I am so pleased to announce a new venture; a new ministry!

Since a long while ago, God has allowed me to be in a position to be one on one with women seeking advice and mentorship. I wrote about it first in my post “Pouring Out”.

I’ve continued on this path and an opportunity has been opened to expand even more.

Through a most wonderful friendship developing and online Bible Study with Stephanie Shott since September 2010 comes this partnership!

What I’m talking about: The M.O.M. Initiative (Moms On a Mission to Mentor Other Moms)!

What We Do: The M.O.M. Initiative is a missional resource that equips, enables and encourages women to experience Titus 2 in real life. If the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world – then the church that mentors those hands will win it.

The Engagement of Trae and Aubrey

They were introduced as a couple back in November with THIS post.

At this moment Aubrey is being strongly encouraged to start a blog, so I wont steal her thunder in telling her and Trae’s story.

An Annoying Post

Having conversations with my soon-to-wed daughter today was quite funny and very real.

Today, we talked about the “small stuff” of annoyances; you know, things like toothpaste…with her saying, “Momma, I wonder if he’ll leave the toothpaste cap off.”

I have to smile at that, and I’m sure that you’re nodding your head at remembering the same thing as a newlywed.

Aubrey knows that she wont be all giggly everyday (even though I’m sure her guy will find a way at some point during the day to make it so), but she does know that everyday will bring an opportunity to love her man even more!

There are a few things that I’d like to share in handling possible conflicts..you know..the small stuff; as that’s what we’re talking about in this post.

Your husband is not your enemy.
He isn’t really trying to hurt or irk you.
He’s used to doing things a certain way and it wont automatically change once he puts a ring on it.
He can’t read your mind. Talk about it. Don’t sulk.
Pray for good timing to bring it up.
Be quick to forgive.
Laugh it off…is it really THAT serious?
Don’t have to be right.
Grace, grace and more grace.
Remember that YOU have some things goin’ on that irk the snot outta him too! Work on YOU.
Through it all, remember RESPECT.
Don’t allow it to turn it into something big…that would thrill the enemy.

Now it’s time for me to go work on a few things myself!

A Woman’s Guide to Fasting by Lisa E. Nelson

It was truly a pleasure to read A Woman’s Guide to Fasting.
Even from a young age I’ve known about fasting and praying. I didn’t always understand the “why”. I knew that while fasting I was to use that time for prayer…but praying for what? Besides, my problems or issues weren’t THAT big.

Over the years I’ve learned that there doesn’t have to be a problem or issue at all to fast.
As Lisa Nelson simply puts it, “True biblical fasting is not about the external act of not eating; it is about the internal work of the heart seeking hard after God.”

Offering insights and realistic advice specifically for women, she answers vital questions such as:

How do I fit fasting into a busy schedule?

How should I prepare physically? Spiritually?

What should I do--and expect--before, during, and after a fast?

What cautions should I be aware of?

What are the best ways to end a fast?

How can I make the most out of a non-food fast?

In A Woman’s Guide to Fasting, Lisa shares not only the Why and the What, but also the How. She gives great details to different time periods of fasting and levels of fasting.

What I like most about this guide to Fasting is that the focus isn’t totally on the “how to” but she strongly stresses the important of knowing that God has called you to a fast. Being led by the Holy Spirit is vital in fasting because a breakthrough in your walk with Christ is what is to be accomplished.

Even if I don’t use this book solely as a guide to fasting, its a valuable tool in learning to get closer to God in the off-season of fasting.

A Woman’s Guide to Fasting isn’t an “over-your-head” kind of read. Lisa is practical, pointed and speaks in terms that are easy to understand without talking down to or condemning the reader. She’s gentle in her step by step guidance.

Some of the reasons that fasting may be needed can be spiritual growth, intercessory prayer, spiritual warfare, in obedience to a call, or in response to a crisis.

There are so many things that spoke directly to my heart while reading this book.

Connections and Courtship

There is a huge story to tell, but I’ll be sharing more details as time goes on.

I’m here to tell HER side of the story. In a moment you will be linked to HIS side of the story…where they meet in the middle.

I’d written before about our oldest daughter, Aubrey, committing to “Stay in the Castle”.

Aubrey, just overcoming a breakup, decided to lay low and devote her time to getting closer to God; not seeking another relationship.

Little did she know that God was working on some things. He wanted to bless His girl!

How the story began:

I’d met Sandra at Love Abounds at Home about 2 years ago. She mentioned her son then, but Aubrey was a little too young for a long distance relationship.

Some time passed. Sandra and I kept in touch through Facebook. I confided in her during Aubrey’s last relationship. She learned so much about my daughter during that time that she knew the ins and outs of Aubrey’s heart and spirit.

Sandra let some time pass (not very much. haha!!! You know I had to go there, Sandra!) before she presented her son again.

I talked with Brian about it before we moved forward with the friend suggestion.

Where Your Worth Is, Young Woman

Don’t settle for a continual trampled heart.
Please stop allowing your heart to be attacked.
Too bad it doesn’t hurt bad enough for you to want better for yourself.
You refuse wise counsel and follow after the lust of your flesh.
That guy will continue to use you because you allow it.
He whispers intoxicating words in your ear.
What he really is, is toxic!
That boy does not care for you. He doesn’t care for himself.
The enemy is getting so much satisfaction of your being duped.

Dreams, Plans, Goals and Critics

I read an article that came to my email this morning that is pretty impactful when it comes to moving forward in our dreams, plans and goals. The article addresses how we handle the haters and naysayers of where we’re trying to go.

I want to share that with you:

Critics Throw Mud, but Lose Ground

The first and great commandment about critics is: don’t let them scare you. No one can make you feel average without your permission. Charles Dodgson said, “If you limit your actions in life to things that nobody could possibly find fault with, you will not do much.” Nothing significant has ever been accomplished without controversy or criticism.

When you allow other people’s words to stop you, they will. To succeed in life you must overcome the many efforts of others to pull you down. Don’t be afraid of what others say about you. Instead follow what Proverbs says, “Fear of man is a dangerous trap, but to trust in God means safety.” If you think more about what other people think of you, you’ll have more confidence in their opinion than you have in your own. Don’t let your life depend on the permission and opinion of others.

Christopher Morley said, “The truth is, a critic is like a gong at a railroad crossing, clanging loudly and vainly as the train goes by.” Many great ideas have been lost because those who had them couldn’t stand the criticism and gave up. Know this: a critic is simply someone who finds fault without a search warrant. Critics not only expect the worst, but make the worst of what happens.

When you make your mark in life, you always attract erasers. Great minds discuss ideas, good minds discuss events, small minds discuss other people. You will never move up if you are continually running someone down.

Remember this, if you are afraid of criticism, you will die doing nothing. If you want a place in the sun, you will have to expect some blisters and sand kicked in your face.

Criticism is a compliment when you know what you’re doing is right.

I’m just back from a major business conference and am on a high this morning. My husband and I have specific goals in mind and are determined to be diligent in completing them. We can’t not!

Angry that marriages are ALLOWED to be torn apart!

Dear friends going through the crap of the pain and ugliness of being left in the turmoil of what seems to be an inevitable separation.

I’m ANGRY because my heart is SO passionate about marriages. When hurt strikes so close to me, my whole being just wants to scream and shout…

GOD HATES DIVORCE!

MAN UP! Stop being such a coward!

Have you forgotten your covenant? Did you even know that you HAVE a covenant to your wife as you do our God?

Work it out! Get help!

You have no “just cause” to divorce her!

Stop living on how you “feel”. You aren’t exempt from living out what God calls you to!

Stop walking in the flesh…

…but he doesn’t hear me. He’s hardened his heart toward the wife of his youth!

Don't Think Too Much

I told a friend that I was putting myself on blast with this post. Here goes:

I’ve been accused of something by two of my loved ones that I’m finally coming to realize is true…I’m an over thinker!

Being a quiet person doesn’t always have the best benefits. The absence of sound coming out of my mouth means that there is sometimes a lot of chatter going on in my head.

I had to apologize to my oldest daughter for passing that ugly trait on!
She told me, “NOW I see where I get it from! I over-think situations and start to become worried or doubtful.”

Its sad to say that I’ve probably done her so much more damage than either one of us ever thought would happen!

There is a tendency to over-process EVERYTHING. The next thing that happens is tons of questions, or questioning. Those that are around us see the extreme and excess. Thankfully my husband has called me on it a couple times.

I retreat when I feel that I’ve said something that someone else may take the wrong way…even when it’s perfectly harmless.
Doubt creeps in too often.

Wrongly reading other’s actions and motives can be detrimental at times.

I wonder too often, “What did they mean by that statement?”. “Did they mean to use that punctuation mark?”. “Why is it taking them so long to answer back? Do I bother them too much?” “Do I ask too many questions?”. "He’s being too quiet. Is he upset with me? Is everything okay with us?”

I’ve even told my daughter these next two things. I try. I really do try to remember this for myself:

Your perception is your reality, but is it the truth?
Texting (email, IM, tweeting, facebook msg. [anything not involving voice or tone]) is for information; not communication. If you’re having an issue, pick up the phone or meet and talk it out.

I can’t tell you how many books I’m reading on dealing with emotions and approval addiction!

Okay…I can tell you exactly how many, and I’ll list them later.

Those are the roots of my over-thinking. Wanting to look my best for others (approval addiction) and letting my emotions rule me.

That mindset is born out of fear. Looks like they go hand in hand, huh?

This is the time to take our cue from God’s Word:

For God did not give us a spirit of timidity (of cowardice, of craven and cringing and fawning fear), but [He has give us a spirit] of power and of love and of a calm and well-balanced mind and discipline and self-control.

2 Timothy 1:7

God has given us the ability to feel and think, but I’m sure that He didn’t mean for us to obsess over our thoughts; which oft times produce negative emotions.

Negative emotions lead us to say or do negative things that can have a lasting impact on our lives and those around us.
Some consequences that come from it can be reconciled, other things can seem to be beyond repair in our eyes.

I think that I’ll hold to the words of a friend that said, “haha well, God will always work everything out”.

That is true. We have His Word as a guide to help us deal with ALL things.

in the first place.

I’m quite certain that I’ll be revisiting this subject; as I’ve got some growing to do. I’ll leave you with a quote that spoke volumes to me:

Pouring Out

Life-giving words spoken over me

Those words describe what women have poured into my life.

Influence.

I have been challenged lately.

Keeping all that I’ve learned tucked on the inside is no longer an option. I have to… I get to pour myself out.

Its as if others are reaching deep down to make me pull out what is inside me; like they’re saying, “Come on girl, I know you have something to share with me. Don’t hold back.”

Moments like that make me grateful AND apprehensive. Lord! I don’t know how I’m living this life sometimes much less helping someone in theirs!

Me? A woman of very few words (spoken aloud, that is)?

That doesn’t matter to God. He didn’t call this girl to be comfortable royalty.
There is a reason that I’m asked question after question…because the answers ARE inside me.

Me? A mentor? Mentoring someone other than my own daughters?

I don’t go seeking. I’m found.

On the job “training” and victory is all that I can offer.
No plaques or certificates hang on my wall that say I’m qualified to help someone, but plenty lessons learned hang on my heart.

When I’ve prayed, “Lord, use me today.” I didn’t know that His answer to my prayer would be to minister to another woman’s heart. I was thinking that maybe I could just smile at a neighbor, buy someone a soda, or write something cool on my facebook wall.

I never pretend to know all the answers! The Bible is my first line of defense. My pat response is, “Let’s see what the Word has to say about this.”

I've been blessed to know where to find and share resources; whether its other women, books, audio, websites or any other media. As others want to learn from me, I MUST be continually learning. I don’t want my past experiences to be the only thing that I can pull from.

The daily exchange of my flesh put to death for the Holy Spirit reigning in my being is the thing pursued.

How are you pouring out? Do you share what God has done, is doing in your life? Do you feel that you have to have it all together before you can offer anything? Are you focused on having a platform as opposed to being one-on-one, behind the scenes?

Answer those questions for yourself. See if you’re missing out on an opportunity to pour.

Being Momma to Young Ladies

It’s no secret that I love my children! I love them enough to discipline, disciple, mentor and get in their face when necessary (which isn’t often).
God’s blessed hand is on our family. We let Him take the lead, and we’re seeing the fruit that started from the root. God; our foundation.

Several years ago as our oldest daughters began maturing, my husband told me, “I don’t know anything about raising a girl, because I ain’t one.” I knew exactly what he meant…who else can teach a girl to become a woman better than her own momma?

I saw this as a continuation of what I was already doing with them. Has it always gone right? NO! Have we learned from it and grown? YEP! Have you read the title of my blog lately?! Key word: Pursuing!

My friend, Stef, co-founder of The Homeschool Village asked me to begin writing about character training and our high school daughters. I was glad that she didn’t ask me to write about academics! She knew…
This prompted me to think more about the current “events” going on in our home.

What I want to start sharing here, at my place, are more specifics (without invading anyone’s privacy) of how we’re doing life in the Nellums’ home.
Stick around because another post is coming quickly. I’m ready to jump in to a beautiful story that will unfold before your eyes…

SHE IS 16!!

Briah-Miah is what we affectionately call her. We used to shorten her name, Briahna, to “Briah”, but call her that now and she won’t answer..and she has every right!

She is gorgeous, I tell ya!

Briahna just celebrated her 16th Birthday. My momma heart shouts with joy when I think of her. She has a story. A story so beautiful that only she will tell in due time.
I wanted to take this time to tell her

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

Momma loves you, girly!
