In it's next move in a Social Media Strategy, Chevrolet goes big with an interactive Superbowl App, Chevy Game Time!

The basics are this:

A 2012 C6 Corvette Grand Sport Convertible (MSRP $78,560) will be one of the top prizes in the 2012 Super Bowl sweepstakes by Chevrolet
Chevrolet will give away 20 Chevrolet during the contest including a 2012 Chevrolet Volt (MSRP $40,235)
Other cars being given away in the contest include 2 Camaros, a LTZ Cruze, a Silverado and a Sonic

Other prizes include 20 sets of Bridgestone tires valued at $599 each, 2,500 Papa John's large pizzas valued at $11 each and 46 Motorola Droid Razrs valued at $699 each.
Even though contestants are urged to download the Chevrolet app from either the Android Market or the iTunes store to play and answer trivia questions, an alternate method of entry can be found on Chevy's Web site.
This is the next step in Chevy's attempt to interact with the public with new technology. Leading up to Chevrolet's Centennial celebration Chevy had a vote on the greatest Chevy of all time but you needed to have a Facebook account to login and participate in the event. That was later followed up with another Facebook app called Chevy's Ride of Your Life which after answering a few questions, took you on a "ride" of pictures not only from your own Facebook page but from places you spent time at in your life.
This is another opportunity for Corvette to target the younger market that it so desperately needs to attract as we get ready to move to the next generation Corvette.

ALMS: Revised Driver Pairings For Corvette

Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia will be full-season drivers in the No. 3 Corvette C6.R, Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner will co-drive the No. 4 car.

A new alignment of drivers will pilot Corvette Racing's new Compuware Corvette C6.R race cars when they make their competition debut at the season-opening 60th Anniversary Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. With additional testing following the announcement of the 2012 driver roster, the team has now finalized the lineups for the twin Corvettes.

Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia will be full-season drivers in the No. 3 Corvette C6.R, joined by Jordan Taylor as third driver in endurance events (Sebring, Le Mans, and Petit Le Mans). Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner will co-drive the No. 4 Corvette C6.R, with Richard Westbrook joining them as third driver in the three long-distance races.

"As part of our comprehensive review of Corvette Racing, we considered every element of the program, from the chassis and engine to the driver pairings," said GM Racing Director Mark Kent.

"Preseason testing and data analysis suggested that a revised driver alignment could improve the team's overall performance. Certainly physical size is a factor in minimizing the time required for driver changes during pit stops, but we also evaluated the drivers' individual styles and their preferences on chassis setups. With these pairings, we can minimize compromises and maximize driver confidence.

"This new alignment also combines experienced and younger drivers," Kent added. "We expect the veteran drivers to mentor the younger drivers, accelerating the process of learning and development."

This new driver alignment sees Magnussen, 38, return to the No. 3 Corvette C6.R that he drove from March 2007 to August 2010. The Dane will co-drive with Garcia, 31, who moves from the third-driver role he began in 2009 to a full-season campaign in the American Le Mans Series and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The team's newest member, Jordan Taylor, a 20-year-old from Apopka, Fla., joins Magnussen and Garcia as the third driver in the No. 3 Corvette C6.R.

Tommy Milner, 25, of Lake Mary, Fla., joined Corvette Racing in 2011 as a full-season driver in the No. 3 Corvette C6.R. Milner now moves to the No. 4 Corvette C6.R alongside Oliver Gavin, 39, a Corvette Racing driver since 2002. Richard Westbrook, 36, will mark his second year as third driver in the No. 4 Corvette C6.R.

Corvette Racing will introduce its new driver lineup at the Sebring Winter Test on February 8-9 in preparation for the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring on March 17.

ChevyCorvette C7 prototype spied testing!

The Corvette is the very definition of a halo car, and the fact that 2013 marks its sixtieth year in production is nothing short of a miracle. The seventh-generation Corvette is still a model year away, during which time Chevy plans to send off the C6 with a special edition 60th Anniversary 427 Convertible.

Development of the C7, however, continues at full speed, and we have the very first shots of a prototype being tested in cold weather to prove it. The car in question is wrapped in vinyl covering, underneath which hides the familiar black-and-white swirl paint job we see so often on prototypes. Even still, we can identify some aspects of the evolution that will take place between the C6 and C7.

For one, comparing profile shots of this prototype with the C6, it's apparent that the front wheels have moved farther forward, increasing the dash-to-axle ratio and likely the wheelbase. The rear end also appears to be larger, with a higher deck lid and slightly longer overhang. We also noticed that this prototype's side mirrors are a different shape than the C6's, and its dual tailpipes are positioned closer together to form a perfectly spaced line of four pipes.

There's no evidence of a split rear window and a mid-engine layout is clearly not in the cards. These photos should put those wild rumors to rest, but what's under the hood and how the interior has been improved are still unknowns.

It all started 59 years ago today

On this day in 1953, a prototype Chevrolet Corvette sports car (EX-122) makes its debut at General Motors' (GM) Motorama auto show at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. The Corvette, named for a fast type of naval warship, would eventually become an iconic American muscle car and remains in production today.

In the early 1950s, Harley Earl (1893-1969), the influential head designer for GM, then the world's largest automaker, became interested in developing a two-seat sports car. At the time, European automakers dominated the sports car market. Following the debut of the Corvette prototype at the Motorama show in January 1953, the first production Corvette was completed at a Flint, Michigan, plant on June 30, 1953. The car featured an all-fiberglass body, a white exterior and red interior, a relatively unremarkable 150-horsepower engine and a starting price tag of around $3,500 (not including taxes or an optional AM radio and heater). In an effort to give the Corvette an air of exclusivity, GM initially marketed the car to invitation-only VIP customers. This plan met with less-than-desirable results, as only a portion of the 300 Corvettes built that first year were sold. GM dropped the VIP policy the following year; however, Corvette sales continued to disappoint. In 1954, GM built around 3,600 of the 10,000 Corvettes it had planned, with almost a third of those cars remaining unsold by the start of 1955.

There was talk within GM of discontinuing the Corvette; however, GM rival Ford launched the sporty two-seat Thunderbird convertible in 1955 and the car quickly became a hit. GM didn't want to discontinue the Corvette and look like a failure next to its Big Three competitor, so the car remained in production and performance enhancements were made. That same year, a Belgian-born, Russian-raised designer named Zora Arkus-Duntov became head engineer for Corvette and put the car on a course that would transform it into a legend. Duntov had applied to work at GM after seeing the Corvette prototype at the 1953 Motorama show. According to The New York Times: "Once hired, he pushed through the decision to turn the Corvette into a high-performance sports car with a succession of more powerful engines. Chevrolet offered a 195-horsepower engine on the 1955 Corvette, a 240-horsepower engine on the 1956 Corvette and a 283-horsepower engine on the 1957 model." During the second half of the 1950s, Corvettes began setting speed records on the racing circuit.

After taking the tour with the GM Motorama, the EX-122 became a plaything for the engineering department. The 6-cylnder engine was removed and an 8-cylinder engine was installed, and it was used for various performance demonstrations. It gave such a good account of itself that immediately it was decided to abandon the 6-cylinder engine in regular Chevrolet Corvette production and supplement it with the new 8-cylinder as standard equipment.

The car was then purchased by a member of the engineering team for his daughter to drive to school. He sold the car in 1959 when his daughter left for college. The new owner was the one who realized how special the car was and began to accumulate documentation about the car.

In 2002, Kerbeck Corvette of Atlantic City, purchased the EX-122 from his estate. They began an exhaustive restoration to take the car back to it's original Motorama condition with one exception. The 8-cylinder engine installed by Zora and his team was left in the car making EX-122 not only the world's oldest Corvette but the first ever 8-cylider Corvette as well.

Although the car does travel the country many times a years for shows as well as being on loan for special events for General Motors, most days it can be seen at Kerbeck Corvette's Atlantic City showroom where Corvette enthusiasts are welcome to stop by and see the car and take pictures with it. Corvette Racing Signs Jordan Taylor

Corvette Racing, one of the more successful American Le Mans Series teams, has elevated one of the youngest professional drivers. The team has signed 20-year-old Jordan Taylor to join the highly experienced quartet of Oliver Gavin, Jan Magnussen, Antonio Garcia, and Tom Milner for the season’s longest races: Sebring, Le Mans, and Petit Le Mans.

Corvette Racing has won eight ALMS titles and seven class wins at Le Mans; to hire a driver as young as Taylor shows that the team thinks a lot of his skills and potential.

“The level of competition in the 2011 American Le Mans Series GT category was intense, and we expect it to be just as fierce in 2012,” said GM Racing Director Mark Kent on ALMS.com. “Corvette Racing has been working hard over the winter to develop a complete package of cars, drivers, team, and technology that will be able to win in this extremely competitive environment.”

Taylor started his pro career in 2008 with a GT ride with Beyer racing in the Rolex 24 and a DP drive in the Brumos Porsche 250. Taylor was back with Beyer in 2009, and drove for Racers Edge in 2010. In 2011 Taylor moved to Autohaus, where he finished second in the team championship and tied for third with his teammate Bill Lester in the driver’s championship.

“Corvette Racing is one of the most iconic names in motorsports, and joining this team is a huge opportunity for me, “ said Taylor on ALMS.com. “There are certainly going to be challenges as I learn the capabilities of the Corvette C6.R race cars, become familiar with the team, adapt to new tracks, and race with new competitors. It’s going to be amazing to race a Corvette at Sebring, LeMans and Road Atlanta, and I can’t wait to get started!”

Corvette Marks 60 Years of Performance with 427 Convertible

Chevrolet today unveiled the 2013 Corvette 427 Convertible Collector Edition – the

fastest, most capable convertible in Corvette’s history – as well as a 60th Anniversary Package

that will be available on all 2013 Corvette models.

“The 2013 model year will be historic for Corvette, marking its 60th Anniversary and the final

year for the current ‘C6’ generation,” said Chris Perry, vice president, Global Marketing and

Strategy for Chevrolet. “We couldn’t think of a more fitting way to celebrate these milestones

than bringing back one of the most-coveted combinations in the brand’s history – the Corvette

convertible and a 427 cubic-inch engine.”

The 60th Anniversary Package and 427 Convertible will make their public debut at the Barrett Jackson collector car auction in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Jan 21, and will arrive at U.S. Chevrolet dealers early this summer.

Corvette 427 Convertible Collector Edition

The Corvette 427 Convertible blends elements of the Z06 and ZR1 models to create the fastest

and most-capable convertible in Corvette’s history.

Its heart is the 427-cubic-inch (7.0L) LS7 engine from the Corvette Z06. Rated at 505

horsepower (377 kW) and 470 lb.-ft. of torque (637 Nm), it is the most powerful engine ever

installed in a production Corvette convertible – and, like the Z06, the 427 Convertible is only

available with a six-speed manual transmission.

The LS7 was co-developed with the Corvette Le Mans-winning GT1 engine and features

lightweight titanium connecting rods and intake valves, as well as racing-inspired high-flow

cylinder heads and a dry-sump oiling sy

stem. It is assembled by hand at GM’s Performance Build Center, where customers who purchase the 427 Convertible Collector Edition can purchase the Corvette Build Experience option and assemble the engine that will power their new car.

Supporting performance elements in the Corvette 427 Convertible include the driveline and rear

axle system from the Corvette Z06, a rear-mounted battery and standard Magnetic Selective

Ride Control. The standard 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels are wrapped in ZR1-style

Michelin PS2 tires. Lightweight machine-face Cup wheels – introduce d on the 2012 Corvette

Z06 with Z07 and Corvette ZR1 with PDE performance packages – come standard and include

unique gray-painted pockets. Black Cup wheels or chrome ZR1-style wheels are also available.

The 427 Convertible also features several carbon-fiber components that help reduce weight,

including:

Carbon fiber raised hood (introduced on the 2011 Z06 Carbon Edition)
Carbon fiber Z06-style fenders
Carbon fiber floor panels
The “CFZ” carbon fiber front splitter and rocker panels are optional on the 427

Convertible, and included with the 60th Anniversary package

The weight reduction brings the 427 Convertible’s curb weight to 3,355 pounds (1,522 kg).

Combined with its 505-horsepower LS7 engine, it gives the 427 Convertible a power-to-weight

ratio of 6.64 – or one horsepower for every 6.64 pounds of vehicle mass. That’s better than:

Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet – 6.90
Audi R8 5.2 RSI Spyder – 7.58
Aston Martin DBS Volante Convertible – 7.82
Ferrari California Convertible – 8.31

The combination of low mass and high output will make the 427 Convertible one of the fastest

convertibles in the world, delivering estimated 0-60 performance of 3.8 seconds, quarter-mile

performance of 11.8 seconds, lateral acceleration of 1.04 g and a top speed of more than 190

mph.

The 427 Convertible is available in 2LT, 3LT and 4LT trim levels and will carry a unique vehicle

identification number sequence, similar to the Corvette ZR1.

Corvette 60th Anniversary Package

All 2013 Corvette models, including the 427 Convertible, will be available with a 60th

Anniversary Package, featuring an Arctic White exterior with a Blue Diamond leather-wrapped

interior with suede accents. Convertible models will have a blue top.

Additional content includes a ZR1-style rear spoiler, special badging, gray-painted brake

calipers and the “60th” logo on the wheel center caps, steering wheel and seat headrests. An

optional graphics package adds full-length racing stripes in Pearl Silver Blue, including a tonal

stripe stitched into the convertible top, extending the graphic theme over the roof.

For 2013, all Corvettes will feature 60th Anniversary badges on the fascias and the “waterfall”

panel on convertible models, as well as 60th logos in the instrument panel gauge cluster and on

the sill plates.

Charity Auction at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale

The first Corvette 427 Convertible offered to the public will go to the highest bidder at the

Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale collector car auction, on Saturday, Jan. 21. Proceeds from the sale will benefit AARP’s Drive to End Hunger initiative.

A legacy of 427-powered Corvettes

Early 427-powered Corvettes, particularly convertibles, offered from 1966 to 1969 are some of

the most-coveted and collectable Corvettes ever produced.

The first 427-powered Corvette rolled off the assembly line for the 1966 model year. Two

performance levels of the 427 were initially offered – an “L30” version rated at 390 horsepower

and the “L72,” which cranked out 425 horsepower. Both were rated at 460 lb-ft. of torque.

The range of 427 engines grew in 1967, with the addition of the “L71” and “L88” options. The

L71 added a unique triple-carburetor induction system that helped boost output to 435

horsepower. Known to collectors as “427/435” cars, these ’67 models – especially the

convertibles – are especially sought-after collector cars.

The “L88” delivered 430-horsepower (with a single four-barrel carburetor) thanks to racing-tuned aluminum heads. Intended for customers who would immediately transform their new Corvette into a race car, the L88 was installed in just 216 production Corvettes between 1967 and 1969.

In 1969, a special “L89” 427 engine combined the L71’s induction system with the L88’s

aluminum heads, offering maximum horsepower with an approximately 100-pound weight

advantage over the standard iron heads. Also in 1969, Chevrolet built two “ZL1” 427 Corvette

coupes. The ZL1 engine was essentially an all-aluminum version of the L88, with the aluminum

cylinder block and heads offering a tremendous weight advantage for racing. More of the

engines were sold as crate engines to racers.

By 1970, the big-block engine grew to 454 cubic inches, just as the trend in high-compression,

high-performance engines was beginning to wane. The four-year run of 427 Corvettes was

already established as the golden era of performance

Commemorative Collector Edition and Anniversary Edition models

Rare and low-production examples of the Corvette have been around since its 1953

introduction, but Chevrolet didn’t begin building commemorative models until 1978, when the

25th Anniversary model – also known as the Silver Anniversary Corvette – was offered. The

Corvette was in its third generation then and at the close of that epoch in 1982, a Collectors

Edition was offered, as well.

Those special models launched what has become a tradition for the Chevrolet Corvette, which

has offered milestone anniversary and generational collector-edition models ever since. The

2013 Corvette 427 Convertible represents the first time a Collector Edition and Anniversary

Edition are being offered in the same year – and available on the same car.

Corvette Community Comes Together for the St. Judes Children's Hospital

Evan Thomason was 10-years-old when he lost his battle against cancer on September 22. While the medical and research staff at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital was not able to save Evan, they managed to give him five years he might not have otherwise had with family and friends.

With the blessing of his mom Melissa, Corvetteforum will dedicate its fundraising efforts for St. Jude during 2012 to the memory of Evan, who touched so many people with his courage, positive attitude and joy for living.

Some of you had the chance to meet Evan and Melissa when you visited Memphis for the annual Corvetteforum visit to St. Jude, others know about him from what they have read about Evan on Corvetteforum. For those who didn’t know Evan, here are a couple of links that will give you some insight:

The (soon to be) End of the Line for the 6th Generation Corvette

This past summer, Mark Reuss visited the Bowling Green Assembly Center – the home of the Corvette – and announced a significant, multi-million dollar investment to upgrade the plant. During his remarks, Mark told the audience that there were two model years (2012 and 2013) remaining for the current generation of Corvette.

Recently, Alan Batey, GM Vice President of Chevrolet sales, informed dealers attending the regional Chevrolet dealer meetings what their sales goals would be for Corvettes in the 2012 calendar year and what Corvette training requirements would have to be completed to be eligible for initial production of the next generation Corvette. This is based on the anticipated limitations that will be applicable to the initial production of the next generation Corvette.

These announcements make evident that one of the most exciting Corvette generations is coming to a close. Kerbeck Corvette would like to take some time to share with you some details around the 2012 and 2013 model can be prepared for the end of the C6 Corvette.

Information Regarding 2012 Corvette Model Run

The current 2012 model run which features the Chevrolet Centennial Edition Corvette will end in May 2012. The final consensus for 2012 Corvette is scheduled to occur during February 2012 period, and the last cycle to submit orders for the 2012 model run will occur in March 2012.

The completion of the 2012 Corvette model run is also the last opportunity for dealers to order the current Chevrolet Centennial Edition Package (RPO: ZLC) featuring the Carbon Flash metallic paint, and Carlisle Blue exterior color (RPO: GLF). The Centennial Edition package, and the Carbon Flash and Carlisle Blue exterior colors will NOT be offered for the 2013 model, and will end production BEFORE the rest of the 2012 Corvette model run. Under the current schedule the last time we will be able to order Carlisle Blue is 02/09/12 and the last chance to order the Centennial Package will be 03/01. The last week to order ANY 2012 Corvette will be 03/15.

Keep in mind that these dates are flexible and could change a week or two in either direction. If you are interested in either of the Centennial Edition Package or the Carlisle Blue exterior color, it is suggested you contact us now to check current availability or to order your desired 2012 Corvette model.

Information Regarding 2013 Corvette Model Run

The 2013 model run is scheduled to start production in May 2012. New model year Corvettes usually don’t start production until the last week or so of June so this signifies a move up in production.

The 2013 model run is the final model run for the C6 Corvette. This means for many customers, the 2013 model run will be the last opportunity to purchase the current Corvette models, including Grand Sport, Z06 and ZR1 In addition, the 2013 model run marks the 60th Anniversary of this Great American Sports Car. GM will be sending us information about the exciting changes for the 2013 Corvette and we will be sharing it with you in the coming weeks.

The 2013 Corvette production period is expected to run for approximately nine months with production to end sometime around February 2013. This does not mean that the C7 Corvette will be out early. The next model run will NOT immediately follow the end of the 2013 model run since the Corvette Assembly Plant in Bowling Green, KY will need a few months to retool the assembly lines for production of the 7^th Generation Corvette.

The Coming of the Next Generation Corvette

Suffice it to say the introduction of any next generation Corvette is one of the most highly anticipated introductions in the automobile industry. The expected arrival of a new generation Corvette generates a lot of showroom excitement and traffic. It also requires the dealership’s sales and service teams to sharpen and improve their performance and technology skills to meet the needs of the Corvette customer. It is for this reason that any Chevrolet dealer seeking to sell and service Corvette must agree to invest in special tools and training for the dealership’s personnel. Since we have been the World’s Largest Corvette Dealer for 18 years in a row, Kerbeck Corvette is ready to meet all of Chevrolet’s requirements and the Corvette community’s expectations!

It doesn't sound like much but you never can tell.

While looking through the lists of cars going through the Barret Jackson auction next week I saw a big Chevrolet Bowtie where there should be a picture of a car for Lot# 3040. This, of course, got my attention right away so I had to read further. The description says:

"A special Chevrolet model will be revealed during the auction where bidders have the opportunity to take home this one-of-a-kind vehicle. Proceeds to benefit AARP Drive for Hunger. Will be sold at approximately 2pm Saturday January 20, 2012.

Chevrolet has had a history of auctioning off special cars at this auction for charity dating back to when, in 2008, they auctioned off the first 2009 Corvette ZR1 for $1,000,000 with the proceeds going to the American Red Cross.

After that, they have auctioned off other cars including the first 2012 Centennial Edition Corvette Z06 and a 2012 Camaro ZL1.

So, that leads us to wonder what Chevy his hiding behind the curtain on Lot# 3040? While GM has remained mum on the topic, most people believe that the C7 Corvette will be introduced in 2014 and that 2013 will be the last year of the C6 generation.

While it's much too early for Chevy to show anything on a new model that's at least 2 years away we could be looking at a special edition Corvette. 2013 will mark the 60th Anniversary of the Corvette and many people are hoping to see a 60th Anniversary Edition, but again GM has been very tight lipped.

Of course, the rumor mills have been going strong about a Camaro ZL1 Convertible as well. Or, the mystery car may not be a Corvette or a Camaro. The much anticipated 2013 Malibu is getting ready to hit the dealer's lot and could make a preview here. Or maybe they've got something brand new up their sleeves.

Whatever they are planning the one thing we can be sure of is that we won't be disappointing. These charity auctions have raised a lot of money for some great causes and have featured some very special cars and we expect nothing less this time around!

As kids across the country anxiously await Santa’s arrival, OnStar wants to help keep families aware of Ole’ St. Nick’s whereabouts.

On Christmas Eve, OnStar Advisors will provide specific location-based updates on Santa Claus’ annual trek around the world based on data received in partnership with the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD).

Beginning at 7 a.m. EST on Christmas Eve, OnStar subscribers, including Corvette owners with active OnStar accounts, can press the blue OnStar button in their vehicles to request a “Santa Update.” OnStar advisors will share Santa’s current location through 5 a.m. EST Christmas morning.

“We see this holiday tradition as staying true to keeping subscribers connected in ways they never thought possible,” said Terry Inch, OnStar vice president, Sales, Marketing and Business Development. “We know many of our customers will be glad to know Santa’s location information is just one blue button press away.”

NORAD uses its North Warning Radar System, geo-synchronous satellites with infrared sensors and other technologies to monitor Santa’s Christmas Eve travels and share the information with children and families around the world.

"Learning where Santa was throughout the evening last year made my 4-year-old, Ashley, giggle every time,” said Ryan Edward, an OnStar subscriber. “It’s a great way to keep the kids entertained while traveling to family and friend’s homes.”

For the last few months, General Motors has been sending out certificates to individuals selected to receive an addition rebate if they purchased a new GM vehicle. The Target In Market Retention and the Target In Market Conquest Certificates were worth $3,000 towards a new Corvette.

In September Chevrolet added a nice little surprise for Corvette owners. Anyone who currently owned any year Corvette with a valid registration would automatically be issued a certificate worth $3,000 towards a new Corvette and they did not need to trade in that Corvette if they didn't want to.

That program was scheduled to expire at the end of October. However, more good news came for Corvette owners when the program was extended through 01/03/12!

Well, all good thing must come to an end. In a recent email from our Chevy District Manager, it was noted that the $3,000 Corvette Owner Loyalty Rebate will not be extended beyond the current 01/03/12 expiration.

Other incentives scheduled to end at the same time for Corvettes include the $1,500 Dealer Cash, the $2,000 Lease Conquest Rebate, the GM Card Top Up and the USAA Member Rebate.

Milestone LS9 assembly at Performance Build Center comes 56 years after introduction

WIXOM, Mich. – General Motors today will build its 100-millionth small-block engine – 56 years after the first production small block – representing an engineering legacy that continues to deliver greater performance and efficiency through advanced technology.

Chevrolet introduced the small-block in 1955 and the production milestone comes in the same month the brand marked its 100th anniversary. The small-block engine has been used in GM vehicles around the world and is currently found in global Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac vehicles, as well as Vauxhall in the United Kingdom and Holden in Australia.

“The small block is the engine that brought high-performance to the people,” said David Cole, founder and emeritus chairman of Center for Automotive Research – and whose father, the late Ed Cole, was the chief engineer at Chevrolet and oversaw development of the original small block engine. “There is an elegant simplicity in its design that made it instantly great when new and enables it to thrive almost six decades later.”

The milestone engine is a 638-horsepower supercharged LS9 small block – the power behind the 205-mph Corvette ZR1 – which is hand-built at GM’s Performance Build Center, northwest of Detroit. It represents the fourth generation of the small block and is the most powerful engine ever built by GM for a regular-production car. GM will preserve the engine as part of its historical collection.

The small block has been adapted in almost innumerable ways throughout the auto industry and beyond. Updated versions of the original Gen I engine are still in production for marine and industrial applications, while “crate engine” versions offered by Chevrolet Performance are used by thousands of enthusiasts every year to build hot rods. The 4.3L V-6 used in some Chevrolet and GMC full-size trucks and vans is based on the small-block, too, but with two fewer cylinders. All of these versions contribute to the small block’s 100-million production milestone.

“This tremendous achievement celebrates an engineering triumph that has reached around the globe and created an industrial icon,” said Sam Winegarden, executive director and group global functional leader - Engine Engineering. “And while the small-block’s enduring design has proven adaptable to meet performance, emissions and refinement challenges over the years, it has more importantly delivered them with greater efficiency.”

Current small blocks engines feature all-aluminum cylinder block and heads in car and many truck applications to help save weight and contribute to greater fuel economy. Many applications feature fuel-saving technologies such as Active Fuel Management – which shuts down four cylinders in certain light-load driving conditions – and camshaft phasing, which continuously alters valve timing to optimize performance, efficiency and emissions.

The 430-horsepower (476 kW) LS3 version of the Gen-IV small-block helps the 2012 Corvette accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about four seconds, run the quarter-mile in just over 12 seconds and achieve a top speed of more than 180 mph – all while achieving EPA-estimated highway fuel economy of 26 mpg. That compares favorably against many sports and performance cars:

The 2012 Audi R8 is EPA-rated at 21 mpg on the highway with a V-8 engine
The 2012 BMW 650i coupe is EPA-rated at 23 mpg on the highway with a V-8 engine
The 2012 Nissan GT-R is EP-rated at 23 mpg on the highway with a turbo V-6 engine.

It also compares favorably against many vehicles known more for soccer practice drop-offs – and fuel economy – than quick lap times on a road course:

The 2012 Toyota Sienna minivan is EPA-rated at 24 mpg with a four-cylinder engine
The 2012 Subaru Legacy sedan is EPA-rated at 25 mpg with a flat-6 engine
The 2012 Nissan Maxima sedan is EPA-rated at 26 mpg with a V-6 engine.

“The small-block engine delivers guilt-free performance,” said Winegarden. “It is the quintessential V-8 engine and a living legend that is more relevant than ever.”

GM also announced Tuesday that the fifth-generation small-block under development will feature a new direct-injection combustion system that will help enhance efficiency over the current-generation engine.

“The small-block architecture has continued to prove its relevance in a fast-evolving industry and the fifth-generation engine will build on the performance legacy with a significant advance in efficiency,” said Winegarden.

GM is investing more than $1 billion in manufacturing facilities associated with producing new small-block engines, resulting in 1,711 jobs that have been created or retained. The Gen V engine is expected in the near future and is guaranteed to have 4.4-inch bore centers – the center-to-center distance between cylinders that has been part of the small-block’s architecture from the beginning.

In the beginning

GM didn’t invent the V-8 engine, but interpreted it in a way that made performance accessible to millions of new customers. It got its start in the years following World War II, after Chief Engineer Ed Cole transferred to Chevrolet from Cadillac, where he oversaw the development of its premium V-8 engine.

Cole’s team retained the basic overhead valve design that was a staple of Chevrolet’s inline-six engine – affectionately called the Stovebolt. It was seen as one of the Chevrolet car line’s selling points, reinforcing a message of simplicity and reliability. Cole challenged his engineers to tighten the new engine package to make it more compact, less costly and easier to manufacture.

Upon its debut in the 1955 Chevy lineup, the new V-8 engine was physically smaller, 50 pounds lighter and more powerful than the Stovebolt six. It was not only a better engine for Chevrolet cars, it represented a better way of building engines, with a minimalist design that took advantage of streamlined production techniques.

After only two years on the market, the small-block began a steady march upward in displacement, power and technological advancement. In 1957, a version equipped with mechanical fuel injection was introduced, dubbed Ramjet. The only other high-volume manufacturer to offer fuel injection at the time was Mercedes-Benz.

Mechanical fuel injection was discontinued in the mid-Sixties, but the small-block debuted electronically controlled fuel injection in the 1980s and established a benchmark with the 1985 launch of Tuned Port Injection. This electronically controlled port fuel injection system was advanced in its day and its basic design is still used on most passenger cars and light-duty trucks more than 25 years later.

The small-block’s 4.4-inch bore centers – the distance from the center of one cylinder to the next – would come to symbolize the compact, balanced performance of the small-block. It was the dimension around which the Gen III small-block was designed in 1997. In 2011, the small-block is in its fourth generation, powering Chevrolet’s full-size trucks, SUVs and vans, midsize trucks and the Camaro and Corvette performance cars.

The first 4.3L (265 cu. in.) engine in 1955 produced up to 195 hp with an optional four-barrel carburetor. Today, the LS9 6.2L (376 cu. in.) supercharged small-block in the Corvette ZR1 is rated at 638 hp (476 kW), making it the most powerful engine ever installed in a regular-production Chevrolet or GM vehicle.

Will debut in GRAND-AM Road Racing Series Rolex 24 in January

DAYTONA, Fla. – Chevrolet unveiled its 2012 Corvette Daytona Prototype at Daytona International Speedway today. The Corvette Daytona Prototype will make its competitive debut in the 50th anniversary of the GRAND-AM Road Racing Series Rolex 24 at Daytona from January 26-29, 2012.

"Racing and performance are the founding principles of Chevrolet, and bringing the Corvette Daytona Prototype to GRAND-AM is a tremendous opportunity," said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet vice president, Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. "The opportunity for innovation is what makes the Daytona Prototype Class such a good fit for Chevrolet.

"Sports car and endurance racing is an outstanding platform for manufacturers like us to test and learn. The design of this race car incorporates iconic Corvette styling cues and will be immediately recognized by sports car enthusiasts and fans of GRAND-AM Road Racing," Campbell said. The new Corvette Daytona Prototype will participate in a GRAND-AM test at Daytona International Speedway on Wednesday, Nov. 16.

"GRAND-AM's new Daytona Prototype concept is aimed at allowing manufacturers to showcase their brand in an exciting, cutting-edge fashion," said GRAND-AM President Tom Bledsoe. "Chevrolet, with its new Corvette DP, has done just that. The anticipation of seeing this new Daytona Prototype compete is building each and every day. This announcement has immediate and far-reaching implications with the potential to change the face of sports car racing."

Four teams will campaign the Corvette Daytona Prototype in 2012: No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Racing; No. 10 SunTrust Racing; No. 99 GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing, and the Nos. 5 and 9 Action Express Racing teams.

"The 2012 Corvette Daytona Prototype was developed by a multi-faceted effort involving Chevrolet, Corvette Designers, Pratt & Miller and GRAND-AM. Chevrolet also worked closely with chassis builders Riley, Coyote and Dallara," said Mark Kent, GM Racing director. "The IMSA GTP Corvette Prototype campaigned by Hendrick Motorsports in the '80s was the inspiration for this new Chevrolet Corvette Daytona Prototype. And, like the GTP Corvettes, the new Corvette Daytona Prototype contains numerous styling cues from the street version of the Chevrolet Corvette."

Corvette has a storied history of racing-related feats in Daytona. Zora Arkus-Duntov – the father of the Corvette and chief engineer working on the Corvette in the '50s and '60s – set a flying-mile speed record of more than 150 miles per hour in a Corvette on Daytona Beach, one of a number of record runs on the beach for him. When Daytona International Speedway opened in 1959, Arkus-Duntov turned the fastest laps – 155 miles per hour – in a Corvette SS.

More recently, in 2001, a Corvette driven by Ron Fellows, Johnny O'Connell, Chris Kneifel and Franck Freon was the overall winner in the Daytona 24-hour. Another Corvette finished fourth that year, with Dale Earnhardt Sr., Dale Earnhardt Jr., Andy Pilgrim and Kelly Collins.

This year's Corvette Brochure is different from anything we've seen recently from the Corvette team in Detroit. This year's brochure tells a story and is narrated by members for the Corvette Production Team as well as member of the Corvette Racing Team and does a nice job tying the production Corvette to the Corvette Racing program under the theme of "Science Creates Art".

Corvette Production Manager Harlan Charles, Corvette Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter and Corvette Design Manager Kirk Bennion are joined by Corvette Racing Program Manager Doug Fehan and Corvette Race Team Driver Tommy Milner to discuss their unique perspectives on how the current production model of Corvette shares its performance and design directly with the Le Mans winning race car, the Corvette C6.R.

The pages of the 2012 Corvette Brochure harken back to the days when bands would tell stories, put pictures or include lyrics on the inside dust covers of their LP albums and the reading is just as interesting for the Corvette junkie.

In addition to the new, town hall meeting format, you'll find plenty of photos and technical data that we've come to expect from Chevrolet's brochures.

It's a great theme for a brochure and for a car. Science creates art. Chevy runs deep.

Could this be the 2014 C7 Corvette?

According to our friends at Jalopnik.co m there is no doubt that it is! For everyone else, the jury is still out.

Over the weekend, Jalopnik claimed that they actually saw the next-generation Corvette completely uncovered and vowed to share it with their readers at noon today (11/14/11),

Readers on the site today were greeted by two drawings of a prototype Corvette along with a story. They claim, "These renderings were derived from hours this weekend I (and our designer) spent in secret, poring over the completely uncamouflaged "sheetmetal" of two versions of the next-gen Corvette. With limited time, we decided to, rather than show you the first one, a base level Corvette, we focused our rendering efforts instead on the high-performance ZR1 trim level."

The use of computer renditions instead of actual photographs have left many people very skeptical of the accuracy of the design and the posts on their site as well as many others reflect that sentiment.

When asked about other C7 renditions "leaked" in magazines or on websites in the past, GM employees have simply said things like, "If it didn't come from GM, don't believe it" and "It's their jobs to sell magazines or increase page views for their sites".

This time is not different. On the official Corvette Facebook page GM posted, "Today Jalopnik posted renderings of what they think the next-gen Corvette will look like. We appreciate their enthusiasm but you'll have to wait a little longer to see what the next Corvette will actually look like."

Everyone has an opinion about the accuracy of the design and of the design itself. While we have no idea of the accuracy, we'd love to hear what you think of the design. Keep in mind that in one of our earlier blog posts, Bob Lutz talked about the C7 needing to be much bolder and must appeal to a younger crowd.

Corvette name Consumer Digest Best for seventh year in a row!

It was a good year for Detroit this year with the Big Three taking over half of the spots in Consumer Digest's "2012 Automotive Best Buys."

The magazine selected 42 vehicles from 244 models for it's Best Buy list. General Motors and Ford Motor Company received 10 acknowledgements while Chrysler got 7.

Of the 10 nods given to General Motors, Chevrolet took six of them including 2 of the 4 spots in the "Sporty Cars" division with the Corvette being joined this year by the Camaro as Consumer Digest Best Buys in that division.

This is the Corvette's 7th year in a row being named to this list which helped Chevy have more awards this year then Toyota or Honda!

In a continuation of the Chevrolet Centennial Celebration, Chevy offer's to take you on the Ride of Your Life!

To use this new application you will again have to be a member Facebook (like with the Best Chevy Ever contest) so that Chevy can again flex in social media muscle that it has been perfecting on sites like Twitter, YouTube and Facebook.

This new application will ask you a few questions give you a few choices and then use you answers plus info it finds on your Facebook page to take you a virtual cruise in your choice of cars through your life!

I'm not positive of the criteria it uses but being that I was born in 1969 and my Facebook page is filled with Corvette information, it's no surprise that the first choice of cars I was given was a 1969 Sting Ray Coupe in Fathom Green. Once I hit the radio for a little Radar Love I was on the way visiting pictures of my home down as a kid and the town where we spent most of our summers mixed in with pictures of my friends and families all blended with some great road scenes from the Corvette's window.

This is a neat little video that you then have the option of sharing with others.

New Rebate for Corvette Buyers who currently lease a non-GM vehicle.

Most of you are aware that if you are on the GM Manifest list for the TIMR or TIMC you get a $3,000 rebate on a new Corvette on top of what ever deal you make with your dealer.

Most of you are also aware that if you currently own a Corvette and have it registered, you may qualify for that $3,000 even if you are not on the manifest list.

However, I have spoken to many of you who are not on the list and currently don't have a Vette (which is why they're calling me) and are upset that they don't get the $3,000 rebate.

Now, GM is offering another conquest rebate!

If you currently are in a lease of a 1999 or newer non-GM vehicle, Chevy will give you a $2,000 rebate when you purchase a new Corvette! You do not have to trade the lease car in to get the rebate!

This program can not be combined with the $3,000 TIMR or TIMC rebate, its one or the other.

To qualify, you must give us a copy of a current lease coupon/statement as well as a copy of the current registration of the vehicle. This can be transferred to anyone in the same household with proof of residence!

New ZR1 Spoiler to be factory installed option on all Corvettes!

The myriad of Corvette spoilers can be a bit confusing. Since 2005 the regular body Corvette Coupe and Corvette Convertible comes with a small, black 3rd brake light spoiler.

When the Z06 came out in 2006, the black 3rd brake light spoiler was still used but was raised higher to help provide some downward thrust to help keep the rear wheels on the ground.

When the Corvette ZR1 came out in 2009, it came with a color-matched full with spoiler that was higher on the outside edges and was a little lower in the middle and curved a little on the ends.

The 2010 Grand Sport Coupe and Convertible came with the black Z06 3rd brake light spoiler which matched many of the other styling cues that came across from the Z06.

Then there were the accessories spoilers. Both 3rd brake light spoilers were available as a color matched option through your dealer's parts department and installed at the dealer. There was also the full with spoiler available at and installed by the dealer that replaced the brake light and was body matched - but no every color was available.

In 2012, the full width spoiler came with the Z06's Z07 Package and the ZR1's PDE package but only in black and not body color matched (maybe to match the black wheels).

And finally, the 2012 Centennial Edition Corvette came with the body matched ZR1 spoiler as part of the package...unless you have the Z06 with Z07 or the ZR1 with PDE, then you're back to the black full width spoiler.

Now, halfway through the 2012 Model Year, Chevrolet will now be offering the body color matching ZR1 spoiler as a factory installed option! The option code will be T43 and the price is believed to be around $350.

This is a deal when you consider that current full width spoiler is a $410 option and is installed at the dealer where the new T43 is put on at the factory.

The new T43 spoiler will be available on Corvette Coupes, Corvette Convertibles, Corvette Grand Sport Coupes, Corvette Grand Sport Convertibles and Corvette Z06s (without the Z07 package) and will be available in all 9 colors (I know, there's 10 colors but Carbon Flash cars are Centennial Editions that already come with the spoiler).

Kerbeck currently has 1 of each of the 9 colors on order and they are scheduled to be built in early to mid December. It should be a free-flow option to be available for orders sometime in late November or early December.

The Return of Cyber Gray and Crystal Red!

The 2011 Corvette Model Year stated with 10 color choices and ended with only 6! Jetstream Blue and Black were both scheduled for early build outs since they were going to be replaced in the 2012 Corvette Model Year with Carlisle Blue and Carbon Flash (Centennial Edition) respectfully.

The problem came after the April 7, 2011 earthquake and tsunami in the industrial region of eastern Japan which destroyed a plant which produced the paint pigment called Xirallic and the world’s major source of the shiny substance comes from a plant in Onahama, Japan. That pigment was used in both Crystal Red and Cyber Gray Corvette colors and both colors were sidelined shortly after the Japanese Disaster.

The 2012 Corvette model officially started with 8 colors to choose from. Neither Crystal Red nor Cyber Gray appeared in the order guide. When you add the fact that the 2 new colors had slow ramp ups the 2012 Corvette color pal ette was really limited to the same 6 colors that the 2011 run ended in.

Well, the two new colors were in full production by late August and now we're happy to say that both Crystal Red and Cyber Gray are up and running in production and both in stock at Kerbeck Corvette of Atlantic City.

Corvette Incentives Extended!

It appears that the Chevy has been happy with the results of their Corvette incentive programs and has extended them for another 2 months!

To review, the 2011 Corvettes have 0% up to 60 months and 2.9% for 72 months! Added this month is the fact that the rate comes with 120 deferred payments with approved credit. For those who don't want to use the special rates, there is $3,000 Consumer Cash (rebate) available but they can not be combined. You have take either the rebate or the special finance rate.

Again, there will be an targeted campaign which will give you another $3,000 rebate if you are on the list. However if you are currently a Corvette owner, you will automatically get this $3,000 even if you are not on the list! And, even better, this $3,000 is compatible with either the $3,000 Consumer Cash or the 0% APR!

If a new 2012 is what you're looking for, both the $1,500 Dealer Cash as well as the 3.9% APR up to 60 moths (with the same 120 deferral) was carried over AND the 2012 Corvettes get the additional $3,000 rebate if you are a current Corvette owner!

These programs will run till 01/03/12.

Bob Lutz: C7 Corvette is a “Much Bolder and More Dramatic Design”

Over the past weekend, an interesting article about the C6 Corvette and the coming C7 redesign hit Bloomberg’s news wire and was later picked up by our friends over at the CorvetteBlogger. The article included some very telling quotes from GM insiders both named and unnamed. Former VP of Product Development Bob Lutz, who helped usher the Corvette ZR1 from pipe dream to Nurburgring terror is back in company’s fold as a consultant and we get to hear his thoughts on the coming next-generation of the iconic Chevrolet Corvette.

The Bloomberg article sets up the notion that the C6 Corvette is in a sales funk that started with the global automotive recession in 2008. The premise the article makes is that the market for $50,000-$100,000 sport cars will return but not to Corvette as long as the car appeals only to the baby boomer demographic of buyers who are 50 years or older. For the C7 Corvette to break out and sell to a younger generation, GM needs to refashion the Corvette to make it more appealable to younger buyers.

Bob Lutz served GM from 2001-2010 as the Vice Chairman of Product Development and is a true blue car guy who believes in giving customers what they want. In discussing the C7 Corvette redesign, Lutz says that he rejected plans for an earlier introduction that included low-cost proposals for only modest changes and that he preferred to wait unto GM had the cash to build a car that would make a Corvette owner want to trade up.

When asked about the C7 Corvette under development, Lutz says that “it’s a much bolder and more dramatic design”. He adds “The new car will also surpass the fuel economy and performance of today’s car in all respects.”

Unnamed sources also told Bloomberg that the there are hints of Ferrari styling in the next Corvette and that it will depart from the traditional looks of the last two generations. That’s an interesting quote as it backs up what Popular Mechanics heard at the Woodward Dream Cruise.

Internal studies by GM show that buyers under 40 years old don’t aspire to drive the Corvette like the older baby boomer demographic who view the Corvette as a reward after their children have grown. To help them understand the motivations of younger sports car buyers, Chevrolet marketers have been talking to owners in Porsche clubs about their views on the Corvette.

Ed Welburn: Don’t Screw Up the Corvette’s Redesign

General Motor’s Vice President of Global Design Ed Welburn recently spoke with Automotive News while he was in Frankfurt and the subject of the Corvette’s redesign came up. Specifically, Welburn talked about the difficulty in designing a new Corvette, which has 58 years of history and a very loyal fan base.

“Everyone wants to design a Corvette, but it is hard work,” Welburn said. “Finding that right balance” is a challenge, he added. “You want it to be a new design, but it needs to be recognizable as a Corvette.”

Welburn spoke with Automotive News while in Frankfurt for the 64th Annual IAA, better known as the Frankfurt Motor Show.

GM’s design chief said that the new Corvette must have a wider appeal while noting today’s Corvette was “nice” but “sales are very weak.” The redesigned Corvette will make “a bit of a shift to appeal to younger customers.” Welburn didn’t comment on what that appeal needed to be.

The next generation Corvette is expected to be ready in 2013 as a 2014 model year. As that date looms, there is an overriding thought in the back of Welburn’s mind:

“You don’t want to be the guy who screwed it up.”
