The fantasy of weight loss drugs is that simply by taking a pill, you can shed your unwanted pounds and regain your youthful figure. The reality falls well short of that fantasy, but diet pills do produce modest results for some users.

Types of Diet Pills

Diet pills fall into two main categories.

Amphetamine appetite suppressants increase serotonin or catecholamine levels in the brain, basically tricking you into feeling as if you were full. An example of such an appetite suppressant is phentermine.

Fat absorption inhibitors, as indicated by their name, work by blocking some of the fat you consume from being absorbed. Orlistat is the only such drug currently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Effectiveness of Diet Pills

Prescription diet pills have been proven effective in promoting weight loss, but that doesn’t mean you should expect miracles.

To be specific, studies have shown that with the best prescription diet pills, roughly half of users lose weight, with the average loss being about 5% of body mass (typically about 5-20 pounds) within the first six months to a year. There is not yet clear evidence whether over the longer term users will lose any additional weight, or keep off the weight they lost in that initial period.

Drawbacks of Diet Pills

As medications go, weight loss pills are not particularly bad in terms of side effects. Are Diet Pills Worth It?

If you are, say, 200 pounds overweight, or arguably even if you’re 75 pounds overweight, it may seem that losing 5-20 pounds—that you might or might not keep off—over the course of months or a year is not such a big deal. But it’s better than nothing certainly, and for some people a realistic chance of losing 5% of their body mass may be highly desirable.

As long as you have realistic expectations and know that you’re not going to go from morbidly obese to slim and trim by popping some pills, weight loss drugs can be appropriate as part of an overall weight loss program. But that’s the key: They should be used in conjunction with changes in diet and exercise.

Your best bet to lose weight remains to adjust your diet in a healthier direction, and to be more physically active. If you choose to use diet pills in addition to (rather than instead of) these lifestyle changes, they may augment your results.

The good news is, I have moved my site back to GoDaddy. The hosting company I was using before simply is NOT secure. This is the second time my site has been hacked. And hacking is not the only bad luck I’ve had with that company. There were several down times, some that lasted for weeks. I just cannot afford for this to keep happening.

I know the site looks rather a mess right now, but I’m working on whipping it back into shape, so please bear with me.

The Republic of Cyprus has long been known as the Island of Love, not just because of the beautiful vistas and laid-back lifestyles that it harbors, but also thanks to a long historical affiliation with the sentiment of amore.  The Greek goddess of Love, Aphrodite, was said to have been born there, Antony apparently gifted the island to Cleopatra (it was reportedly the source of her intoxicating perfume), and Richard the Lionheart supposedly took a year-long sabbatical from the Crusades after conquering the island because he fell in love with a beautiful woman there.  In short, Cyprus is a great place to visit if you’re looking for a little love on your vacation.  Here are some reasons you shouldn’t pass it up.

As Mediterranean islands go, this one is about as far East as you can get, which is why it has long been considered the crossroads of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.  But it still enjoys the balmy sub-tropical climate particular to islands of the Mediterranean Sea, with temperatures settling around 75 degrees Fahrenheit (24 degrees Celsius) throughout the summer months (which run from April through to November – an incredible eight-month stretch) and dropping to about 60 degrees in the winter (the rainy season).  This gives you plenty of time in which to plan your vacation, unlike other romantic hotspots, which have much shorter peak travel seasons.

And while the climate is nice, you really can’t beat the scenic appeal of this island, which enjoys greenery throughout the calendar year as well as spectacular white-sand beaches and the cerulean waters that the Mediterranean is famous for.  Of course, you know what comes out of those waters (besides bikini-clad bodies).  This region is well known for its amazing seafood selection, including squid, octopus, and sea bass, just to name a few possibilities.  But that’s not all you’ll find to delight the palate; fresh produce is also abundant, from the tomatoes, cucumber, and avocado found in traditional salads to a wide variety of fruits and nuts.  And if seafood and veggies simply aren’t your bag, you’ll likely enjoy the spiced meats popular to the region (mainly pork and lamb) as well as the candied desserts.  Don’t forget about the wine either; some of it is said to be the oldest continuously produced.

For entertainment, you might not find the hopping clubs that permeate other tourist locales, but you will encounter plenty of culture, with art, music, literature, and even cinema that is produced on the island.  And sports are extremely popular, with world sports like soccer and rugby comingling with American faves like basketball.  Plus, you can always hit the beaches for the day or tour the island to check out some old-world architecture.

At night, retire to your lodgings relaxed and satisfied, whether you’re staying at the luxury accommodations provided by the modern Cyprus Villas or you’ve opted to take in some traditional Mediterranean charm by staying at a local B&B.  Either way, you’ll enjoy fantastic food, beautiful scenery, plenty of entertainment, and an atmosphere that will have you and your partner feeling the love in no time.
