In this age where anyone can shape the web, we have a shortage of ‘normal people’. Here’s why it matters.

Have you ever seen the words "Subscribe to my RSS" in blogs and such?

You have?

What do you think, hun? Do you really want to subscribe to my RSS? Want to de-neutralize my car’s ABS? Want to hyperbolize the MMS and be my BFF too?

Talk to me, baby.

More often than not, when well informed robot savants who create websites go about, you know, creating websites, they talk like well informed robot savants who, well, create websites. And they want normal people to “get it”.

Sadly, normal people who use their websites don’t get it.

Happily, the best minds in the world see this as an opportunity.

Think: Why do people use one search engine over another? Or use one web application, social network, or email client over another?

Amongst different reasons, “Because it is easy to use” is one big one.

More people are realizing the need to make the web more usable by normal people. Not just in the interface, but in the choice of words. These best minds in the world will help brands communicate in the web, help presidents win elections by organizing the masses, and help any business get the edge in the age of the internet.

So why then are so many websites so difficult to use?

The worldwide shortage of normal people

Yes, my fiends, we have a shortage of normal people. It’s true!

Why? Because they turned into mutant people!

People tend to start off normal. Then, they decided to learn the language of the web, learn marketing, learn programming, and “learn” all this esoteric knowledge which converts them into mutant people.

They forget who they were: Normal people.

Or worse, normal people pay mutant people loads of money to do stuff they don’t understand. I see this all the time. Big brand pays ad agency who pays interactive agency who pays IT mutant graduate to ‘make a website’ and you end up with a 20MB Flash game which requires you to have a degree in aeronautics to meander. “WHOA THIS IS USER ENGAGEMENT HOLLA!” they holler.

Do we holla back, girl?

Don’t. Don’t feed the web with unusable junk. It’s cluttered as it is.

We expect marketers to know this, but they have not forcefully applied their consumer-centric thinking to web environments. This is still evident today, as new web applications, social networks, ‘websites’ and tools flood the market.

Will normal people return to save us from the de-humanization of web communication?

The ‘easy to use’ revolution

More interactive agencies, web designers, and programmers are getting on the human language, user experience design, and usability patterns bandwagon. Programmers, designers, and copywriters are getting in the loop. It’s been a hot trend for a few years now, I know, but it has not hit mainstream.

But it will.

Soon, companies will only want to hire these hybrid-mutant-normal-people, not super-mutants. Businesses which use hybrid-mutant-normal-workforce will get more customers consuming their stuff because it is ‘the most easy to use’.

What can normal people and mutants do about it?

Become a usability expert on top of your current profession. Whether you’re a marketer, copywriter, programmer, or designer, learn it, and shout about it for instant career-differentiation. It isn’t hard to learn, just go on Delicious or Diigo or Google and look for ‘usability’ and ‘ux’.

Use “Hallway Usability Testing”: Not just for websites, but ad campaigns too. Just get any random person from the hallway to use your web application, blog theme, Flash game, TVC etc and watch them fumble to grasp it. Experts say you avert 95% of usability problems with this alone.

Buy a copy of “Don’t Make Me Think” by Steve Krug for starters. The philosophies behind the book will change you back to normal again.

The next time you say ‘I need a website’: Remember, you want something normal people can use. And if you insist on being unique in how you want your audience to use your website, you might as well sell cars which forces people to use their hips to steer the wheel.

Being unique and new in your ideas and communication is powerful.

But forcing people to adopt new and unique ways of engaging with you costs normal people time and attention, which they might not have enough of.

Afterthoughts on RSS

Let’s wrap this up with a simple, practical example. The answer to my initial question which started it all. What is a more humanized way to get you to ‘Subscribe to my RSS’?

If you want to know what RSS is and what use it has, get this: RSS describes a way your blog posts (or any information) is output so other devices can read it. Like, say, when you want to know when someone’s new blog post is out, you can subscribe to their RSS with a RSS reader…OK Forget what I said. It’s mutant talk.

See this instead. (Can’t wait to get this in my upcoming re-design of my 3 year old blog) It’s one of the better examples of I’ve seen so far…

It’s taken from this original article from “Website magazine”.

So forget “Subscribe to my RSS”, just speak like a human! It’s a small step to getting more users to listen, and big step at humanizing the web, one experience at a time.

Last year in early May, I gave up everything I knew to embark on a new adventure. The blog post I made about it kind of set the scene.

One year later…

Youths and their communities across Malaysia helped our team make YouthSays a real vehicle of influence: 150,000+ members voicing out on thoughts, issues, and helping brands with market research.

The same youths got together to make YOUTH’09 the largest youth festival in history with 3 day, 36,730 youths and 100+ activities.

We’re now profitable, well funded, have the right business partnerships to invest in long-term growth.

And most of all, we are equipped to focus on what we do best…
Build youth communities.

Now, what’s next?

We’re rebranding our company to Youth Asia to better reflect our business direction.

We start work on Monday a new office space to cope with upcoming growth, and work closer with strategic partners.

Immediately, we’re investing in building and enhancing 3 more youth communities in Malaysia.

As you can guess I want to get moving NOW. And I’m not going to wait for the new corporate identity, website, or blabla to come up, all we know is we need to get the right people on board, and make it happen together, so I’m just gonna type some stuff out right here while the world turns:

My impulsive Saturday morning digression produced a photoshoot with Jules the party animal. Some of you may recognize him from the infamous Cat Got Your Tongue parties, or thegreydelay comic strip.

Yeah I know, he runs wild. So here I attempt to capture him: His emotions, running through his fur as he lounges on my Doof.

I’m not paid to blog about the Doof btw.

It’s just that my friends behind Doof created a product I have been wetting myself about as a kid: A huge, invincible, comfortable beanbag! Way to go Kelvin for a <strike>solid</strike> satisfying product, and such a witty tagline like “Plush Booty, No Cooty”.

I am a huge fan of the bag. And so is Jules…

Jules the party animal says:

“Captivity isn’t easy for a wild cat like myself.”

“The urban jungle can really wear you down.”

“Even cultured tigers like myself need a safe place to rest the weight of the world on.”

“Yeah. I use a Doof.”

“I spend hours on my Doof. Sometimes, I spend minutes.”

“Yeah. That’s me. Just sitting there growling to myself, re-asserting my dominance over the food chain. Without hurting anyone, of course.”

“Oh, and I do most of my reading on a Doof, too. I read, and read, and let it sink it in… Being the sensitive animal I am, sometimes I cry on it. My Doof tells me it’s OK to cry. It says it’s tear-proof. So I cry. And I feel like, like, everything’s gonna be OK…”

Khailee says:

Um, yeah. OK. OK Jules, that’s OK for now. Just stop.

Right. Where were we?

Oh we’re about done, actually. I supposed to get real work done today.

So if you want to continue this conversation, leave Jules out of it and get in touch with them via their Facebook group or email doof.industries@gmail.com, ask em what colors and sizes they have. They also do beanbag rental for events.

I sent an email to 100 people that night.

It was a twilight experiment with kindness. And dying for animals. I’m republishing it here just to see… what would you have done, if I wrote this email to you?

Heya,

I was going through my contact list on Gmail and picked out your name.

Slightly random, maybe, but not really….
I chose to write to you, for a reason.

There were hundreds of other names, but nah, I wouldn’t send this email to them. I chose to send this email to you.

Why?

Somehow, I imagine, you believe in dreams, not so much in dreaming… but I thought you were the type who would FIGHT to live a dream.
Or at least believe that people should do so.

Well, this is what happened to me.

My friend, Justin Mott, he’s a brilliant photographer / photojournalist. He is on his way to documenting the photography assignment of his dreams — to fly around the world to capture, and immortalize people who dedicate their lives to caring and preserving animals. People who would die, and have died for animals.

He’s on his way, but not quite there, you see.

So Justin badgers me with emails, spamming my facebook wall, amongst other things, asking that I help vote for him on this competition which will PAY HIM to go on that assignment. Amused by his lack of manners, I checked out the link

http://www.nameyourdreamassignment.com/the-ideas/jmott78/in-harms-way-exploring-the-bond-between-humans-and-animals/

AND WHOA
Looks like he’s ALMOST THERE…
Hundreds of people, friends and such have voted for him to win this thing.
He needs to be in the top 20 to stand a chance. And he’s almost there because of so many people who believes in him.

But.

I’m NOT asking you to vote for him.

Confused? Hear me out on this one:

Frankly, I NEVER forward emails, even for a good cause. It’s against my religion. Heck, I don’t even care for animals as much. Or the environment. I can act like it, but I won’t. So I’m not even asking you to forward this. I am generally very selective about what I care about and what I dedicate my life to.

But here’s one thing I do care about: Living our dreams.

Each of us have our dreams, and I generally feel excited to help people live their dreams. And I believe Justin should be on his way to documenting these amazing people who live THEIR dreams caring for animals. Especially when all it takes us is a click to decide his destiny
http://www.nameyourdreamassignment.com/the-ideas/jmott78/in-harms-way-exploring-the-bond-between-humans-and-animals/

Most of all…………..

Part of me feels like the reason I can live my dreams, is because so many people, strangers, friends, so many people believe in my dream, and have helped me along the way to live it.

Think about it. All those times out of friggin nowhere people do kind things for you. WTF.

So yes.

I’m not asking you to vote for him.

I’m asking you to vote for YOU - the part of you who believes in dreams. The part of you who might one day need help from strangers to live your dream.

That’s why I wrote to you.

If you feel a tingling in your pants to want to forward this email to a few people, ok, but hurry coz we don’t have time. We’ve only got maybe 24 hours till Justin’s deadline, so even if you just voted, it’ll be enough
http://www.nameyourdreamassignment.com/the-ideas/jmott78/in-harms-way-exploring-the-bond-between-humans-and-animals/

I gotta run now.
I got some sleep to catch.
Remember to write me sometime.
Or follow me on twitter http://twitter.com/khailee

Here’s to living our dreams.

Khailee

PS ~~~~ I chose 122 people to write this email to, REMEMBER TO reply me if you’ve voted, coz I’m keeping count. It’s a sick experiment of mine. I know. So if you decide to vote for Justin http://www.nameyourdreamassignment.com/the-ideas/jmott78/in-harms-way-exploring-the-bond-between-humans-and-animals/ email me

Those who vote n email me will know how many ppl out of 122 actually voted ;)

Take a wild guess, how many out of the 122 voted?

UPDATE: Justin went from not even being in the top 20 to being #4 in 24 hours thanks to you. He is one step away from winning this dream assignment and living his dream, because of you.

UPDATE #2: An example of emails replies I got to my mail

stop this infatuation with animals. the polar bear wallpaper was bad enough.

LOVE MACHINE! i spammed about this too! like yesterday! i went to town and back with this link. i sincerely hope justin gets this. so you can count me in on your sick little statistical endeavor.

voted for justin, but i felt as if i voted for him just because you told me to

Voted! Hey, tomorrow is International Pillow Fight Day.

beb. i registered n all like today n then tried to vote n nothing happend. maybe im too late. im all for the animals tho. how?

I voted. To Dreams my friend…..

you could’ve just gave me the link, i’d do it. long emo email not necessary

you’re a silly person. but i like silly people. So i vote for you, the silly man, not me.

I leapt out of bed at 7am this morning, wondering what had just happened.

My body, surprisingly, is fine. Blistered, marathoned feet, aching trapezius muscles aside, my mutant healing powers must have took care of the rest.

My mind, on the other hand, was suspicious.

For the past 10 days I’ve survived on 4 to 6 hours of sleep a day, 1 to 2 very irregular meals a day, and called upon more mental and emotional energy than I knew I had.

Felt like I returned from scout camp. Or nazi camp. Ok maybe not nazi camp. I’m guessing people don’t actually return from nazi camp to blog. So yes, a really long and multi-tasking kind of scout camp.

But It wasn’t scout camp, either. It was delivering Malaysia’s Largest Youth Lifestyle Festival, YOUTH’09.

And my mind is still suspicious.

After all the punishing I put myself through, instead of ‘crashing’, I leapt out of bed at 7am, lay around thinking for an hour, did a bunch of chin-ups, and here I am, the only one in the office, blogging like you’re listening.

I know there’s a huge mess to clean up. And loads of post event work with clients, press, partners, volunteers, youths etc to follow up with. The road ahead is long.

Yet, I feel fine.

YOUTH’09 has re-affirmed that everything can be resolved if you’re looking for solutions. It has also re-affirmed to me that the practice of patience, kindness, and compassion always wins.

There’s also so much good stuff to reflect upon, soak in, and tie up in my head. And of course, the business direction for 2009 will be a real adventure.

So why is my mind is suspicious?

I admit, there is a part of me which wonders when I will give up, burn out, or get really beaten. Because really, the journey has just begun.

But I also know that it is this self-doubt, suspicious inner skeptic, which is the real challenge, not anything else. I know it’s this suspicion which prevents people from pushing through to achieve what they intend to. And I know, if I keep moving forward in spite of suspicion, nothing can stop me.

Thank you, friends, youths, volunteers, partners, and team for believing. Couldn’t have done it without you. Will write a proper thank you soon. Will clean up the office now.

Update: Part of this post was featured here in The Malay Mail, thanks Sheila!

If I knew my brief encounter with the Prosperity Burger at McDonalds would haunt me forever, I would’ve never made that order. But you know how it can be difficult to predict the future right? It’s much easier to blog about the past, and act like you knew it all along.

However, this story plays itself out quite differently.

Some men say that a woman can tear even the strongest man apart.

But with a prosperity burger?

Well, let’s start this story at almost midnight, on a recent Thursday. A very hungry Thursday. My gut suggested grabbing a prosperity burger from McDonalds (yeah I know, I usually avoid McDonalds, but I was in the mood for beef, and there wasn’t many beefy options at the time).

Little did I know what a horrible choice it would be.

Because it led me to “her”. Yes, her. She was standing right there, behind the McDonald’s counter in her clean white headscarf. Innocent. Her pleasant demeanor invited me to approach her, and initiate the conversation that would change everything.

The deadly order

“One double prosperity burger, just the burger, no fries or drink or any of the other stuff”

Damn her. She accepted my money like a pro. Smiling. Clearly, she has done this before, many times. I didn’t think too much of it, after all, I was in McDonalds paying for a burger. I don’t overthink such things.

Upon handing me my receipt, she said “Duduk dulu.”, smiling. Which means “Sit down, first” in Malay. She didn’t give me much of a choice. Firm but friendly. I obeyed.

Moments later, she passed me my Prosperity Burger, still smiling. But my thoughts were only on the burger. For someone on the brink of starvation, everything looked like food. Her headscarf contained beef patties. Her lips were made of ketchup.

And she fulfilled my desires.

Having an actual burger in my mouth, at the time, was like having my daydreams come to life. Oh it was so, so good.

But funnily enough, something felt wrong.

It didn’t taste right.

I looked at the burger. Seemed fine.

I went for my second bite.

Yummy. OK. MM. Yes. Ok. Hmm. OK. Halt.

Something tastes wrong.

Something IS wrong.

Very wrong.

I looked at the burger again.

I knew it.

The edge of reason

What I was holding in my hands completely DISGUSTED ME.

It was actually a SINGLE prosperity burger.

What sort of vilified heartless soul would cheat me of my magic gastronomoment?

Didn’t she know I paid for a DOUBLE prosperity burger?

I was outraged. RM16 for a double burger is silly. Starved senseless boys like me fall for it. But RM16 for a single?

I was back at a counter with a burger in my hand, demanding the additional beef patty I deserved. Deep down, I was hoping she would even let me finish this single AND give me a new double. Then I would have TRIPLE prosperity burger and be a very prosperous guy.

But no. She had other plans.

Smiling of course, she said nothing. Her body language instructed me to instead, give up my single burger. I was hesitant. If I gave her my burger, I would have no burger. What would she want to do with my half eaten burger anyway? I bet she could get plenty of burgers from where she is at.

But after some more of her smiling, and hand gestures, I gave in, and handed her my burger.

I could see her. Holding my burger. Walking behind the trays. She spoke to some dude who I assume is a manager of sorts. Good. She is using my half butchered burger as evidence to give me plenty more burgers. Burgers I deserved. Right? RIGHT? Huh, lady?

But no. Like I said, she had other plans. Involving torture.

The moments which followed happened in slow motion. She would look at me, smiling, then gently look downwards, letting my burger slip out of her hands… I would stretch my arm across the counter shouting “Kaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaakkk….” (“Sister, in Malay. Polite way of referring to “devil woman”)

SLAM DUNK. She friggin threw a PERFECTLY GOOD burger into the bin.

A perfectly good burger HOLY MOTHER.

Sure, it was missing one beef patty. But surely it didn’t deserve the bin? Think about what could’ve been my free burger. Think about the starving African children without prosperity burgers. Wasted. Didn’t she hear me scream? What was she smiling about?

OK. No more Mr.Nice guy.

In perfectly broken Malay I demanded answers:

“Did you just throw the burger away?

Or did you put it in some drawer? Can you take it out? I can still eat it.

It was a good burger. Can you dust it a bit and bring it out for me? You didn’t throw it away, did you? C’mon. Did you throw it away?”

The only response was the same devious smile she so consistently maintained. Mocking me. Her lips no longer reminded me of ketchup. It made me think of blood.

“Duduk dulu”. She ordered me to sit down again, smiling.

Defeated, I went into the corner of McDonals and sulked. She eventually passed me a double prosperity burger (believe me, I checked). I didn’t even look at her, in fear of her safety. Hungry men can do nasty things. I wolfed the burger down and drove off, still grieving over the innocent burger sacrificed at the hands of that… that… heartless beast.

The drive home was a long one.

Between the traffic lights, I fought against my emotions. Stop. Go. Stop. Go. I obeyed, yet I didn’t want to. What’s the point? Why should I listen and obey the social constructs of our ‘civil’ society, when there may be dozens of innocent burgers out there DYING as a result?

Post trauma rationalization

Yes, I know you may be emotionally worked up upon reading this. It is kind of a big deal. That’s OK. I know how you feel. No need to over-react, my dear. Let’s slow down a bit and make sense of the situation.

Times like these are testing.

You question the deeper things.

What’s right and wrong? Was it right for the smiling lady to destroy my burger? Was it wrong for me to feel bad about the incident, despite me getting bonus burger bites at the end of it?

As far as my lawyer friends laughed, there are no statutory laws, landmark cases, or legal implications useful to the situation. Turning our backs against the law, we’re forced to fall back on something equally made-up: our moral compass.

To use this compass, we need to cut our heartstrings from the equation with the reliably sharp broadsword of logic, and invite a special guest onto this episode.

Meet my friend Norman. Normative ethics.

Normative ethics involves arriving at moral standards that regulate right and wrong conduct. In a sense, it is a search for an ideal litmus test of ‘what is proper conduct’ (I stole of all this smart talk from this website, just so you know I am not nearly as smart, or as original as I can sound.)

According to normative ethics, there are 3 ways to (very simplistically) look at, and judge the prosperity burger incident – and who was right and wrong.

1) Virtue Theory

This is where virtues, like values or habits, like wisdom, courage, temperance, justice, generosity, self-respect, etc is called upon to justify what is right.

Verdict:

Since

I cannot describe any good virtues to justify the smiling lady’s waste of my burger.

My good virtue is ‘Valuing food and not wasting it’

Hence, by virtue theory, I am morally right.

However, some might argue that the lady was protecting me from having too many prosperity burgers (which are clearly bad for me). Perhaps the lady didn’t want me to smell like pepper and onions for a month, or add too many calories to my diet. We need to look at this objectively.

2) Duty Theories

This suggests that all of us have some sort of duty, or obligation. Such as the Golden Rule: “We should do to others what we would want others to do to us.” For example: I shouldn’t spit at babies and young children, if I don’t like being spitted at myself.

Verdict:

She should not throw away my perfectly good burger, in the same way she wouldn’t want me to meet her at home later and throw away her nasi lemak.

Hence, she is morally wrong.

3) Consequentialist Theories

“An action is morally right if the consequences of that action are more favorable than unfavorable.” Or “the means justifies the ends”.The most popular form is Utilitarianism: Eg. “It is right if it results in the greater good to the most people”.

Verdict:

The disposal of a perfectly good burger benefited NO ONE. Ok?? NO ONE. However, giving the burger to me would have at least benefited me, right, and consequently my loyal support and positive emotions of gratitude will indirectly benefit her.

Hence giving me the perfectly good burger was morally right.

Conculsion

So there you have it.

A partially fictional (of course I’m not worked up about a friggin burger. Though it was a perfectly good one. A good, edible, burger. A prosperous beefy burger.) moral dilemma thoroughly detailed, debated, and demystified, without any tangible effect on what happened.

Looks like you can’t change the past with <strike>bitching</strike> rhetoric after all ;)

Though you can change how you feel about it. And perhaps how you would feel about the future incidents. Right?

You might even ask, how would I deal with a similar situation in the future?

Since you asked. I thought of ordering a DOUBLE prosperity burger, eat one of the patties, and bring it back to the lady and accuse her of giving me a SINGLE. Ha! Take that! But that wouldn’t be morally right, by any moral measure. Oh no. And it probably won’t get her stop smiling either.

Anyways. I’ve been working so hard lately, this blog post really is an absurd satire thingy to entertain myself. Not to be taken too seriously ;)

Hope 2008 has been a great year for you. Here’s to a prosperous new year!

A few days ago, I danced alongside reps from IDEO, Google, Microsoft, IBM, Cisco, at MSC Innotech 2008.

Perhaps its not fair to call it a dance, although that would have been neat. Imagination aside, it was more like a series of talks.

Mine was a concise 9 minute session, directed at entrepreneurs who just got their pre-seed grants:

Made a case against common perceptions of ‘innovation’.

Examples and experience from managing a fast-growing startup Joel and I have recently put together.

Definitely not one of my best speeches, considering the ANIMAL IN ME didn’t emerge. But I was still accused of being energetic, and there may be some useful ideas in there, especially for those from a tech background, moving into business.

(My full speech transcript is at the end of this blog post)

You can also download slides of other speakers’ presentations.

Speech aside, I met so many cool people at the event!

For example, you would never expect a Venture Capitalist (VC) to be like Chok Bee Wee, Managing Director of Teak Capital.

Chok, who invested in Jobstreet and helped groom them to be the hundred million dollar company it is today, is not your typical VC. She is straightforward and caring, LIKE A MOTHER. Feels like someone who will look out for you, and won’t hesitate to tell you to your room is a complete mess.

Then there’s Pamir, a VC from investment group Newtonmore Advisors in the UK. He gave us plenty of good advice.

We also bumped into successful young entrepreneurs like Bob Chua of Pulse Group. One of the more bobular dudes who spoke that day, his journey from bedroom entrepreneur to and IPO in AIMS in 33 months, has MOMENTUM written all over him, pushing the future of market research as we know it. At the rate he is going, he will easily be one of Malaysia’s most globally successful entrepreneurs in the next 3 years.

Got a pic with Ashroff, too, a familiar face in these circles! Another dude who makes you feel like family.

We also met two silly looking zombies who look eerily familiar.

And Ganesh Kumar, a real success story. Read “Going for broke” (Published by TeAM, in bookstores now) to hear his full story.

It’s worth the read.

Many early stage startups were also at Innotech. Like Socialwalk, with Tham King Yiew, who was ranting about bad experiences with web developers.

And how can I not forget… The MDeC Crew!

Life has been full of surprises ever since I set out to sail on my own. And along the way, friends have strangers have been very kind to me.

I don’t catch up with Roslan and MDeC team often, but in the background they’ve been opening up many doors to local technologists and entrepreneurs. I have personally benefited a lot from the efforts of the MDeC crew, including the invitation to speak here at Innotech 2008.

Lets have a look at a few of them!

“Good Vibes” Syafinaz.

Jamie “Rock Steady” Haniff

And Roslan, um, “Bakri” Zakaria

Thanks everyone!

Overall it was a great day with great food, great conversations, and we left Innotech having added validation of our business model, and added excitement to follow through with the journey we set out on.

For those of you who are curious about my presentation, here it is:

Khailee Ng, The Youth Intelligence, Innotech 2008

I remember stumbling across something pretty neat, a while ago.

I was 24 years old at the time.

It was late in the night. Like 4am. And I was sort of, half dressed in front of the computer. Doing what young, hot-blooded young men do in front the computer. (You know, reading techcrunch and stuff.)

Then I came across this picture:

It’s not the most arousing picture, I know. It’s a surfer. A male surfer. And he’s not even wearing a bikini. Which is probably a good thing.

So why is this surfer?

Well, this picture is a powerful metaphor, and reminder for something we already know.

It’s actually taken off a slide from Greg McAdoo, partner at Sequoia Capital. As most of you may know, Sequoia Capital is a pretty large and successful VC, funded the likes of Yahoo! And Google.

Greg brought up this slide when he spoke at startup school about the kind of companies he funds, and the conditions required for a company to really scale. (See his full presentation here)

He likened an entrepreneur to a surfer. Where you could be a really hardworking and smart entrepreneur, but if you’re not riding on a really big wave, you’re not going to be growing a really big company.

He also spoke about how the biggest most successful companies of our time were NOT about trying to create waves which weren’t there - but seeing big waves coming, and riding them in an interesting way.

So I stared at the picture for a long while, and this question crossed my mind.

And I’m sure any entrepreneur or VC like yourself would at some point wonder the same….

Are we really riding on a big wave?

Like, a really big wave?

Or an imaginary one?

Ladies and gentlemen.

Thanks for having me here. It’s great to get to know you. I’m Khailee. The technology and community director with The Youth Intelligence, and cofounder of Malaysia’s Largest Youth Opinion Community, YouthSays.

6 months after my semi-naked night surfing the web, looking at surfers, When I discovered 3 things

I am still 24 years old

I’ve got more clothes on

And I’ve been asked to speak here today about “Social Net and Entrepreneurship HOT SPOTS”

Which is very convenient if you think about it.

Because a HOT SPOT in the social net and entrepreneurship, is probably not too different from a really hot trend or are and perhaps a really big wave.

So let’s travel into a really big wave today, and try to find a new perspective on how to ride them. Cool?

I’ll share my perspective as a young Malaysian, as well as an entrepreneur currently scaling up a profitable company.

We’ll be talking about this ONE BIG WAVE we are all being affected by.

This is ONE BIG WAVE many may know about – but not many may know what to do about it. This of course opens up great opportunities for all of us, and I’ll get to that in a bit.

I’ll also touch on something I’ve personally discovered is of utmost importance in riding big waves – especially when you’re already armed with great technology and belief in your product.

So to get our feet wet.

Let’s dive straight into THIS BIG WAVE – and have a look at the OBVIOUS part.

2 MILLION YOUTHS WILL MAKE THE DIFFERENCE

Front page of theStar newspaper last week.

Fellow Malaysians will know firsthand how the government is waking up to this generation of youths who are currently exercising their right to decide on what they want, when they want it.

And it’s becoming clear, it’s not just in Malaysia, this wave is hitting the entire region.

So what’s going on with these youths?

I’ve been involved with building communities all my life. I started what was once the most vibrant Malaysian socio-political youth community online, some offline communities in the local music scene, and later I was involved with rallying communities around products and web applications in US & UK markets.

And just like any Malaysian infected with too much 2.0, I’d use to think.

“Oh Malaysia is so backward, it’ll take a couple of years before our society is revolutionized by technology.”

But you know how life is full of surprises. It seems this ‘future’ is happening. Right now.

(The above is based on a nationwide sample of 8,000 Malaysian youths. Survey conducted by The Youth Intelligence, October 2008)

As we speak, Malaysian youths are organizing themselves online, and on-ground, around the issues they care about, their own interest and passions. You can email me if you want examples, but ladies and gentlemen, this is just the beginning.

Now. For the not so OBVIOUS part.

Businesses are actually waking up. It’s not fair to accuse them of being in the dark, because the past 6 months, feedback from all the biggest brands and agencies tell me that they are definitely keen to ride this wave with us.

Some have mentioned, they read the papers and think…

Wow, 2 million young voters will make the difference. How about 2 million young consumers?

Especially when by 2010, over 65% of Malaysians will be under 35.

That’s a lot of youths. Youths who are using the internet in interesting ways. The same is happening to Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines and so forth.

But here’s the BIG FAT GAP.

Last Friday, I was meeting a new client. They’re a multinational brand with a growing focus on the youth market, and after some discussion, they blurted out.

“Look. I want to be transparent about this. I’ve got a budget of XX,XXXX that I have to spend online by this December”

“But my suppliers have been giving me proposals I just don’t understand, they’re asking me to spend on banner ads on these sites, but how does that really convert to sales?”

The businesses want to get on board – but as entrepreneurs and marketers we can’t accuse them of being BLUR about it - we have to show them what that really means.

Sometimes, it seems, there are way too many businesses focused on giving people new new new – on innovation this and that – but not enough effort is being put into translating that into something of OBVIOUS value.

We’re standing here armed with technology, talent, ideas, funding – and to truly ride waves of this sort, what we need, is more marketing focus.

This bleeds into all our decisions.

Are we going to build a new feature? Or improve my presentation deck. Am I going to hire a new programmer, or meet new clients?

Technology is what drives this wave – but it’s not all there is to riding it.

In the same was we laugh at technologists when they say “Build and they will come” Marketers fall into that trap too. Theirs is “Tell them and they will come”.

Well, I experienced that I had to do much more.

Just a personal example, just 6 months ago, my business partner and I put up a website for Malaysian youths to do surveys for brands, and to discuss issues, share opinions, and answer each others questions. It quickly grew to 40,000 members – and it keeps on going…

But the only reason why our business is growing profitably right now with big brands like ASTRO CELCOM etc was because we STOPPED focusing on innovating on our technology – and focused on innovating on how we can help businesses with the existing technology and products we had.

On many meetings, I wasn’t there to sell technology – or potential – I was there to sell them a problem and solution. I had to be a marketing strategist, a management consultant, and creative agency all at once – to push this to market.

In summary.

It used to be that businesses and the media told the youths what they wanted – and now the youths are telling the world what they want.

And that’s a wave that has hit.

While technological innovation in this space is great – there’s a lot of opportunity for great marketers, too.

So if you’re already out there, given limited resources, if your product or technology is ‘good enough’, stop innovating on it. Focus on marketing and help people to use it.

Here’s a slide with some links, and my contact. Should you find yourself semi naked in front of a computer at night, drop me a line.

And I’d like to close by saying.

We live in some pretty exciting times!

I’d like to think we’re in the same boat. Maybe some of you have not caught your wave. Some of us are in the midst of it. Some of us are leading it.

And as we roll forward with entrepreneurship and innovation in technology and marketing – let’s enjoy the thrill of innovating on our minds as well.

After analyzing 30-years worth of national data from time-use studies and a continuing series of social attitude surveys, the Maryland researchers report:

Spending time watching television may contribute to viewers’ happiness in the moment, with less positive effects in the long run.

By contrast, unhappy people watched significantly more television in their spare time.

The short, temporary pleasure of television is similar to addiction: “Addictive activities produce momentary pleasure but long-term misery and regret,”

So should you stop watching TV forever? How about movies?

Look. I don’t know dude. Go read up on the original article.

Personally, I don’t endorse watching TV. Or smoking. Or juggling hand grenades. They just don’t seem like useful habits. Unless useful = avoid tuning into your own ongoing drama a.k.a your life, your personal growth, and real issues.

Think about it. What if someone you knew spent the next month replacing the time they use to watch TV to tune into their own life instead?

How would their life change?

And our parents. We have to stop them! It’s scary how many hours our parents spend on the TV each day! Even more as they age. And they used to tell us to stay off the telly.

How times have changed.

I guess some people might actually learn stuff from TV. In the same way you might learn stuff from real life.

But what do I know. I haven’t watched TV intentionally since I was 16. And that doesn’t imply I did anything useful either ;P

In the end, the big issue isn’t just about TV. It’s up to how we choose to use/ waste our time.

Most people get ahead during the time that others waste. ~ Henry Ford

For example: We can find so many other things to use/ waste time. Who knows, maybe science will also show you that watching YouTube makes you unhappy! Or fat? Or cancerous? Or fat cancerous and unhappy?

I hope not. I spent 20 minutes watching this on replay:

And I spent an hour making this blog post. What a complete waste of time ;P

How many promises have you made in your lifetime?

Promises to yourself. Promises to your boss. Your mother. Your friends.

What if you have kept them all? How would your world be today?

How many promises do we make, both knowingly, and unknowingly. Because when you think about it… you’re not the one making promises… promises are made when people believe you.

A promise becomes a genuine promise if there is genuine BELIEF in it… for example:

A promise to yourself

You say to yourself, “I’ll go to the gym 3 times a week”. Do you believe yourself? If you don’t fully believe yourself, it’s not w very good promise is it. No belief, no promise.

It’s probably like a goal. And it’s like OK if you didn’t hit a goal, but its NOT OK to break a promise.

Promises are very different from ’setting goals’, voicing out your intent, and ‘trying your best’. Promises have a different weight and effect on those who make them, and those who believe them.

A promise to others

As a brand owner / marketer, let’s say your product says “Gives you radiant skin”. If the customer believes you, your product had better damn well live up to it, or you’ll be breaking a promise, and losing repeat customers, and failing in business.

When you look at a brand, what do you expect from it, what do you believe about a brand? The moment your product is out there, people may buy into it, and suddenly, you’re making a promise whether you like it or not.

Marketers talk about a BRAND PROMISE - and they should keep it.

Khailee’s Promise

I previously “mentioned” that I would show you my latest Halloween costume, right? And if you believe me, that’s as good as a promise.

And I will stay true to it:

So here you go. I was dressed as SERENA WILLIAMS.

World number #1 baby!

Here I am trying to be a <strike>tennis</strike> player, hitting on girls:

It was fun at first, then it got uncomfortable (for onlookers, too), as my wallet, handphone, carkeys and such was in this waist pouch underneath the front of my skirt. So I had to like, play pennis whenever I answered the phone.

Anyways, where was I. Oh, promises.

Big Promises

Just a closing thought.

There’s a lot of power in keeping our promises. Shared promises can unite nations. And shared promises kept, will be completely worth the effort put into keeping them. (Hint hint Anwar or Obama)

The last 6 months of my life has been the most intense, mostly because I’ve been focusing every working hour on keeping my promises, to my clients, to my team, and to myself. And because so many young Malaysians and brand owners believe in YOUTH’09 and YouthSays, it creates very big, shared promises, which once kept, I know will completely be worth the effort put into keeping them.
