Khairy Qualifies To Contest UMNO Youth Chief Post

Khairy Jamaluddin has finally made it to the starting grid in his bid to become the next Umno Youth chief. He obtained the 39th nomination necessary from the Tangga Batu division today. He still trails Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir in the number of nominations received so far.

KUALA LUMPUR: It’s official. Khairy Jamaluddin can now take on Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir for the Umno youth chief post.

Khairy, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s son-in-law, secured his 38th, 39th, and 40th nominations from the Tawau, Tangga Batu and Gua Musang divisions.

On hearing the news, Khairy said that he was “pleased to have qualified given the level of scrutiny I have had to go through, from the time I entered the political arena in 1999.”

“I shall subject myself now to an even more intense screening not just by delegates to the Pemuda UMNO General Assembly but all Malaysians who have encountered a range of stories, good and bad, about me.

“I accept that the onus is on me to explain my convictions and reasons for offering myself as a prospective leader,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mukhriz, the son of former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, is still in the lead with 64 nominations, well over the crucial 39 needed.

The third contender Datuk Seri Dr Khir Toyo has yet to make it with only 30 nominations.

His earlier nomination from Gua Musang was nullified and in a new meeting convened on Saturday, the nomination was given to Khairy instead.

The 191 divisions have until Nov 9 to hold their meetings and offer their nominations ahead of party polls in March.

Khairy is now underdog in Umno Youth race

Khairy Jamaluddin is within a whisker of qualifying to contest the Umno Youth chief post. He has amassed 36 nominations, just three shy of hitting the mark to be eligible to contest in the March party elections.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 19 – With only two weeks left to the end of Umno divisional delegates meetings, Umno Youth deputy chief, Khairy Jamaluddin, with only 33 nominations, remains the underdog for the contest to lead the wing, trailing far behind Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir, who has received 60 nominations, while Datuk Seri Dr Khir Toyo, received 26.

Mukhriz obtained the minimum 38 nominations required to contest for the post on Oct 12, just three days after the start of divisional meetings, while Khairy is still struggling to get the 20% nominations.

Some observers blamed it on the decision by Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi not to defend the party presidency. At the same time, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had also urged Umno members to get rid of Abdullah’s men in the new administration.

The Rembau MP even failed to get a nomination from Putrajaya Umno, a division perceived to be inclined towards him as the Youth chief, Datuk Zaki Zahid is also a special officer to the Prime Minister.

He obtained only 22 votes, while Mukhriz got 33 and Datuk Seri Dr Khir Toyo, 22. A total of 90 delegates attended the meeting on Saturday afternoon that lasted for more than six hours.

However, Zaki retained his position, beating former Putrajaya Umno Youth exco member Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz, by merely three votes. Some delegates had predicted that Zaki would be another casualty in the uprising against Abdullah and his men.

Zaki was laughing when asked to interpret the voting trend, but admitted he would prefer someone else to be nominated for the Umno Youth chief post.

“I wish him congratulations; I was there when he came on Thursday, he was welcomed here in Putrajaya, although my personal preference is different, but we abide by the choice made by the delegates here,” said Zaki.

But for Tun Faisal, who is also a special officer to Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Husein, the signal for change from the delegates was very clear. He agreed that he did not totally lose the fight, as the division had nominated Mukhriz.

Newly elected Putrajaya Umno Youth deputy chief, Hishamuddin Yahya however was a little shocked by the nomination but not surprised with Zaki’s victory.

He added that less than 48 hours before the start of the meeting the fight for nomination was between Khir and Mukhriz.

“All three candidates were here to meet the delegates, Khairy came on the last day, the delegates have already decided to choose either Khir Toyo or Datuk Mukhriz,” said Hishamuddin, who initially thought Khir would be nominated by the division.

“Maybe the delegates were more impressed with Mukhriz’s campaign work,” he told The Malaysian Insider.

He said that Zaki’s victory shows that leaders linked to Abdullah are not rejected by the party grass roots.

“It is not right to reject someone just because he is connected to the Prime Minister, every leader must be judged individually, it is unfair, just because the Prime Minister is retiring. And Zaki is an active Youth leader, so he was judged based on his performance,” said Hishamuddin.

Detain Khairy under ISA

At the MCA Youth assembly on Friday, Ting called Khairy a "political loser" who should be booked under the ISA. He also wanted former Umno Bukit Bendera division chief Datuk Ahmad Ismail to be held under the same act for describing Malaysian Chinese as pendatang (squatters).He expressed disappointment with the detentions of Sin Chew Daily reporter Tan Hoon Cheng and Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, whom he claimed had done nothing offensive.

(Malaysiakini) A MCA Youth delegate today called on the authorities to detain Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin under the Internal Security Act (ISA) for making racist remarks.

He also wanted the security law to be invoked against suspended Umno Penang leader Ahmad Ismail who courted controversy recently by describing the Chinese in Malaysia as squatters.

Perak delegate Ting Tai Fook made the call during the debates at the MCA Youth annual general meeting held at the party headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.

Khairy, who was one of the VIPs present at the MCA Youth meet this morning, however, left shortly after the opening, before the debates commenced.

Ting took Khairy, who is also the son-in-law of Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, to task over his remarks concerning the ratio of the bumiputera and non-bumiputera quota on scholarships.

He said such remarks were not only condoned by the Umno leadership but also paved the way for Ahmad to make similar offensive remarks.

At this juncture, Ting said the ISA should not be used against civilians as seen in a crackdown last month.

“If we want to use ISA, let’s use ISA against these few people first [...] I also believe Khairy, this irresponsible leader will be defeated badly in the coming Umno Youth chief elections,” he said to applause from the delegates.

The Perak MCA Youth delegate stressed that the ethnic Chinese were not second-class citizens or the servants in this country.

Ting also hit out at Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim and accused him of being a liar for consistently claiming that he has the numbers to form government.

Khairy wants end to right wing Umno politics

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 12 - Umno Youth Chief contender Khairy Jamaluddin said the party can no longer continue with right-wing politics.

"If you continue with right wing politics and try to convince people this is the way forward then I think you have been left behind," he told The Malaysian Insider recently.

Khairy, who is trailing behind Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir in the nominations race so far, had in recent years positioned himself as a somewhat typical Umno Youth-type firebrand politician who frequently championed the need for a continuation of affirmative action.

But in launching his bid for the Umno Youth Chief's post, he has now turned to the platform of running as a "Malaysian," as opposed to that of"Malay."

He acknowledged the big risk he was taking in trying to push some form of reform agenda for Umno.

"Before this we have been an incestuous organisation. We only mingled among ourselves. Now is the time to reach out.

"There are many out there who are not members of Umno, MCA or MIC Youth. If we don't get them, the opposition is going to get them," said Khairy, when met in Kuala Lumpur recently.

"I have looked at what have happened over the last three to four years and I realized that we have made some strategic errors.

"When I searched my soul after the last general election for a platform that is not only popular but is right, I found this is the platform that is right. And I am willing to risk the Umno youth contest in taking up this platform.

So far, his rival Mukhriz has the edge in the contest for nominations.

And while Khairy talks about ideas and reform, the contest is also fast turning into a battle of personalities in a proxy fight between his father-in-law Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi and Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the father of Mukhriz.

At the Besut Umno Youth meeting yesterday, Khairy only obtained seven votes while Mukhriz garnered 200 votes. Even Dr Khir, who is not a favourite in the contest, managed to grab more votes than Khairy. The former Selangor Menteri Besar received 15 votes.

The Besut Umno Youth results appear to suggest there are still many in the party's grassroots who see the contest as one between personalities.

"It is not that Besut doesn't like Khairy, but Mukhriz came to meet the divisional leaders recently," said the newly elected Besut Umno Youth chief, Mahdi Musa.

Mahdi's deputy, Kamarulzaman Idris, was explicit in rejecting Khairy's campaign platform, saying it is not important whether he is standing as a Malay or Malaysian.

"What matters now is for the Umno leadership to convince the Malays and others to have faith in the government and ensure the stability of the country," he told The Malaysian Insider.

Kamarulzaman, who was also newly elected, agrees with his boss that the fact that Mukhriz was here before the meeting helped him in securing the nomination.

"Mukhriz's name was proposed by someone on the stage, while Khairy was proposed by one of the delegates, so the delegates naturally elected the person favoured by the leaders. To get more votes, Khairy's name should have been proposed by one of the Besut Youth leaders," said Kamarulzaman.

Khairy camp cries foul over Kimanis nomination

(Malaysiakini) Supporters of Umno Youth chief aspirant Khairy Jamaluddin are crying foul over the outcome of the Kimanis, Sabah, division meeting yesterday, where rival Mukhriz Mahathir won his first nomination for the wing's topmost post.

A Khairy supporter told Malaysiakini that between 45 to 50 supporters were barred from returning to the Membakut Community Hall near Papar, where the meeting to nominate the Youth top posts was being held.

The group had taken a break from the 12-hour long meeting to go for their Maghrib prayers. But when they returned, they were not allowed to re-enter the hall.

An election by a show of hands later took place, with Mukhriz capturing 51 votes and Khairy pulling 31.

“All the candidates want to see a respectable, democratic and friendly contest, which is why we hope Kimanis will be an isolated event. So far, it has been the only sad episode,” the supporter said.

“After all, our biggest concern is the next general election where Umno must convince young Malaysians to back Barisan Nasional, not fighting among ourselves.”

Khairy: I’m contesting on my own merit

REMBAU, Oct 5 - Umno Youth vice-head Khairy Jamaluddin said he is vying for the post of Youth chief on his own merit without influence or help from other factors.

The Rembau Member of Parliament hoped that the delegates and Umno Youth members would evaluate his candidacy on his personal credibility and strength.

“I hope whatever decision made by the party leadership (president and deputy president) will not influence the vote of the members,” he said at his Hari Raya Open House at the Kampong Gadong Community Hall, Kota, near here today.

He said this when asked about his position as a candidate for the Umno Youth top post if party president Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi were to announce that he would not be seeking re-election.

“The Umno Youth members must choose for the future of the young people in the party. My decision won’t change no matter what the president decides.

“I never served as the son-in-law of the president or prime minister during my tenure as Umno Youth deputy chief.

"I got down to the ground, I became director of the by-election machinery... I conducted programmes and various others things on my own initiative and this will not change whether Pak Lah or Datuk Seri Najib is the president. I will continue with my work as a leader of the young generation in Umno,” he said.

Commenting on the proposal to turn BN into a single party, Khairy said it had its advantages in attracting the interest of every strata of the society to join the party.

He said the political reality currently was that it would be difficult to unite the BN component parties into one single party because there were still issues that were based on race that had yet to be resolved.

Khairy: Postponement will bring problems

(NST) "I don't know if the decision will affect my position (as one of those contesting the Youth wing's top post) or not," he said after distributing Hari Raya gifts to the underprivileged at the Kampung Gadong community hall here. "The way I'm looking at it is from the point of view of a candidate.

"I'm not against the decision but I'm just saying the campaign period has become six months now, which brings its own set of problems.

"When the campaign period is extended from two to six months, we will be focused on politicking for the whole six months."

Khairy, who was accompanied by his expectant wife, Nori Abdullah, said he hoped those responsible for monitoring the campaign would be stringent in enforcing party regulations.

The Rembau MP said he respected the decision made by the Umno supreme council as they would have weighed several factors, including the party's unity and stability.

Khairy said the decision on who was to be elected as the wing's chief and deputy should be left to the division and delegates.

I'm being sabotaged, says Khairy

(Malaysiakini) Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin believes that he is being sabotaged by certain quarters who are preventing party members from meeting him.

The Rembau parliamentarian, who has expressed his desire to contest for the Umno Youth chief post, claims he has proof of this.

"I have proof that there are those trying to stop Umno members from getting to know their leaders," he was quoted as saying by Bernama.

"For me, all party members have the right to get to know their leaders and approach me, so there is no need for such preventions," he added.

Responding to Mukhriz

Khairy, who is also the son-in-law of Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, was commenting on the statement made by Jerlun MP Mukhriz Mahathir who is also vying for the Umno Youth chief post.

Mukhriz, the son of former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, had called for an immediate stop to the attempts of preventing party members from meeting the leaders or candidates.

At present, there are five contenders in the battle for the Youth chief post. Besides Khairy and Mukhriz, the others are Perlis Umno deputy chief Zahidi Zainul Abidin, former Selangor menteri besar Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo and Energy, Water and Communications Minister Shaziman Abu Mansor.

However, the Umno supreme council this morning decided to postpone the party polls and annual general meeting to March next year to allow for a smooth transfer of power from Abdullah to his deputy, Najib Abdul Razak.

The meeting, along with party elections, was scheduled to be held in December.

Khairy - Youth chief contest won’t be easy

KUALA LUMPUR: The contest for the Umno Youth chief post in the coming party polls will be a tough battle, says Umno Youth deputy youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.

He said Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir, the son of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad, and former Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo were strong contenders.

When asked about his chances of winning the contest, he said: “So-so. It will be a tough fight for (Datuk Seri) Khir Toyo, (Datuk) Mukhriz and I.”

Khairy, 32, announced his intention to contest for the post last week.

On his campaigning, he said it was going well and support from the grassroots was good.

Asked what kind of changes he aspired to bring to the movement, he replied: “Umno Youth has to be inclusive. I will be a leader for all Malaysians, not only for Umno Youth members.”

Mukhriz, 44, also saw the contest as a tough fight, saying Khairy and Dr Khir were strong challengers.

“I won’t take it lightly. My first hurdle will be to get enough nominations. If I qualify, my chances will be fair to good.”

Mukhriz said he had met many youth delegates and also obtained support from those holding high posts in the movement.

If he becomes youth chief, he said he would ensure the movement returned to its role of providing checks and balances within the party; as well as listening, understanding and helping resolve problems faced by youths.

“Sometimes, decisions made by the top leadership may be controversial and the movement needs to give alternative views. For the past four years, we have not played this role due to certain reasons.”

Dr Khir, 45 is currently performing his ummrah in Mecca.

A party official who declined to be named said Dr Khir had the edge among kampung folk due to his background.

“It is also what he calls kasih sayang (loving touch). He campaigns in big states like Selangor and areas where there are village folk of Javanese descent in Johor and Perak,” he said.

Each candidate needs 38 nominations to qualify. Another aspirant for the top post is Padang Besar Umno division chief Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin. 48.

Sabah Umno Youth backing for Khairy

Its head Datuk Japlin Akim said Khairy, who is the movement's vice-chief, had shown his leadership qualities that could appeal to the youths and help fulfil their aspirations.

Japlin, who is also Sabah Infrastructure Development Assistant Minister, said Khairy was also known as a knowledgeable and courageous leader, who was vocal in championing the rights and interests of youths.

"He is very friendly with the Sabah Umno Youth members who see no problem in voicing out their problems and needs.

"I believe that Khairy will be able to open the minds of youths towards achieving the national vision through solidarity as contained in the guideline to build camaraderie that he had outlined." he said.

Khairy goes for Umno Youth top post

(NST) Khairy, the Umno Youth deputy chief and member of parliament for Rembau said he took a longer time to decide to run for the post as he needed to study and collect feedback from the party grassroots.

"The decision (to contest) is not mine solely but was reached by all Umno Youth members in the branches and divisions who want me as well as support my quest to continue Umno Youth chief Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein's fight for the party."

Hishammuddin will not be defending the post which he has held for 10 years.

"I am lucky that I was able to work under Hishammuddin for eight years, four years as an exco and the remaining four as his deputy.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank and congratulate Hishammuddin for his successful 10-year tenure," he said at the Rembau Umno Youth service centre here.

Khairy, who announced his decision to an audience including 40 Umno Youth division leaders and five Umno Youth state leaders, said his agenda for the Youth wing would be based on the motto "Setia Kawan" or "Friendship and Unity".

Also present was Umno Youth secretary Datuk Rahman Dahalan and treasurer Datuk Abdul Hamid Mohd Nazahar.

"We want to stress friendship and unity not only among the youth in Umno and BN but among all Malaysian youths as well.

"I am not contesting solely as an Umno Youth member but as a Malaysian as I carry with me a national agenda," he said.

Khairy, 32, is the fourth candidate to enter the race. The others are former Selangor menteri besar Datuk Seri Mohd Khir Toyo, Jerlun MP Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir and Padang Besar Umno Youth head Datuk Zahidi Zainal Abidin.

He described the other contenders as reputable, credible and possessing their own strengths.

"I have a lot of respect for the other contenders as they are my seniors, hence more experienced," he said, adding that the credibility of the other aspirants proved the Youth wing's high reputation.

When asked who would be contesting the deputy's post, he said no individuals had offered themselves.

"No one has come forward so far, so anyone interested can offer themselves. It is a democratic process and I leave it to the divisions and representatives to ensure an eligible leader is chosen for the post."

Khairy: Perak exco duo should be suspended

KUALA KANGSAR: The Pakatan Rakyat government should suspend the two Perak state exco members if its struggle for accountability, transparency and anti-graft practices is real, Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin said.

“In Barisan Nasional, if a leader has been charged (for corruption), it is normal for him to take leave,” he said, citing a case in 2004 where the then Land and Cooperative Development Minister Tan Sri Kasitah Gadam was dropped from the Cabinet on being charged with corruption.

“But in Perak, both of the exco members involved were not asked by the Perak Mentri Besar to resign from their posts. Where is all that talk about transparency, accountability and anti-graft practices?

“Even though they have been charged in court, the two exco members are still in office,” said Khairy, referring to the corruption charges brought against Perak executive councillors Jamaluddin Mohd Radzi and Mohd Osman Mohd Jailu over the development of a piece of land in Seri Iskandar by the Anti-Corruption Agency.

Khairy was speaking to reporters at a Nur Ramadan gathering jointly organised by the Umno Youth wing and Amanah Raya Berhad where cash aid were presented to orphans, single mothers and the poor at Masjid Taman Kuala Kangsar here after the breaking of fast on Saturday.

Khairy: 'Anwar will sell the country'

(NST) He said Anwar would also immediately sign a Free Trade Agreement with the United States.

"He would also agree with US intentions to set up a naval base in Sabah. I obtained all this information from very reliable sources," said Khairy at a ceramah at the Barisan Nasional Youth operation centre near here.

"We would like to know how Anwar is obtaining huge funds for his by-election campaign. Just look at the posters. I'm sure it would have cost him millions. We do not want him to sell off the country.

"If PKR is in power for the next five years, I'm sure they can sell the country. Anwar is a hypocrite of the highest order."

Khairy also lambasted Parti Keadilan Rakyat for the way its members and supporters behaved on nomination day for the by-election.

"PKR claimed that Umno practises the samseng culture. However, they are the ones who resort to such methods as could be clearly seen on nomination day and in Anwar's campaigns."

Khairy said although he did not want to resort to personal attacks, he had to bring up certain issues regarding Anwar as it involved his credibility as a leader.

"We are talking about the future of the country and we want a leader who is credible and responsible to the people."

He said Anwar claimed corruption was practised by the BN leaders but it was during his time as finance minister that many of hiscronies had benefited.

Khairy said the BN government was committed to fighting corruption and this was obvious when, three years ago, Perak executive council member Datuk Azman Mahalan was charged with corruption although he was a good friend of the prime minister.

He also claimed he had been informed that Pas no longer trusted Anwar and did not want him as the prime minister.

"Pas is not here to campaign for Anwar. They have rejected him. It is just that they are reluctant to inform him of their decision."

Khairy said he was willing to resign as Umno Youth deputy head on Sept 16 if Anwar fulfils his promise of being able to form the new government.

"However, if he fails to do so, he must then be willing to resign as PKR de facto leader," he added.

Terengganu Umno Youth backs Khairy for top post

KUALA TERENGGANU: The state Umno Youth has suggested that national deputy youth wing chief Khairy Jamaluddin replace Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein as chief.

Terengganu Umno Youth chief Mohd Sabri Alwi said the motion to lobby for Khairy was reached unanimously by the wing’s leaders in all eight divisions here.

“We feel he is the right candidate to steer the wing to greater heights, especially with Umno currently facing numerous challenges,” said Mohd Sabri after a closed-door briefing session organised by Umno Youth at a leading hotel here, which Khairy attended.

“He (Khairy) is a capable leader and would be able to counter

any adversities faced by the wing and the party as a whole,” he added.

Mohd Sabri also noted that Khairy had been loyal to Hishammuddin as the latter’s deputy.

“Based on party tradition, the chief’s post should be taken over by the deputy and therefore Khairy is the right candidate.”

When met later, Khairy said he was still undecided whether to put his name up for the post, although he had received support from several states.

Najib, Khairy deny Raja Petra claims

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Razak has dismissed Raja Petra Kamarudin’s statutory declaration implicating his wife as having had a hand in the murder of Mongolian translator Altantuya Shaaribuu as “total lies, fabrication and total garbage.”

The Deputy Prime Minister said the allegations in the statutory declaration were a “desperate and pathetic attempt to discredit and taint my political image.”

He said his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, had already given her statement to the police.

The Prime Minister too would be making his recorded statement to the police.

“I welcome the police investigation and hope they would be concluded soon,” he told reporters on Wednesday after chairing a Cabinet committee meeting on illegal immigrants.

Raja Petra, editor of online news portal and aggregator Malaysia Today, filed his explosive statutory declarationon June 18 with the KL High Court, claiming to have been "reliably informed" that three other persons were present during the murder of Altantuya on Oct 19, 2006.

He claimed that Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad was in the know as the Prime Minister had received a written military report on the murder that was then handed over to his son-in-law Khairy Jamaluddin for “safe-keeping.”

Raja Petra was charged for sedition last month for implying the deputy prime minister was involved in Altantuya’s murder.

On Tuesday, Abdullah said he had not received any such military intelligence report and that it was unacceptable for Raja Petra to have made such a claim,

When reporters asked Najib about it at Wednesday's press conference, he said: “Why are you interested in garbage? Why comment when everything is total lies, fabrication and total garbage.”

Asked Raja Petra’s motive for making such a claim, Najib said: "I don’t know. You better ask him. Why ask me?”

“I have no conclusion except it’s a desperate and pathetic attempt to discredit and taint my political image.”

Asked if he believed it was political motivated, Najib said: “I can’t see any other reason.”

Later on Wednesday, Khairy also denied ever having received such an intelligence report.

He said he had given his statement to the police on Tuesday night.

REMBAU, Feb 24 (Bernama) -- A big crowd including foreign media turned out at the Merdeka Hall, Rembau District Council, here Sunday to witness candidates for the Rembau parliamentary seat file their nomination papers.

At the centre of attraction was Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Khairy Jamaluddin. the prime minister''s son-in-law.

Khairy, who is Umno Youth deputy chief, arrived at the hall with Negeri Sembilan menteri besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan at 8am. Mohamad Hasan is defending the Rantau state seat.

They were accompanied by thousands of BN supporters to the nomination centre.

The foreign media covering the event included those from Singapore and France.

Two fixed-wing aircraft carrying Umno and BN flags flew past to lend an air of excitement to the BN supporters.

About 100 police personnel, including those from the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU), maintained public order at the nomination centre. Present was Negeri Sembilan police chief Datuk Osman Salleh.

(Malaysiakini) Negri Sembilan's Rembau parliament seat will see a battle between two 30-something aspiring politicians - Khairy Jamaluddin, 32, and Badrul Hisham Shaharin, 30.

Khairy, who is Umno Youth deputy chief and son-in-law of Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, will be pitted against Badrul Hisham, a former teacher and PKR's youngest supreme council member.

Khairy is among 12 Umno new faces to be fielded by the ruling Negri Sembilan BN for the March 8 general elections.

He will replace incumbent Firdaus Haron.

Four state executive councillors have been dropped from the BN line-up, including Norhayati Omar.

Also dropped is Puteri Umno assistant secretary Bibi Sherliza Mohd Khalid, who will not be defending her state seat of Paroi.

Those who have been retained to defend their parliament seats include Dr Rais Yatim (Jelebu) and S Sothinathan (Teluk Kemang).

KOTA BAHARU, Feb 21 (Bernama) -- Umno leaders in Kelantan should not sulk if they have been dropped as candidates for the March 8 general election, Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin said today.

Instead, he said, they should soldier on to help the Barisan Nasional (BN) recapture the state from PAS.

"There is a tendency for some people to sulk when they are not nominated and this is when the "chah keting" (a Kelantanese phrase which means killing the political career of another person, usually from the same party) happens.

"This has happened in Kelantan before and if it happens again, it will render our efforts to wrest Kelantan difficult," he told reporters after opening the Kota Baharu Umno Youth operations room.

On Umno candidates in Kelantan, Khairy, who is tipped to contest in the Rembau parliamentary seat, said some Umno Youth members were in the list.

He thanked State Umno liaison chief Datuk Seri Annuar Musa for his confidence in the movement.

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 19 (Bernama) -- Voters, especially the younger generation, should continue to give their mandate to the Barisan Nasional (BN) to ensure that their future and well-being are looked after.

BN Youth deputy chairman Khairy Jamaluddin said only the BN could fulfil the promises made while the opposition parties would not be able to make good their promises.

He said the opposition's plan to turn the country into a welfare state would raise the deficit in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to 12 per cent and burden the people as it would increase the country's debts.

"I hope the youths will look at what each party has to offer. It must make realistic promises. If you look at PKR (Parti Keadilan Rakyat), it makes only empty promises," Khairy, who is also Umno Youth deputy chief, told reporters after launching the Lembah Pantai BN election machinery here tonight.

He was commenting on the perceived change of mood among the younger generation following the street demonstrations.

Asked on the feelings of the Indian community towards BN, Khairy said he was confident that it would continue to support BN after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had given his assurance that the government would give serious attention to their problems and requests.

"In BN, we have no denial syndrome. Actually, the Indian community still needs our assistance and support," he said.

On the possibility of PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's daughter, Nurul Izzah challenging Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil in Lembah Pantai, Khairy said it would not pose a problem to Shahrizat as she was a credible leader.

Khairy Suggests Winding Up CTOS

REMBAU, July 14 (Bernama) -- Deputy Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said today he hoped that the government would just wind up Credit Tip-Off Service Sdn Bhd (CTOS).

He said the government should find a solution through Bank Negara because the service of selling credit data could be exploited by the private sector in the name of profit.

"Otherwise, many people will be victimised, especially Malays who may have settled their debts but get penalised by the information provided by CTOS," he told reporters after the opening of the Rembau Umno Youth delegates meeting here.

The meeting was opened by Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, who is also the state Umno liaison chief.

Khairy said he noticed that most of the people on the CTOS blacklist were Malays.

He also said that CTOS had abused all procedures and regulations and hoped that the system could be amended to ensure transparency and fairness.

The service of selling information, like what CTOS does, should be carried out by the government, he said.

Umno members lodge report against Tian Chua

(The Sun) A group of Umno Youth members, led by its deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin, lodged a report with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) today against Parti Keadilan Rakyat information chief Tian Chua.

They called on the commission to investigate immediately the doctored photo Chua posted on his web log in relation to the murder case of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu.

"It is important for us to lodge this report because of the nature of the photo. We feel that it is an unacceptable act and an abuse of the freedom that we have in this country.

"We hope MCMC will take the appropriate measures to investigate the matter as soon as possible," he said after a meeting with MCMC chairman Datuk Dr Halim Shafie and three of its senior officials.

On July 2, Chua posted the photo which made it look like Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak, Altantuya and Abdul Razak Abdullah Baginda, one of the accused in the case, were seated at the same restaurant table.

On Thursday (July 5), Chua told reporters he will not retract the photo or apologise for it despite numerous calls for him to do so because the photo was meant to be a tongue-in-cheek response to the circumstances surrounding the testimony of one of the witnesses in the trial.

Khairy said the Umno Youth members were made to understand that MCMC would commence investigation on the matter following the report.

He added that the full content of the report will be posted on Umno Youth's website.

Consider New Faces For Polls - Khairy Says

(BERNAMA) The younger generation should be given a chance to contest in the next general election, UMNO Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin said.

"In line with our effort to introduce more new faces, I hope that these people would be considered as possible candidates. But it's up to the party leadership to choose the candidates," he told reporters after the opening of Rasah UMNO Youth and Wanita division delegates conferences here Sunday night.

Khairy was hopeful that the trend of fielding new faces, like what was seen in the 2004 polls, would continue.

He said this was necessary because in politics, continuous efforts were needed to rejuvenate the party and government.

"New faces can come not only from Umno Youth but also Wanita and Puteri Umno. And they can also include those who're already around and prepared (to shoulder greater responsibility)," he said.

Umno Youth told to safeguard Razak's legacy

(BERNAMA) All members of Umno Youth were on Saturday asked to safeguard the power-sharing concept of the Barisan Nasional (BN), a legacy of Malaysia's second Prime Minister, the late Tun Abdul Razak Hussein.

Umno Youth Deputy Chief Khairy Jamaluddin, in summing up the Seminar of the Legacy of Tun Abdul Razak here, said the power-sharing concept had forged unity of the country's leadership of the past up to the present.

It was one aspect of Tun Razak's legacy that has been maintained, he added.

Tun Razak had formed the BN in 1973 to overcome the shortcomings of the Alliance formula in the 1969 general election that led to the racial riots of May 13 of that year.

In the 1974 general election, Tun Razak as the Prime Minister led the BN to a massive victory, taking 135 of the 154 seats contested. PAS was also a component party of the BN then.

Umno Youth Secretary Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan, in summing up the legacy of Tun Razak in government and society, said the power-sharing concept had stabilised the country and led to the formulation of the New Economic Policy (NEP) and the Rukun Negara.

The NEP, which was introduced in 1970, was Tun Razak's biggest contribution to the nation in restructuring society and distributing wealth to Bumiputeras and non-Bumiputeras as well as eradicating poverty.

The two-day seminar, organised by the Akademi Pemuda chaired by Khairy and the Tun Razak Foundation Alumni Association, resolved that the spirit of the NEP should continue to be instilled in the people to ensure national prosperity.

It resolved that the establishment of government agencies, among them the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) and Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara), was also a major contribution of Tun Razak towards restructuring of the socio-economic position of the people.
