iShowU HD

Instantly capture your computers screen and audio. Record audio from your computer, from your mic and your programs or only from your mic.

If you want to dedicate one of your corners to a image of yourself you can do that by recording from the iSight camera or a connected camera.

By opening the advanced panel you can choose to record to whatever format you have installed on your computer. These days when storage capacity is almost to cheep to meter, I would recommend you to use either ProRes or something similar to that. If you want to do any post production with the recorded files I recommend that you use the best possible source files.

iShowU HD Pro

In the Pro version you can add fully customizable watermarks to your recordings. My favorite option on the Pro version is that I can record the movie without having to convert the files to the destination format on the fly. This means that iShowU will burst out recording data directly to your temporary recording directory, and as soon as you finish your recording iShowU will convert your files and store them at your destination folder.

I like to work with source files that are recorded in a format optimized for post production.

iShowU HD sets you back $29.95 and the Pro version sets you back $59.95. In addition to that you can buy a bundle with either of the versions + Stomp. The bundle sets you back another $10 in addition to the previous mentioned prize.

The latest version of Pages include a fullscreen mode that hides everything else but your document. You can use the mode by clicking on the… you guessed it – Full Screen button. If you only need a word prosessor without all the design elements Pages will be a little overkill. Pages comes together with Numbers and Keynote at $79.

A free (donation) alternative is jDarkRoom. The program is written in the Java programming language nad is available on the Windows, Linux and OSX platform. To me this program is not as easy to use as the alternatives and at least the latest version is very slow. jDarkRoom is inspired by WriteRoom..

This is my favorite. It is lightweight and super snappy. You open it, start scribbeling down whatever you are working on, ESC out to your desktop to continue reading your source, tab back to WriteRoom and then CMD+Enter into fullscreen mode again. Hog Bay Software goes to a long lenght to tell you that WriteRoom it is not a programmers text editor, not a full blown text editor, just a distraction free writing application.

HandBreak

Handbreak is the free alternative. You put whatever file format your computer can support + DVDs in on one side and you get the format you want out on the other side. You can easily create queues of files that HandBreak have to convert without any input from the user.

The program comes preloaded with presets for popular file formats for iPod, iPhone, AppleTV and PS3.
