It is my honor to share our own signature event (happened in June 08 at VivoCity Mall over 5 days) that attracted broadcast (CNA. Channel 5, 91.3 FM), printed (Straits Times, Today, 8Days Mag etc) and interactive media (Nuffnang Blogger Network) regional wide coverage. In addition, our booth sponsors have all generated positive ROI return for their investment of taking up the space at the event while Vivo provide an unique shopping experience to their shoppers. This event is also endorsed by Singapore Tourism Board and all major Movie Distributors. Lastly, we managed to raise fund for the Singapore School Pocket Fund during the 5 days event. All wins.

We did the whole event and marketing campaign with NO MONEY DOWN and generated 6 figure turnover including sponsorship value to prove that we walk the talk: Generating Ideas that Sell and produce positive marketing ROI for business Top and Bottomline. Enjoy the footage.

I mentioned in my earlier post that the Gift Hamper has committed 5 marketing flaws. I have shared the first three flaws and now I will reveal the remaining two:

4. Headline. There is no strong benefit driven headline to convince the reader to visit their website. Example, “Click Here and Save 30% Off for Your Gift. Limited to first 50 customers only!” or “80% of Your Gift will be Thrown Away. Click Here and Find Out Why…” or “7 Steps to Select the Perfect Gift for New Born/Boss/Wife/Good Pal/Birthday”. The original post card promotion fall into what you will learn in my Brand Mastery bootcamp@ “I, Me and Myself” syndrome.

5. Database System. There is no system on their website to attract and capturing database. Research has done and show that your visitor will usually spend less than a minute looking at your website (unless you are selling something erotic. :P). Meaning to say, they will either buy or they just leave. Hence, a result driven marketer will do everything to capture their visitor’s contact details even there is no sale made because it take resources to get traffic into the store or website. Using my own site as an example, visit www.brand-mastery.com and you will know what I mean. People say Cash is King, I say Database is a Goldmine!

P/S: Forward this blog to your friends if you think it might benefit them.

I received this promotional postcard in my office letter box on Monday. It was from a new boutique gift hamper start up. Beautifully designed but it contained 3 majors flaws:

1. Font and Letter Size. Maybe due to “old age” (at 32 yrs! ha), I have difficulties and feel rather frustrated reading their URL address because it is all in CAPITAL LETTER and rather long to remember. One way to improve is instead of putting WWW.THEPINKPOMEGRANDATE.COM, use this; www.ThePinkPomeGrandate.com. Easy on the eyes. You can test and try it yourself and give me your feedback.

2. No tracking mechanism. While I am glad that they use offline marketing channel to promote their online business (let’s give them a round of encouragement because they have the guts to invest and do something different for their start-up business unlike some business owners who lament about poor business and doing nothing about it). My key question is, How would you know the effectiveness of this post card unless this is the only marketing channel they used to promote the website? I doubt so. Alot of business owners do not know how to test, measure and quantify their response and result. Hence, it resulted in massive time and money wasted. One way to track is to create a code behind the URL address on the postcard such as www.ThePinkPomeGrandate.com/postcard. In this manner, you will know exactly the result that you are getting and move on from there.

3. No phone number! Hey, what if I need a special gift urgently and no access to internet at the moment when I receive the postcard? You lose a potential client in this way.

Actually, there are 2 more fatal flaws in their marketing and if you are interested to find out more, stay tune for the next writing.

P/S: Call 62210090 and attend a FREE 2 hours Brand Mastery seminar and find out “How You Can Make $1M in Your Biz in 3 Years or less”

When she was a young girl, brain scientist Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor became fascinated with the functions of the human brain. Jill, one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people of 2008, has a brother with schizophrenia, and his brain disorder led Jill to dedicate her career to studying severe mental illnesses as a Harvard-trained neuroanatomist. While she worked to uncover the differences between the brains of people born with mental illnesses and those who were not, something remarkable happened to Jill’s own brain—it went silent.

On December 10, 1996, at age 37, Jill awoke with intense pain behind her left eye—a blood vessel had exploded in the left hemisphere of her brain, and within hours, Jill could no longer walk, talk, read or write. She was suffering from an arteriovenous malformation—a rare type of stroke. While Jill struggled to phone for help, she was aware that the left hemisphere of her brain was shutting down, taking with it her language, organizing and other analytical skills. Without the dominant left side of her brain controlling her thoughts, Jill says her mind went silent, leaving only the right side of the brain functioning. Through the right side of her brain, Jill says her consciousness shifted away from reality—and the trauma her body was suffering through—and into a place of inner peace and Nirvana.

The experience was life-changing. Not only did Jill face years of recovery after her stroke—and major brain surgery to remove a large blood clot in her brain—she also discovered a better quality of life through increased use of the right hemisphere of her brain. She’s now an artist as well as a scientist, creating anatomically correct stained-glass replicas of brains that are sold as fine art. She’s also published My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist’s Personal Journey. The book explains in scientific detail exactly what happened during Jill’s stroke and how she recovered. It also takes a closer look at how the right hemisphere of the brain works and how Jill says people with normal brains can access it to find their own inner peace and improve their quality of life and the lives of others.

Importance: High

Dear XXXXX,

Good afternoon. I am Ryhan’s colleague incharge of Strategic Alliance and Sponsorship for Singapore Movie Fiesta 2008. At present days, we no longer look at just logo credit for sponsorship partner. We specialise in Ideas that sell. In another word, ROI. To cut the story short, before I can propose anything that is mutually beneficial and truly WIN-WIN, I need to understand few issues and appreciate if you address them:

Have you done Mall sales during GSS before? If so, what is the typical size that you need to generate a decent turnover?
What is the average turnover when you have such merchandise sales? In another word, what is your KPI?
What is the promotional mechanics you have in mind for the coming GSS?

I look forward to your reply soonest.

hi ryhan,

in exchange for in-kind type of sponsorship…what do we get in return?

will we be getting some space at the main atrium where the event is so that we can do merchandise sale?

if it is only logo acknowledgement, there’s really no immediate realised ROI benefit, in that case, sorry, we’re not interested.

Hi XXXX, would you be keen to look into in-kind type of sponsorship perhaps? Or maybe we can discuss how we can work together since the event is going to involve quite a large crowd and media coverage from 8Days, Straits Times, Stomp and Lime.

Dear XXXX Tan,

As the official venue for Singapore Movie Fiesta 2008, XXXX has highlighted that you may be interested in being part of this event since you already have a retail outlet at XXXXXX. Please see below,”

The actual sponsorship content was cut.

To be honest about it, I was about to propose a Large Retail Space at the central area of the mall for this brand to do sales on a revenue share basis! I am very sure that it will sell because our event will attract huge traffic consist of young families. By the way, we are expecting 600,000 people will pass thru this event over 5 days! This mean that there is NO COST and NO RISK to them at all while generating a higher profit!

And this so called Senior Marketing Manager did not even bother to find out how this event will benefit his bottom-line, let alone listening the event concept. And I can bet this is the reflection of his result in life too which he constantly missed out Great Opportunity because he is closed minded.

P/S: I sent another side email to show what opportunity he has missed out.

Hi XXXX, by the way, I was thinking of proposing of offering a large retail space for XXXXXX to do GSS sales during our event on a revenue share basis because the key highlights of our event will draw thousands of parents with young children. Nevertheless, we will seek other brand then. Cheers!

The past 1 month have been an interesting and busy period. I throw myself into the world of Event Sponsorship for our in-house project, Singapore Movie Fiesta 2008 (See the post below). A marketing area that I have never experience on such a large scale. I have met at least 30-50 companies general managers, head of marketing, country managers, brand managers, business/media owners and doing countless proposal. It really opened my mind and break my own structure. I love to move out of my comfort zone constantly. So far, I have secured five figure sum cash sponsorship apart from six-figure sponsorship in-kind, a far cry from my mid 6 figure cash sponsorship target. I have to admit that it is was tough facing rejection after rejection, sometime even 3-4 in a day after a long period of prospecting.

Then, I came across this article when I was having lunch today; The headline screamed, “Hellish two-hour death ride for 54″. It was reported that 121 men and women was packed into an airtight seafood container truck just 6m long and 2.2m wide with only standing room. 30 mins into the journey, they screamed and banged on the wall but the driver continue on. An hr later, the screaming and banging stopped and when the truck driver stopped and checked, he flee. 54 illegal immgrants of which 37 are women died after 90 mins of the journey. They were Myanmar illegal workers seeking a better life outside their country after paying S$210 for the journey!

Honestly speaking, I nearly cried while reading this because I can imagine their inhumane suffering to the last breath. This bought new prespective to my work: I am truly blessed. I am blessed that:

1. I sit in an aircon room working on sponsorship proposal that aims to bring result to my partners
2. I get to meet nice corporate executive with nice view and have a decent handshake
3. Everytime, I get a NO, I am closer to a YES
4. Doing what I truly love and passion about and getting paid for it

Let’s hold a minute of silence for those 54 people who just want to work and have a better life.
