We’re back. At long bloody last. Seriously. We’re two days late with the podcast show, it’s been sitting in ProTools since Wednesday evening but thanks largely in part to

1. Forgetting it was a One Take Sessions special and subsequently forgetting to pick up the OTS tracks and
2. Starting work on The War of the Worlds with The Devious Theatre Company.

However, we still say better late than never and so two days later than usual we present the 61st Sound System Podcast. There are indeed four tracks from last week’s One Take Sessions featuring Jimi Cullen, Nick Day, Michael Whelan and Ian Doyle while there’s plenty of chatter about a multitude of things, including settling scores with Messrs Doyle and Byrne at the 2008 Moviestar.ie Irish Web Awards taking place tomorrow night (Saturday) in Dublin.

We’ll be there as we’ve found ourselves nominated in the ‘Best Music’ category (wooooo!) so myself and Ross are making the trip up for the session, pissup, awards ceremony.

We’re sorry about the delay (or I’m sorry about the delay), but we’ll have the 61st Sound System Podcast online later today.

The good thing is it was actually recorded at the usual time on Wednesday evening but between jobs and a late night in the studio last night (recording until post 3am) it hasn’t made to bounce yet. So, given the run of the day it will likely be this evening when the podcast goes live.

79Cortinaz have signed and sealed a two-year worldwide digital distribution contract with industry leaders Indie Mobile. Though already on iTunes, Napster, Rhaosidy, eMusic, Amazon, Groupie Tune and downloadusic.ie, Indie Mobile will literally bring the band a global audience. In fact it’s hard to think of a country or mobile network 79Cortinaz won’t be available on; Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Central and South America, Chile, China, Columbia, Czech Republic, Denmark - all the way through the alphabet right down to the UK, Uruguay, the US and Venezula. Belize is my bet for their first #1!

Outlets vary from mobile operators like Meteor, Orange, Vodafone, Sprint Nextel, Movistar, T-Mobile and O2 (amongst others) to retail outlets like Woolworths, The Sun, Tecos, MTV and NME Realtones and branded portals like Motorola Europe, Ministry of Sound, UK Street sounds and Bandwagon.
It’s not just downloads either - other formats include ring tones, real tones, videotones, video clips, streaming video, voicemail messaqes MMS greetings and Mobile Personalisation Products.

When asked, bassist Cormac Strain would only say “delighted - this is the way forward” whilst vocalist Gala Hutton chipped in “people should definitely go buy themselves some Hopioki now - it couldn’t be easier” - in reference to the band’s acclaimed debut album.

To take advantage of the contract, the band have set up their own label, Goggy Records. Named after 79Cortinaz guitarist Fergal Barry who tragically passed away in late 2005, the label’s first release will be Love Sewn Up in February 2009. Keep your eyes out for the full length animated video, hand drawn by Gala and animated by Cormac as it’ll probably find its way onto the web before the end of the year…

79Cortinaz also play Kilkenny this weekend with Burma Shade, Lights Over Phoenix and James Guillmartin.

We’re sorry to announce that Rich Wyman (US) has had to postpone his scheduled appearance for the One Take Sessions this coming October 23rd, and ultimately change his plans Irish tour (where free shows are on the cards).

Following a stellar performance earlier this year, Rich had included a stop at the One Take Sessions on his Irish fall tour amongst dates in Dublin, Wexford, Tipperary, Cork, Mullingar and more. Given the current economic climate (the reason behind the tour change) it will be interesting to see if any other overseas acts change their plans in coming to Ireland.

The Devious Theatre Company have announced that in conjunction with KCLR 96FM they will be broadcasting a brand new hour long radio version of HG Wells’ sci-fi classic The War Of The Worlds, 70 years to the date of the famous Orson Welles broadcast on C.B.S. on October 30th 1938.

The Welles version was performed live on CBS with a fictional radio show being interrupted by news of a Martian invasion of earth. Convinced that what they were hearing was real, listeners fled their homes, frantically called loved ones and prepared themselves for the Martian attacks. The countrywide case of mass hysteria caused by the broadcast gave a chilling insight into how America would react if subjected to such an attack. A subsequent Mexican version of Welles radio adaptation led to 6 deaths and caused the radio station to be burnt down by outraged listeners.

Tune in on October 30th to hear our Kilkenny and Carlow located version of the classic tale. With a variety of different narrative devices and accounts of the invasion, we are able to piece together a chilling perspective on the attacks by the fearsome Martian tripods and their destruction of earth’s populace over the course of a 3 week period.

We are delighted to be working on this project with KCLR 96FM and we’re hoping that the audiences in Carlow and Kilkenny won’t take this one too seriously.

The cast for The War Of The Worlds is Ross Costigan, Amy Dunne, Ken McGuire, Kevin Mooney, John Morton, Maria Murray, David Thompson and Paul Young all of whom will be familiar to ‘Devious audiences following performances of Trainspotting and Smitten in Kilkenny earlier this summer.
