Think, Believe, Dream and Dare

An eight-year-old boy approached an old man in front of a wishing well, looked up into his eyes, and asked: "I understand you're a very wise man. I'd like to know the secret of life."

The old man looked down at the youngster and replied: "I've thought a lot in my lifetime, and the secret can be summed up in four words.

The first is think. Think about the values you wish to live your life by.

Excerpt from BABYDOLL'S HONOR "A BOY AND HIS HORSE OF VALOR"

"On New Year’s Eve, Mom and Dad let me stay up until after midnight to welcome the New Year in. On TV we tried to watch the ball drop in Times Square, but the old black-and-white television set we owned was too blurry to really see what was going on; at least we could hear it. It was very exciting listening to the countdown, and then at the stroke of midnight we opened the front door and all yelled, 'Happy New Year!' Guns and fireworks were going off in the distance, so Dad got out his shotgun and fired it in the air a few times while Mom and I banged pots and pans together. We had a wonderful time, but most of all, it was great to see a very difficult year left behind."

The story started out 'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, except one little mouse!"

A garbage-free day

One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport.

We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking

space right in front of us.

My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches!

The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us.

My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy.

And I mean, he was really friendly.

So I asked, 'Why did you just do that?

This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!'

This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call,

'The Law of the Garbage Truck.'

He explained that many people are like garbage trucks.

They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of

disappointment.

As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it

on you.

Don't take it personally.

Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on.

Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the

streets.

The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day.

Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so …

Love the people who treat you right.

Pray for the ones who don’t.

Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it!

Life Steps

A special Thanksgiving

"A special Thanksgiving," an excerpt taken from the book BABYDOLL'S HONOR --

"For Thanksgiving that year, we didn’t have enough money to buy a turkey or anything. But Dad said, 'We’re going to have a bird in the oven anyway.'

That morning he said he had some errands he had to run, so he drove off. A little while later he was back. He pulled in the driveway and was all smiles as he climbed out of the truck. As he walked in the house, Mom and I could see something in his hand rolled up in newspaper.

'Whatcha got there?' she asked.

Still with a smile on his face he said, 'I got your bird for Thanksgiving dinner.'

Mom and I both had to laugh as he unrolled the paper to see this scrawny, freshly cleaned and plucked chicken inside. One of the farmers he was helping to put up fencepost gave it to him. He had told Dad if he stopped by Thanksgiving morning, he would give him a little extra bonus in appreciation for all of the hard work he had done.

It was great. Mom baked the chicken whole in the oven just like a turkey. Then she made a stuffing casserole, boiled some potatoes, and made homemade gravy. To top it all off, she used some apples she had in the refrigerator, and made a homemade apple pie. As we prepared to eat, I was surprised when during our dinner prayer Dad gave thanks for all the good things in our lives—and didn’t say a single thing about anything we didn’t have. All three of us agreed; it was probably the best Thanksgiving dinner we had ever had."
