Billed as the first fiction out of North Korea, The Accusation is the first book to come from a writer still living under the regime. The stories told are heartrendingly simple stories that reflect on the duplicity and awful ironies North Koreans must encounter every day. One story tells of a woman who uses contraceptives to prevent pregnancy because she realizes just how hard the system is on young children who are forced atone the “sins” of their parents; she can’t bear to bring a child into a country that treats its youth with such harshness as experienced by her husband and young nephew. In other stories, we learn how deceit is rewarded and authenticity of self is suspicious. We learn how hard work and courage can be twisted into vainglorious selfishness.

In a country that excessively safeguards and monitors the story of itself and its people, storytellers such as Bandi are crucial to allow revolt and reform to take root.

The Accusation is an important book for us to read to understand a culture and political climate so foreign to our own. Not only that, it’s a work of great literary force, with parables that will stay with you after you close the book.

A note on my copy: I received a free copy at Booknet’s Tech Forum this March, as part of a Loan Stars promotion. (Haven’t heard of either initiative? Two of my favourite things and encourage anyone in publishing to check out the links if you haven’t!)

The year certainly got off to a great start with reading The Break. I can easily say this will be one of my favourite books of 2017, even though January is not yet over! The Break is the story of a close community of Métis women in Winnipeg and their encounters with violence. The story alternates from the perspectives of various women all connected through family and friendship ties. When a terrible incident of violence happens to one of them, they draw together even closer.

We also get the point of view of the perpetrator, but what’s so unique is the sympathy I felt for the one who did the violence. Rather than look at the good vs the bad guys, this is another book that looks at the history that leads people to violence as well as the brokenness that happens when we reject our family and community. The message seems to be that we are stronger together with our family and community around us.

I’ve been doing a lot of looking ahead these past few weeks. Looking ahead to 2017, and my ambitions for career, for wellness, for finances and for family. But today I wanted to take a moment to reflect on this past year, specifically what reading has meant for me.

At the start of 2016 I started a new job at publisher Dundurn. It’s been a huge positive to work here for the past year. And of course starting at a new publishing house I had the lovely chance to dive into their list of books, getting to know titles and reading those that sparked my interest. So a lot of my reading on Goodreads includes Dundurn books, new and old. A few highlights include:

I’ve also read some amazing non-fiction books on current affairs and politics and hope to continue that trend into 2017. I’m actually proud to say that the two books I’ve finished in 2017 are both non-fiction!

Goodreads did the honours of creating My Year in Books (2016), and I can report that I read 60 books with 9 books being non-fiction / memoir! Oh, man, The City of Mirrors was quite the long read, but I had to read it all after thoroughly enjoying the first two books of the trilogy. Plus got my fantasy quota filled for the year. Here’s a little snapshot of my year in reading:

Having just purchased my ticket to the annual Giller Light Bash, my thoughts are turning to who will win the prestigious honour this year. I’ve only read two books from the six-book shortlist; I’m really excited about both these choices. They are both really strong books that highlight current issues dealt with by women: body image and rape.

13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl is a series of stories about the same woman over her lifetime as she struggles with her weight, but more importantly her self-confidence and ambition that becomes inexorably tied up in how much she weighs.

The Best Kind of People comes from a favourite Toronto author of mine, Zoe Whittall, who creates the story of a family dealing with the aftermath of a beloved father, husband and teacher who’s been charged with rape of three students. The novel presents a rounded view of the issue of rape, and how we as a society distort the issue, treat (or mis-treat) the victims and the accused in such cases. How much do we ever know another person vs project our own desires and motivations on that person?

I’m actually rooting really hard for either of these books to win, if only because they were hugely entertaining, thought-provoking books on my reading list for 2016.

At the beginning of 2016, I boldly stated my bookish resolution to read 50 books this year. It’s a pretty fair goal, considering I do work in the book publishing world and I’m surrounded by books. And yet, it can be hard to find time to read with conflicting calls on my time and attention.

But, working at a new publishing house in 2016 has given me a tasty new list of books to explore, plus I’m often commuting to work on the streetcar with time to read. At almost the half-way point of 2016 (wait, really?!) I’m doing pretty well in my goal.

So far I’ve dove into three fantastic mystery series: Meg Harris Mysteries by R.J. Harlick; Stonechild & Rouleau Mysteries by Brenda Chapman; and the Birder Murder Mysteries by Steve Burrows. You can find some of my reviews on my Goodreads profile.

It’s also fun to keep up with the “hot” books du jour, for instance, Amazon First Novel Award–winner 13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl and much-buzzed-about The Nest.

Looking into fall, I’m sure I’ll be adding more big books from award shortlists and perhaps a few more nonfiction reads as well!

Happy reading!

I finally finished reading Fifteen Dogs. I say finally because it’s been on my list since last fall when it won Canada’s most prestigious fiction prize, the Giller Prize. I also say finally because I’ve been reading it in fits and starts over the past month. Not because it hasn’t held my attention but simply because I’ve been busy with reading for work and for my book club.

However drawn out my reading of this book, I can truly say this book is a literary masterpiece and well deserving of its many award nods. It’s successful in the way it has a driven, exciting and not wholly predictable plot, yet also is laden with layers of meaning and substance that left me as a reader thinking and wondering. I love a book that you can analyse.

I didn’t think I could love a book about dogs. Dogs are the main characters, however they stand as allegorical figures that allows the reader to think about the human condition: what it means to be human, to love, to create art and poetry. What makes us human? Our language, our culture, our instincts, our relationships? These are just some of the questions arising from the narrative in Fifteen Dogs.

I don’t know about you, but my inbox can get a little out of control with messages from retailers, community groups, product companies and a slew of other e-news and e-marketing that comes my way. How do I get so many? I’m genuinely interested in many of the groups or companies, but sometimes the volume can overwhelm. I have some coping strategies, but I digress. What I want to talk about today is one of those tired and trite marketing slogans that’s overused too much at this time of year: New Year, New You!

Ugh.

I think last year that message reached critical mass in my inbox, causing me to throw up my hands in vexation; I just didn’t want to read that message one more time. It just seems lazy and, honestly, doesn’t speak to me. Personal goals don’t have to be tied to the calendar year; they certainly don’t for me.

Ok, I’ll end this rant.

Because today I want to talk about New Year’s Resolutions! No seriously. Are you confused?

At the turn of a new year, I do tend to get on the bandwagon with one type of resolution — the bookish type! The 50 book reading challenge has inspired me for the past five years. I like tracking my reading, so that I can reflect on what I’ve read, what I haven’t read, and what I should be reading. I find it interesting to track what books I’ve dipped into, and having a goal set encourages me to keep track consistently.

I use reader social media site Goodreads to track my reading, but there’s also the 50 Book Pledge you can take advantage of.

In 2015 I read 35 books; impressive considering I was proofreading and copyediting part-time half the year, and caring for a young baby the first half of the year! Reviewing my list, I see I opted heavily for fiction, including 9 mysteries and 5 chick lit novels, as well as reading the Canada Reads shortlist.

For 2016, I’ve set a goal of 50 books (initially I set at 45, but then I thought, let’s do this!). Who knows what 2016 will bring? I’m commuting this winter 3 days a week, so that gives me more time to read. As well, I’ve been getting into a couple new mystery series that will surely have me burning the candle into the wee hours.

Are you setting a reading challenge or goal for 2016? Or do you rather keep your reading leisurely and non-goal-oriented?

Fiction lovers be warned: you will love this novel by Rachel Cusk!

Outline is a novel without apparent plot yet it tells many stories. Our narrator is travelling to Athens to teach a creative writing course. We learn very little about her save for this bit of personal history, yet we learn so much at the same time while eavesdropping on her conversations with the people she meets in her travels. The neighbour on the airplane, the writer friend, the students in her course, and more interesting people pontificate on their particular view of life, relationships and a variety of subjects.

As book’s close, you’ll ask yourself what has actually happened in this book. Not much, if we are thinking of a traditional plot. However, the beauty in this “outline” of a novel is the exploration of life’s mysteries and perspectives through lived experiences. It asks how we relate to other people and how their lives have shaped their outlook on life.

To say this novel is spellbinding is not an overstatement of its merits. Brava Rachel Cusk!

Us Conductors garnered its author $100,000 when the debut novel won the 2014 Giller Prize. One of my personal goals is to read as many Giller-nominated books each year as I can manage. I’m not usually that successful in completing the goal, but I do manage to get through my share of some great Can-Lit selections. Sean Michaels’ novel definitely bumped closer on my radar when it won Canada’s richest literary prize but it was already in range when I heard the theremin’s inventor was the subject.

Us Conductors is a fictional re-telling of the life and work of Lev Termen, the inventor of the theremin musical instrument and many other modern technologies. The narrative focuses on his time in America promoting and securing patents for his theremin, as well as his time spent in Soviet prisons during WWII. The other main thread running through the novel, one that informs the narrative style, is Termen’s love for violinist and theremin player Clara Rockmore.

The fictional Termen narrates through letters and interior monologues addressed to his absent “love-of-his-life” Clara. This means that many passages fall into the second-person POV. Which is a very difficult way to write without drawing the reader’s attention away from the narrative. While I was reading I was torn in my assessment of the success of the writing style. Both the aforementioned second-person POV and the heavy, annoying use of comma splices drew me out of the narrative flow. However, at close of the final page, I will give to Sean Michaels that he created a successful and daring novel. One that uses a tricky writing style appropriately and effectively. Nothing is more annoying that a senselessly difficult writing style for no apparent reason.

You may get a sense of my reserve in heaping praise on the novel. While I’m willing to applaud Sean Michaels achievement and understand his prize win, I cannot wholeheartedly say I enjoyed the novel. For me, it comes down to the focus on the relationship between Clara and Lev–or should I say lack of relationship? OK, they met and had a fun time in the Roaring Twenties New York. OK, she was a teenager to his thirties. But I don’t buy the rest of Termen’s supposed mooning around for decades. The actions of the real Termen’s biography belie all this mooning about. It seems that Michaels is straining to fit this ill-fated love story into a mould that just doesn’t quite fit. I just was more excited about everything else in the story–the spying, the secret assignations, the inventions, the other theremin players, the Russian prisons–than I was about boring Clara.

OK, end rant.

Read this book for its intrigue and for the theremin. I’ll give this 3.5/5 stars.

It was announced that Mark Zuckerberg crowd-sourced his New Year’s resolution, and he decided upon reading a book every two weeks in 2015. Journalists speculate the creator of Facebook will be bringing increased attention to specific books and their authors, much like Oprah’s Book Club elevated certain books in its hey-day.

Oprah was hugely successful with her book club. Her talk show had a loyal following of viewers who easily fit into the expected audience of book buyers and readers. Oprah’s stamp of approval for a book meant a lot to viewers who put their trust in Oprah’s winning taste.

Does Mark Zuckerberg have the same sort of loyalty from his own generation? Will his stamp of approval to a book garner increased sales as people rush out to follow in Mark’s footsteps? And will publishers and booksellers jump on the bandwagon as they did with Oprah Book Club picks, promoting the books as Mark’s picks?

I’m optimistic. Any endeavour that brings books to new audiences and places reading in the public sphere is good in my books!

On that note, happy reading in 2015!
