Man Of Steel may have hit the biggest box office of Irish cinema last weekend, but reviews coming in from it are still pretty mixed. Could it be topped by Brad Pitt’s World War Z which opens this week? Here’s a look at what’s coming up in the cinema this week. If you missed After Earth last week, well, it’s gone, so you’ll have to look elsewhere for it. New to the cinema this week include World War Z, Snitch and Despicable Me 2. Take a look at the trailers below for more.

World War Z

United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments, and threatening to destroy humanity itself.

Snitch

A father (Dwayne Johnson / The Rock) goes undercover for the DEA in order to free his son who was imprisoned after being set up in drug deal.

Despicable Me 2

Gru is recruited by the Anti-Villain League to help deal with a powerful new super criminal. Starring Steve Carell, Ken Jeong, Miranda Cosgrove and more.

Man Of Steel

A young journalist is forced to confront his secret extraterrestrial heritage when Earth is invaded by members of his race. We all know the story, but we’ve just never seen it like this. Stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Kevin Costner, Russel Crowe and more, directed by Zack Snyder (he of The Watchmen and 300).

The Hangover III

This time, there’s no wedding. No bachelor party. What could go wrong, right? But when the Wolfpack hits the road, all bets are off.

Epic

A teenager finds herself transported to a deep forest setting where a battle between the forces of good and the forces of evil is taking place. She bands together with a rag-tag group characters in order to save their world — and ours.

Kids Mini Marathon This Weekend

Weather-wise, things are looking up again for the weekend which can only be a good thing as Kilkenny Castle plays host to the the annual Kids Mini Marathon and Adult 5K in aid of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin and Chernobyl Children International.

Registration is on the day from 1pm @ Kilkenny Castle Entrance Gates (Second Gates)

Kids Run of 2.5k @ 2pm followed by the Adult5K.
Entry to Kids Run €5
Entry to Adult Run €10.

An Adult 5k will take place directly after the main event also in the Castle Park ensuring the whole family can participate and have fun all while raising much needed funds for both Children’s Charities.

Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin is currently running a campaign to help ‘Fix Crumlin’ and desperately seeking to raise €8 million euro to make improvements and to buy much needed equipment.

Chernobyl Children International have a strong relationship with the Irish people with over 1000 children arriving to Ireland each year as part of the Rest and Recuperation programme run by the charity and need funds to continue their work with the people affected by the Chernobyl Disaster.

Wishbone Gallery Launching In Kilkenny

In good news for the local arts scene, the City’s newest arts space launches this coming Friday evening.

Located over Ristorante Rinuccini, the Wishbone Gallery is a new gallery and retail space for artists, designers and craftworkers.

Among the activities for the launch this Friday include makeovers from Eyerbrushed Makeup Academy and a cookery demo with Masterchef finalist Claire Ann O’Keeffe. Hats, jewellery and loads more will be on display with the proceedings kicking off at 5pm.

Also stirring this week is the opening of Laura Angell’s Stuart Strokes Otters exhibition at the Upstairs Gallery in the Watergate Theatre. That show launches at 7pm today (Wednesday) followed by the Town Arts Social in Brewery Corner from 8.30pm with a free comedy show on offer.

Kilkenny Gospel Festival Choir A Few Weeks Away

The second International Kilkenny Gospel Choir Festival is set to get underway on 14 June.

This year’s festival brings with it three main events and will run all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday this year. Friday features a number of workshops includng a special schools event, Having Fun With Gospel Music. With other workshops taking place across the weekend, an outdoor concert will be held on the Parade on the Saturday evening before the closing gala concert on the Sunday night.

The festival weekend is the first of three big dates.

In July, the Mississippi Gospel Choir arrive in Kilkenny on the 27th, performing at midday mass in St. Mary’s Cathedral on the 28th.

Then in August, Dr. Eddie Jones returns to Kilkenny with the Alabama University Gospel Choir for a weekend of music, workshops and more including a Sunday concert in St. Mary’s Cathedral.

The three weekends combine for what organisers are called a ‘Summer Of Inspirational Gospel Music’.

Spark Productions Heating Up Brownbread

Young Graiguenamanagh theatre company (young as in years) Spark Productions are bringing their own brand of theatre to the City for the first time when they present Roddy Doyle’s 1987 classic, Brownbread, at the Watergate Theatre on 20 June. Tickets are already available from the Watergate Theatre priced €10.

The show performed at the Abey Hall in Graiguenamanagh in December last to packed houses and with the group looking to start forging new audiences for their work, they arrive for one night only in Kilkenny before taking to St. Michael’s Theatre in New Ross. While it’s the first performance for the group in the City, Brownbread builds on two great original productions, One For The Road and Bittersweet Graffiti, both staged in Graiguenamanagh over the past two years.

IDEATE Bound For Kilkenny This July

A new multi-disciplinary mini-festival exploring and celebrating craft, design and creativity through experimentation and collaboration is set for Kilkenny on Friday 5 & Saturday 6 July. Presented by the Crafts Council of Ireland and the National Craft Gallery, Kilkenny, this is a Gathering 2013 event and marks the 50th Anniversary of the establishment of Kilkenny Design Workshops.

As part of the Crafts Council of Ireland’s 2013 programme exploring the legacy of Kilkenny Design Workshops in the 21st Century, IDEATE will examine the future potential for craft, design and the creative process through shared practice, new technologies and a fusion of music, making, talks and experimentation.

The two-day IDEATE festival will take place alongside Design Intelligence which runs at the National Craft Gallery from May 24 – July 9, incorporating two exhibitions, Living With Design and Making Things Better.

IDEATE Festival highlights include:

Pallet to Product – a design challenge to create contemporary products from discarded pallets.
Making Worlds – talks around the role of craft/design/creativity in building the world around us. Speakers include Ali Grehan, Dublin City Architect and Davie Philip of Cultivate.
Making Things – our relationships with objects and why they are important with Psychologist Margot Wasz; Lecturer & designer Bryan Leech; designer & maker Ben Harris.
Artist Mick Minogue vs. Cartoon Saloon in a feisty drawing competition.
Talk with Garret Pickett of Indigo and Cloth, David Smith of Atelier and artist Gareth Kennedy about their design process.
Drop-in crochet workshops – as part of the Three Bags Full projects led by artist Deirdre Harte.
The Future in 3D – exploring the enormous impact of 3D printing on everything from buildings to food, with TOG FabLab and furniture maker Stephen O’Briain.
Talk by Anna O’Sullivan 2014 Venice Biennale curator & Butler Gallery Director.
Pop-Up Dinner of street food & craft beer at National Craft Gallery.
Pop-up Fennellys – artist and curator Etaoin Holahan brings the eclectic brilliance that is Fennelly’s Bar to Kilkenny city for one night only.

Design Intelligence Opens at National Craft Gallery

Design Intelligence is the latest show to open at the National Craft Gallery in the Castle Yard, Kilkenny, bringing with it a double bill of exhibitions – Living With Design and Making Things Better. The exhibition officially opens on Friday evening and runs right up to 9 July. Keep an eye on the arts listings for details of more events happening around Design Intelligence.

Living With Design

The Malthouse Design Centre invites you to share in the story of everyday objects as seen through the eyes of a selection of Ireland’s design professionals in Living with Design.

Imagining and designing for the future, designers give shape to something that did not exist before. Every designer aspires to be a step closer to a better world leading to a happier, more beautiful and intelligent existence. For Living with Design, renowned Irish design professional have been invited to present beautifully designed objects that hold a personal value or sentiment, they are objects that are familiar as well as unexpected, and objects that have revolutionized daily lives or a particular way of thinking. Each object has an individual story as told by the designer, the enhancement of their daily lives as a result is evidenced by the visible wear and tear of the object.

Through the Living with Design exhibition, The Malthouse Design Centre would like to introduce the wider public to the value of design and how by choosing beautiful design it can benefit and enhance our lives. The designers have been photographed by Lois Crighton with these objects. According to Rosemary Ryan, Business Development Manager for the Malthouse, Living with Design is a snapshot in time of the lives of Irish designers, their sources of inspiration and the objects that can engage and intrigue us. The objects which the designers have chosen range from an Eileen Gray table, a simple but different Danish spoon, a Blá Eld - Blue Fire Swedish ceramic tea set to a contemporary designed lamp stand and carved wood serving platter by Holly Tornheim. Each item unique and special with a story to tell.

Making Things Better

Design is always about making things better – even when the starting point is standing on the shoulders of giants. In partnership with the Royal Irish Academy, the National Craft Gallery asked Designgoat and Derek Wilson to each select an inspirational object from A History of Ireland in 100 Objects and lead us through their design processes from initial selection, via trials, errors and sketches, to a finished prototype that speaks as eloquently about contemporary Ireland as the 100 Objects do of our past.

It’s all well and good being able to tell you what’s on and where it’s on, but what happens when you get to Kilkenny? Where can you go to grab a bite before a gig? Where do you lay your head down for the night? And where could you find the best bag of chips in the city?

As an addon to the site, we’re currently prepping three new guides to attach to the site which should help visitors (and locals) to the Marble City find their way to a great plate of food, a great night’s sleep and the perfect pint. The three guides are, essentially,

Counting Down To The Cat Laughs

The countdown is on to the 2013 Sky Cat Laughs Comedy Festival which tears through Kilkenny, splitting many a side along the way, from Thursday 30 May to Monday 3 June.

This year’s lineup includes shows from Dylan Moran, Judah Friedlander, Mike Wilmot, Sanderson Jones, Abandoman, Aidan Bishop and more along with festival regulars Neil Delamere, Rich Hall, Karl Spain, Fred Cooke, Dom Irrera, Colin Murphy and a host of other top comics.

With Sky on board this year there’s also an exclusive for the festival in the premiere screening of the opening of season 2 of Moone Boy, along with a Moone Boy workshop. Kitty Flicks returns with a selection of short films on show at the Watergate Theatre while a children’s strand has been added this year with Rothe House hosting a select number of events.

Bruce Springsteen For Wrecking Ball Weekender

THE RUMOURS can be put to rest. No, it’s not Fleetwood Mac, or Elton John, Radiohead, Shania Twain playing Nowlan Park this summer. It is, in fact, Bruce Springsteen who brings his European Wrecking Ball tour to a close in Kilkenny with two back-to-back performances at Nowlan Park on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 July. Tickets are on sale from Thursday 7 February in usual outlets (Rollercoaster in Kilkenny) from 9am costing €90 general admission or €100 seated.

Here’s the lowdown…

Aiken Promotions today announced details of the Wrecking Ball Weekender which will take place in Kilkenny this July. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will perform the last 2 dates of the Wrecking Ball Tour in Nowlan Park Kilkenny on 27 and 28 July 2013.

The Wrecking Ball Weekender will kick off when doors open at 12.30pm each day. On Sat 27 July the full day’s entertainment will include performances from Glen Hansard and Damien Dempsey. Sun 28 July the full day’s entertainment will include performances from Imelda May and LAPD (featuring Liam O’Flynn, Andy Irvine, Paddy Glackin & Dónal Lunny). Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will then take to the stage both evenings.

Neil Delamere Returns This Thursday

New Festivals Section Open

YOU COULD be forgiven for thinking that we have a festival every month in Kilkenny and I reckon if you dig deep enough, you could be right.

2012 was a great year for festivals locally with new festivals like the International Gospel Choir Festival and the Subtitle opening their doors for the first time.

In 2013, the Kilkenny Arts Festival turns 40, the Cat Laughs approaches 20, the Roots festival will rip up the May Bank Holiday and the Savour will see us eat out way around Kilkenny in October.

With so many festivals going on, we’ve opened a new festivals section that has the key information on each of the festivals taking place locally – separate of course to the actual festival listings.

Subtitle 2013 Festival Dates

The Subtitle Film Festival will be back this year. After the roaring success of the inaugural festival in November last, the dates for 2013 were revealed in the past week or two with this year’s festival taking place from 18-24 November.

There’s no word yet on what’s going to take place for the second year of the festival but you can be sure it will be packed with some of the best foreign films available.
