Automating a Business to Gain More Leads or Customers

Both for-profit and non-profit organizations depend on gaining new leads and/or customers to stay in business.

For profit businesses need the sales and revenue from new customers to stay in business while non-profits need new customers to join their cause or spread the word about their mission.

Marketing / Sales automation address these needs directly by increasing the efficiency or ease of acquiring, tracking, managing or communicating with new leads, prospects or customers!

No plans survive first contact with the enemy … Helmuth von Moltke the Elder (the German field marshal at the start of the First World War).

Do you struggle with making decisions like “should you move to another state or another country” or “should you change jobs or careers” because of the fear of making the wrong choice?

For most real-life decisions, tossing a coin in a wishing won’t cut it! To make better decisions keep in mind the techniques introduced in this article.

Please, keep in mind that the more you apply these techniques, the better your decision making skills will be.

Begin With A Positive Mental Attitude

Without a positive mental attitude, your chances of success are slim or next to zero.

You can overcome any opposition, hindrances or negative feedback with a positive attitude.

However, you also don’t want to think so positively that you run forward with half-baked solutions that are not going to bring cut-it!

Get The Facts Right

Get the rights facts but do not try and obtain only data that backs your decision.

In other words, consider all the available data even if it’s contrary to your preferred course of action.

For example, if you’re trying to decide on a college to attend, first obtain data from your choice of colleges.

Data like the annual enrollment numbers, the curriculum outline for your major, and the cost can help you to decide on the best college to meet your educational goals.

Listen To Your Intuition

Consider your “gut feelings” because it can protect you from the hurt and harm of bad decisions.

You may not always be able to put your gut feelings into words, but if “something just doesn’t feel right“, then it probably isn’t!

It’s best to trust your intuition especially if it is making you persistently or inexplicably uneasy about a course of action.

Always Have A Backup Plan

No matter how carefully a project is planned, something may still go wrong with it!

Why? Because no-plan survives contact with reality (the enemy) … Helmuth von Moltke, German field marshal.

Prepare a Plan A (your main course of action) and a Plan B (your backup or contingency plan) because “if your Plan A doesn’t work, your Plan B probably will!”

You may never need to use your contingency / backup plan, but since even the best made plans go awry, be ready to execute Plan if Plan A fails.

Brainstorm. Consider All Your Options

Brainstorm and consider as many alternative ideas as possible because the most outrageous idea that comes out of brainstorming may be the best solution.

I once had a college assignment where we had to help come up with a name for our small group that I was a part of.

Having one male and four females in the group, I jokingly said, “Let’s call ourselves ‘Four Ladies and a Man!’” After the laughter died down, even with other suggestions, we went with my idea.

You may now start making better decisions quickly by applying the five techniques outlined in this article.

Volunteer To Bridge the “Lack of Experience” Gap

Researching job descriptions can help you identify any experience that you may be lacking.

And any experience you lack may be gained through volunteering!

Even if you don’t receive recognition or compensation for volunteering, you should do it anyway.

Why?

Because volunteering shows your potential employer that you are productive and enthusiastic professional.

After you complete your volunteer assignment, update your resume immediately.

The sooner your resume shows you have the qualifications that a company is looking for, the sooner you will be receiving interview invitations.

Maintain a Well-Written Resume

Your resume must always be well written and error free.

Keep in mind that a poorly written resume may prevent you from getting an interview invitation even when you are qualified for the job!

Make sure to have someone with good writing skills to review your resume.

Even if you have to pay someone to review your resume, it will be worth it

Why? Because an error-free resume will always receive more attention over a poorly written resume.

Identify Your Employment Options

Before you apply for a job, make sure you can perform in the role you are applying for.

For example, for business analyst jobs you may be asked to:

  • Analyze requirements and determine their impact on stakeholders
  • Advice your organization over their corporate strategies
  • Help your organization develop new business processes, procedures or systems

In this example, if your background is in Information Technology (IT), then a business systems analyst position may be a better fit for you.

Applying for jobs that you will succeed at instead of every job that seems to match your profile may help you get a job quicker or with less stress!

Once you decide on what you want to do, you can go to job sites to discover how many posted job descriptions match your ideal job.

Also use this information to highlight the skills and experience on your resume that proves you are the perfect fit for the job.

Take Advantage of Employee-Referral Programs

Take advantage of any employee-referral programs your company provides.

Keep in mind that employee-referral programs are designed to draw attention to your resume as quickly as possible.

Some employee-referral programs are a win-win outcome for both you and those who refer you (your employer).

Whenever this is the case, the employees who referred you will receive a cash award, special recognition or some other type of benefit for helping you get a job!

How To Ace Your Business Analyst Job Interviews

Receiving a business analyst interview invitation only “opens the door” to getting a job. Acing the job interview will walk you through that door to actually get a business analyst job.

How do you prepare?

Following are six basic questions along with their answers that you will get during the job interview.

Be sure to modify each answer to match your experience, skills, competencies and personality to avoid sounding like a memorized script.

Explain how you would handle a requirement that is too costly?

Once I discover that a requirement is not feasible, I would share my findings with the stakeholder using the appropriate cost vs. benefit analysis model.

I would first clarify the actual requirement. Then I’ll explain why the requirement may not be feasible from a cost perspective with the relevant Project Sponsor, Project Manager or Stakeholder.

Cost prevents many a requirement from being implemented.

That’s why I will also document my estimated cost vs. benefit analysis and, then leave the final decision up to the Project Manager(s) or Project Sponsor.

2. How do you manage technology vs. business process challenges as a business analyst?

I recognize that finding a balance between technology constraints and business requirements always is challenging. However, I will be successful at finding or keeping that balance!

Since technology is often employed to meet solutions that meet business requirement, I always keep an eye out for technology vs. business process tradeoffs!

Here a few examples of how I’ve done that in the past …

The reality is that not all business requirements need a 100% technology driven solution and vice versa.

3. Can you explain the difference between Quality Control and Quality Assurance?

The terms quality control and quality assurance are often used interchangeably, however, in my opinion, there are some difference between the two.

Quality Assurance (QA) focuses on the developmental stage of the product or service while ensuring that the requirements are being met.

QA as it is popularly referred to; are methods or procedures used in produce products or services that are free from errors.

Quality Control however, focuses on helping products or services meet the customers specifications and while being free of defects!

As a business analyst, I may be responsible for both the Quality Assurance and Quality Control efforts for products or services based on documented and validated business requirements.

4. Describe the methods you use to gather requirements from end users?

I start by using the Zachman Framework method, i.e. the what, where, when, why, who, and how questions to interview users. I continue using this method to determine the main requirements.

I can also use prototypes or mockupss to demonstrate products to stakeholders. These demonstrations may help determine requirements analysis was done correctly.

5. As a Business Analyst, what would you say is your greatest weakness?

As a business analyst, working with software development technologies is my greatest area of improvement as I have to understand enough of the technical terms used during the Software Development Life Circle (SDLC).

6. As a Business Analyst, what would you say is your greatest strength?

My biggest strength is my verbal /written communication as well as my leadership skills.

As you modify these answers as they relate to your experience and competencies, prepare at least two examples and practice them over and over again. The more you practice your responses, the more comfortable you will be responding to these questions at your job interview. Best wishes!

Data Analyst vs. Database Administrator Jobs, Which Is Better?

Database Administrators are the Information Technology (IT) professionals responsible for keeping a database up to date and running.

Their responsibilities include: writing scripts and updating the database, keeping the database running 24/7, and backing up the database.

Database analysts are IT Professionals responsible for analyzing and reporting on the data in a database.

Their duties include reviewing the database design as well as the relationships between the tables in a database and analyzing / reporting trends, patterns and insights.

With this in-mind, let’s take a quick look at the differences, similarities and areas of shared responsibilities:

  1. Database Backups, Data Loss and Disaster Recovery

    The Database Administrator (DBA) is primarily responsible for performing database backups, preventing data loss, recovering databases from backups or advocating and implementing disaster recovery plans.

    Unlike the DBA, the Database Analyst (Data Analyst) is not burdened with any of these types of tasks except in smaller organizations where lines of responsibility are blurred because their is no real division of labor!

  2. Data Reporting

    Organizations that employ both a DBA and a Data Analyst will defer to the Data Analyst for their reporting needs which may include preparing SQL Query based reports in; HTML / CSV / PDF / Excel or using sophisticated / enterprise reporting tools like Crystal Reports, Business Objects, SQL Server Reporting Services, etc.

  3. Salary, Wages and Income

    The Database Administrator (DBA) role usually goes to highly experienced IT Professionals as such, it is not unusual for a Database Administrator to earn upwards of six (6) figures.

    Database analyst positions on the other hand may be staffed by less experienced IT Professionals and as such may not earn quite as high an income as a database administrator (DBA).

  4. Learning Curve / Level of Challenge

    Without a doubt, it is much harder to be a DBA than to be a data analyst. That is not because the data analyst’s job is easy but because there is a lot more that goes into being a DBA!

    For example, a DBA can perform the tasks traditionally assigned to a database analyst and in addition, also perform additional duties related to:

    • Data Security
    • Database Design Standards
    • SQL Query Performance Tuning
    • Database Uptime and Reliability
    • Data Extraction, Transformation and Loading
    • Database Server Configuration / Management
    • … and lots more!

    The Database Administrator (DBA) is the resident database expert and SQL Guru and the DBA job title is only available to highly experienced database professionals.

  5. Database Design & Development

    While the DBA will be in charge of enforcing his / her database design standards and managing multiple enterprise databases and/or data warehouses some of which may spawn hundreds of tables, the Data Analyst may be in charge of designing the database for a single application.

    The data analyst may design and develop a database subject to the standards and guidelines set by the DBA for the entire organization.

  6. SQL Query Writing

    While Data Analysts are responsible for and must be competent at writing the queries used in their line of work, the DBA may also review and provide them with feedback from time-to-time.

    Data analysts may also have to ask for or incorporate the DBA’s feedback over long-running / poorly performing queries.

As you can see, the Data Analyst job is excellent role for entry-level, junior, mid-level or even senior database / IT professionals while the DBA’s job is almost, always designed for highly skilled, expert senior-level database / IT professionals!

Guidelines For Improving Your Business Analyst Career

Before you can improve your business analyst career, you must answer some questions like; which direction should you go and what steps should you take to get there?

If these questions aren’t answered at the beginning of your career, you may wrongly focus on skills or competencies that will take you in the opposite direction of your goals!

To help answer these questions, I have provided you with some guidelines that will come in handy as you move forward in your business analyst career.

Consider The Options Before Going Down A Path

If you don’t know or analyze the options available to you, you won’t be able to plan your career correctly.

Knowing the options available to you will help you make better decisions for your career, especially if you’re a new business analyst.

For example, you may plan to be a junior, mid-level or senior business analyst. Or go beyond the business analyst role altogether and become a chief information officer or chief executive officer!

Business Analyst Job Titles Are Not Created Equal

Since business analyst career titles don’t carry the same responsibilities across industries, there’s no fast-and-easy way to define each business analyst job title.

For example, having more systems knowledge may place you in a senior job title of business analysis at one company, but in a junior job title at another.

So, finding out what’s really required for any job title you choose, will help you make better plans and / or reach your career goals.

Make Your Business Analyst Career Work

Once you decide which business analyst career path you want to take, apply the following guidelines to get there:

  • Build more expertise by gaining experience whenever possible. Each experience will challenge and increase your competencies as a business analyst. As your competencies improve, so will your expertise or chances of career success increase!
  • Add more value to your career by switching your industry. Switching your career to another industry can provide you with the cross-functional opportunity needed to gain new perspectives, competencies, horizons, skills and / or contexts.
  • Add more value to your current employer. Each time you add value, you make an impact that can open the doors to new opportunities.

    For example, if you discover a way to get a product out to customers in half the original time-to-market, you will add significant value to your business.

    You will also have made the kind of impact that gets you noticed, seen and heard by the management / executive team!

What Drives Your Business Analyst Career?

To succeed on your business analyst career path, you must:

  • stay focused
  • be passionate and
  • be self-disciplined.

Staying focused helps you overcome any challenge you may face as you progress in your career.

Being passionate about your goals and the steps you take to get there, gives you the drive you need to succeed.

Self-discipline helps you take one step at a time and it also gets time to work for you instead of against you.

Let Go of Boring Business Analyst Work

Let go of some of the basic, routine, mundane, repetitive, boring work that you’re doing so you can free the time to learn or do more advanced work because that will always move you closer to your career goals!

Don’t let others push you back into entry-level business tasks that you have mastered and handed-over to others less experienced.

Why? Because hanging on to work that you’ve already mastered will stop you from growing or hinder you from moving to your career goals.

But don’t give up! With the next five proven job interview tips, you can confidently prepare for your next IT job interview.

Dressing for Success Can Make a Difference

The phrase, “dress for success” is just as relevant today as it was ten years ago. A good appearance does two things:

  • shows you are a professional

  • makes a great first impression

Don’t allow a company’s business casual dress code to stop you from dressing professionally for your job interview because your appearance shows that you take your IT job search seriously.

Attire you should avoid wearing to the IT job interview are jeans, short skirts, low cut blouses, tight-fitting slacks, or flip flops.

Dress one step up from what you think the interviewer will wear. Being professionally dressed is better than taking the risk of dressing too casually or inappropriately.

Take dressing for success seriously. All things being equal between you and another candidate, professional dress could be the deciding factor.

So, you want to be the one that the interviewer thinks about when deciding on whom to fill the IT position.

Put Good Listening Skills into Practice

Good listening skills must be demonstrated during your IT job interview. Poor listening skills show the interviewer that you are not a good fit for the IT position.

To help you better exhibit listening skills during the IT job interview, use the following tips:

  1. Don’t allow your mind to wander. Stay focused on what the interviewer is saying.

    think you heard instead of what you actually heard.

  2. Respond only after you’ve heard the complete question. No matter how tempted you are, never interrupt the interviewer.

    You want to come across as focused and attentive instead of rude, anxious or impatient.

  3. Take notes when being asked questions. Writing down key points will give you a quick outline of the question.

    Notes will help you to see how to prepare a logical, clear response to the question.

  4. Don’t be afraid to ask for additional information. If you have missing information, you will not answer the question properly.

    Be sure to tell the interviewer why you are asking for more information, to show how it relates to the question.

A partial or unrelated answer to interview questions show your listening skills aren’t what they should be.

Responding correctly to questions through good listening skills, increase your chances for getting a IT job offer.

What to Say When You Don’t Know What to Say

Getting nervous / uncomfortable when you don’t know the answer to an interview question is normal. The good news is you’re not expected to have an answer to every question that’s asked.

Admitting you don’t know the answer to the interview question is the best solution.

Saying that you don’t know is far better than creating an answer to the interview question.

Making up an answer won’t be good for you, especially if or when the truth is found out.

Honest people are what organizations want, even if they don’t have an answer to every question during the IT job interview. Admitting you don’t know the answer to an interview question places you in a better position than someone who makes up an answer.

Display Clarity of Thought

Present your thoughts in a clear and concise manner during your IT job interview. This trait reveals your ability to communicate effectively.

For example, don’t just give a solution to a problem-solving interview question, but explain how you reached it!

Break down the problem into bite sizes, analyze the specifics, and come up with creative ways to solve it.

Clearly explaining how you process ideas / thoughts causes you to stand out during the IT job interview.

When the Interviewer Wants Additional Information

Don’t repeat the same answer if the interviewer asks for additional information!

Give a different answer to show you can look at problems from another angle.

Prepare by creating responses to a problem that could happen. For example, come up with ways to resolve a problem when you are working with a small budget or limited staff.

These five proven tips to improve your interview skills will do you no good if you don’t put them into practice.

However, if you practice these proven techniques, your next IT job interview could be the last hurdle you jump before landing your dream IT job!

For example, if you have a passion for solving problems or you are the “go-to person” when there is an issue, you already have some of the intrinsic qualifications sought after in business analyst professionals.

You may ease your mind by reviewing some of the intrinsic personality traits sought after in business analyst professionals.

Are You A Problem Solver?

If so, you may also translate your innate budgeting skills to handling the resources provided to you as a business analyst.

As a business analyst, your budgeting skills may be used to plan for and/or align the resources allocated to your project effectively.

These resources may include the teams, users, and stakeholders that you interact with from the start to finish of a project.

Are You Good At Asking Questions?

If you are the type of person who seems to know; “what questions to ask, when to ask questions and who to ask“, then you already have a skill required for business analyst jobs.

One of the most important questions you may find yourself asking as a business analyst … is the question: “WHY?“.

When you develop a reputation or even the ability to answer tough questions, you become an invaluable “go-to person” in your organization!

Do You Have Any Professional Skill / Expertise?

Do you take the time to develop or build your technical skills? Whether it is as a software developer, data analyst or a programmer, you can also use these same skills in a business analyst position!

Your self-development may include building on your experience as a project manager, SME, recruiter or sales representative.

Your current professional skills may come in handy because different industries / domains require different backgrounds for their business analyst positions.

One of the professionals I interviewed and recommended for hiring as a Business Analyst had an extensive background in Sales / Business Development.

This gentleman was consequently hired as a business analyst to help facilitate conflict resolution, negotiation and requirements elicitation with mid-level to upper level management!

Are You An Avid Note Taker?

If you receive comments on your journaling / note-taking skills because you review notes from 10 months ago to address a topic at hand, then you have a strength that is useful in business analyst positions!

For example, you can save time at meetings by not discussing something that your notes prove is no longer practical.

As a business analyst, your note-taking skills will not only help you save time, but also help resolve conflicts, re-discover past decisions and/or and provide additional documents to help with requirements gathering / documentation!

Do You Enjoy Making a Difference?

Do you want to; change the world or make a difference with your skills?

As a business analyst you may make a difference by contributing ideas, reducing conflict, solving problems, improving a process, making a task easier or even saving time.

Whenever you effect positive or effective changes, you are doing good as a business analyst.

Keep in mind that it doesn’t matter how small or large the problems you solve are because the folks you help will appreciate the improvements.

Can You Wear Two Hats; At The Same Time?

If you have the ability to see both the big picture as well as the details, you have the capacity to become a successful business analyst.

Your ability to see the big picture helps you guide the project in the right direction. While, your ability to be detail-oriented helps you not to lose track of those tasks / things that appear to be small, but yet are important!

Are You An Ambitious Person?

Ambition is one of those traits that will help you do what needs to be done to get the right results.

Armed with ambition you can, for example, overcome the tough times that come when a “Project Sponsor” or stakeholders force unpalatable changes to you project!

There are lots of unchartered, unpredictable waters that business analysts have to navigate because they have to work with a lot of people!

So, bring plenty of ambition to help you handle the challenges of the business analyst profession.

Succeed As A Business Analyst Already!

Now that you see how you can apply your natural, innate or current personality traits to your business analyst profession, what’s holding you back from succeeding at your BA job?

Consider that in the U.S., the average salary of a business analyst professional is $80,000 and you may make even more once you are established or become confident in your skills.

By now you should be convinced that you have what it takes to succeed as a business analyst. If so, what should be your next step?

Research business analysts job postings to discover how much your skills match the job positions already! If you discover any gaps between what’s required and your current skills, you may shift focus to getting your skills gap met through training and and/or coaching.

Apply the personality traits mentioned in this article and in little to no time, you will find yourself succeeding as a professional business analyst!

I would encourage you to learn computer programming because it is a rewarding career that is open to all regardless of age, gender or background. 

Here are some of the reasons why “learning computer programming” is a good decision for anyone who is sincerely interested in the career …

Computer Programmers Are In High Demand 

There is a higher demand for computer programmers with specialized programming skills in languages like CSharp or Visual Basic.NET than there is a supply of skilled or trained computer programmers in these programming languages.

Having said this, I want to stress that not every programming language is in high-demand.

So, if you want to be marketable, you must focus on learning only those programming skills that are in high demand … like those that I just mentioned.

Computer Programming Is A Merit-based, Skill Driven Career

Computer programming is more about your skills than it is about your age, gender, race, education or any other discriminatory factor!

So, don’t focus on the reasons why you won’t get hired, instead, focus on becoming a highly skilled computer programmer and you will be OK.

Yes, I know that there are careers where advancement is based on looks, age, cronyism or any number of arbitrary factors.

But computer programming is not one of those because as a programmer, your advancement, success, employment depends on your ability to create and/or deliver tangible assets in the form of writing code / software programs.

Computer Programming Offers Flexible Lifestyles

You have multiple lifestyle options as a computer programmer. You may work as a freelance programmer for example (assuming that you don’t want to work in someone’s office) or work as W2 consultant / 1099 independent contractor or work as a salaried, full-time employee!

This means that you have the freedom of choosing what works best for you based on where you are in life.

For example, if you are a stay at home mum or a retiree, you may choose the independent contractor option and if you want good medical benefits above everything else, you may choose the full-time, salaried option!

Computer Programming, The Number One (#1) Job / Career Choice

A recent survey states that computer programming is going to be the number one (#1) job in terms of employment postings in 2013.

This means that if anyone is going to hire you for any job … it is most likely to be as a computer programmer.

Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth! and Don’t stand idly by on the sidelines while one of the greatest professional opportunities passes you by!

Computer Programming Experience Is Highly Valued

As a computer programmer, your age can work for you instead of against you because the more experience you have, the higher you can get paid in the computer programming industry.

So, if you are 41 years old and you start learning to be a computer programmer, you will have ten (10) years of experience at the age of 51 which still works in your favor!

Because computer programming languages are constantly updated, your experience in previous / older versions of a language along with experience in the current versions will always stand you in good stead as you can be hired for the old or new versions of the language or even … to work on both the old and new versions of a programming language at the same time!

Learn Programming Already! 

It is never too late to pursue a career that you are passionate about because if you don’t follow your heart’s desires, interests or passion, what else will you do with your time or what then will you do with your life?

A Review of Impact Analysis for Business Analysts

You have heard that hindsight is 20-20 but what you will also learn in this article is that insight can be equally as effective because it helps you see the impact of changes before they are implemented.

Face it; as a business analyst, you have experienced changes in software features, systems or business procedures that created confusion or hindered your ability to do your job.

Therefore, you understand the anxiety or frustration of users whose job duties will be impacted by major changes in their systems, right?

With that in mind, one of the best techniques for discovering the possible impact of changes to a system before they are implemented is Impact Analysis!

What Is Impact Analysis?

Impact Analysis is a tool for brainstorming, analyzing or determining the full cost, benefit or impact of proposed changes to a system.

As a brainstorming technique, impact analysis can help determine possible future issues after a project’s implementation as well as help discover the best solution based on a complete understanding of the cost and benefit of each possible solution.

So, as a tool, impact analysis helps you discover and understand the negative affects of alterations / changes to a system will have on an organization.

Impact Analysis As A Risk Management Tool

Impact analysis also helps you evaluate the real-world consequences of proposed projects and ensures that these consequences are manageable after the project is approved and implemented.

As a business analyst, Impact Analysis will help you determine whether it is really in the best interests of your organization to go forward with a particular project … all things considered!

Impact Analysis may also be used by a business analyst (BA), to develop an effective contingency plans as it allows a business analyst to see possible consequences before encountering them on the project.

And yes, a well-developed contingency plan will help you prepare for or handle problems caused by the alterations or changes you make to your systems.

Remember that without Impact Analysis, the changes you are implementing as a business analyst will introduce an unplanned-for or unforeseen sea of problems that can cause your well-intentioned project to fail!

First Step – Start With A Team

Honesty, you will need both the support and expertise of a reliable and experienced team with diverse experience or background from different departments.

This is important because having the right team will help you quickly or more completely identify all the possible consequences of changes to the system under consideration.

Once you put a team together, take the following additional steps for your Impact Analysis:

1. Be Ready for The Team

To help expedite decisions across your team, make sure your team has access to relevant information ready and handy. Also make ensure that team members thoroughly understand the problem you are solving, your changes / solutions and the project that puts it all together.

2. Give Affected Users A Voice

Make sure that users who are going to be affected by the proposed solutions are adequately represented at your impact analysis meetings. Having the right users involved will give you more real-world data or insight than plain speculating would.

3. Evaluate the Impact

Once everyone and everything that the changes impact have been identified, it’s time to go ahead and examine in detail all the negative / positive impacts of the project. This analysis should also include the possible extent and size of the impact.

4. Create A Contingency Plan

Finally, decide if you will still go ahead with the project based on a cost analysis, i.e. an analysis of how much it will take to maintain the project after it is implemented.

If you do decide to go ahead with the project, create a contingency plan for unforeseen issues that may arise as the changes are implemented.

Other things that you may include in your Impact Analysis are:

  • · Identify and list all the actions needed to manage each possible consequence.

  • · When multiple changes are being implemented as a project, give your team / impacted users the ability to rate or vote on each change by either accepting or rejecting individual changes.

  • · The concept of change is difficult to handle for most. So, consider introducing each change in a way that gets a “buy-in” instead of negative feedback.

Adopting Impact Analysis as one of your tools will help your organization/ team reduce or prevent project failure as well resource wastage.

Your team / organization will also experience project success on a more consistent basis and finally as a business analyst, you will be able to reduce or even eliminate hindrances affecting your users’ jobs after the changes have been implemented.

As you can see, adopting impact analysis will not only help you career as a business analyst, but it will also help your users and your organization.

Software Developer Careers Now Require Database Development Skills!

Computer programming is a fast-paced career so, if you prefer a sedate lifestyle, then the database developer career will be the better career option for you.

  1. Learning Curve: Computer programming has a higher learning curve (takes longer to learn) than database development.

Hello,

Your Software and SQL Boot Camp sound great and all. You also stated that a IT job is practically guaranteed when one becomes a Microsoft.Net Software Developer!

However, Dice discussions portray a very bleak picture.

They include outsourcing, Indian countries taking jobs pennies on a dollar, programmers with 20 yrs experience being laid off and unable to find work, people with various degrees not getting hired, etc.

The only ones that seem to get hired are the ones who will take minimal pay. Basically 95% of the discussions say that IT dead and will only get worse over time.

What’s your view on this?

Is this a reality check for aspiring programmers?

Will it still be worth the time and effort to learn these skills?

Is Outsourcing Really Depleting The Pool of IT Available Jobs?

Do you believe that many of the available Information Technology jobs have been outsourced or are about to be outsourced from the US?

In case you are wondering? I don’t see any evidence to support the views that Information Technology jobs are drying up or that IT Professionals are having a harder time finding jobs because they are being outsourced to other countries!

The evidence I see actually points the other way:

IT professionals including Software Developers and Computer Systems Analysts (Business Analysts?) are amongst the most in-demand professionals in the USA.

How Successful Is Outsourcing?

Outsourcing hasn’t been 100% successful as the hype surrounding it suggests.

For example, there are many outsourced jobs that are being pulled back to the US because they were executed poorly because of language barriers, challenges with managing teams on different time zones, the inability to translate business requirements accurately and a host of other issues.

In a nutshell, it turns out that a lot of the outsourcing talk is just hype and many companies are realizing that too!

Worrying About Outsourcing Is Unproductive!

Outsourcing is a global phenomena that affects probably all professions and careers!

For example, many patients are flying to India or South Africa for medical treatment because the cost of medical treatment in the USA is high when compared to the cost of medical treatment in countries like India / South Africa.

Now, does that mean that the medical profession in the US is threatened and Medical Doctors about to lose their jobs to outsourcing?

Far from it! Medical Doctors are still amongst the highest paid professions.

Worrying about “how outsourcing will affect Information Technology (IT) careers (business analysts, computer programmers, data analysts, project managers, etc.“) is not going to be helpful because: the cost of employing skilled professionals in any industry is cheaper in places like India and China than in the USA

So if the outsourcing hype is true, then everyone who has a job is also in-danger … and not just IT Professionals:-)

So, don’t worry about outsourcing, just focus on improving your skills and you will be OK.

Focus On Your Skills! If your skills are really good and anyone is going to lose their job, it won’t be you since you are one of the best in your profession!

The short, cut and dried answer is that both the systems analyst and the business analyst work on gathering, documenting, validating, managing requirements but the Business Analyst is more likely to do this with the objective of meeting business requirements while the Systems Analyst will is focused on analyzing, documenting or managing how the Information Technology (IT) software / hardware systems will be designed to meet functional / system requirements.

In a real-world project, the business analyst is more likely to be in charge of documenting the Business Use Case while the systems analyst will be responsible for documenting the Systems Use Case.

What’s In A Business Analyst Job Title Anyway?

Few things in life are as cut and dried as we hope them to be and the Systems Analyst / Business Analyst job titles blur the line all the time.

So in reality, the distinction between the Systems Analyst and Business Analyst isn’t as clear-cut as we would want!

In this article, we will explore together the roles of both types of analysts in detail to determine what the differences are, if any.

Keep in mind that the answers you discover can help you make career choices that are more in-line with your career goals and/or authentic self.

A Systems Analyst’s role varies from one company to the next. Sometimes there is a clear demarcation between the roles and responsibilities of a Systems Analyst vs. a Business Analyst and sometimes a company would use the names interchangeably.

Who Is A Systems Analyst?

A Systems Analyst is an IT professional who helps determine how a system can be designed to fulfill a business, company or organization’s needs and how business requirements will be implemented by software developers, software architects, database developers and/or network administrators.

The systems analyst therefore is that guy / gal who bridges the gap between business analysts (requirements) and the software developers (systems).

A Systems Analyst understands what a system needs to do after working with the business analyst on business requirements and then translates those requirements into documents that describe the capabilities or functions of hardware / software systems that will be needed to achieve that.

After doing this, the Systems Analyst will translate this into tasks or smaller steps using documents like Use Cases, UML or by drawing diagrams / charts.

These documents will describe how data gets into the system, how data will be processed by the system, how data will be saved or persisted by the system and finally, how efficiently the entire system will respond to the users of the system.

A Systems Analyst has to be comfortable designing / documenting how multiple software / hardware programs work together even when they are from different platforms, which leads to another role, the “Systems Integrator” role.

Finally, the analyst must be comfortable when advising senior management on the computer hardware / software to invest in, in-order to meet functional requirements.

So the Systems Analyst must be knowledgeable about how the entire Information Technology system functions together, i.e. the software, hardware, and networks.

Without this knowledge, the Systems Analyst will not be able to handle the responsibility of making appropriate analysis nor be able to make recommendations to assist the user, company or organization to operate more effectively and efficiently!

Who Is A Business Analyst?

The Business Analyst also plays a role in bridging gaps between business objectives / business needs and functional requirements.

The Business Analyst is involved from the project’s initiation, possesses a great understanding of the business processes, and communicates with both the user and technical teams in order to develop solutions per the user’s request.

The Business Analyst not only interviews users, but is also responsible for presenting the recommendations to stakeholders.

Business Analysts communicate with multiple levels within the organization in order to determine what the true needs are, the best ways to meet the needs / requirements (within a reasonable cost) before present their findings and solutions to management.

This means that a business analyst needs high quality communication, listening and presentation skills.

The Business Analyst still plays a role after a software system has been implemented. When, for example, there are additional changes that need to be made, the Business Analyst is responsible for validating those changes in the requirements.

Once the Business Analyst determines how the system operates at the functional requirements level, the Systems Analyst steps into the picture to determine how to get it done.

The goal for these two analysts working together is to satisfy the needs of the user and help the organization run more efficiently and effectively.

Keeep in mind that there will be lots of times when the functions of the Business Analyst and Systems Analyst overlap too.

Is There Any Overlap Between Systems Analysts and Business Analysts?

Depending on a company’s software engineering, Systems Analyst positions can also possess some of the same responsibilities as a Business Analyst. For example, the Systems Analyst may conduct interviews with the users as previously mentioned.

Some companies may combine the duties of the Business Analyst and Systems Analyst creating the role of Business Systems Analyst.

Some of the overlapping duties may include: business process documentation, support and inventory control analysis, development / implementation of efficient and cost-effective solutions and evaluating system specifications for business requirements.

The degree of the overlap of responsibilities between business analysts and systems analysts generally dependent upon the user and/or company’s needs.

Being able to distinguish the responsibilities between these two roles gives you a better understanding of business analysis job postings.

For example, you may determine which side a job posting leans from the emphasis placed on technical skills, programming skills, Screen Design / Prototyping skills, database / data analysis skills vs. the softer business skills!

So, is there really a difference between the roles of the System Analyst and the Business Analyst? Yes and No! It all depends on the organization, company, project or team!

Regardless of whether you are interested in Business Analyst or Systems Analyst positions, review each specific job description … and hear this, even if some of the duties, roles and responsibilities overlap, don’t let it hinder you from applying for the job, OK?

Build Your Career On Strengths Not Weaknesses

I have a cousin who was a skilled, talented artist in high school. Whenever he was painting a portrait, he would be playing his favorite rock band and be singing and dancing along … all at the same time!

One thing led to another, and his “artistic skills flourished into an entrepreneurial side business” and he started selling his portraits to supermarket chains!

Then it was time for college and his parents insisted on him choosing a career like “building engineering” that promised a stable income with lots of growth potentials vs. that of an entrepreneurial artist.

So, he dropped his childhood love and work in “drawing, painting and the arts” and became a college educated “Building Engineer”.

However, as the years rolled by, his passion, motivation and drive in all things termed work seemed to dry up and he started struggling with basic things that you probably take for granted like … “finding or keeping a job“.

So, what went wrong? My cousin is still struggling with his career in “building engineering” today though he was a successful teenager / young adult as an artist?

I feel strongly that my cousin missed his real life work because of a lack of understanding of “the strengths vs. weaknesses principle” or orient his career around his natural passion, strengths and motivations.

That is why I am dedicating the rest of this article to helping you, identify and work with your strengths instead of your weaknesses!

My friend, career success does not come from arbitrary college degrees or certifications (no matter how many) … except if those qualifications actually enhance your natural talents and abilities!

Knowing what you’re really good at doing vs. what you struggle with is key to evaluating or choosing your authentic work, vocation or career.

So, without much ado, here are three (3) simple exercise that will help you identify your strengths vs. your weaknesses…

Your strengths are talents or abilities “you naturally excel at“. They are dominant thinking, feeling and doing patterns that come naturally for you. So, you grow stronger and feel more energized when you spend time working on your strengths.

On the other hand, weaknesses seem to drain you and no matter how much you work at them, you don’t feel energized or improve much.

Because a weakness when utilized leaves your feeling like you were swimming against the current!

Another way to think of this is the answer to the question … how much do you enjoy being at your company’s parties?

If you enjoy being at corporate parties and you hang around until the lights are almost switched off on you then you are probably an extrovert in your natural habitat.

If on the other hand, you want to leave the party before everyone else is ready to leave or when you get home, you feel drained of energy … you are probably an introvert and parties are not your favorite thing!

For the rest of the article, I want you to do this … get a pen and paper and list your responses to the questions, ideas and tips presented.

  1. Identify The Activities You Enjoy Doing

    What are the activities and tasks that you feel deeply immersed-in, involved-in, or deeply engaged with when you perform them at home or work?

    This is in contrast to activities that you feel dis-engaged, distracted or disinterested with (your weaknesses) when you perform them?

    Don’t take too long to analyze these activities, instead, write down you initial and automatic response to the activity as you think about it

    Focus on activities that you feel happy about undertaking and / or leave you with a feeling of satisfaction.

    Make a list of these activities using verbs to describe your strengths such as planning, writing, developing, analyzing. A sentence in your list may look like … I feel fulfilled when I write a program or I am deeply immersed when I am painting.

  2. Step Away From Your Job Title For A Moment

    Our job titles do not always accurately identify all that we can do, are doing right now or are capable of doing.

    Rather, our “job titles” creates in us, the type of tunnel vision that imprisons our creativity and further entraps our talents. So, for this exercise, “visualize your career without the entrapment of your job title“!

    Having done that. identify and list past tasks and projects you excelled at, enjoyed doing, received compliments or positive feedback for, amazed others, received awards or recognition for.

    Make a list of these tasks or projects using sentences like … “nominated for the “best programmer award” because of a data capturing program that I wrote in ’08”.

  3. Evaluate Your Skills, Experience & Background

    As a career coach, I advice lots of folks some with multiple post-graduate degrees and of course certifications. I also know individuals who are successful at mid-level management, senior management and even C-Level / Executive positions without a college degree!

    In all these positions, what really matters is the individual’s ability to perform on the job. Performance matters because the prevailing wisdom in the Information Technology (IT) industry, is that … “your past performance is the best predictor of your future performance“!

    Some ignore this wisdom and put their focus on: “exams, certifications, college degrees, etc” which they hope to put on their resume and therefore … “magically guarantee their success (or so they think)“!

    But don’t you believe that junk! Success is a product of your performance, “passion / motivation / drive” and plain, unvarnished hard-work!

    Now, am I saying that you are only qualified for jobs / careers that you performed well in the past?

    No, certainly not! What I am saying is that you should evaluate your work / career for patterns of excellence because those provide you with insights on how to achieve future career success!

    So, for this exercise, I will show you how to evaluate your skills, experience and background (education, qualification, certifications) for evidence of strong performance.

    • What have you received praise for? List every activity that you’ve performed and for which you received praise.

      Now, answer the question: “What are the skills used in each of these activities?” Where you drawing, analyzing data, speaking in front of a group, etc.?

    • What tests / certifications have you taken? List every test / certification you’ve taken in the past.

      Now, answer the question: “Which of these tests / certifications can you use to perform a task or get some work done excellently / successfully?”.

    • Which skills / strengths are you ignoring? Many times, we are disconnected from the significance of our skills / strengths and here are a few examples to illustrate the point:

      1. As a customer service rep., you employ great communication, negotiation and customer service skills, yet you feel disqualified from applying to business analyst positions because in your mind, the paper qualifications you lack out-weigh the communication skills you will bring to the BA position.

      2. As a quality assurance personnel, you employ fantastic, code analysis and scripting skills, yet you feel disqualified from applying to computer programmer positions because in your mind, your lack of a formal computer science college degree out-weighs your natural ability to think logically which in reality is key to success in programming positions.

      3. As a receptionist , you spend the time in between phone calls creating power point presentations, preparing charts and graphs and other key reports for your management, yet you are convinced that becoming a data analyst is a pipe dream because of a lack of formal certifications!

Now you know another success principle: “truly sustainable success is founded upon identifying your strengths, developing them to the point of excellence and then putting each of them to work”” … “keep it not to yourself“, rather, “use it to help or serve others” and you will discover the secret of career success!

Starting out in the Information Technology (IT) industry, two of the most popular, marketable and portable skills are Relational Database Design / SQL Query Writing and Computer Programming / Web Software Development.

Considering the demand for each of these skills, a reader wants advice on which skill should be tacked first: computer programming vs. relational database development.

Advice: Which Do You Learn First: Database Design Or Computer Programming?

I will advice you to learn both computer programming and database design at the same time if you can afford the investment of time, effort and money but if you have to start with only one, learn database design + sql query writing first and here is why …

  1. Databases Vs. Programming Which Is Easier To Learn?

    The effort of learning relational databases may be separated into three (3) tasks:

    • Task 1 – learning relational database design and development

    • Task 2 – learning SQL Query Writing

    • Task 3 – learning database administration

    The task of learning a programming language like Microsoft .NET may be separated into:

    • Task 1 – learning web development (HTML, ASP.NET)

    • Task 2 – learning CSharp programming language

    • Task 3 – learning relational database design and development and sql query writing.

      NOTE: Task #3 comprises all of the tasks involved in learning Database Design + SQL Query Writing!

    Learning a relational database like SQL Server is definitely a simpler task than learning a programming language like Microsoft .NET CSharp … except if you are studying to become a Database Administrator (DBA).

  2. Can A Beginner Become A Database Administrator (DBA)?

    In the Information Technology (IT) industry, you may get a database job if you master relational database design, database development and sql query writing because skills qualify you for database developer jobs, report writing jobs, data analysis jobs, sql jobs. etc.

    You can also get any of these jobs without extensive industry experience because in the bigger list of technical skills, designing a database or writing sq queries is not really that hard, though it is very important!

    So, you don’t need five years of industry experience to get a database developer or sql query job, you just need to be very good at doing it, OK?

    On the other hand, you need prior, extensive database experience or database skills before anyone will consider you … and not to talk of interview or hire you for a database administrator (DBA) job because those responsibilities cannot be entrusted to someone without a lot of hands-on, chronological, industry experience!

  3. Can Programming and Databases Be Learned At The Same Time?

    You can definitely learn database design and development at the same time you are learning relational databases and here is why:

    Part of being a Software Developer aka Computer Programmer is designing the databases and writing the SQL Queries / stored procedures you will need for your application.

    In other words, when a company hires a computer programmer, they expect him / her to be very skilled at all aspects of database developmenbt except the administrative aspects which are usually trusted to the DBAs.

    While there may be multiple database developers / computer programmers working on a project, you usually only have one DBA or sometimes a few DBAs that will review all the stored procedures and databases and enforce standards before the application is deployed to a production environment.

    Learning both databases and a computer programming at the same time is feasible as long as you realize that you have to put in a lot of work as you are essentially mastering two career paths and areas of responsibilities at the same time.

In summary, learning computer programming, SQL Query Writing and Database Design + Development skills will open up your career to all sorts of corporate Information Technology (IT) Jobs.

The demand for database skills is high and the demand for computer programmers is also very high. So, combining skills from two (2) in-demand career paths can only work in your favor and make you more marketable.

Matt was an electrical engineer who had been a stay-at-home parent for four years.

When his youngest child started kindergarten, Matt wanted to return to work doing what he loved: Computer Programming with cutting edge technology.

KEY ISSUES

  • While Matt was at home, technology and software development processes had changed.

Over the next few months, Matt brought himself up to speed using our curriculum and taking advantage of my extensive hands-on coaching. Then he was ready to move to the next step. job search coaching.

Matt’s resume needed a major revision because it did not detail the computer programmer skills he used in a way that would catch the employer’s attention.

Also, his resume did not give much credit to the hot, in-demand technologies that he had used on previous projects.

As a result, Matt needed to list his experience in a way that demonstrated his passion and aptitude for technology and the fact that he was very results-oriented.

We (ITCareerCoach) introduced Matt to a couple of recruiters, and got him started on an interview coaching program.

After looking at the job descriptions of the positions he was considering and giving him an overview of what the potential employers would be looking for, we then oriented him on the technical recruiting process, skills testing, phone interviews, face-to-face interviews, code sample demonstrations etc.

ITCareerCoach coached Matt on the programming concepts that he needed to master and/or discuss off the top of his head in order to impress hiring managers. We also ran him through a two hour mock technical interview where we coached him on how to frame and phrase his answers.
