I fell in love with a girl on Youtube today. I'm glad it happened because I know what it is like now, love at first sight. Tragic, shocking, as unexpected as first breath. Though I'll never be able to legitimize my ardor, I'm happy for it, and expressibly more sad.

In the video, the girl I fell in love with appears for eight seconds. I cannot find her anywhere else on the internet. Some Integral theorists know who I am, maybe even Wyatt Earpy Himself knows. But I can’t sign this essay with my real name, for reasons that will become clear. And that is a shame because this is going to be one brilliant essay.

I’ve always felt an annoying pull/push to do things that often make no money, or maybe kinda make a little money, like astrophysics, writing, teaching, spiritual practice, philosophy, etc – all morally degenerate activities in our capitalistically sensible society. Below is a poem I wrote about Ken, more or less a Pindaric ode, which was traditionally used in ancient Greece to celebrate philosophers (as well as generals, athletes, etc.). The structure is three stanzas of ten lines each, which represent thesis, antithesis, and synthesis, respectively. Or good news, bad news, integral news. So in the first stanza Ken's a bodhisattva, in the second one he's a bastard, and in the third one he's just Ken :-)

In fact, this is my first Pindaric ode (damn you, Pindar!), so with that caveat, check it out and let me know what you think.

Here we were, enraptured and engorged. Tormented and pleased. With faces and bodies that ceased to mean else but glowing tributes to the entity of ‘us’. Little alcoholics with nothing but sober exuberance. Lost in endogenous delight, organic euphoria, even whilst the clink of our empty bottles comprised a sprawling prelude to physical love.

It was in these happy days that the weight of our affection undid the weight of our world. Responsibility as a token and as a real thing funneled into the sustenance of ‘us’. To say so without waxing caustic makes me happy. So happy.

Pot Smoker?

Both of the following essays, laying out different perspectives on marijuana use, came in on almost the same day, and we thought we’d post them both and let you decide. Of course, there is some merit in both of them, it’s just very interesting to read them together. For the record, I myself am not a weed afficiando, and am actually known as kinda not a drug guy in general (including psychedelics)—except tons of antibiotics, Rx, etc. But responsible use is clearly the order of the day. I also happen to believe that, given the actual effects of the laws themselves—creating illegal and black markets, etc.—one can make a very good case for legalization of many now illegal substances.

This November, we are offering an Integral Field Course to complement the on campus and online courses at JFKU. Far from being a mere ‘lumper,’ as those unfamiliar with the details of his work might claim, Ken is a unity-in-diversity theorist: he skimps on neither the unity (as the dividers do) nor the diversity (as the lumpers do). He’s a meta-genius that sees both the extraordinary details of the trees, but can also see the majesty and meaning of the whole forest. NEW YORK - Today's college students are more narcissistic and self-centered than their predecessors, according to a comprehensive new study by five psychologists who worry that the trend could be harmful to personal relationships and American society.

At 8:30 PM on Tuesday, December 5, 2006, while Becca and I were watching a movie, I had a grand mal seizure that was quite severe. Although these are common with CFIDS/REDD/ME, it has only happened once to me before, as far as I can tell. A really major grand mal seizure can kill you. Although this one didn't do that, it came damn close, and was in any event severe enough to precipitate ten more equally severe seizures-one after another after another. By the time they got me to the ER and stabilized-about 12 hours later-not only had I suffered around a dozen grand mal seizures in a row, I had essentially flat-lined three times and had the electric paddles applied to my chest three times-overall, a pretty gruesome ordeal.

Every one of the eight physicians (each specialists) who worked on me, told me afterwards that they honestly did not think I would pull through. While writing the blog, Adventures in Practice: I Hate the Witness, I was almost positive that I wasn’t going to post it. Something about the chaotic nature of the topic, the choppiness of my writing, or the idea of publicly sharing an unresolved issue in my practice had me thinking that it wasn’t appropriate to post it on Ken’s site. Even after sharing it with Colin and Corey—who both told me to post it—I remained hesitant.

It wasn’t until people began e-mailing responses that I saw my initial reservations more clearly. I feared that an unknown number of unknown people were just waiting to judge me. I just finished reading the recent WIRED feature on The New Atheism. The trinity of active mainstream atheists (Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Daniel Dennett) are at it again evangelizing the gospel of the God-less society.

For the most part, I agree with them. Belief in God is not required and it's the cause of so much suffering around the world via religious extremisms. However, their approach is too fundamentalistic for my taste. While I personally don't limit the idea of God to its Christian or Muslim or Jewish concept, I also don't think that logic and rationalism alone could ever take the place of faith and religion. It's like saying that integral calculus can be taught to students without them learning basic algebra.

Traleg Kyabgon Rinpoche is President and Spiritual Director of Kagyu E-Vam Buddhist Institute in Melbourne and E-Vam Institute in the Upstate New York.

Traleg Kyabgon Rinpoche was born in 1955 in Nangchen, Eastern Tibet. He was enthroned as the Supreme Abbott of Thrangu Monastery at age two by His Holiness Gyalwa Karmapa. Father Thomas Keating, a writer and teacher considered by many to be one of the few genuinely realized Christian saints in the world today, is a founding member of the Spirituality branch of Integral Institute. At the age of eighty-one, he continues to be a prominent voice in the Christian Centering Prayer movement through the organization he founded, Contemplative Outreach, an international network committed to renewing the contemplative dimension of the Gospel in daily life.

Keating, born in New York in 1923, entered the Cistercian Order in Valley Falls, Rhode Island in 1944 and was appointed Superior of St. Benedict's Monastery of Snowmass, Colorado in 1958. Three years later he became Abbot of St. Joseph's Abbey of Spencer, Massachusetts, before retiring to Snowmass—a small mountain community of just over a dozen monks—in 1981, where he remains today.

Diane Musho Hamilton is a dharma successor of Genpo Roshi, and is his first successor in the Big Mind lineage. I have seen Ken a few times this past week, the last time was Saturday night. Each visit had completely torn my heart out in a way I have never before felt, seeing Ken in the condition that he was in was honestly one of the most painful (yet luminous) experiences of my life. Really feeling the bottomless depth of my love and respect for him was so completely overwhelming for me; as it still is.

Today when I was at the loft, I was absolutely stunned by the improvement, almost like he had regenerated overnight. He is still really fucked up, as this blog conveys, and will be rehabilitating for awhile--but I just want to reassure all of us who love Ken so deeply that the difference was absolutely like night and day. I have some extremely unfortunate news to report concerning an incident that happened late last Sunday night (July 23rd). The following letter—written by Ken to the I-I managers—explains a series of unfortunate accidents that have left him not that much far removed from functionally quadriplegic. Without assistance, he can’t stand up, walk around, sit down, lie down or any other of the 100 simplest actions. We believe that he will make a recovery but we expect it to take six months to a year. Last weekend, Kristin Hahn—Jennifer Aniston’s Production Partner—took a detour from a family trip to Aspen to visit the Loft. It was nearly a decade ago when Kristin first read Grace and Grit--the compelling story of Ken and his wife Treya’s five-year journey through Treya’s illness, treatment, and death. After being approached by Producer/Director Steven Brill, regarding the vision to bring Grace and Grit to the silver screen, Kristin took the book to a meeting with Jen, who, upon seeing it, said, “I know that book, what are you doing with that book?”

A while ago I've watched video segments of The Root of All Evil?, hosted by Richard Dawkins. In it Mr. Dawkins takes left and right stabs at religion while championing the scientific approach. As much as I enjoyed watching Mr. Dawkins intellectually and verbally dueling with religious fundamentalists, I couldn't help but be saddened by what Mr. Dawkins was trying to accomplish: thrash religion and faith altogether as "the root of all evil" and elevate the scientific rationality as the only antidote to religious fundamentalism. [Note: According this Wikipedia entry, "Dawkins said that the title "The Root of All Evil?" was not his prefered choice, but that Channel 4 had insisted on it to create controversy." So there.]

On Integral Naked we recently featured an interview between Ken and John Mackey, CEO of Whole Foods. In it, Ken offered an eloquent breakdown of an integral approach to politics, explaining in seven and a half minutes how every major political theory in human history has spilled out of the AQAL model.

For me, the AQAL model is a truly psychoactive map, in the very best sense of the word.
