Archaeological evidence suggests that Kedah is the site of Peninsular Malaysia's oldest civilization. Before the sea route around the peninsula was firmly established, trade between India and China was conducted across the peninsular isthmus. One of the primary trading centers for this overland trade was a Hindu-Buddhist kingdom that flourished from the fourth to the seventh century in the Bujang Valley, just south of the peak of Gunung Jerai (and thus easily located by early Indian mariners). Like Malacca a thousand years later, the Bujang Valley civilization attracted a cosmopolitan population of merchants and traders, including Indians, Chinese, Achenese (from Sumatra), Burmese, and Arabs. With the arrival of Arab traders, Islam arrived on the Peninsula for the first time, though the most substantial cultural influence came from Pallava India.

As was the case with many of Malaysia's greatest trading civilizations, the Bujang Valley kingdom's prosperity made it an attractive target for outsiders. The region came under the influence of the Sumatran kingdom of Sri Vijaya in the 7th and 8th century, followed by a period during which Kedah was dominated by the Thai states to the north. Kedah's ancient civilization waned in importance by the 15th century, when Malacca assumed a more dominant role. The establishment of Islam in Kedah is due to Malacca's influence.

When Malacca fell to the Portuguese, the influence of its Sultanate over Kedah weakened. However, other powers soon asserted themselves in Kedah, including both the Portuguese and the rising Achenese, and by the end of the 18th century the Thai threat arose once more. Fearing renewed domination by its northern neighbours, Kedah appealed to the British for assistance. As inducements to a commitment, Kedah ceded first Penang (1796) and then the adjoining strip of coastal land (1800) to the British. Nonetheless, Kedah fell to the Thais in 1821. Thailand transferred their sovereignty to the British in 1909. With the exception of the period of occupation by the Japanese during World War II, Kedah remained under British influence until independence.

The Golf Course

As the only 4 star golf resort in the North, Cinta Sayang's championship 18-holes golf course strikes a glistening view from the first hole. Pleasant to look at because of its wide vistas, the course is as simple as we would like it to be but it is definitely deceptive when tried. Well manicured Serangoon grass gracing the green and tee boxes provides a luxuriant feel while Bermuda grass covers the fairway. PLACES OF INTEREST:
Pekan Rabu - literally means "Wednesday Market", is located in the middle of Alor Setar. It is well known among the local population and tourists from outside Kedah. Moreover, the fourth Malaysian Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir, was once a trader in Pekan Rabu.

Balai Besar - known as the "Great Hall", this impressive edifice is an excellent testimony of the pas historical and cultural relationship between Kedah and Thailand. Built in 1898, it is currently used by the Sultan for royal and state functions.

Menara Alor Setar (Telekom Tower) - this tower is a prominent and modern landmark that signifies the rapid development in the state of Kedah. It functions as both a telecommunications tower and a tourist attraction.

Rumah Kelahiran Mahathir - when visiting this place, you will be able to view items during his childhood, his schooldays, till the time he became a doctor. There are photos, furniture and other household items. You can even take a look at his old bicycle.

Lunas

Introduction
Lunas is a small town in Kedah just east of the border with Penang state. The latitude of Lunas correspond to Gurney Drive in George Town.

Three men were credited for founding the township of Lunas. They are Soon Ah Lee @ Baba Lee, Loh Boon Ghee and Lim Lean Teng. Together, these three men built the roads and shophouses as well as the school and temple. The town started life as tapioca and sago plantations. There was a jetty at the stream that runs through town. From there, barges can bring the tapioca and sago downstream. I believe the aforementioned stream is Sungai Kulim. Lunas, which means "keel" is thought to have gotten its name from this water-borne transportation.

When rubber was introduced in Malaya, Loh Boon Ghee received a contract from the European plantation companies to clear the land in Lunas to plant rubber sapplings. Loh brought his relatives from Swatow in China (it was in Fujian province at that time, but the border has since been moved and it is now in Guangdong province).

When the importance of rubber began to decline, so too was the fortune of Lunas. It remained a sleepy hollow until quite recently, when the construction of the Butterworth-Kulim Expressway once again brought visitors. Today Lunas is most famously associated with its duck rice. A few places worth exploring in Lunas include the Old Rubber Smokehouse, Soon Mansion and the Buddhist Hermitage. Other places to explore include the Hock Teik Soo Temple and Sri Maha Kuttakarai Muniswarar Alayam Temple.

How to go to Lunas
Lunas can easily be reached using the Butterworth-Kulim Expressway. Simply exit at the Lunas-Kulim Exit.

Bukit Kayu Hitam

Background
It is the main road crossing between Malaysia and Thailand and most long distance buses between the two countries use this checkpoint. The Thai checkpoint is officially known as the Sadao Immigration Checkpoint while the town immediately after the border is called Dannok.

There is not much of a town to Bukit Kayu Hitam (which locals like to refer to with its loose English translation "Black Forest") - just a few shops located on a side road off the main highway. Most commercial activity is actually centred at the busy duty-free shopping centre located between the Malaysian and Thai checkpoints.

Bukit Kayu Hitam is the northern starting point of the North-South Expressway which runs all the way south to Johor Bahru, passing through Kuala Lumpur.

Get around
The few places you need to go to in Bukit Kayu Hitam such as the immigration checkpoints, duty free complex, foodstalls, are quite far apart and walking may be a little inconvenient. Many people take short rides in normal taxis or motorcycle taxis, especially when they want to cross the border.

Relaxing Pleasures
Golfing at Black Forest Golf and Country Resort, an 18-hole par 72 championship golf course. It is located behind the duty free shopping complex in between the Malaysian and Thai immigration checkpoints. The golf clubhouse also has restaurant.

The Shopping Destination
Shopping at the Cergas Jaya Duty Free Shopping Ccomplex. It's a mid-sized shop with sporting good, toys, some clothes, groceries and the usual stock of liquor, make-up and cigerettes. For pricing comparison: 1 liter of Bacardi Rum - RM45, Malibu Rum - RM65, Absolut Citron - RM57. The store is supplied by the Malaysians, so those from the Thai side can find some interesting items.
Getting to Bukit Kayu Hitam
Those from Malaysia who want to only come here and NOT cross into Thailand should drive through Malaysian immigration and inform the officer that you only want to go to the duty free complex. He will issue you a pass which you should hold on to and return it when you go through immigration again after you finish shopping. Passports are not needed. Please note that you can only bring in duty free goods if you have left the country for 48 hours. However, many Malaysians just go to the complex to buy duty free items and hope they can pass Malaysian customs without them noticing. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Its your call. Of course, there is no problem if you are travelling onwards into Thailand or coming from there.

Getting there
By bus
To/from Thailand: For those heading to Hat Yai and other destinations in Thailand, you will have to cross the border into Sadao for connections. Please note that it is quite a distance to walk from the bus terminal on the Malaysian side to the Thai side of the border. Because of all this, it is much more convenient to take a bus directly to Hat Yai (or your Malaysian destination if coming from Hat Yai) rather than change buses at Bukit Kayu Hitam. Most long distance buses between Malaysia and Thailand use the Bukit Kayu Hitam-Sadao crossing but do not pick up passengers here.

To/from Malaysian destinations: Ekspres Bandar runs two direct buses daily between Bukit Kayu Hitam and Kuala Lumpur's Jalan Duta Bus Terminal. Tickets cost RM40. Buses leave near the Malaysian immigration complex.

There are many more options at Changloon (also spelled Changlun), 8km south of Bukit Kayu Hitam. Among the bus companies with direct links to Kuala Lumpur are Transnasional (Tel: +60-4-9241561), Etika Ekspres and Konsortium Bas Ekspres Semenanjung (Tel: +60-4-9241561). You will have to catch a taxi between Bukit Kayu Hitam and Changloon. From Changloon, you can also catch a local HBR Liner bus to Alor Star.

By taxi
Taxis congregate at several locations in Bukit Kayu Hitam, especially near the Malaysian checkpoint and the district council stalls in Bukit Kayu Hitam town. Because of the distance between the Malaysian and Thai checkpoints, many people take taxis between the two. Malaysian taxis will usually stop just short of the border, which is within easy walking distance to the Thai checkpoint.

To Thailand: Taxis to Hat Yai (between RM30-50) and other towns in Thailand can also be found at the duty free shopping complex between the Malaysian and Thai immigration checkpoints. You will also see many signboards offering taxi services to Hat Yai along the expressway before reaching town. Taxis are also available on the Thai side in Sadao.

Most Malaysians drive to Bukit Kayu Hitam, leave their car in Malaysian territory and take taxis into Thailand to save themselves the hassle of getting Thai insurance for their vehicles. One popular place to park is at the Duty Free shopping complex. To get there, drive through Malaysian immigration as if you were driving into Thailand, then turn into the Duty Free complex parking space. There is a Hat Yai taxi counter near the exit of the car park with fares clearly displayed.

To other parts of Malaysia: For those arriving from Thailand, Malaysian taxis can be found just inside Malaysian territory after crossing the border gate, ready to bring you to through the Malaysian immigration checkpoint (about 1km away) and onward to any Malaysian destination. You can pay for one seat and wait until all seats are taken before the taxi moves, or pay for the whole car. Please agree on a price before boarding the taxi.

By road
Bukit Kayu Hitam is the northern end of the tolled North-South Expressway (Route E1) which spans Peninsular Malaysia. Once it crosses the Thai border into Sadao, it becomes the toll-free National Highway 4 which goes all the way to Bangkok via Hat Yai.

Bukit Kayu Hitam is 48km north of Alor Setar, about 150km from Penang and 510km from Kuala Lumpur.

For those heading to Langkawi, take the North-SOuth Expressway to Changloon (just the next town) and turn into the new highway which goes all the way to Kuala Perlis in Perlis to catch the ferry to the island.

Karma Karuna Buddhist Centre, Lunas

Karma Karuna Buddhist Centre, Lunas, Kedah was established on 1st August 1995. The setting up of the Centre has greatly benefited those who are interested in practising Tibetan Buddhism in the region.

The Centre's Resident Master, Venerable Lama Khedtup Rinpoche came from a long distance away from Malaysia - from Nepal - with the aim of establishing and building up the Centre as a place for spreading Buddhism and to guide and lead the devotees onto the right path of Buddhist practices. Under the close guidance of the Resident Master, many devotees have already started to engage in the Four Foundation practices.

Being a legal organisation in Malaysia an application for registration was made to the appropriate department for their consideration. In 1998, the Registrar of societies officially approved the Centre for registered under the Societies Act 1966. A Certificate of Registration was then issued.

Dharma Activities at the Centre
The Centre, at present is holding its weekly programs as below:

At every month end, an Eight Precepts full day (from 7 am till 6 pm) chanting program is held regularly.

The Centre also holds a special puja once a month.

On every New and Full Moon, the Centre emphasises the Buddhas' teachings on compassionate by releasing lives and some other Dharma good deeds and motives like feeding fishes in river etc.

Special Annual Events
Other activities include:
Ching Ming and Chang Chok Lamp Offering and Puja during the 4th and 7th month of Chinese calendar respectively;
Mahakala puja before Chinese New Year;
Chanting of Four Arms Chenrezig Sadhana on New Year Eve;
Smoke Offering Puja together with flags hanging procession on the 13th day of Chinese New Year etc.

The Master also holds Fire Puja and Smoke Offering upon devotees' requested places

The Centre also devotes some welfare contributions every three months to the social needy.

Venerable Lama Khedtup Rinpoche was born in the year 1955 in West Tibet. In 1961, during the communist occupation, Lama Rinpoche together with his family left for Nepal and built their permanent residence there. At the age of twelve, he was ordained by Venerable Drudsing Rinpoche and began his Buddhism Studies Training at that time.

Lama Khedtup Rinpoche
In 1973, Lama Rinpoche entered the renowned Sanskrit University in India. He spent nine years there pursuing his studies of Buddhist Philosophy. Upon completion of his study, he was awarded the Acharya Degree, which is equivalent to Master of Arts (MA.). Thereafter, he was offered a position as Grammar Teacher in one of the Tibetan Schools in Kathmandu Nepal for one year.

In 1984, at the request of Kunzig Shamarpa Rinpoche and the Late H.E. Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche, Lama Rinpoche went to Rumtek Monastery to teach Grammar in Nalanda Institute for a duration of six months. He then returned to Pokhara to teach the monks in Jangchub Choeling Monastery at the request of Venerable Shangpa Rinpoche.

In 1985, he joined the Rumtek Retreat Centre to perform the Traditional Six Yogas of Naropa Retreat for three years and eight months. After the completion of the Retreat, he returned to Pokhara and became the Vajra and Discipline Master of Jangchub Choeling Monastery until 1993.

In 1993, Kunzig Shamarpa Rinpoche sent him to Kuala Lumpur Karma Kagyu Dharma Society in Malaysia, to be the Resident Master there until 1995.

After that he setup his own centre in Lunas, Kedah which is called Lunas Karma Karuna Buddhist Centre. Since then he has held many Buddhist Dharma activities at the Centre. In 1998, he was officially appointed as the religious advisor of Sungai Petani Karma Kagyu Dharma Society and he has since then held many Dharma activities in the states of Kedah and Penang.

Gunung Jerai

Formerly known as "Kedah Peak", this forest-clad Gunung Jerai is a massive limestone outcrop that rises 1200m above sea level. As the highest peak in the state, it adds a touch of variety to the scenic flat plains seen throughout the area. There are a number of legends and historical facts attached to this mountain. During the Hindu-Buddhist era, it was a sacred mountain. Ruins of Hindu and Buddhist temples were discovered at the foot of the hills. Varied tales of a "Raja Bersiong" (the King with Fangs) also abound. He had once held power over an ancient kingdom near the mountains. Recent archeological findings revealed the existence of the "Temple of the Ninth Water Pool"; many believe that it was Raja Bersiong's private pool. Amidst such majestic surroundings, it is indeed difficult to separate fact from fiction.

Today, its cool fresh mountain air is matched by the quiet serenity of its natural surroundings. On clear days, different vantage points on this mountain offer breathtaking views of Kedah's padi fields, which stretches to Perlis in the north, the emerald seas surrounding Penang in the southwest, and the legendary island of Langkawi in the northwest. The mountain also offers a unique selection of plants, which make it even more intriguing for the botanist. The Sungai Teroi Forest Recreation Park houses an endless variety of herbs, ferns, flowering plants, and climbers. Picnic sites are scattered all over the park, offering sweeping views of lowland plains and padi fields. Hiking trails that are interspersed with flowerbeds of vivid hues provide opportunities for leisurely strolls. Trees along the path are labeled for easy identification. Part of the mountain stream has even been dammed to provide cool clear pools for swimming. For the more adventurous, overnight shelters have also been provided. At the peak of the mountain, the Museum of Forestry houses a wealth of information and artifacts on Malaysian forestry.

The mountain also offers a unique selection of plants, which make it even more intriguing for the botanist. The main vegetation is the dipterocarp forest which consist of hardwoods such as keruing, cengal and meranti. Going up the landscape changes dramatically from lowland to montane conifer forest. Typical species of the conifers include Agathis dammara and Podocarpus imbricatus. Several rare orchids are found on Gunung Jerai including the Bulbophyllum longiflorum. Pitcher plants of the Nepenthes species are also quite common.

The famous Alur Naga waterfall is located about 200m from the resort, which is a magnificent spot. The hike down a path of steep boulders was well worth it as one could spend the whole day enjoying the serenity and beauty of the falls.

The water was clear and the 30m high waterfall simply breathtaking. The pool beneath it is waist deep and safe for swimming. The name was derived from a legend where a dragon was believed to have lived in the cave behind the waterfall and occasionally came out to bathe in the pool.

If you are travelling from Penang along the North South Expressway, take Exit 170 at Sungai Petani North. If you are coming from Alor Star, take Exit 173 at Gurun, and similarly take the Old Trunk Road driving south till you see the sign pointing to Gunung Jerai. Ask for directions if necessary.

Funds needed to preserve treasure trove of artifacts

Relic of Bygone Era- Candi Bukit Batu Pahat amidst kuxuriant foliage KEDAH historian Ismail Salleh has expressed fear that a lot of artifacts discovered now by villagers at Lembah Bujang may be sold to unscrupulous dealers or destroyed through ignorance. "Antique dealers or their agents can be seen hanging around in coffee shops and making themselves readily accessible to villagers who may find valuable artifacts," he said. Many villagers, he said, were most reluctant to surrender artifacts they found to the museum authorities as they do not get any monetary benefit. "For example, can you imagine them handing over a gold figurine to the authorities? "Can anyone blame them if they head straight to the dealers or their agents with their find?" he said.
Ismail sympathised with the authorities whom he said lacked the funds as well as personnel and who were also racing against time. He also cited the example of the fort at Kuala Kedah which had remained neglected all these years.

Historical records show that early Chinese, Indian, Arab and Greek scholars have left accounts dating back to the third century about the fabled land of Kataha (Kedah), Srivijaya, and Trambalinga. They describe more or less what archaeologists today know for certain, that Lembah Bujang with its hundreds of temples and shrines, conceals the remains of the lost civilisation of the Hindu Kingdom, Srivijaya, dating from the first few centuries to the 12th century AD.

Srivijaya was essentially a maritime power which was not interested in acquiring more territory but its fleet established check-points, with small naval bases at strategic places to control the trade of the Straits of Malacca and the Sunda Straits, the two passages between India and China. Through these bases and the revenue they levied, Srivijaya became very powerful, and was overthrown only when its fleets became quarrelling packs of pirates in the 13th century.

The name "Bujang", it is believed, is derived from the Sanskrit word bhujanga which means serpent. Indians began coming to the Malay Peninsula primarily because they were sailing to the rich, cultured civilisation of China. They sold pepper and cotton there and bought silk, porcelain and precious objects. However, when they discovered that gold, the most precious object of all, could also be secured in the Malay Peninsula, the country then became not an obstruction to be sailed around or walked across, but a land attractive in itself.

Sandstone Bricks - The sanctuary of Candi Bukit Batu PahatTo the merchants, travellers and seamen who for centuries had crossed the vast Indian Ocean, Gunung Jerai must have appeared to them like the seat of the Gods, which provided them with land, safety, food and fresh water. More than 50 individual temple sites have been excavated and to date, nine of them have been painstakingly reconstructed. However, more research is still needed to explain the ruins, says Ismail. They may have been more than just a religious centre where sailors, grateful for having crossed the Bay of Bengal, and guided over the last of it by the towering landfall of Gunung Jerai, came ashore in the sheltered Sungai Merbok and paid tribute to the Gods before venturing further south.

During the 1960's, some historians found it difficult to believe that any important settlement, other than an active fishing village supporting a religious centre, could be sustained in this swampy area close by a mountain, unless it was another Trans-peninsula terminus. "It must have been a big settlement due to the large number of artifacts found over the years. To be fair to the earlier historians, most of the artifacts were only found in the 1980s," he said. Ismail said further south within the Sungai Mas area, artifacts such as granite implements and building parts, semi-precious stones and beads are still being discovered. There must have been early settlements which flourished at Bukit Penjara, Bukit Meriam and Batu Lintang, all to the south of Sungai Merbok, he said.

As compared to Lembah Bujang where "finds"' were first made in pre-war days, the first discoveries of Sungai Mas were only made in the 1970s by researchers from Universiti Malaya and the Museums and Antiquities Department. It is believed that the department has plans to establish a museum in the Sungai Mas area in view of the many discoveries being made.

Giant Mortars - Granite mortars with pestles found in Lembah BujangAccording to the Malay Annals, Rajendra I, King of Chola in India, attacked Srivijaya and Lembah Bujang in 1025 to smash the commercial monopoly of Srivijaya over the China trade route. Its king was captured together with his elephants, his capital was sacked, and his State treasures carried off to India. Painstaking excavation work by archaeologists has revealed that the Candi Bukit Batu Pahat in Lembah Bujang is not a tomb temple. They found within its enclosure six intact granite caskets with nine chambers. The chambers contained mainly Tantric symbols, gems and other small objects considered precious or magically powerful. Contrary to earlier assumptions, they did not contain the slightest trace of ashes or bones. The purpose of the multi-chambered caskets, with their foundation deposits, was to ensure by magical means. that the shrine, image or stupa built above them, had the power and attributes of a microcosm.

H.G. Quatritch Wales, the archaeologist, wrote that the apparently exceptional importance of the Bukit Batu Pahat 'temple can find sufficient explanation in its relation to the sacred character of Gunung, Jerai, which, in the eves of a very thoroughly Indianised people at this period, involved no cult of dead kings. The history of this Indianised period may be difficult to discover and relate, but its result, namely the cultural legacy passed on to Malaysia, is still evident all around us.

Lembah Bujang

Home to the most important Hindu-Buddhist kingdom in the Malay Peninsula, Lembah Bujang dates as far back as the 5th Century. By the 7th Century, it had become part of the huge Sriwijaya Empire of Sumatra. Lembah Bujang reached its architectural peak in the 9th and 10th Century; Hindu and Buddhist temples were scattered all over the area. Archeologists have unearthed more than 53 temples or "candis" (shrines). The kingdom had traded with India, Khmer, and Sriwijaya. It was a kingdom that was rich in history, culture, and trade.

Nonetheless, the kingdom crumbled and temples were deserted with the coming of Islam in the 14th Century. These temples remained buried in the jungle until British archeologist Quatrich-Wales first excavated them in 1936. The Muzium Arkeologi Lembah Bujang (Bujang Valley Archeological Museum) chronicles these excavations. It also displays stone carvings, pottery shards, and other findings. Behind the museum, visitors will be treated to the sight of temples or "candis". The most significant and largest temple would be the 1000-year-old Candi Bukit Batu Pahat.

Pulau Langkawi is the foremost of a group of 104 islands lying off the coast of Kedah, in northwestern Malaysia. Clustered together in a confusing, labyrinthine mass and situated along a major trade route, the Langkawi islands have like the Islands of the Bahamas a long history as a refuge of pirates. Also like the Bahamas, the Langkawi islands have in recent times become an internationally-known resort destination, since the same attributes that made the islands so advantageous for piracy makes them ideal for tranquil, romantic holiday escape. With a wealth of soft, powder-sand beaches, limestone hills wreathed in mist, and cool emerald green jungle forest, the natural beauty of these Malaysian islands is irresistible.

In addition to their natural beauty and checkered past, the Langkawi islands are notable for the wealth of legends with which they are associated. The most well-known of these tales is that of Mahsuri, a lovely maiden executed after having been falsely accused of adultery. As the blood flowed out of her dying body, Mahsuri laid a curse on the island that Langkawi would be barren for seven generations. Soon after, the Siamese attacked the island and ravaged it. Kuah

Air Hangat Village
Formerly a popular hot spring known as Telaga Air Hangat, Air Hangat Village is now a combination spa and cultural experience park. Located on an extensive site about sixteen kilometers north of Kuah, the village presents performances of Malaysian and Southeast Asian dances and traditional games as well as cultural shows and activities such as trained elephant performances and padi planting. The hot springs have been converted into an impressive three-tiered fountain that is accompanied by a hand-carved stone mural of their origins. Air Hangat Village also offers duty-free shopping, as well as fine Malaysian, Thai, and Indonesian cuisine served in its on-site theatre restaurant. Air Hangat is open from 10 am to 10pm daily.

Taman Buaya Langkawi (Langkawi Crocodile Farm)
The crocodile farm is situated at Teluk Datai, about thirty kilometers from Kuah Town. The farm has more crocodiles than one can easily imagine--over 1000 in all, including several rare species, as well as some alligators. Although there is an exhibition centre with displays on the life cycle of the crocodile and many specimens and photographs of every conceivable aspect of crocodiles, the real draw here are the lurking thousands of live animals. The farm has conveniently divided its ponds so as to satisfy a whole range of common fascinations. The ponds include:

The Species Pond. A good place to start for those who are still a little fuzzy on that crocodile/alligator distinction.
The Breeding Pond. A glimpse into the intimate lives of average crocodiles.
The Bridge-Over-Pond. The litmus test of people's crocodile fears, this pond allows the visitor to get a little more up-close-and-uneasy.
The Feeding Pond. An incontrovertible demonstration of the fact that crocodiles are way too fast and dangerous to be your friend.
The Show Pond. Man versus crocodile. An opportunity to ponder why anyone would ever decide to wrestle a crocodile.

The Langkawi Crocodile Farm is registered with The Convention on International Trade and Endangered Species (CITES). The farm includes dining and parking facilities as well as a souvenir shop. It is open from 9:00am to 5:00pm daily.

Kampung Tanamas
Located about fourteen kilometers from Kuah Town, the attraction of this modest village is that it offers visitors a chance to participate in a number of traditional Malaysian cultural activities. Kampung Tanamas is open daily from 8.30am-6.00pm. Entrance Fee: RM1.00 per person. (You can enter free of charge if you have the receipt to enter Mahsuri's Tomb.)

Pulau Singa Besar
Located about forty minutes by boat to the south of the main island of Langkawi. Because of its diverse ecological environment, this small, undeveloped island has been designated as a Bird and Animal Sanctuary. While there isn't much to do here other than to observe nature, the nature of Pulau Singa Besar rewards such attention.

How to get there

Location : Situated at the crossroads of the Thai-Malaysian borders.

By Road: Drive to Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis on the north-western coast of Peninsula Malaysia, the main-take-off points by ferry. The journey from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Kedah takes about 6 hours while Kuala Perlis is another one hour away.

By Air: The Langkawi International Airport at Padang Mat Sirat is about 20 km from Kuah and 8 km from the beach resorts in Pantai Cenang. Direct air services from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi are provided by Malaysia Airlines on a daily basis and Air Asia five times weekly. Silk Air also flies regularly from Singapore to the island. There are also direct international flights to Langkawi from Osaka and Taipei.

By Ferry: Express ferries provide regular services daily to Langkawi from both Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis. The journey to Langkawi from Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis takes 1 hour 15 minutes and 45 minutes respectively.

Daily flights to the Sultan Abdul Halim Airport in Kepala Batas, Kedah, are available from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) via Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT). Travellers can choose to drive along the North-South Expressway which connects Kuala Lumpur to Bukit Kayu Hitam or take air-conditioned coaches or taxis to Alor Star. There are also daily train services that link Alor Star to various towns within the country.

Frequent flight to Langkawi from KLIA and Changi Airport in Singapore are available while travellers who prefer to drive will need to drive to the jetty in Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis, the main take-off points by ferry to Langkawi. Ferries to Langkawi can also be boarded at Port Swettenham in Penang.
