However, number 2 golfer, Phil Mickelson has not been “cheating” on his wife, but rather with an old golf club. Apprently, Phil Mickelson’s old Ping wedge has bigger grooves, which gives him a leg up on his competition. Phil Mickelson’s wedge is not however, actually illegal according to offcial golf rules.

Even though Phil Mickelson’s choice to use the Ping wedge is technically within the rules of golf, several of his competitors are not happy with Phil Mickelson’s choice to use his Ping wedge. Among them is Robert Allenby who thinks that while “cheating” isn’t the technically correct word, that the old Ping wedge does give Phil Mickelson an unfair advantage which can affect the integrity of the game of golf.

Golfer Scott McCarron does believe that cheating is the right word though. He said of Phil Mickelson’s choice to use the Ping wedge “It’s cheating, and I’m appalled Phil has put it in play…all those guys should be ashamed of themselves for doing that. As one of our premier players, (Mickelson) should be one of the guys who steps up and says this is wrong.”

To give Phil Mickelson a little of my golf advice, if he gets fired or banned he could always sell golf balls.

You got to get past the recruiter and phone screener first. You met with a recruiter, but now she’s not responding to your e-mails. Maybe your background is perfect but you don’t make it past the phone screen. How could it be that you’re “not a good fit” when you’re so clearly made for the position?

Job hunters tend to view recruiters as an unfortunate necessity in the search process, regarding them as the people who don’t respond and don’t really know what the hiring company is looking for.

It turns out that many job seekers have misconceptions about the most basic role of a recruiter. “They don’t understand that we don’t work for them,” said Greg Bennett, a headhunter at the Mergis Group in Cary, N.C. “We work for the client” — the hiring company.

Below are some typical scenarios in which job seekers may find themselves. We asked the recruiters what’s happening at their end.

Scenario One: You think you’re a perfect fit for the position, yet the recruiter isn’t responding to your application or your follow-up calls and e-mails. Potential red flags may include:

You’re not qualified for the job.

    * Like it or not, your work experience may not fit the bill. It could be that the hiring company is looking for 10 years of sales experience and that your 15 years in sales is not attractive. It’s also possible that you didn’t read the posting closely, or at all. “When a job seeker ignores certain stipulations such as a listing that requests local candidates only or has degree requirements that don’t match, it becomes evident that they are answering postings without reading them,” said Sherry Brickman, a partner at Martin Partners, a retained search firm in Chicago. “This is a waste of time for everyone involved as well as frustrating for a recruiter.”

You’re a good fit but not an ideal fit.

    * “[Third-party recruiting] agencies get paid a lot of money to find people that a corporation in need of staff can’t,” according to Michael Rosenberg, manager of sales, productivity and performance at TheLadders. “And with a 15 to 25 percent fee going to the recruiter, corporations want to make sure they hire the exact right person.” In plenty of cases, almost isn’t good enough, especially now that recruiters are pulling from a larger applicant pool.

Your recruiter — or the hiring company — isn’t effectively communicating the job specifications.

    * Sometimes recruiters aren’t able effectively to express what their client is looking for, a result of their own limitations or their client’s lack of specificity. The larger the organization, the more red tape there is, according to Rosenberg.

Your e-mail subject line could be slowing down the process.

    * Effective subject lines in e-mails should reference the position you’re applying for, rather than “Hello” or “Intro,” Rosenberg said. If a recruiter is sorting through hundreds of e-mails a day, it makes her life easier if she receives a cue about the contents of the e-mail.

Your resume may not be conveying your story at a glance.

    * With so little time to devote to each resume, make it easy for recruiters to find what they’re looking for: your last employer and position, your tenure there, and the three most relevant bullet points based on the job you’re applying for. If a quick scan doesn’t yield a compelling career narrative, Rosenberg said it’s possible that your application will never make it beyond the inbox.

Misspellings of any kind turn off some recruiters.

    * Typos may leave the impression that you don’t pay attention to details. Double- and triple-check your cover letter and resume. Better still, have someone with an eye for detail proof it.

A generic cover letter could be your undoing.

    * Recruiters may read the lack of specificity as lazy and/or uncaring, Rosenberg said. Tailor each letter to the particular company, industry and position to which you’re applying.

Superlatives may be getting in your way.

    * For instance, calling yourself the “best” or “greatest” CPA without supporting evidence can be perceived as cocky. “It suggests the job seeker is way too sure of himself and may be tough to work for,” Rosenberg observed. “A recruiter could build a story in their head before they even get you on the phone.”

What can you do? Not much if you’re not qualified, but applying for a specific job and making sure that you’ve dotted all your “I’s” and customized your cover letter will at least ensure you’re getting the attention you deserve.

Scenario Two: You didn’t make it past the recruiter’s phone screener.

Your general attitude could be a mismatch with the hiring company.

    * For instance, your professional-yet-serious demeanor may not work in a setting where a sense of lightness and humor is considered a priority for managers, said Harold Laslo, a staffing specialist at the Aldan Troy Group in New York. Don’t take it personally. The longer a recruiter has worked with the hiring company, the better he’s able to evaluate your candidacy.

You didn’t listen to the questions.

    * During phone screens and interviews, less is often more. Whether the cause is nervousness, self-absorption or other limitations, candidates sometimes provide far more information than a question warrants, according to Marian Rich, a recruiter with Bonell Ryan, a retained search firm in New York. Rich said she often asks candidates to give a quick overview of their careers, probing for details later in the process. “I’m always dismayed at how many candidates launch into an in-depth and very lengthy response,” Rich said. “It can put me off and will certainly raise the question of whether or not this candidate will interview well with a client.”

What can you do? Follow up with the recruiter to ask her why you’re not a good fit. She should be able to provide a concrete reason. If she can do that — and you trust her assessment — let her know you’d like to be considered for future positions.

Scenario Three: You met the recruiter in person, but now he doesn’t think you’re right for the job.

Your work style may not be suited to the position.

    * For example, the recruiter may determine that you thrive in structured work settings, but the hiring company is looking for someone who functions best in an unstructured environment. Once again, recruiters who have placed candidates with the hiring company have a good sense of who would succeed there. It is well within a job seeker’s rights to ask how long the recruiter has worked with a certain company, said Laslo of Aldan Troy.

Your personality may not be a match for certain company or department cultures.

    * For instance, you may think your ambition and assertive personality could only be an asset, but it could signal potential challenges at some firms. “If a candidate has career aspirations and I pick up that they may not have patience before they see advancement or will be badgering HR in regards to advancement, they may not be right for certain companies,” Laslo said, adding that small companies tend to be more focused on personality than large ones.

What can you do? Talk to your recruiter and find out exactly why you’re no longer in the running. Gather as much information as you can and ask if there’s anything about your personal performance that you could improve.

Scenario Four: The recruiter is being vague about why the hiring company doesn’t want to proceed with your application.

She may not have all the information.

    * Recruiters agree that at each point in the application process your recruiter should be able to cite specific reasons why she (or the hiring company) doesn’t think you’re a suitable candidate for the job. But recruiters don’t always have that information if the hiring company is reticent to disclose it for legal or other reasons, said Rosenberg.

She may be reluctant to talk about personal quirks.

    * If the hiring company is troubled by your lack of personal hygiene, for example, the recruiter may withhold the information if she thinks it’s not constructive.

What can you do? Strike a friendly tone when probing for details. Help the recruiter understand that you value his feedback and would appreciate any information he’s able to supply.

Despite its technical shortcomings, BioWare’s first in what it promised to be a trilogy took the role-playing genre to new cinematic heights. Mass Effect 2 is a better game in near every way. From the very first scene, you will be hooked. And the farther you dive into this epic action role-playing game, the better it gets. It fulfills the promise of its predecessor while continuing to push the boundaries of what we should expect in a videogame.
This is the continued saga of Commander Shepard. It’s the future, and all sentient life across the galaxy is in peril. An advanced race of machines known as Reapers is intent on wiping the slate clean. Shepard, a distinguished soldier, has faced this threat and emerged triumphant once, but victory is far from assured. Now Shepard must take the fight to the enemy — a mission that is dubbed suicidal from the outset. Things don’t look very promising, but Shepard has a plan. It involves recruiting the best and brightest from around the galaxy and somehow convincing them their lives are worth sacrificing for the greater good.

These heroes are what drive the story. Their motivations become yours as the experience continues to get better with each addition to the cast. Shepard’s compatriots are fascinating and flawed; captivating and occasionally despicable. The arc of the main tale itself isn’t in itself exceptional, but the characters BioWare has crafted most definitely are. These are some of the most compelling players I’ve ever seen in a videogame — the Drell named Thane is a particular favorite of mine — and the great design and writing isn’t limited to the main cast. The citizens of the galaxy are extraordinary and offer more than enough reason to explore every location and talk to everybody.

All of this is made even better by Mass Effect’s trademark cinematic and interactive approach to conversations. With Mass Effect 1, BioWare introduced a conversation wheel that allowed for fast-moving, intriguing, and player driven cutscenes. Rather than slowly moving through conversations by selecting dialogue from a list, Mass Effect allows the player to quickly choose an emotional response, which generally include an honorable paragon reaction and a snappy renegade remark. The result is that every little dialogue snippet is about as engaging as they come. It was innovative when Mass Effect 1 first came out, and it’s still so far ahead of the curve, backed up by further refinements, including a quick-time interrupt system, and powerful voice acting. Mordin Solus, a Salarian scientist played by Michael Beattie, and Martin Sheen as the Illusive Man, are high points in an all-star cast of voices.

The true strength of Mass Effect 2’s story, however, is in how personal BioWare has made it. If you played Mass Effect 1 through to the end and still have your save data, this game will import your character and all the decisions you made. The central plot will not drastically change, but the experience most certainly will. Some old friends and acquaintances will return – and others won’t – based on decisions you made in the last game. Even the opening moments of Mass Effect 2 can be slightly different.

The actions you take in the sequel only compound this feeling of personalization. By the finale you’ll have made so many decisions – ranging from simple things like whether you play as a male or female all the way up to those governing life or death – that the result is a game that is yours and yours alone. Choices you made in Mass Effect 1 come back to remind you of past good deeds or injustices. Decisions made here affect the final outcome. Reminders that everything you do will be reflected in Mass Effect 3 are everywhere, adding further drama to every conversation. Things you say and do actually matter, and that’s an incredible sensation to get from a videogame.

Even if you didn’t play Mass Effect 1, this game is worth playing. If you’re not importing a character, BioWare simply makes some of the decisions from Mass Effect 1 for you. It’s slightly less dramatic and the story here is often references events in the first game, which might make some bits less thrilling for novices. There are revelations and tantalizing plot twists that Mass Effect veterans will go crazy for. These same moments simply won’t carry the same weight with those hopping in for part two. It’s a bit of a Catch-22 for the designers tasked with the impossible job of pleasing newcomers while still pushing the limits.

Speaking of pleasing people, BioWare listened to every last bit of criticism leveled at Mass Effect 1. That game, particularly on Xbox 360, suffered from a few technical and presentational issues. This sequel is a much, much cleaner experience. Long elevator rides and slow-loading textures are gone, replaced with (occasionally lengthy) loading screens. Generic cut-and-paste side quests and empty planets to explore have been totally ripped out. Pretty much everything that anybody took even the slightest issue with in Mass Effect 1 has been axed or rebuilt entirely.

Even though it’s a cleaner production, Mass Effect 2 isn’t a perfectly polished game. I’ve played through the game twice and during that time experienced sound cutting out, my character getting stuck in the environment and full game crashes. Thankfully, these miscues are infrequent, which allows the art style to shine. Mass Effect 2 is a visual treat, filled with breathtaking landscapes and an awesome attention to detail. If you’re playing on PC and have a powerful rig (I took Shepard for a spin on an Alienware Intel Core 2 Quad 2.00 GHz prcoessor, dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M cards, and 6 GB of memory), it will look even better.

The improvements aren’t only technical. The inventory and skill systems have been made more manageable, streamlined to the point that they might initially appear too thin for a role-playing game. Keep playing, however, and you’ll begin to see strength and depth emerge as you further customize your squad.

One of the biggest reasons why this streamlined approach to character customization works is the retooled character classes. The same six specialization options are back, ranging from the Jedi-inspired biotic users to the technically inclined engineer. This time, however, they’ve been defined and differentiated much more clearly, each getting its own set of weapon specializations and unique skills. Playing as a soldier is a vastly different combat experience compared to the vanguard or infiltrator. Each class has its own approach to battle, which is then further defined by how you choose to outfit your squad and where you assign skill points. By the end of the game, everything about Mass Effect 2 will be shaped by your choices – from the story to the ebb and flow of combat.

Of course, none of this would matter if it isn’t fun to play. Good news. Mass Effect 2 is a lot of fun. The action has been refined to the point that even general fans of shooters will find a lot to like here. It’s not perfect, but the game handles quite well. It doesn’t take long to master simultaneously ripping off rounds from an assault rifle, tossing out a few biotic skills, and directing the two AI driven squad mates to combine raw power with smart tactics. And when things get really rough — and they will, Mass Effect 2 is no cake walk — you can always pull out a heavy weapon and tear the enemy a new one.

Add in fantastic level design and awesome skills like the vanguard’s charge or the infiltrator’s cloaking ability and you have one spectacular virtual playground. Mass Effect 1 toed the line by offering some of the action elements that shooter fans enjoy with some of the role-playing tactics that the hardcore fans of the genre want. The sequel improves both areas for a through-and-through satisfying battle system.

On PC, the heads-up display is a bit different, custom built to work with a keyboard and mouse. Both versions are largely identical, though you will get a few more options for customizing hot keys and skill usage on the PC. Which works better for you will be a matter of personal preference.

An emphasis has clearly been put on ensuring that the combat in Mass Effect 2 never grows stale. Side quests each have their own unique areas to explore — and you’ll have to explore the galactic map, talk to random characters, and find key items to even trigger many of them. The combat zones themselves, however, have been cleaned up to be more straightforward and compelling, rather than repetitive labyrinths. New gameplay twists are introduced frequently with some large quests eschewing combat entirely. There’s a great focus on exploration and discovery here and BioWare has made sure that the reward for doing so is worth the effort.

To forgive is divine, but when it comes to your credit card company, that’s probably not going to happen.

To forbear . . . now, that’s quite a different story.

As more people lose their jobs or otherwise come under financial stress in this economic crisis, many credit card companies are granting one or more types of forbearance to hard-pressed cardholders.

What is forbearance? The most important thing to remember is that it’s not forgiveness; you still must repay your credit card debt. But forbearance programs can offer temporary reprieves from your obligations.

In some cases, you might be able to postpone payments for six months to a year or even longer. Your minimum monthly payment might be lowered. Your interest rate might be reduced. Or some fees might be eliminated.

It depends on your particular situation.

“Our objective is to help customers who are experiencing financial hardship,” said Betty Riess, a Bank of America spokeswoman. “If a customer cannot afford to make regular payments or falls behind on an account, our customer-assistance department proactively reaches out to them.”

Wise consumers don’t wait for that.

Credit counselors and card issuers say cardholders who lose their jobs, encounter medical emergencies or find themselves in other financial predicaments should contact their creditors before the situation becomes acute.

During the last quarter of 2008, as the economy truly tanked, Citi accepted about 350,000 accounts into its forbearance programs, which can offer an adjustment of loan terms or a consolidation of balances.

“Citi is offering new forbearance programs with broadened eligibility criteria, affecting accounts in earlier stages of delinquency,” the company reported Feb. 3 in a progress report related to its participation in the federal Troubled Asset Relief Program. “These include payment incentives, match payments and balance-consolidation programs that accelerate the reduction, or amortization, of card loans without materially increasing the cost to consumers.”

The company said it also was ramping up programs to help customers who are current on their accounts but are beginning to find themselves in need of help.

Meanwhile, Bank of America modified nearly 850,000 credit card loans in 2008, Riess said.

Discover Financial Services, with 50 million Discover Card members, is beefing up its online and call-center operations that serve card members looking for help, Discover spokesman Matthew Towson said. Assistance ranges from individualized payment options to deep — though temporary — reductions of interest rates for people experiencing “severe hardships.”

In addition, Discover stops sending balance transfer offers, blank checks and other promotional mailings to accounts that begin edging into the high-risk category, Towson said.

At JPMorgan Chase, counselors have the option to restructure credit card loans by reducing interest rates, suspending future late or over-limit fees and extending repayment terms, spokeswoman Gail Hurdis said.
Card issuers trying to reduce risk
While all of this sounds socially responsible, it also serves the best interests of card issuers.

The reason: Credit card loans — and don’t fool yourself, every time you charge something to a card, the card issuer is lending you that money — are unsecured loans. That means that if you file for bankruptcy, the credit card company won’t get paid at all.

Thus, card issuers have an interest in keeping you out of bankruptcy, even if that means extending or lowering your payments or otherwise assisting you.

And they have tons of money at risk here.

In 2007, $1.9 trillion in credit card transactions were completed in the United States, according to a Citi study. Right now, credit lines totaling about $4.8 trillion are open in this country.

Citi reports that its loss rate for North American cards was 8% during the fourth quarter of last year, a sharp increase from 5.5% during the same quarter of 2007. Fitch Ratings, in a report released Feb. 4, said it expects credit card charge-off rates soon to breach 8% and to climb to near 9% by late 2009. Charge-offs occur when card issuers give up on bad debt and write it off their books.

Thus, card issuers say they are ready and willing to help you — though the degree of assistance will vary, depending on your situation. Also, remember that interest will continue to accrue during any extended payment period and, sooner or later, your credit card loan must be paid in full.

How to ask for forbearance From Credit Card Companies

If you are in a financial jam and need a bit of relief from your credit card obligations:

Stop using the card and adding to the balance due. You don’t want your card issuer to think you’re taking advantage of the situation.

Call the customer-service number listed on the back of your card.

Explain your situation calmly. If you’ve had a good payment record in the past, emphasize that to the customer-service agent. Ask to be considered for the company’s forbearance or relief programs. It’s really as simple as that. “If you think you’re going to have difficulty staying current with your payments, reach out to your card issuer,” said Bank of America’s Riess. “If customers believe they’re having problems, we want to try to help them.”

The country music sensation now holds the record for the best download debut by a female artist after the new song was picked up 325,000 times in the past week — 39,000 more than Spears’ Womanizer in 2008.

Billboard chart compilers at Nielsen SoundScan have confirmed the tune from the singer’s new film Valentine’s Day will be Swift’s first number one on the Digital Songs countdown; it will also debut at two on the Billboard Hot 100. Both charts will officially be released on Thursday.

Ke$ha’s TiK ToK is the only song that stands in the way of a Swift number one debut. The dance track will claim a sixth successive week at the top.

The record for the biggest opening week belongs to the Black Eyed Peas, who debuted Boom Boom Pow in April 2009 with 465,000 downloads.

The track went on to spend 12 weeks at the top of the U.S. pop charts.
It has also been a good week for downloaded tracks performed at George Clooney’s Hope For Haiti Now telethon on Friday night — Billboard.com reports 334,000 downloads have been registered in less than two days of availability.

Jay-Z, Bono, The Edge and Rihanna’s Stranded (Haiti Mon Amour) was the event’s biggest hit with 131,000, while Justin Timberlake and Matt Morris’ cover of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah comes in second.

It is a guide that allows you to calculate your body mass using a mathematical equation. This guide helps you answer the question, “How much should I weigh?” The resulting number typically lets you know if you are underweight, normal, overweight, obese, or severely obese.
It is important to know where you fall in these classifications to prevent potential health risks. Obesity puts you in a category to have an increased chance of acquiring many health risks, which nobody wants. Some of these health risks are high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and sleep apnea, just to name a few.

You can find out where you fall using a bmi index calculator below.

After using the bmi index calculator, the suggested classifications are listed as:

* Underweight – 18.5 or less

* Normal – 18.5 – 24.9

* Overweight – 25 – 29.9

* Obese I – 30 – 34.9

* Obese II – 35 – 39.9

* Severely Obese – 40 or greater

Please keep in mind that muscle does weigh more than fat. So people, who are very active, like athletes and body builders, can have a higher bmi and not be considered overweight or obese. It is pretty easy to tell if you fall in this category, even without using a bmi index calculator, by looking in the mirror. Fat on the body is soft and can shake, while muscle is hard and tight.

Am I fat for my age and height or am I underweight? Knowing your body mass index using the bmi index calculator can help you stay away from the danger zone. People who are extremely obese tend to have a harder time sticking to a weight loss program. There eating, or should I say overeating, is connected with emotional or psychological issues in many cases.

If the bmi index calculator shows that you are severely obese, or if you are 100 pounds or more overweight, weight loss surgery can be an option to help you lose weight. Your food intake is restricted and/or the food you do consume does not get absorbed fully, when one undergoes this type of surgery.

Please do not take the weight loss surgery option thinking it is the easy way out. Many people who undergo a bariatric procedure end up gaining some or all of the weight back. Where there is a will, there is a way.

So it is important to realize that whether you choose weight loss surgery or a weight loss program, it is just a tool. You still have to make better food choices, use portion control, and exercise, in order to lose weight. The bmi index calculator just gives you an idea of how much danger you may be in, if any at all.

So is it the best way to lose weight? In today’s society, so many of us suffer from poor health associated with obesity or morbid obesity.
Morbid obesity is dangerous because it can lead to numerous health problems, as well as a diminished quality of life. Many of us know we should lose weight and some of us absolutely must if we want to live. The big question is whether you opt to “do it on your own”, or if you use the advances we have access to in the medical field to reach your desired end.

Both options have the same intended goal, to lose weight. Those who opt for a weight loss program to help them lose weight usually have a longer time before they see drastic changes. They will also have to use more self control, willpower, and exercise in order to succeed.

If you qualify, there are two popular weight loss surgeries being performed today. The two options most practiced are gastric bypass surgery and the lap band. Both procedures have the same intended goal, weight loss. You may have chosen this route on your own, or it may have been suggested to you by someone else.

We will explain and discuss these options in detail as we go further, as well as the gastric bypass complications. The primary goal of weight loss surgery is to medically assist morbidly obese people get themselves down to their ideal weight. These bariatric procedures are designed in order for you to achieve greater weight loss and longer lasting results than dieting and exercise alone.

Weight loss programs have also had success in assisting heavy people in reducing pounds, improving their health and body image. What is important to keep in mind is that whether you choose diet and exercise alone, or acquire the assistance of a surgeon, these are just tools to help you lose weight.

Our goal is to try to put everything out on the table so you are able to see the entire picture for yourself. You do not want gastric bypass complications making your life worse instead of better. Once you know all of the facts then you can make an informed decision as to what is the best way to lose weight, whether it be weight loss surgery or a weight loss program.

Nintendo has announced that DSi XL will be released in the UK on March 5th, 2010.

Nintendo has finally revealed the launch date for its Nintendo DSi XL for Europe which is now due to hits British shop shelves on 5 March.

As many of you will know from coverage of the Japanese launch of the DSi XL, this latest version is bigger than the current gen model.

The DSi XL offers two 4.2-inch screens, which are 93% bigger than the screen on the Nintendo DS Lite and also boasts a larger pen-like stylus said to be more comfortable and better to control.

Nintendo also highlights the wider viewing angle of the DSi XL, seemingly angled at making sharing games or other content better.

The new handheld device will launch in wine red and dark brown, with, Nintendo says, “a glossy sheen on top and matte finish on the underside that provides excellent grip when resting on a table or other surface during gameplay”.

It will arrive pre-loaded with “Dr Kawashima’s: Little Bit of Brain Training: Arts Edition” and “Dictionary 6 in 1 with Camera Function”.

Pricing has yet to be confirmed but back in October Nintendo said “the retail price of the Nintendo DSi XL is expected to be higher than that of the Nintendo DSi”.

The console will be available in two colors – wine red and dark brown – and will come pre-loaded with the DSiWare software Dr Kawashima’s: Little Bit of Brain Training: Arts Edition, Dictionary 6 in 1 with Camera Function and Flipnote Studio, as well as the Nintendo DSi Browser.

The console comes with a new larger pen-like stylus in addition to the standard stylus. According to Nintendo, this new stylus has been designed to make “extended stylus gameplay more comfortable to allow better control.”

DSi XL will have the same capabilities as the DSi, and the retail price is expected to be higher than that of the DSi.

Some of us are getting out of balance. Problems associated with computers are CDT (Cumulative Trauma Disorder), RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury), or the worst SOZS (Spaced Out Zombie Syndrome).

My latest tweet showed the food that’s provided for free at my current job.

As with television, you can become addicted to a computer. You sit down at your computer, and seven hours later you finally notice your rear end is numb, your neck and shoulders are in a vice, you are hungry, thirsty, tired, and your spouse has left with all the kids. How did that happen? Where did your mind go? And why did you accomplish so little in that time?

Much has been said about how to support yourself physically on the computer. Invest in a good chair, maintain erect posture, use a wrist rest, and use an anti-glare screen. But what about proper mental and emotional support? For example, if you look at a two-dimensional screen at close range for many hours, it can limit your binocular vision, depth perception and peripheral vision. The constant hum of electronic equipment can switch off auditory skills. These imbalances can cause you to over focus, and become so engrossed in the details of what you are doing on screen. Consequently, you lose track of the big picture, your priorities and goals. Also, the electromagnitic field of a computer can negatively affect body meridians, which in turn affect energy, mind and emotions.

Below are some tricks you can use to stay alert, creative, positive, productive, clear and healthy on computer. Take a 3 minute break every half hour. Set up a timer that will go off reminding you to break. Here are some ideas that will re-balance your system. Try a different one each time:

Drink water: Electrostatic energy around a computer can dehydrate you, which significantly slows down the firing of synapses in your brain. Drink a least 8 oz of water for every hour you are in front of a computer.

Reconnect head and heart: This two minute exercise helps re-energize your mind, moves you out of confusion and helps you feel more positive. Sit in a chair, cross your legs at the ankle, then cross your arms at the wrist and interlace your fingers. Sit like this with your eyes closed breathing deeply for one minute. Then uncross your legs and arms and sit with your fingertips touching for another minute. This second pose is called The Spock Pose.

Neck rolls: Tight neck and shoulders can impair binocular vision and binaural hearing. Roll your head from side to side letting your chin drop to your chest. Go slowly and breathe deeply.

Gaze into the distance: Go to a window and scan the horizon taking in three dimensional shapes off in the distance. This will balance out your vision.

Stretch: Constricted hamstrings, sacrum, spinal support muscles and shoulders can directly effect your mental functioning. Take a few minutes to lengthen these muscles. A great yoga pose to do this is the downward facing dog. Bend forward at the waist and place your hands flat on the floor about three feet in front of you, so that your body is in a V-shape. Keep you feet flat on the floor if possible.

Fun: Fun restores emotional balance. Dance, sing, play solitaire (not on computer, use real cards), hug a tree, go visit a co-worker (don’t e-mail them), play with your pet, call a friend and compliment them on something, read cartoons, look in the paper for a movie to see tonight, plan a trip to the tropics.

Be easy on yourself. Working on a computer can trigger certain debilitating belief systems such as perfectionism and the need for completion. Notice when you hear yourself saying “I’ll just finish writing these last four e-mails”, then I’ll take a break. Create a list of Anti-Zombie Techniques nearby, such as the ones listed above, or add some of your own. Pick one thing on the list and go do it for three minutes. Tiny breaks throughout your day will ensure survival and success on your high-tech adventures.

Many people assume if they optimize their website for a number of keywords then all search traffic will go to their homepage. Actually the opposite is true; search engines look for relevant pages, not relevant websites. Search engines don’t just “think” in terms of your site as a whole; they mostly care about the page or pages relevant to the keyword searched for.

Let’s use Wikipedia to illustrate the point. Wikipedia is a great example, because if you perform a search for just about any keyword, a Wikipedia page is likely to show up in the top five results. If you search for “Napoleon,” for example, the Wikipedia result will take you to Wikipedia’s Napoleon page, not to the Wikipedia homepage.
That’s how search engines work: They look for relevant pages. To optimize your site, you’ll need to keep that fact in mind. Instead of thinking globally, mentally break your site up into different parts and pieces. If you want to rank high for a particular keyword, you probably will need a separate page focused on that term if it is not relevant to your homepage.

Basic Page Optimization

We’ll use Google to illustrate the following points; in general the other major search engines function in the same way.

Google looks for these things to identify the theme of a web page:

Page Title: The page title is the text that appears in the blue bar at the top of your browser. Google uses the page title (also called the title tag) to identify pages and show users the relevance of the page. The page title also shows up as the link when a search result is returned. Keep title tags short and precise, between 8-9 words. Every page should have a different unique and relevant page title.

Metadata: While meta tags aren’t as important as they used to be, including your main keywords in your page metadata can help Google differentiate between different pages. Make sure your metadata is specific to each individual page and that it doesn’t include any words that are not related to the text of that page.

URL: The URL is the web address of a web page. Including relevant keywords in the page URL can help your rankings, so work with your webmaster to create static URLs with keywords included. Strike a balance, though – don’t try to have 10 different keywords in a URL.

Text: The content of the page should be relevant to the topic mentioned in your title tag, metadata and URL. Make sure you mention your keywords as well as other words that relate to the basic theme of the page.

Please note: Lots of people focus on things like keyword density (the number of times the keyword is mentioned) and keyword patterns (where the keyword is found, like in the first paragraph, first sentence, last sentence, etc.). Google algorithms continue to become more intelligent, and in my opinion, your best bet is to instead write your content with the user in mind. Write for your visitors and you will almost always create content that Google “likes” too.

Think of it this way: Being number one in the search rankings is important, but if you’re number two and you’ve optimized your content for the user, you’ll probably get more repeat visitors and sales than if you create pages focusing exclusively on getting better search rankings.

If you currently operate a website, your webmaster can help you with each of the items above.

If you’re developing a new site, be sure your site is set up properly from the ground up. Make sure you can create title tags for each page, name each page with a separate URL, and include page specific metadata. The last thing you’ll want to do is to go back later and correct any basic site structure problems that you could have done right the first time.

Take Advantage of Internal Links

Internal links are links from pages on your site to other pages on your site. (In this case I’m referring to links within your text, not to navigation bar links.) You can improve your page rankings by linking directly to pages on your website by using one of your keywords as the link text. Google will follow those links and know your page is relevant for that topic. You’ve probably noticed Wikipedia uses internal links extensively; whenever a word is used that has a relevant article somewhere else on Wikipedia, that word gets an internal link.

Let’s go back to our Napoleon example. If a page on your site is devoted to Napoleon, and you also have a page devoted to the Duke of Wellington, link occurrences of “Duke of Wellington” on the Napoleon page to the Duke’s page – and when you mention Napoleon on the Duke’s page, link back to the Napoleon page. Your site will be more convenient for visitors and you will improve your search rankings too.

Get Relevant Inbound Links

Inbound links are links to your site from other sites. Relevant inbound links are links from sites that contain content related to your site. If you sell computer hardware, an inbound link from a software site is relevant; an inbound link from a pet supply store is not.

Google follows inbound links and uses them as a popularity contest of sorts; the more inbound links you have from relevant sites, the higher your page rankings. When you have links from “authority” sites – sites Google ranks highly – your pages will rank even higher. Again, getting inbound links is not just a way to optimize your site for SEO purposes; each inbound link also creates a natural way for a visitor to find you by following that link.

Your goal is to get as many relevant inbound links as possible. Find sites that provide related products or related services that don’t specifically compete with you. Ask for an inbound link to the relevant page. (You may also decide to link back to their site, but only do this with relevant content that makes sense for your readers. Don’t trade links with the sole purpose of better rankings.)

Then find industry hubs for your niches. Search for “cooking articles” or cooking directories and some of the results will be directories that exist to help people find cooking related articles. Also try using words like “organization” or “non-profit” with your keywords when you search. In some cases you may have to pay a small fee for an inbound link, but if the site in question is a relevant and trusted source, the cost of that link could make sense.

You can also find bloggers related to your niches; send them a great article or resource and they may create a new post and link back to you. Here’s a simple approach: Go to Technorati, type in a keyword, find blogs related to your keywords, send them an article, and see if you can get a link back to your page. Some visitors will find you simply by clicking on that link, and at the same time Google will rank your page higher.

Note: Some services automate the process of link exchanges. Exchanging links with non-relevant sites may provide a short-term boost but will catch up to you in the long run, and Google can eventually penalize you because almost all of your inbound links are irrelevant. For example, pet-related sites shouldn’t link to cooking-related sites, plus you won’t get many visitors from those irrelevant sites.

Pay particular attention to getting links from directories. Trusted directories include sites like Yahoo Directory, botw.org and Business.com. If you have quality content you can often collect links from major directories.

Check Out Your Competitors

Search for your keywords and check out the pages that rank highly. How many times is the keyword used in the text? How is the title tag written? Which keywords are in the URL?

You can also see how many inbound links your competitors have. On Yahoo, enter the text link:www.(nameofsite).com and you’ll see all inbound links to that page. Those same sites may also be willing to link to you. If multiple pages ranked in the top 10 have links from similar sites, go after getting those links first – those sites are probably trusted sources.

Get Your New Site Noticed

Google will eventually find your new website, but you can speed up the process. The best way is to get inbound links from trusted sites; when Google crawls those sites it will follow that link to your site – and you’ll get noticed.

You can also submit your site directly to Google for crawling. Using the basic Site Submit can take months; a better approach is to submit your site at Google’s Webmaster Central. You’ll have to add a small piece of code to your site’s HTML code so Google can verify you are the owner of your site, so your programmer may need to help you. (The process only takes a few minutes, though.) Your pages will then be crawled and hopefully indexed in days instead of weeks or months.

Yahoo also has a site submit process. Search “submit site” on Yahoo and you can get details on free site submissions as well as paid submissions and submissions to the Yahoo Directory.

Above All, Consider Your Visitors

Google looks at a variety of factors for ranking your pages. Content is important, but don’t add new content just to get Google to visit.

Why? Your site needs to provide good resources for your visitors. Build your site for your audience and you’ll naturally do the things search engines want and you’ll rank better. For example, many of the hugely popular blog sites don’t focus on SEO; they concentrate on their audience and on getting exposure. As a result, they have a lot of links and the search engines rank them highly. Search engines want people to find what they are looking for; build your site with your audience in mind and over time the search engines will reward your efforts.

Getting Crawled

To find out how often your site is crawled, enter “site:www.(nameofyoursite.com)” on Google and you’ll see all your pages Google has indexed. The “cached” link next to each pages indicates the last time that page was cached. (On average it takes about two weeks for Google to check out non-dormant sites and re-rank pages. Some sites are indexed every few days; some major sites get updated multiple times per day.) Check this every day and you’ll quickly determine how frequently your site is crawled.

At the same time you’ll get a sense of how well your entire site is performing. If you have 400 pages and only five are indexed, you likely need more inbound links and optimization on the non-indexed pages.
