As a beginner, you don’t want to experiment with mixing different types of wax just yet. If you wish to color your candles buy solid wax dye. For the fragrance you can use chips or oils. For equipment you will need a double-broiler to melt the wax in, a candy thermometer, and candle molds to pour it in. You can purchase molds or get creative. Any open topped, heat proof glass jar can be used for jar candles, but these must be preheated. You can use candy molds for tiny shaped candles.

If the wick sinks in the wax, it’s alright – just straighten it up when the wax is partially set. Let your candle cool completely – preferably overnight. That basically means that for each one pound of wax, you can use 1.12 oz. of fragrance oil. If the fragrance concentration is too high, it may bleed thru the candle.

Another difference between soy waxes and other waxes is soy wax is softer so it is not OK for some kinds of candles.

You wouldn't need to make pillar candles unless you use an addition to make the soy wax a little harder. Soy wax isn’t commended for taper candles either.

But if you're after a less expensive alternative that can produce some great results, as well as being environmentally friendly, then use soy wax for your candle making.

After the invention of the Kerosene fuelled lamp and the light bulb in 1879 the utilisation of candles started to decline.
