Yay! Sunshine, heat and the fast approaching Prague Fringe Festival with countless hours of thrilling, whacky and thought provoking theatre, music, puppetry and dance from around the globe! Last year the kid-themed shows had a fantastic response so festival organisers have expanded the family-friendly line up with acts to satisfy toddlers, school age kids, teenagers and adults.
Also, for the first time ever on Saturday 27 May from 15:00-16:00, Prague Fringe in partnership with Kids in Prague & Prague Youth Theatre will host a FREE Family Fringe Showcase at La Loca, Mosaic House. Comedic duo Zac & Viggo will host and introduce the performers staging the children’s shows. So bring your family and enjoy a taster showcase of bubbles, puppets, clowns, and more! Following the showcase two of these family-friendly acts will start their first performances in Mala Strana so it’s possible to follow the showcase with one or two full acts same day.

We were invited to a birthday party at Imaginatorium, where your kids disappear somewhere behind a wall, get locked in a room and have to use the elements of the room to solve a series of puzzles and escape within a set time limit. Meanwhile us parents enjoyed coffee, wine and a chat. I love this idea!

For the more adventurous families, a very good day out, or weekend break if you prefer, is a trip to the Prachovské Skály, (Prachov Rocks), about 10 km northwest from Jicin - One of the most popular sandstone rock ‘towns’ in the Bohemian Paradise, the area is a hevily-segmented plateau created of sandstone sediments during the Mezozoic Era. The original plateau was fractured by volcanic activity sometime during the Cretaceous Preiod. Subseuent wind and water erosion has sculted the rocks into the formations that visitors see today.

If you’re looking for a little bit of summer heat on a cold rainy day, you might try a trip to Tropical Islands to warm your bones. Located 60km south of Berlin, it took us about 2.5 hours to drive from Prague, an easy journey, mostly on motorways. As you turn off the A113, the truly impressive building looms into view. Formerly a Zeppelin factory, the building is simply huge, and as soon as you see it, you realise how they manage to fit a whole holiday resort inside!

We have a huge and expanding list of after school activities in English, interestingly, many of these are parent-run groups wanting to share their passion for a particular hobby or pursuit. A wide range of courses are on offer covering artistic, sporting and academic classes for school aged children down to toddler and baby classes. Some have started, most are about to. Either way, if you’re interested, now is the time to get in touch with the organisers.
