Paul Motian (1931-2011)

It is with sadness that I learned today that Paul Motian has passed away. Paul was a fantastic drummer, who played on many Keith Jarrett recordings (“Life Between The Exit Signs”, “Expectations”, “The Mourning of a Star”, “Fort Yawuh”, “The Survivors’ Suite”, “At the Deer Head Inn”, etc.).

The latest issue of Jazzwise (#157, October 2011) includes an interview with Keith Jarrett by Stuart Nicholson. An excerpt is available on jazzwisemagazine.com:

Even Jarrett himself was taken aback at what he had achieved when he listened to the concert recording for the first time. “Even though I did it, a completely improvised, structured arc of music that has one of the most beautiful endings I have ever done, it still blows my mind,” he reflects. “I know I did it, but there is no way in the world I can say how I did it. I can remember it felt – I won’t say easy – but somehow it was less stressful. That is why I immediately called Manfred from the airport and said ‘Whatever plans we have we’re going to scrap them and release this first’. And he knew it was serious because he never got a call from me from the airport!”

“Mysteries/Shades” re-release

“Mysteries” and “Shades” (both originally released in 1975) have just been re-released as a single CD by Impulse! / Universal Music Group, at least in Europe (they’re listed as domestic releases on Amazon Germany and UK). They were previously available on CD as Japanese imports or as part of the “Mysteries: Impulse Years 1975-1977″ boxed set. Thanks to Jon for the information!

Next album, “Rio”, to be released on October 25, 2011?

Keith Jarrett’s next album, a recording of the April 9, 2011 solo concert in Rio de Janeiro, is now listed on Amazon (US, UK, and France). It will apparently be released on October 25, 2011 and will simply be called “Rio”. It is also interesting to note that it is going to be a 2-CD set (meaning that it will include the entire concert?). Thanks to Olivier for this information!

Update (August 29, 2011). According to Amazon Germany, “Rio” will be released on October 1, 2011. Thanks to Jonas for letting me know!

Update (September 1, 2011). Amazon now has the cover art for “Rio”. Also, the release date for the US is apparently October 18, 2011.

Update (September 30, 2011). The release dates for “Rio” on Amazon are now: October 19 (Japan), October 25 (France), November 4 (Germany), November 7 (UK), and November 8 (US).

WDR (Westdeutscher Rundfunk) will rebroadcast the November 6, 1971 concert at the Philharmonie in Berlin on Monday, July 4, 2011, at 1:15 AM.

Das WDR Jazzline Archiv zeigt die legendären Konzerte der Berliner Jazztage aus den Jahren 1964 – 1975, diesmal das Konzert der Miles Davis Group in der Berliner Philharmonie vom 6. November 1971, bei dem Keith Jarrett an den Keyboards saß. Joachim Ernst Berendt bezeichnete Davis’ Auftritt in seiner Ansage als den bedeutendsten des ganzen Festivals. Zwischen 1970 und 1973 veränderten sich Sound und Look der Miles Davis Group radikal: Der Free Jazz wich langsam einem harten, teilweise fast schon Punkrock vorweg nehmenden Funk-Sound.

Update (April 5, 2011). As mentioned in the forum, tickets are available, but not on the English version of the Ticketpark website, only on the Korean version. You can buy tickets by phone. Apparently, at some point, you can dial 9 to speak to an English-speaking employee, but I haven’t tried that personally.

Keith Jarrett returns to New York’s Carnegie Hall on Sunday, January 16, 2011 at 8:00 PM to perform
one his rare solo piano concerts. The concert will feature an entire evening of solo piano improvisations
performed in an acoustic recital setting. The concert will be Keith Jarrett’s only North American solo
concert of the year.

Keith Jarrett’s last solo concerts at Carnegie Hall were in September 2005 (his first solo concert at the hall
in over 30 years) and in January 2009. The historic 2005 concert was recorded and released in 2006 by
ECM Records as a 2-CD set: The Carnegie Hall Concert.

Review of January 29, 2009 Carnegie Hall Solo Concert:

“ Jarrett’s recent Carnegie Hall concert may well have been the greatest solo performance of his
career. To see him raise the bar again was truly a spectacular event–not only for himself but for
the nearly three thousand fans, which gave him six passionate standing ovations. For many, this
concert was a dream come true, providing some compensation for Jarrett fans who wish they
could have been at previous triumphs such as The Koln Concert in 1975, The Vienna Concert
in 1991, and The Carnegie Hall Concert in 2005. Another milestone has been added to the list:
Carnegie Hall 2009 will undeniably be remembered as a singular triumph in Keith Jarrett’s career
and, as far as Jarrett fans are concerned, quite possibly in music.”

June 9, 1972 concert with Charlie Haden and Paul Motian available for streaming

France Musique recently broadcast the complete recording of a concert recorded on June 9, 1972 at the Studio 104 de la Maison de Radio France in Paris, with Charlie Haden and Paul Motian (more than two hours of music!). This concert is currently (and officially) available for streaming on the France Musique website (I don’t know how many days or weeks it will remain available, though).

This is probably not news to those of you who are familiar with ECM Records, but “Jasmine” can be ordered directly from ecmrecords.com. Excerpt from their FAQ:

Update (May 15, 2010). According to ECM Records USA, Amazon and iTunes are the “recommended” online stores to pre-order “Jasmine” in the US, not iclassics.com.

Promotional video for “Jasmine”

Universal Music France posted a promotional video for the Keith Jarrett and Charlie Haden duo album “Jasmine” (to be released in May 2010). It consists of footage of Keith Jarrett playing with Charlie Haden and Paul Motian in 1972, as well as Keith Jarrett and Charlie Haden playing at Jarrett’s home a few years ago (2007 or 2008?). I guess most (if not all) of it comes from the “Charlie Haden” documentary by Reto Caduff.

This is apparently the first time Keith Jarrett will play in South Korea.

Keith Jarrett and Charlie Haden duo album “Jasmine” to be released in May 2010

Thanks to Jonas for this exciting news! ECM will release a Keith Jarrett and Charlie Haden duo album called “Jasmine” in May 2010 (ECM 2165). The album is already listed on Amazon Germany with a release date of May 7, 2010. This remains to be confirmed, but the album was apparently recorded at Keith Jarrett’s home studio in New Jersey in March 2007.

Update (March 11, 2010). From Steve Lake (ECM Records, originally posted on JazzCorner.com): “Early in 2007, Jarrett was asked to contribute to a Haden documentary (“Rambling Boy”) and they played briefly together, for the first time since the 1976 break-up of the American Quartet . A few months later, Jarrett invited Haden to his home studio and they recorded in duo over a four day period. “Jasmine” comprises the material they liked best from these sessions. Emphasis is on standards and love songs, but the overall feel and atmosphere is perhaps closer to Jarrett’s solo “Melody At Night…” than anything else in his discography. Intimate, then, and deeply melodic.”

Update (March 23, 2010). More information about “Jasmine” from Jazzwise Magazine: “The eight tracks are mostly love songs from the standards book, though one notable surprise comes in the form of ‘One Day I’ll Fly Away’, as made famous by Randy Crawford.”

According to KeithJarrett.it, there’s an interview with Keith Jarrett by Stuart Nicholson in the latest (January/February 2010) issue of Jazzit, an Italian jazz magazine. They’re discussing “Paris / London: Testament”, among other things. I don’t know if the original interview (in English) is available anywhere at the moment.

Live version of “Expectations” from 1969 available from ina.fr

A live version of “Expectations” (from the album of the same name, released in 1972), recorded for the “Tous en scène” TV show in Paris and broadcast on November 23, 1969 by La Deuxième Chaîne de l’ORTF, is available for download from the Institut national de l’audiovisuel Web site. A free snippet (20 seconds) is available. The full version (3:52) is available for 1.50 EUR (as a DRM-protected DivX video file, unfortunately – or as a DVD, but you’ll have to pay for shipping).

Keith Jarrett plays with Gus Nemeth (bass) and Aldo Romano (drums). As far as I know, this is the only video of this group ever released.

“Tous en scène” was produced by Pierre Desfons, Claude Ventura, Robert Bober, and Maurice Dugowson. For more information about this TV show, check out this blog post (in French).

The album will be released in early October 2009 (e.g. October 2 in Germany and October 6 in the US).

They were previously scheduled to go on sale on Monday, August 24, so you might want to check Ticketcorner’s Web site both on Monday and Tuesday, just to be sure…

Next Keith Jarrett album to be a 3-CD set entitled “Testament (Paris/London)”

Thanks to Jacques and Mourad for the information. Keith Jarrett’s next album will be a 3-CD set entitled “Testament (Paris/London)”. It will be released in late 2009 (probably October, but this is subject to change). It will probably include parts (or the entirety?) of two solo concerts from last year:

Salle Pleyel, Paris (November 26, 2008)
Royal Festival Hall, London (December 1, 2008)

Jacques adds that, according to an interview published in Jazzman in 2005, “Testament” is the name Keith Jarrett originally wanted to give to “Radiance”. It probably says something about the quality of the music on “Testament” (at least from Keith Jarrett’s point of view).

Update (July 29, 2009). Looks like the official release date is October 5, 2009 (according to the London concert “programme”).

Update (August 21, 2009). According to AllBlues and Amazon.de, the album should be released on October 2, 2009 in Switzerland and Germany (and probably other European countries).

Update (August 26, 2009). Amazon now has the cover artwork on their Web sites (UK, Germany, France, etc.). The number of discs (three!) is also confirmed.

I’m a little late on this (this has already been discussed on the Keith Jarrett Yahoo! Music Group, as well as on KeithJarrett.it). Anyway, the musicians among you might be interested in “Keith Jarrett’s Transformation of Standard Tunes: Theory, Analysis and Pedagogy”, a book written by Dariusz Terefenko and published on March 11, 2009 by VDM Verlag. It’s apparently very technical, so it’s probably not for everybody.

Thanks to Peter for the information. Sveriges Radio P1, a Swedish radio channel, recently broadcast a program about “The Köln Concert” entitled “Det ospelbara pianot”. It’s in Swedish, but there are also some parts in English (e.g. Vera Brandes talking about what happened before the concert). The program is available for download in MP3 format.

“Although they’re pretty much regulars there, it’s probably worth noting that the trio with the big T are part of the official program of Jazz à Juan this year also.”

Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, and Jack DeJohnette will play at the Pinède Gould in Juan-les-Pins on July 18, 2009 at 9 PM. The rest of the program for the 49^th Festival de Jazz à Juan is available here (a press release in French is also available). Tickets will go on sale on April 20.

I don’t know when or where the tickets will go on sale, but they might be available at some point from the Berliner Philharmoniker Web site. More about this later, hopefully.

Thanks to Ricky Linn for pointing out to me that more than 40 Keith Jarrett albums are available from eMusic. For more information about eMusic, check out their “eMusic Story” page or Wikipedia. Basically, eMusic is a legal “online music store that operates by subscription”. The tracks are available as DRM-free MP3 files.

As announced by KeithJarrett.it and confirmed by Keith Jarrett’s manager, the November 20, 2009 concert at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center is not a solo concert, but a trio concert. The confusion comes from the fact that ECM Records is currently listing the concert under “Keith Jarrett” and not under “Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, Jack DeJohnette”.

As many news outlets have already reported, British jazz musician and writer Ian Carr died on February 25, 2009. He was the author of Keith Jarrett: The Man and His Music and also collaborated on the 2004 documentary Keith Jarrett: The Art of Improvisation, produced and directed by Mike Dibb. ECM Records have added two Keith Jarrett Trio concerts to their Musicians on tour page:

March 11, 2009: Royce Hall, UCLA, Los Angeles
March 14, 2009: Zellerbach Hall, UC Berkeley, Berkeley

Tickets for the Los Angeles concert will go on sale on January 14 and will be available from UCLA Live.

Tickets for the Berkeley concert are apparently already available from Cal Performances.

More than 30 Keith Jarrett albums available on HDtracks

This is not really news, but I just realized that 34 Keith Jarrett albums (mostly from ECM Records) are officially available from HDtracks in FLAC or AIFF format (i.e. as lossless files). None of these albums are available in the “96 KHz / 24 bit” section of the store, unfortunately, but I’m not aware of any other store selling Keith Jarrett music as DRM-free lossless files.

“Yesterdays” to be released on January 26, 2009

According to a message on the Keith Jarrett Yahoo! Group, Keith Jarrett’s next album “Yesterdays” will be released on January 26, 2009 and will also be available on vinyl. Excerpt from the “program” for the recent concert in London:

“2001 was a vintage year for the Jarrett Trio, as three outstanding live albums – The Out-Of-Towners, Always Let Me Go and My Foolish Heart – have already shown. Yesterdays, recorded at Tokyo’s Metropolitan Festival Hall, is a fourth, with all-standards programme and a strong emphasis on bebop. It will be available in two versions: as single CD or double-LP with 180 gram vinyl – the first new vinyl release on ECM in 15 years.”

Thomas A. McGraw contacted Heino Frieberg at ECM Records. Here’s what Mr. Frieberg has to say about the lack of new releases in 2008:

“It’s right, this year we focused on re-issues and some DVD documentations for Jarrett. Who knows, to balance for that we may come up with a second new release of him later in 2009 …”

Keith Jarrett’s next album “Yesterdays” to be released in January 2009

According to ECM Records, the next trio album will be entitled “Yesterdays” and released in January 2009. The December issue of Downbeat, which includes a 5-page article about Keith Jarrett, mentions that the album is a live recording from one or several concerts from 2001 in Tokyo. Steve Lake, from ECM Records, adds that the album will consist of “eight pieces from April 30, 2001 at Metropolitan Festival Hall, plus one piece recorded at a sound-check on April 24 at Orchard Hall”.

Three Keith Jarrett albums in ECM Touchstones series

“Facing You”, “Standards Live”, and “Bye Bye Blackbird” are now part of the ECM Touchstone series. These albums have apparently not been remastered, but they’re available for 9.90 euros each (what they call “download price” in the small brochure I received) and include “cardboard covers with original artwork”.
