Martha Speaks
PBS Kids’ program Martha Speaks offers two ready-made reading programs for grades P-6. The Read-Aloud Book Club includes classroom guides for ten book club sessions as well as support materials. The Martha Speaks websitealso features episodes that coordinate with the sessions. The Reading Buddies Program is a cross-age program designed for kindergarten and upper-elementary students to increase their vocabulary, develop self-esteem and social skills, and enhance their love of books.

Reading Rainbow
Reading Rainbow, the award-winning television series that encourages reading among children, can now be streamed on Discovery Education! Each episode centers on a theme from a book which is explored through a number of segments or stories.

Inspiring Middle School Literacy
This collection of self-paced lessons is designed to enhance the literacy skills of struggling readers in grades 5-8. Each uses videos, interactive activities, note taking, reading, and writing to present students with an engaging science, social studies, mathematics, or language arts topic.

Literacy Central
Literacy Central is designed to provide guidance to educators on the development, implementation, and monitoring of literacy plans. The information is organized by the Essential Elements of Literacy PERKS. The website features planning guidance, videos, professional learning modules with facilitators’ guides, information organized by age/grade spans, and other resources for teachers to use in planning for meeting students’ learning needs.

Into the Book
This multimedia teaching resource is designed to improve reading comprehension and the ability to think and learn across the curriculum. Videos feature students using powerful learning strategies to understand and apply what they learn when they read. The companion website features interactive reading comprehension activities, music, video clips, classroom ideas, posters, teacher guides, and lesson plans.

Alabama Public Television proudly announces the production of a new live, electronic field trip entitled “OUR NATION’S CAPITOL”!  It will be delivered via the Internet on February 13, 2013 from 1:00-2:00 pm EST as a live stream ONLY. This program is FREE to all educators throughout the United States.

Registration is required and completion of registration enables access to the live event and immediate access to a wealth of online classroom resources and teaching tools to enhance the learning process.  As a “bonus,” registrants will be able to access the archived electronic field trip “Exploring Mount Vernon” with new and enhanced educational materials.

 Submit your videos by October 1, and they could be featured on “Student Voices, Election 2012.” This special edition of Education Matters airs on KET October 11 at 8:00/7:00 pm CT, right before live coverage of the vice-presidential debate at Centre College.

“Student Voices” will feature a panel of high school students discussing election-year issues that affect young people. We’re looking for well-produced videos about one to three-minutes in length on topics that address student concerns and opinions related to the election. We hope to use several of these videos in the program.

For example, students might zero in on a single issue, such as college loans or the job market, and share their perspective. The videos could take the form of debates, opinion pieces, video diaries, or ….? Students can use their skill and creativity to make the videos interesting and relevant.
