Extract HTML content using regular expression (regex) involving multiple line of data cannot be done without additional PRCE pattern modifier sU. The dot-asterisk (.*) alone will not allow PHP regex function to perform accordingly as the dot repesents all characters except newline. Bummer.

The correct way will be as follow:

preg_match('/(.*)/sU', $content, $match);

DOMXPath is a very simple and good way of traversing HTML and search for a particular node. Playing around with its query function provide straight forward method in retrieving each node’s name and value.

$domdoc = new DOMDocument();
$domdoc->loadHTML($html);
$xpath = new DOMXPath($domdoc);

$elements = $xpath->query("//div[@class='section']");
foreach($elements as $element) {
  $element->item(1)->nodeName;
  $element->item(1)->nodeValue;
}

The method above will enable us to extract names and values for each node (element).

If you wish to extract all names and values with its html tags, the natural understanding by PHP manual would be:

$newDOM = new DOMDocument();
$newNode = $element->item(1);
$newDOM->appendChild($newNode);

In theory this should work, as $element->item(1) returns DOMNode, while $newDOM->appendChild() accepts DOMNode.

In practice, you will get error. The correct way will be as follow:

$newDOM = new DOMDocument();
$newNode = $newDOM->importNode($element->item(1), true);
$newDOM->appendChild($newNode);

By setting true in the second parameter of $newDOM->importNode(), all belonging child nodes will be copied along with the papa node.

Lastly, output the scrapped HTML in string by using $newDOM->saveHTML().

echo $newDOM->saveHTML()

It’s been some time I can’t figure out why my home server cannot be accessed locally but working externally.

Part of the need to ssh locally is because my home server is running on an old faithful IBM X40 with a malfunctioned screen.

Every attempt to ssh locally is futile as terminal will display “SSH: connect to host 192.168.x.x port 22: Operation timed out”.

At first I thought it is caused by misconfigured iptables, but google gives no much hint in resolving. On second thought, I thought newer Ubuntu come with some funny configurations to prevent communication between local computers. Oh well, I come close.

Solution, I found out that my router has enabled a feature known as “user isolation”. It blocks all connections among local computers :)
