New Fraud / Con Tactics

Here is a list of fraud/con tactics used by conmen/conlady/robbers etc. I took it from a forum and I find it really interesting, credits goes to MPIK. Be alert of such cases !!!

(1) Today I passed by a building which has an ATM machine. There was an old man looking at me. Suddenly, he called me. He said he didn't know how to read, so he gave me his ATM card and asked me to help him withdraw money from the ATM machine. I answerd 'NO!! If you need help, ask the security to help you.' Then he said 'nevermind..' and continued to find other people to help him...

REMEMBER : ATM machines have CCTVs. If you help him he will later claim that you have robbed him or stolen his ATM card. Besides, his ATM card could
be a stolen one. So please be careful of these tactics.

(2) Suddenly your house lights go off. From your window you find that your neighbours still have lights. So you go out of your house to check the Meter Box. But once you open the door, a knife will be pointing at you and preventing you from closing it. This is when you will be robbed and injured.

REMEMBER : Even though your electricity suddenly goes off, DO NOT open your door immediately. Look around to see if there is anything unusual
or if there is any noise around.

(3) This is another incident. You may have heard it before, it is about a lady who she saw a kid crying by the roadside. When she spoke to the kid, the kid told her he was lost and wanted her to take him home. The kid even gave her a paper with his house address. So she took him home. But when she rang the door bell, she had an electric shock. Later when she woke up, she was naked in an empty room.

REMEMBER : Being such a compassionate and helpful person might not be a good thing these days. Pass this on and girls, please be careful..

(4) One day, there was an old lady outside my house holding 2 packets of sweets. At first I thought she was our neighbour and wanted to give us these packs of sweets as a gift. But then when she spoke, I can realised that she was foreigner. I could not understand what she was talking about. I guessed she must be asking for money.I sensed there was something wrong and immediately closed the door and ignored her. Later, I found she and an accomplice robbed someone else down the road.

(5) I was at the ATM machine to withdraw some money. Behind me, there was an old lady. She asked me whether I was able to withdraw my money because she said she had problem with her machine. Suddenly a small girl came up beside me. The small girl was squeezing infront of me. I thought she was just naughty and playful. But then, the small girl put her hand at the tray of the ATM machine where the money comes out, ready to take away my money. I sensed something wrong and immediately pushed her away. Later I realised that the small girl and the old lady worked together. She was trying to steal my money while the old lady was trying to distract my attention by asking me questions!

REMEMBER: BE VERY CAREFUL when you are at an ATM machine and be alert.
Look out for anyone suspicious around you!

(6) My parents are retired and stay at home most days. One afternoon, a young stranger went to their house and said his motorcycle had no more petrol and the petrol station was too far for him to push his bike there. So he asked my parents for an empty coke bottle to buy some petrol. He said he will pay RM2 for the bottle. So my mum took one coke bottle for him. He really took out the money from his pocket, but it was a RM 100 note. He told my mum he had no small change and asked my mum to give him the change. Luckily my mum was smart. She just told him to take it for free.

REMEMBER : obviously that note is fake!! Who would want to pay for RM2 for an empty coke bottle!! It's very OBVIOUS that that stranger is a trickster.

(7) This happened in Bali . A newly married couple were having their honeymoon at the hotel. When both are in the changing room, the wife suddenly went missing. The husband was very anxious and went around to find her. He asked the hotel staff to help him find her. Then he thought his wife was just playing hide and seek. So he went back and waited for his wife. After a few hours, he decided to call the police. 3 weeks passed and there was still no news about his missing wife. So he went back and was very dissapointed and sad. A few years later, he came back to Bali , to watch a 'FREAK SHOW' in an old house. He saw a dirty and rusty metal cage.
Inside there was a lady without limbs. Her body including the face was full of scars. When he had a closer look at her face, he was shocked to find that it was her missing wife put there as a means for begging.

(8) This happened in Shanghai . A few years ago, a lady reported to the police that her cousin sister was missing in the shopping complex. But after 5 years, one of her friends found her cousin sister begging at the road side one of the streets in Bangkok , Thailand . The worst thing is that
her cousin sister has no more limbs and her body was tied to a lamp post with a shackle (metal chain).

(9) Let's just shorten this story. DO NOT open your house door when you hear the sound of a BABY CRYING!! It might be a trap! Women in the house must be alert to this trick. The police said it is the work of a robber or murderer using the recording of a baby crying to attract your attention. This normally happens at night and when you are alone in the house.

(10) I read an email that was sent by my friend. Her friend, known as A, went to Luo Hu Commercial City with 2 friends, B and C. Luo Hu Commercial City is the Shenzhen counterfeit goods distribution center. There are many people there. It's also near to the ShenZhen train station and Hong Kong 's Luo Hu Port. C went to the toilet at the shpping centre while A and B waited outside. After waiting for a long, time they felt uneasy and went into the toilet to look for her. When they went in, there was nobody inside. Both were scared and they called C's phone. There was no reply. So they reported to the police. The police asked them whether they had seen anyboby suspicious going into the toilet. Both said there were none and its impossible to bring a life person out of the toilet without them noticing!. Then A remembered seeing a cleaner pushing a trolley in, and then coming out. The police told them that was not the 1st time such a thing happened. The police suspected a gang of criminals who were always attacking women in the the toilet of shopping complexes. They use cleaners to kidnap people to harvest their organs for sale.

REMEMBER : please be careful when using the toilet. Donot go to the wash room or toilet ALONE!! Please at least have a partner with you.

General Guide - Malware Removal From USB Drive

USB Drive (aka Pendrive) is the most common storage device. However most of the people always had their USB Drive infected with all sorts of virus, malware, trojan, spyware or whatever you call it. For a normal user, they might not know if their USB Drive is infected or not. Want to know how to check and remove all the malware from your storage device? Read the guide below.

1. Whenever we plug in our USB Drive, Windows XP will prompt us with a window as shown above. Most of the time, most of the people will scroll down and click "Open folder to view files". If the USB Drive is infected with malware, clicking "Open folder to view files" will execute the malware in the USB Drive and it will spread and infect the Windows in the background. So, first thing when we see this window, we must click Cancel.

2. To open your USB Drive, Click on My Computer. Do not double click on the USB Drive because it works the same with "Open folder to view files" in first step, it will execute the malware if the USB Drive is infected. In order to access the USB Drive, refer to the screenshot above. Click on the drop box at the address bar, then select the USB Drive, in my case it is KINGSTON (I:).

3. My USB Drive is clean and free of malware, therefore I can't show you screenshot of my USB Drive, instead I asked my friend to send me a screenshot of his USB Drive as example to eleminate the malware. Refer to the picture above, that is what you see normally after you access your USB Drive. However there could be some malware hiding in your USB Drive which you don't know.

4. Next, Click Tools then click Folder Options. Click on the View Tab. Under Advance Settings scroll down and click Show hidden files and folder - ON, untick Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) - ON then it will prompt something and click YES. Refer to the screenshot above if you don't know what I mean. After that click Apply.

Follow the Steps Below if you having problem with Step 4. Else you can skip it and go to Step 5.

If Folder Options is disabled but Registry Editor is still working in your system, then you can enable Folder Options by editing Windows Registry. Click Start then click RUN. Type regedit in RUN dialog box and press Enter. it�??ll open Registry Editor, now go to following keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Policies\Explorer
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Policies\Explorer

In right-side pane, check whether a DWORD value named NoFolderOptions exists or not? If it exists, delete it. But sometimes Registry Editor is also disabled. Click Start then click RUN. Type following in RUN dialog box and press :

REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableRegistryTools /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

Now after enabling Registry Editor, you can re-enable Folder Options.

There have been cases of viruses like Kavo changing back the hidden files back to hidden after you enable it. To fix this, Go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden\SHOWALL

find for CheckedValue, it should be a DWORD key. If it is not then delete it.

5. After finishing Step 4, if your USB Drive is infected with malware, you should be able to see some weird file like shown in the first sceenshot above such as Autorun.inf. Right click at Autorun.inf then click open with Notepad. You should be able to see what is in the second screenshot. It targets the malware whi.com and now you can close the Autorun.inf. Next you can delete all the files associated with the Autorun.inf and suspected malware files . Then Empty your recycle bin.

If your Windows has been infected with malware already, the malware will be automatically infect your USB Drive when you plug in your USB Drive. So following the steps above will be useless. It is only useful for you to prevent your Windows from malware.

The Simpack Back Then

Do you know how much is the simpack cost 8 years ago? I dug out my drawer and found this simpack and it was sold RM238 back then. Another one was RM88. Compare to the simpack nowadays, the difference is huge, I don't know how much it cost for a new simpack now but the latest hotlink I bought last year was RM8.80. It was a glory to have a handphone when Nokia 3310 is a big hit. Its really cool for a Form 1 student to go around the school and show off their handphone to their friends. I was one of them =P haha. But nowadays it is very common for a student to own a handphone. Even a primary school student owns a handphone, can you imagine that? Anyone can afford a simpack with the price tagged below RM10 and the cheapest handphone you can get is below RM100 as well. Of course it is a low-end monochrome phone but it can work much more than what a phone can do back in 2000 which cost RM1000++. Its consider rich to own a phone at RM1000++ 8 years back and nowadays it becomes very common for a RM1000++ phone. A phone is only consider high end when the price is above RM2000. This box is epic and must be kept properly and I doubt still got people keeping it.

PSP Firmwre V5.02 Coming Soon

Just a quick update, we�??ll be making PSP firmware update 5.02 available shortly. This update improves system software stability during use of some features, including the PlayStation Store.

there will be a new firmware coming soon, not much detail about the changelog but I will include the changelog when it goes official later. Probably this might be the update to counter the hack for PSP-3000 aka PSP Brite.

This FAQ is not fully written by me. I copy, edit and compile them for easy reference. Anyone can feel free to post question and find any error made by me and I will get the FAQ updated.

What is GPS?

GPS stands for Global Positioning System. It is a satellite-based navigation system made up of a network of 24 to 36 satellites placed into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense. GPS was originally intended for military applications, but in the 1980s, the government made the system available for civilian use. GPS works in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day.

How much do I have to pay to use GPS service?

GPS service is FREE of Charge. There are no subscription fees or setup charges to use GPS. However, navigational software is not free. GPS receiver will only tell you where your location on Map is but if you want to go to a place with real time navigation, you need buy the full version of software so that it will guide you step by step to go to a place.

What do I need to use GPS?

Now you know GPS is FREE of Charge. You are interested to know what do you need to use GPS.

There are different type of GPS device/configuration.

Handheld Unit - The handheld units (these have smaller screens) are generally used by people who go hiking, mountain biking, tracking (to map new trails or roads). (This one is not suitable for us, continue reading below.)

Automotive Unit - The Automotive units are generally designed for car navigation. Some of these models come with Bluetooth and MP3 capability. All these units have an external storage card via SD card or equivalent. (I won�??t elaborate much on this, because we are in Handphone Section)

Mobile PDA Unit - The 3rd category are for those who prefers to use their PDA (whether be it the Windows Mobile platform, Palm OS platform or Symbian OS platform) for road navigation, phone and PDA functions. There are 2 different case: first is you can use the built in GPS receiver in the PDA or Smartphone or the second case is you buy a GPS receiver (GPSr) and pair with your PDA / Smartphone through Bluetooth. NOTE : Usually GPSr tends to receive faster signal and better signal than built-in GPS in PDA or Smartphone.

What is A-GPS?

A-GPS stands for Assisted GPS.

Assisted GPS, generally abbreviated as A-GPS, enhances the startup performance of a GPS satellite-based positioning system. It is used extensively with GPS-capable cellular phones as its development was accelerated by the U.S. FCC's 911 mandate making the location of a cell phone available to emergency call dispatchers.

Conventional GPS has difficulty providing reliable positions in poor signal conditions. For example when surrounded by tall buildings (resulting in multipath), or when the satellite signals are weakened when a GPS device is indoors or under trees. Some newer receivers are better at handling these situations.

In addition, when first turned on in these conditions, some non-assisted GPS units may not be able to download the almanac and ephemeris information from the GPS satellites, rendering them unable to function until a clear signal can be received continuously for up to one minute.

An A-GPS receiver can address these problems in several ways, using an assistance server:

* The assistance server can locate the phone roughly by which cell site it is connected to on the cellular network.
* The assistance server has a good satellite signal, and lots of computation power, so it can compare fragmentary signals relayed to it by cell phones, with the satellite signal it receives directly, and then inform the cell phone or emergency services of the cell phone's position.
* It can supply orbital data for the GPS satellites to the cell phone, enabling the cell phone to lock to the satellites when it otherwise could not, and autonomously calculate its position.
* Simply capturing a brief snapshot of the GPS signal, with approximate time, for the server to later process into a position.[2]
* By having accurate, surveyed coordinates for the cell site towers, it can have better knowledge of ionospheric conditions and other errors affecting the GPS signal than the cell phone alone, enabling more precise calculation of position. (See also Wide Area Augmentation System)

As an additional benefit, it can reduce both the amount of CPU and programming required for a GPS phone by offloading most of the work onto the assistance server. (This is not a large amount for a basic GPS �?? many early GPSs utilized Intel 80386-class 16MHz CPUs or similar hardware.)

A typical A-GPS-enabled cell phone will use an internet connection to contact the assistance server. Alternatively, it may use standard non-assisted GPS, which is slower and less accurate, but does not lead to network charges for data traffic, which can be considerable.[3] Some A-GPS solutions do not have the option of falling back to conventional GPS (as with the new iPhone 3G).

High Sensitivity GPS is an allied technology that addresses some of the same issues in a way that does not require additional infrastructure. However, unlike some forms of A-GPS, high sensitivity GPS cannot provide instant fixes when the phone has been off for some time.

Will I be charged when using A-GPS?

Yes, since you will be sending and receiving data from server, your TELCO will charge you accordingly based on the GPRS/EDGE/3G used.

I would like to use GPS completely FREE, can I turn off A-GPS?

Yes you can turn off A-GPS when you are using Nokia MAP version 2

Press Options > Tools > Settings > Internet > Go Online at start-up > No.

P/S: Garmin does not use A-GPS. Nokia MAP does.

If I did not follow the route during navigation by the software, what will happen?

In most case, it will recalculate a new route and guide you to the destination you chose earlier.

I will write a general guide on how to use GPS for Nokia Symbian phone later.

PSP-3000 aka PSP Brite Hacked?

Datel has created a pandora like battery that will put PSP-3000 into service mode. That allows user to downgrade their firmware whenever they want. According to them,

It will come with the option to toggle between a service mode and normal mode, and also features a built in LED power gauge. Look out for the LITE BLUE TOOL when it goes on sale from November 28th priced at $19.99 in the UK market and $29.99 across North America.

we can toggle between service mode and normal mode, which is very handy as we don't have to pandorize and unpandorize it. However, Datel is famous for their ~~thieving~~ tools where they take all the free stuff from internet and commercialize it. Its a little shock to see they actually hack it first before Dark_AleX do. But having a LED indicator ON, doesn't means that you can install cfw or hack anything. Remember TA-088 mobos on PSP-2000? Dark_AleX explained about the preIPL and why it cannot be hacked on TA-088 yet. Click HERE for the explaination. Probably everyone should calm down and stop spreading it like wildfire until REAL confirmation where CFW can be installed on PSP-3000. Then that is the time we all gonna celebrate.
