Join Dave Shuffett and Amy Hess for Kentucky Collectibles! Send us a photo of your treasure and you may receive a free ticket to have it appraised at the Kentucky Collectibles appraisal fair on Saturday, June 22 in the KET studios in Lexington. Email your photo to kycollectibles@ket.org or post it on KET’s Facebook page.

You can watch the entire first season of Kentucky Collectibles online to get a sense of what kind of treasures made it onto the show – and which ones were worth the most!

Highlights from last year’s appraisal fair include:

• One man’s father bought him a 1946 Martin guitar in Lexington in the late 1940s. It has its original case and all of its original parts and was appraised for $8,000.

• One individual brought in what was determined by an appraiser to be some of the rarest marbles in the world. The collection appraised for $20,000-$30,000 on the program.

• Another person brought in a well-preserved Harpers Ferry Model 1805 firearm that has been traced back to the War of 1812 in the Battle of the Thames where Tecumseh was killed. The current owner bought it from the Scott County family who originally owned it. It was appraised for $15,000-$20,000.

Celebrating the way in which a building can positively impact people and communities in Kentucky, individuals are invited to nominate buildings of all sizes and styles. Nominations will be entered into “50 of The Best Kentucky Buildings” public competition. If the structure is located in Jefferson County, the nomination will also be entered into a professionally juried “Ten Buildings That Changed Louisville” competition.

The launch of the contests are in conjunction with AIA Kentucky’s 50th anniversary and the premiere of the PBS program 10 Buildings That Changed America, which airs Sunday, May 12 at 10/9 p.m. on KET2 and Monday, May 13 at 9/8 p.m. on KET.

RULES

People of all ages may submit one or more nominations at ket.org/topbuildings or through the mail on or prior to June 15, 2013. Call (800) 866-3366 to obtain a print nomination form. Return it postmarked by June 15, 2013 to KET Kentucky Architecture, 560 Cooper Drive, Lexington, KY 40502.

After the June 15 voting deadline, all nominees will be compiled by AIA Kentucky and KET. For the “50 of The Best Kentucky Buildings” competition, a selection committee will identify the 50 finalists. Then, those 50 will be showcased on the AIA Kentucky website, where the public can vote on them to determine their order of popularity. Voting will take place in August and September 2013.

All nominations received that are located in Jefferson County will be automatically forwarded to KET for submission to the “Ten Buildings That Changed Louisville” competition. KET will have all submissions peer reviewed by a professional jury.

The winners of both competitions will be announced in November at a special event to which nominees, owners and architects of the nominated buildings and the general public will be invited.

KET public affairs host and managing editor Bill Goodman is one of five individuals inducted today into the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame. The Kentucky Tonight host joins 184 other journalists previously inducted into the Hall of Fame since its inception in 1981.

“For a person who makes his living from speaking, I find myself at a loss for the appropriate words to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation for my induction into the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame,” Bill says. “Without the support and assistance of my family and the many colleagues who encouraged me along the way, I would not be here today. To the KET family and viewers, I say thank you – this honor belongs to you, as well.”

Since 1996, Bill has been the host and managing editor of the Emmy Award-winning public affairs series Kentucky Tonight. Additionally, he serves as host for Education Matters, along with a number of other public affairs specials, including KET’s election night coverage.

Goodman also hosts the compelling conversation series One to One. His guests have included legendary jockey Pat Day; Nikky Finney, poet, professor and recipient of the National Book Award for Poetry; Pulitzer Prize winner George Will; actor Richard Dreyfuss; current and former Kentucky political leaders; and many others. He is also the author of the KET blog “Bill’s Eye” and is active on Twitter at @BillKET.

A native of Glasgow, Ky., Goodman graduated from Western Kentucky University, and he recently earned an MFA in Creative Nonfiction from Spalding University. Prior to coming to KET, Goodman worked at TV stations in Nashville and Houston.
