being dropped off at school. It wasn’t until I had my own car that I found myself listening to KCRW to and from school on my own. When I was 16, I visited KCRW for the first time with a friend. At the time I hadn’t considered a career in radio or communications, but I developed a love for the work that was done there.

How did you find your way to our station for volunteering?
Last April, I saw KCRW at the SMC Internship fair and signed my name onto the contact list. In September, I received an email asking interested applicants to submit their application and resume for an internship in the Fall. After the interview, I got a chance to meet the Afternoon News Producer Avishay Artsy. I have been working at the news department ever since.

What’s your current volunteer position and how long have you been at it?
I am a news producer intern and have been with KCRW since October.

Favorite volunteer moment?
The moment I learned how to give a successful interview, edit the sound byte, and write a reader myself. I’ve loved how much I have been able to learn so much in such a short period of time. Also, I had the chance to visit NPR in DC this past January because Avishay Artsy set up a meet-and-greet with a producer there. It was amazing! I would never have had that opportunity if it wasn’t for KCRW’s help. I am really grateful to KCRW for helping me to become a better writer, interviewer, and more focused on my goals. I think that the work being done at KCRW is important. For some listeners, it is their main source of news and we give all the facts without all the fluff.

If you could get on the mic and say one sentence on the air, what would it be?
Thank you for listening and supporting the work that is done at KCRW. The people that work here are dedicated, intelligent and driven people. They each work very hard to produce shows that are original and thoughtful.

What song have you hit repeat on lately?
Shake It Out by Florence and Machine and Pitseleh by Elliot Smith.

Favorite book, movie?
I love Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri. She has a gift of crafting stories in an elegant and beautiful way. My favorite movie right now is Les Miserables. I cried about 5 or 6 times throughout the film. I wish that were an exaggeration.

Favorite thing to do outside the station (hobbies, recreation, etc.)?
Eating copious amounts of dark chocolate, watching Downton Abbey, hiking, reading health blogs and watching really bad reality shows on Netflix.

What does KCRW mean to you?
I am learning something new everyday at KCRW, which is why I have loved the opportunity that I have been given to intern there. As a news intern, I need to educate myself about what is happening in LA everyday and how it affects people. I am also learning how to ask the right questions and trying to understand different points of view. Not to mention all the technology that goes into running a radio station. In a nutshell, KCRW has really opened my eyes to the field of work that I want to continue to pursue.

To KCRW, Avishay and Amor exemplify the perfect symbiosis between producer and intern. When it comes to taking on interns, it requires trust, patience, and the ability to delegate on the part of a company’s staffers. Equally important, there must be a solid supply of interns with the smarts, curiosity, and follow-through to take on and complete new tasks – enter Amor Yates! Thanks for hanging with us!
