PROTON design clay model at Proton Power of 1

PROTON design had a few demonstrations at the Proton Power of 1 event, ranging from sketches to producing clay models, all right in front of you, their live audience at the Proton Power of 1 event which concluded today.

This is a mystery finished product, which is just a design concept, but I must say it’s not bad on the eyes. Could some design cues from this clay model be present in future Proton models? What do you think of this design? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

Perodua Alza M2 Edition: Limited edition with new colour

Perodua has released the Alza M2 Edition, which will be limited to 500 units. It will be open for booking at all Perodua sales outlets beginning 1st April with an on the road price of RM69,990, the same price as the Alza Advanced Version, which it’s based on.

First unveiled by former Tun Mahathir Mohamad in January when he visited Perodua’s Rawang facility, the M2 Edition is named after the code name “M2” given to the second national car project, which was later renamed Perodua. For every unit of the M2 sold, Perodua will be donating RM1,000 to the ex-PM’s Perdana Leadership Foundation.

Unique features include an “M2” grade mark and a special “Midnight Blue” colour. Other features include custom leather seat covers and custom carpet mats. Besides those already mentioned, the M2 Edition will have all the equipment that’s standard on the Advanced Version, including the 5-inch touchscreen LCD entertainment system with GPS and bodykit.

PROTON JEBAT?

A favourite modification theme for Mitsubishi Lancer owners is to ape the legendary Evolution, and we’re sure that some Proton Inspira owners or prospects are looking at the same direction too. But before anyone has attempted that on their new car, Proton Design themselves have come up with an “Inspira Evo” to provide some inspiration. As part of the carmaker’s “Pahlawan” series of concepts at KLIMS, this is the Jebat!

The Jebat has a matt black coat covering large parts of its front and rear, with a matching strip at the lower section of the doors. Look closely and you’ll also notice that the front and rear fenders are puffed up, wide-body style. There are also daytime LEDs, bonnet vents (three in total) and a rear spoiler for the Evo look. The rear bumper has a diffuser that’s quite narrow, covering only the length of the number plate. The wheels are 18-inch items.

Inside, Hang Jebat gets to sit on nice Recaros with red stitching, a theme repeated on the door panels. That and a Clarion touch screen ICE system are the only changes from the standard car.

Under those bonnet vents lie a 2.0L MIVEC turbo engine with 237 hp and 343 Nm, good enough for a 0-100 km/h dash in 5.6 seconds. Top speed is 232 km/h

Proton Inspira

The Proton Inspira^[1], or previously referred to as Proton New Sedan^[2], or codenamed P3-90A^[3] is an automobile produced byProton as the successor to the Proton Waja. The Compact car is essentially a rebadged 9th generation (and current) Mitsubishi Lancer.

To be able to do so, Proton renewed a technological transfer agreement with Mitsubishi Motors^[4], an agreement that in the mid-1980s was fundamental to Proton's origins. Proton's inagural model in September 1985, the Proton Saga, was based largely on the 4th generation, and then-current, Mitsubishi Lancer.

Three variants of the Inspira will be produced at Proton's Shah Alam plant: 1.8-litre Manual, 1.8-litre CVT Automatic and 2.0-litre CVT Automatic, with a price range of RM78,999, RM 84,999 and RM 91,999 respectively. ^[5]

Proton’s Range Extender Electric Exora Prototype

Here’s something unexpected. We’ve not only got up close and personal with Proton’s prototype Exora EV, we’ve driven it already! And this wasn’t at a Proton event, but at the iGREET (Information on Green Technology) seminar series on green technology organised by Cyberview Sdn Bhd, the landowner of Cyberjaya. Proton was invited to this sixth and last iGREET session to talk about its foray into the electric vehicle scene.

As most know by now, Proton will roll out green cars in the near future that are often dubbed as “hybrid cars” by the media. In actual fact, the cars coming our way aren’t hybrids in the mould of the Prius or Civic Hybrid, but electric cars powered solely by batteries.

Proton’s Green Project Team is working with UK-based Fraser-Nash Research, Lotus, Imperial College London and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) on a Range Extender Electric Vehicle or REEV – Proton is currently testing the REEV Exora with and without the range extender function, because it’s just a matter of switching the engine on or off.

Some of you might wonder what a range extender is? One of the main drawbacks of an EV is the limited range, and the RE engine takes care of this by providing the battery with juice when it runs dry. So you can reach your destination safely before plugging the car in. The Chevrolet Volt also uses such a system, where its ICE engine doesn’t power the wheels. The experimental RE in the Exora EV prototype is a 400 cc rotary engine with 50 hp. The mass production model most probably won’t come with a rotary, but the target is minimum 50 hp.

There are two electric motors powering this Exora – one for each front wheel. Each makes 35 kW to make 70 kW in total, while torque is rated at 220 Nm combined, available from rest. Proton has decided on the use of lithium polymer batteries, which is more advanced than the lithium ion variety, which is already better than the NiMH packs used in today’s hybrids. Targeted charging time from 10% to full is 6-8 hours while fast charging takes 30 minutes. Proton is aiming for 140 km/h top speed and 140 km range on the Saga body, so we’ll presume that the figures will be slightly less for the Exora.

A charging infrastructure is obviously needed, but at least EV drivers won’t be stranded due to the range extender engine. The REEV Exora is heading to production as early as next year, although nothing is confirmed at this point, which is why we don’t have a detailed technical analysis.

What we have however, is driving impressions of the REEV Exora. We drove the exact same car that won the “Best Range Extender EV” award at the Royal Automobile Club (RAC) Future Car Challenge in England earlier this month. Read it and view the pics after the jump!

Proton Saga facelift unveiled at Thai Motor Expo 2010

We’re here at the Thai Motor Expo 2010 for some pre-KLIMS motorshow action, where Proton has unveiled the 2011 Proton Saga facelift! Here’s an initial list of changes from what we’re able to tell so far:

The entire front end has pretty much changed from the head lamps, grille, bumper, and even the engine hood sheet metal design. The new engine hood now creases in a way that makes the left and right sides of the hood higher. There’s also a very faint spine in the middle of the hood, where in the pre-facelift Saga it was flat.

The headlamps now appear to use three bulbs instead of the previous two bulb config – we think this means there’s a dedicated bulb for high beam now. The signal lamps have been moved towards the inside of the lamps.

The wing mirrors now have turn signal indicators.

The rear end also has significant changes. The tail lamps are new and have LED lighting. There’s a small spoiler on the boot lid, and because of the spoiler design the Saga badge has to be relocated slightly to the left.

The bumper now has a black insert for the diffuser-like design feature, and it’s now wider with reflector lenses and shaped to show off the exhaust muffler and tail pipe, as opposed to the pre-FL Saga which had its rear end designed to hide the exhaust tail pipe.

The 1-DIN Clarion radio looks the same to us (except for the MP3/WMA logos which indicate support for those files), but there are new USB and AUX-in ports which are not integrated into the radio but are instead positioned to the lower right of the radio. This takes up some of the cubby hole space below the radio.

The steering wheel now has audio control buttons, similiar in style to the Satria Neo’s.

The fabric pattern on the door cards and the seats are now of a different design (old one is on the left). The baseline model in Thailand has a yet another different fabric pattern, and the one we are showing above in comparison to the old fabric is the high spec fabric pattern.

There are now rear power window button controls. As for which of the Malaysian car specs will feature rear power windows and which won’t, we’ll have to wait for the Malaysian launch.

There’s a new alloy wheel design, but the tyre size is the same as before – 185/60R14.

There’s now the option for a front passenger airbag which takes up the ’tissue box’ holder compartment in the pre-facelift Saga.

These are the only changes we are able to see so far, and we have to note that some of these updates like the USB/AUX function, the extra airbag and the rear power windows could only be for the higher spec models. Four colours are available in Thailand – Solid White, Tranquility Black, Genetic Silver and the new colour you see here which is Blue Rock.

There could be other changes on the mechanical side of things though, which we will probably only be able to find out when we speak to Proton’s engineers in Malaysia. The Thai spec sheet (which you will be able to see after the jump) quotes 70kW and 120Nm, which is the same as the pre-facelift Saga.

Daihatsu Begins Sales of the New Compact Car ALZA in Malaysia

OSAKA, JAPAN – November 24, 2009: Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd. (Daihatsu) announced today that it has, together with Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) its Malaysian automobile production and sales joint venture company located in Selangor, Malaysia, begun sales of a new compact car, the ALZA. An event to mark the launch of the ALZA was held in Kuala Lumpur in the evening of November 23.

The ALZA, based on the compact passenger vehicle Boon Luminas in Japan, was developed under an R&D project led by Perodua to meet the diversifying needs and higher demand for compact cars in the Malaysian market, targeting the MPV and 3-box segments that are not fully covered by the Myvi and Viva alone. The monthly sales target is 3,500 units and the manufacturer's suggested retail prices range between RM56,000 and RM64,000 (approximately 1.45 to 1.66 million yen).

Origin of the ALZA name

The "ALZA" vehicle name is based on the Spanish word "alzar," which means to raise, boost, or lift, thus designating a vehicle that "enhances your lifestyle."

Perodua is Malaysia's second national auto manufacturer and has expanded its product lineup, with a focus on compact cars. With the cooperation of the Malaysian government, Perodua has worked to raise its cost competitiveness and enhance quality, as well as that of its suppliers, and has expanded its business also through production of the Avanza under contract from Toyota and exported the Myvi to Indonesia.

The highest specification level of the Perodua Alza is actually a model called the Perodua Alza Advanced Version, which is basically based on the Alza 1.5 Automatic Premium and Manual Premium but with a few additional specifications. You can book this now but delivery will only start in March 2010.

You basically get a new bodykit which consists of front, rear and side skirts and a different rear spoiler. On the inside, you get leather seat covers for all the seats, but the leather treatment does not continue onto the door trim. Also provided is a 5 inch touchscreen LCD which has a Windows CE-based GPS navigation system with a SiRF Atlas IV chipset and 500MHz CPU. The LCD also displays a feed from a 150 degree lense reverse camera.

Finally, there is tinted film for all the glass in the Alza which Perodua claims is GPS and SmartTAG friendly. Perodua states the specifications as following: 95% IR rejection, 99% UV rejection, 70% light for the front windscreen and about over 50% light for the rest of the glass. This tint has a 5 year warranty against peeling, oxidisation, cracking, discoloration and fading. I assume that as an OEM option this tint is also JPJ-approved.

The Alza Advanced Version manual goes for RM66,490 for solid and RM66,990 for metallic, while the Alza Advanced Version automatic goes for RM69,490 for solid and RM69,990 for metallic. The S. Metallic option is missing because the Alza Advanced Version only comes in three colours – Ivory White, Ebony Black and Classy Purple, while the only special metallic colour is Pearl White.

I reckon you could probably get a good Garmin nuvi for under RM1,000 and add on a very good set of tint for about RM2,000 to RM3,000 or so maximum. If you don’t want the leather seat covers and bodykit you’re better off adding your own tint and GPS. Not sure about the cost of the reverse camera though.

HOT: Proton MPV 100% fully uncovered!

Fully undisguised shots of the Proton MPV – both exterior and interior – have found their way onto the internet, and they reveal to us plenty of details on the eagerly anticipated 7-seater MPV by Proton!

What we can see is one shot of the Proton MPV in white, another in an unidentified brown-like colour (may be something else altogether because of colour balance), and 3 shots of the interior. Here are what can be observed:

A complete revamp of the Proton steering wheel design that is curiously reminiscent of the one Honda is currently using. There is steering wheel audio controls and also a phone button which could indicate some variants of the MPV are equipped with a Bluetooth hands-free system.
Instrument panel features a two-meter design, with RPM on the left and an even-numbered speedometer on the right which tops out at 180km/h. The design of the meters are predominantly red with white text. They look like an evolution of the one in the GEN2 CPS facelift, but with modifications that somehow make them end up looking like the one found in the Isuzu D-Max, except the D-Max design is blue.

Dashboard itself doesn’t seem to have any texture to it but it’s likely that this is a pre-production version, so the production version should have some texture in-line with all the recent Proton model launches.

The MPV looks really gorgeous from the outside especially the white one, with strong design cues from the Mitsubishi Grandis. The interior looks alright, except the air cond vents look really cheap. They’re better off reusing the ones from the Saga. There also seems to be an odd-looking spacing between the two center vents, like there was supposed to be a hazard light button there but somehow went missing.

2nd August 2008, Shah Alam - KDI Team makes a visit to the Proton Technology Week - The Journey Through Technology that full of excitement. We arrived on 3PM at Shah Alam Proton Factory (Kilang Proton Shah Alam) near the Proton Main Showroom and Office. Four of us tried to get the best and exclusive information about Proton and its technologies just for KDI readers.

The first attraction on the visits is about the stage show and competition. There are a lot of competition that you can join and get a chance to win great prizes such as Sony Playstation and Ipod Nano. Editor Azameel tried his luck to win that sony PSP but he is not lucky enough =p.

On that stage is the 3 millionth car produced by proton that is the new saga. Wow! Its already 3 million car produced by proton!

You will have a chance to take a look at how they produce the new saga in the Saga Production Line Factory from building chasis, doors, equipment installation and the dyno test. you will appreciate and proud to be Malaysian if you see how Proton could be National car maker with its technology and applications.

Beside that, you can take a peep of the new Proton MPV in a big box. We already seen the model and its interior inside the box but they didnt allow anybody to take a photo. There is a chasis of the new proton MPV that seems to be same with what already leaked in the TV3’s buletin utama. Near the Proton MPV is the Proton MPV concept car that they called Proton MSX. This car is the greatest design of MPV from proton and it is showed in clay model shape.

In the Research and Development (R&D) Building, you will see how they make a clay model by machine, the material used, Proton MPV, Concept car, Proton Engine Prototype and Satria+Arena mixed shape car while outside of it, you can take a look at the car crash test results for proton cars at about 35 km/hr and beside it is the test track.

Anybody will have a chance to be in the proton waja drift car and feel the excitement on drifting inside it. Beside that, you can experience go-kart neer the R&D building.

The Proton Satria was a hatchback produced by Proton. Production started in 1995 for the first generation and ended in 2005. The new Satria Replacement Model (SRM), known as Proton Satria Neo was launched on 16 June 2006. The name Satria which means knight inSanskrit was chosen for Proton's 3-door hatchback to reflect the sportiness of the car.

The first generation Satria was based a 3-door hatchback on the 1991 Mitsubishi Mirage (Colt outside the Japanese market). Changes were limited to front-end styling and interior from the bigger Wira. Powerplant options included the 4G13p 1.3-litre 12-valve, 4G15p 1.5-litre 12-valve and 4G92p 1.6-litre 16-valve SOHC engine. The 1.5 and 1.6-litre 16v versions were also available with optional 3-speed and 4-speed automatic transmissions respectively.

Trim levels were LSi, GLi, GLSi and SEi. The base-specification LSi had the 1.3-litre 12-valve engine only: GLi versions got the 1.5-litre 12-valve engine in addition to the 1.3-litre: whilst GLSi and SEi versions got the 1.6 16v engine as well as the 1.5 12v.

A later facelift version featured a different tail-end to the original Mirage. These were launched in 1996 in Malaysia and later in other countries, and new XLi, S XLi and GTi trim levels were available. New 1.3 12v, 1.5 12v and 1.6 16v petrol engines were available.

Lotus Engineered Proton Satria GTi.

The Satria Sports GTi was launched with a 141 bhp (105 kW) 1.8-litre Mitsubishi-sourced 4G93p engine, originally found in the Mitsubishi Lancer GTI.

This model was later evolved by Lotus Engineering, the Satria GTi's engine and handling was later tuned and revised, delivering 130 bhp (97 kW) at the wheels. It has a Top speed 220kmph / 136 mph.

During the involvement of Lotus,a new body kit was also adopted for the GTi for better aerodynamics. In the UK this limited edition vehicle wears a Lotus Engineering badge below the Proton Satria GTi badge. Proton claims that the Satria GTi was their fastest car it has ever produced to date.

Satria R3

The Proton Satria R3 is a limited edition Satria sold in Malaysia. The term R3 stands for Race, Rally, Research. R3 is a redefined version of Satria Gti by Proton's Racing development team and also Lotus. It houses the same 1800 cc Mitsubishi 4G93p engine but has undergone some minor adjustments by Lotus handling. Bodyshell has been improved with double stitch welded monocoque chassis with front and rear strut tower brace bars. Top speed 220km/h done and tested thanks to Saritha and Naveen.

The Satria Neo was introduced in June 2006 as a replacement for the first generation Satria. Based on a new platform developed in-house by Proton (with some parts borrowed from the bigger Gen-2 and Waja), the car is currently only available in a three-door hatchback guise. The car was developed at a cost of RM500 million and four years, and was expected by Proton to generate a monthly sales volume of 2,000 to 2,500 units. The car was also intended to target those who are "youthful and sporty". The Satria Neo was launched by Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

The entry-level Satria Neo, the 1.3 L-line, is powered by a 1.3 litre, inline-4 twin-camCampro engine, producing 94 bhp (70 kW) at 6000 rpm and 120 N m of torque at 4000 rpm. The 1.6 M-line and top-of-the-range H-line models have 1.6 litre versions of the same engine, with an output of 110 hp (82 kW) at 6000 rpm and 148 N m of torque at 4000 rpm. Both the M-line and H-line models have active system antennae which actively search for signals in areas with poor reception. All cars have the option of either 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic gearboxes supplied by Mitsubishi that are carried over from the previous Satria, with the H-line benefitting from safety features such as twin airbags, ABS with EBD and seatbelt pre-tensioners. All versions of the car come with an integrated Blaupunkt CD player.

Criticisms of the car include the lack of headroom and legroom for rear passengers (even compared to the previous generation Satria), and lacklustre performance in comparison with the Satria GTi. The infamous torque dip of Proton's Campro engine is also present.^[1]

A Satria Neo is used as the Star in a Bog Standard Car in Top Gear Australia.

MEM Proton Satria Neo Super 2000 Rally Car

Mellors Elliot Motorsport has prepared an FIA Super 2000 compliant Proton Satria Neo based on the road car's chassis. It is powered by same engine as found in the Proton Waja 1.8.^[2]Proton and Norwegian driver Petter Solberg are rumoured to enter the World Rally Championship in 2010 with a Super 2000+ version of the Satria Neo.

Proton Satria Neo CPS

During February 2009, Proton launched a CPS version of Satria Neo, replacing the top-end H-Line version of the Satria Neo. It comes with an aggressively styled body kit and spoiler that pays homage to the Satria GTi. It is powered by a 1.6 litre Campro CPS engine with 125 bhp and 150 Nm of torque which reportedly does not suffer from the torque dip of older Campro engines; however, the timing of the cam profile switching mechanism is slightly modified for aggressive driving - the CPS mechanism in the Satria Neo CPS changes from low cam to high cam at 4,400 rpm rather than at 3,800 rpm as in the other CPS-equipped models such as the Proton Waja and Proton Gen-2, as well as the Proton Exora.

Proton Putra

The Proton Putra was a coupé automobile produced by Malaysian automobile company Proton. Production of the Putra started in 1995 for the first model and ended in 2000, but was briefly relaunched in limited numbers in 2004–05 available just in Malaysia. The reasoning for the relaunch is to clear of the remaining stocks available at Proton Plant.

Based on Mitsubishi's Mirage Asti, the Putra is a two-door coupé with front end styling similar to that of both the Proton Wira and the first generation Proton Satria. The rear however features a more original design with only the taillights bearing similarities to those of the first generation Satria.

The Putra's interior standard equipment included Recaro N-Joy seats, leather Momo Daytona 4 steering and leather Momo gearknob. But during the relaunching units of Putras in Malaysia, interior Recaros, Momo steering and gearknob was not included as standards instead it was refitted with normal seats and steerings but comes with black interior.

Perodua Viva Elite: a new look for the Viva

Perodua launched the new Perodua ViVA Elite today, aimed at offering the market a variant with a more stylish image compared to the original ViVA. It is an aesthetic modification in the style of the Myvi SE, and at the same time they’ve revamped the model line-up a little.

The ViVA was first introduced with 660cc, 850cc, 1,000cc and 1,000cc premium variants. Now it has restructured the model lineup, offering the 660 BX MT, 660 EX MT, 850 MT, 1.0 AT, 1.0 ELITE MT, 1.0 ELITE AT, and the 1.0 ELITE EZi. That’s three different variants for the new ViVA ELITE.

Externally, the ViVA Elite has its own front bumper with integrated foglamps, front grille and its own engine hood design. On the side you’ll see chrome door handles, side skirts, and 14 inch 12-spoke alloy wheels. On the back you’ll see a new rear bumper with a honeycomb grille design, and the 1.0 ELITE EZi model (note, this is different from the ELITE AT) gets an additional rear spoiler. The windows of the ViVA Elite also feature a UV protection coating that is said to reject 91% of UV rays.

On the inside you get a new 1-DIN head unit with MP3 and WMA support, an underside tray under the passenger seat, seat backpockets, a new seat fabric design, and fabric trim on the door panels. All ViVA ELITE models will get seat height adjusters for the driver’s seat, and electrically adjustable side mirrors. On the ELITE EZi, these side mirrors are also electrically retractable and have integrated turn signals.

Only the ViVA 1.0 ELITE EZi gets a full load of safety features including dual SRS airbags for the front, ABS brakes, EBD and Brake Assist. Power steering is also only available on the ELITE models. The other non-Elite models are left with just basic features such as reverse sensors on the 850 and 1.0 model, and a CD player on the 660 EX, 850 and 1.0 model. The Perodua Viva is a city car manufactured by Malaysian automaker Perodua since May 10, 2007. It was originally planned to be the replacement of Perodua's current city cars - the Perodua Kancil and the Perodua Kelisa. Once launched, Perodua decided to market it as a Kelisa replacement only, and will continue to sell the Kancil. The Perodua Viva is based on the 7th generation Daihatsu Mira. All of the Perodua Viva models uses Daihatsu DVVT engines. Only the Premium version comes with dual airbag and ABS.

Specifications

The Perodua Viva was initially launched with 6 models. They are 660EX manual, 850EX manual, 1.0SX Standard manual, 1.0SXi Premium manual, 1.0EZ Standard automatic and the 1.0EZi Premium automatic. The range was later updated on the 23rd of July 2009 with the Viva Elite manual, Viva Elite automatic and the Viva Elite EZi.^[1]

The suspension is typical of small hatchbacks with MacPherson struts in front located by an L-shaped lower arm. At the rear, Viva is fitted with a torsion beam axle and trailing arms. The suspension geometry has been optimised for better steering response and ride comfort. The 1000 cc models have power-assisted steering, optional auto transmission and also a front stabilizer. The 660 cc and 850 cc are barebones basic models, devoid of power steering and auto transmission. As the Viva is based on Daihatsu Mira, a kei car, it has a compact exterior dimensions and a small turning radius. It is roomy for its class, with enough room for 4 adults comfortably.

Viva comes with 3-cylinder engine choices: 660 cc, 850 cc and 1000 cc. They are familiar engines but updated with modern technology such as DVVT (Dynamic Variable Valve Timing) and EFI, and they all have twin overhead camshafts to provide even stronger low-speed pulling power, resulting in fewer gearchanges, yet also manages to increase top end power. Other innovations include a resin port intake manifold and a head cover incorporating an air-cleaner casing.

Fuel economy varies from 15.1 km/l (42.6 mpg (imp)) for the fully loaded 1000 cc auto version to the very thrifty 18.7 km/l (53 mpg) for the basic 660 cc model. For the 1000 cc manual the 0-100 km/h time is about 12.80 seconds. The engine torque band is not peaky and timing it takes to hit 70 km/h (43 mph) is good. It may be pushed to 130 km/h (81 mph) without much effort. However the engine drones at such speeds. Top speed is around 160 km/h (99 mph).

The Myvi boasts either one of two water-cooled, four-stroke engines derived from the first generation Daihatsu Sirion: A 1.0 litre EJ-VE engine with three in-line cylinders, or the Toyota Passo: 1.3 litre K3-VE engine with four in-line cylinders; both engines employ Dynamic Variable Valve Timing (DVVT) systems and conventional electronic fuel injection (EFI).

In addition to raw performance, features previously uncommon on Perodua cars were inherited from the Sirion to the Myvi. Among them are 4-hole injectors, foamed urethane injected to the A-pillar, centre pillar and B-pillar for noised insulation, immobiliser systems andpedestrian injury reduction body construction. Other notable features include underbody air flow regulating items, resin intake manifoldsand cylinder headcovers integrated with air cleaner cases (for 1.0 engines) and flexible flywheels for reduced vibration during running (for manual transmission).

2008 facelift

On August 22, 2008, an updated Perodua Myvi was launched. The new Myvi features a modified front grille, front bumper, front bonnet, rear bumper, alloy rims, dashboard color, instrument panel design, MP3/WMA player and seat fabric. Its 1.3 Premium model additionally features new UV protection glass, a seat height adjuster, as well as a new audio system with USB and Bluetooth capabilities.^[1]

A "Special Edition" of the new Perodua Myvi SE was also launched on October 10, 2008 with a new bumpers, clear taillights, smoked headlights, an amber instrument panel, leather seats, and a 2-DIN Compact Disc player with MP3, WMA, USB and Bluetooth support instead of an integrated unit. It is only available with a 1.3L engine with a manual or automatic transmission.^[2]

Reception

The launch of the Perodua Myvi was significant as it marked first time Perodua competed head-to-head with Proton, the first Malaysian national car maker, which would release a similarly classed Proton Savvy.

The Myvi 1.3 beat its rival, the Proton Savvy 1.2, as the "Car of the Year 2005/2006" by Autocar ASEAN, a magazine for car buyers in Malaysia. The Edge Daily, a local financial news media reported that Myvi sales have far surpassed its initial expectations and has been selling extremely well since its rollout in April.

Proton's Savvy, available to the market a few months after the launch of the Myvi, had not affected Myvi sales. Observing the strong demand for the Myvi, it boosted sales of vehicles in the country and Perodua's market share in 2006.

Review

Richard Hammond, a presenter on BBC's Top Gear, took the Perodua Myvi out for a spin^[3] , and he seems to be impressed:

"No jokes, this is a good-looking car. But if it looks familiar, that's because this is a Daihatsu Sirion in all but name. You see it costs billions to develop a new car - you design them on computers then build lots of them to crash into walls. So Perodua let someone else do it and spent their money sticking a new badge on it.
But they kept a bit back to spend on styling. Which is why, even though it shares bits and pieces with the Sirion, the Myvi is better looking...
...So under seven grand for a good-looking car, built in a factory shared with Toyota, which handles as well as a Yaris, does nearly 50mpg with a three-year warranty - yes please."

Jeremy Clarkson doesn't like it claiming the brakes, the ride, the seats and the interior are "rubbish". He also humorously suggested that "this is a car you drive with a long face".

Export to Indonesia

The Perodua Myvi is exported to Indonesia and badged as the Daihatsu Sirion since April 2007.^[4] The Sirion in Indonesia does not use the global Sirion styling by Daihatsu, but uses Perodua's styling including the interiors, bumpers and lamps. It is only available in 1.3L version with two types of variants. Type-D offers basic spec while Type-M offers Aerokits and leather seats.

Proton Tiara

The Proton Tiara was a Malaysian automobile based on the Citroën AX, built under licence by the automobile manufacturer Protonbetween 1996 and 2000.

The genesis of the Tiara was the result of an agreement during the mid-1990s between Proton's then CEO, Tan Sri Yahaya Ahmad, andPSA Peugeot Citroën, a producer of Citroën and Peugeot vehicles. Yahaya had expressed wishes that Proton not use Mitsubishiplatforms, and that Proton cooperate with PSA Peugeot Citroën for access to its diesel engines.

Yahaya Ahmad was killed in a helicopter crash in 1997, and Proton returned to using various Mitsubishi-based platforms and developed in-house designed models later. Production of the Tiara ceased in 2000 due to low sales volume; in 2005, the Proton Savvy was launched as a successor to the Proton Tiara.

The Tiara was known as the cheapest used car in its market.^{[verification needed]} Its appearance mimicked that of more powerful Citroën AXs, such as the AX GT, but the grille was restyled to match the existing Saga and Wira models. Other cosmetic differences included different bumpers and taillight clusters. It was only available with a 1.1-litre 45 kW (60 hp) engine.

The Proton Tiara was sold only in the Malaysian market, due to similarities with the Citroën Saxo.

Proton Savvy among top 10 cars in Thailand

BANGKOK: Malaysian-made Proton Savvy has been voted among Thailand's top 10 cars in 2008 by The Nationdaily's car writers.

The Savvy, priced at 469,000 baht (RM44,000), was selected along with some of the most impressive and expensive cars in the Thai market, among them the Jaguar XF, BMW 320D, Volvo S80 3.2, Mini Copper S Clubman, Honda City, Honda Jazz, Ford Focus 2.0 TDCI, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and Subaru Impreza STI.

The daily said many would not consider Proton a mainstream brand in Thailand, but with the Savvy, the writers were more than impressed.

"Cheap price, good acceleration and almost go-kart-like handling (thanks to Lotus) made us fall in love with this little Malaysian thing," the daily said of the car, which is distributed by Phranakorn Auto Sales.

The list, which is prepared annually, covers a whole range of criteria, from value for money through to drivability, performance, fuel economy and sheer good looks.

Phranakorn general manager (operations), Apichart Wangsatorntanakhun, said the quality of the car was the main factor for the selection, adding that the listing augured well for Proton brand in the market and its future model launchings in Thailand.

"It's best value for money in the market, with good performance, like handling, plus economical to purchase and operate.

"You can buy a cheap car but if its performance is not good, you cannot sustain in the market," he said, when commenting on Savvy's listing in the top 10.

When Proton made its debut at end-2007 in the Thai market, dominated by the world's top manufacturers like Toyota and Honda for decades, Savvy was the cheapest car priced between 399,000 baht and 460,000 baht.

GEN 2 and Satria were launched at the same time while Persona CNG came to the market last December.

Apichart said in its first year of operation, Proton sold more than 3,000 cars, with Savvy accounting for 54 percent of the total sales.

"During the recent 25th Thailand International Motor Expo, Proton received 863 bookings, with the Persona model, fitted with preinstalled compressed natural gas (CNG), being the top model," he said.

It is important to locate a good generalist mechanic and use that facility as your primary car care shop. As they develop a history with your car, the benefits will become evident. They will be better at diagnosing repairs and preventing potential problems down the road. The complete maintenance history of the vehicle will be at their disposal to better serve you and your car.

They should also have a referral network of specialist mechanics that may be necessary to handle repairs outside of their facility. Transmission experts, engine experts and body experts are only a few of the specialists you may call upon to repair your car and extend its operating life.

If you have a good generalist mechanic, their referrals should be very valuable to you. Chances are that they view you as a good customer and would not want to jeopardize that relationship by recommending a shop that is not qualified to handle a repair. The easiest way out is of course to use other people to fix your car. But what if it stalls in the middle of a desert? Then the service of an auto club (AAA) comes in. If you haven't already, you can register with one and always remember to keep their phone number in your car. If you cannot solve the problem yourself, an auto club suddenly becomes very convenient. If you join a good auto center they will appear promptly with a tow truck if necessary, taking your vehicle to the nearest repair shop for a decent price.

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia will have its own team in Formula One next year.

A Lotus-powered racing team, to be called the 1Malaysia F1 team, will take on giants like Ferrari, McLaren-Mercedes and Renault in the premier motorsports event next year.

The team will join Force India-Mercedes as Asia’s representatives in F1, along with old-timers like Toyota.
The International Automobile Federation (FIA) has accepted Malaysia’s bid to enter the 2010 and future Formula One World Championships, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced yesterday.

The 1Malaysia F1 team will be a partnership between the Govern-ment and the private sector, including investors led by Datuk Kamarudin Meranun (AirAsia Deputy CEO), Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes (AirAsia CEO) and SM Nasaruddin SM Nasimuddin (Naza Group CEO).

The Malaysian-owned team will also mark the return of Proton-owned Lotus, the prestigious constructors who left F1 in 1994.

Najib, who made the announcement at the Ministry of Finance yesterday, said the team would be based at the Sepang International Circuit, making it the first to be located outside Europe.

“This is where the cars will be designed, manufactured and tested. It will be ‘Made-in-Malaysia, by Malaysians’ and of course, the pit-stops will be run by Malay-sians,” he said.

“This is a meaningful development and I hope that it will further raise our country’s profile on the world stage.”
The team will have a Malaysian technical and pit crew, totalling some 200 people, to be managed by former Renault technical director Mike Gascoyne.

Najib added that the team hoped to announce its two drivers by Oct 31.
“Currently, six local and international drivers have been shortlisted for evaluation,” he said.
“Our F1 team will also have technical experts from outside Malaysia to ensure that we are ready to compete on the world’s most prestigious racing stage.”

Malaysia hosted its first F1 race in 1999 at the Sepang F1 Circuit and Alex Yoong was the first Malaysian to race in the championships in 2001 and 2002 for Minardi.

The Prime Minister had earlier launched the exchange programme between employees from the government and government-linked companies (GLCs) as part of the Government-GLCs Cross-Fertilisation Programme.
He handed letters-of-trust to 47 government and GLC staff taking part in the programme.
