Japanese studio UID Architects often place gardens inside buildings and this house in Fukuyama is no exception (+ slideshow).

The two-storey family house is nestled amongst an assortment of high-rise buildings, which “shut out the sunlight” according to architect Keisuke Maeda.

Instead of adding windows to the facade, Maeda specified a series of skylights and clerestory windows to bring daylight in from above to the living room, kitchen and children’s room on the top floor.

The indoor garden occupies a double-height space at the centre of the residence and also acts as a lightwell for the entrance lobby at the front of the ground floor.

A grid of bookshelves provides a balustrade around the edge of the courtyard, which is also the location of a wooden staircase connecting the two floors.

Maeda explains how a traditional Japanese townhouse occupied the site previously and also had a garden at its centre, which he believes creates a connection between “past and present”.

This is a reconstruction of a house in the centre of the city. The site has 5 meters for lateral directions, and 18 meters for longitudinal one.

This is a north‐south site formed like machiya. The family is consisted of two children and their parents.

The feature of this site is surrounded by buildings on east and west side, and faced on the south road; there is a 30-meter-high car park building. This shuts out the sunlight.

Since the site has many conditions, we thought that it would be comfortable space that we can feel basic elements such as sunlight and wind, and that we succeed to a form which nagaya have had.

As regards to the plan, we put every rooms along with the inner garden that contains the element coat house has.

Thanks to the shape of the section like 凸, every room that run from north to south can get homogeneous sunlight and wind.

The element of the exterior of a building from inner garden make a room give space like exterior, and depth, so we can feel a vague condition.

The programs of Europa City are organized along an internal boulevard with
a mix of retail, entertainment and cultural programs on both sides. The
boulevard forms a continuous loop traveling through six different areas
themed as the various regions of Europe. The central boulevard becomes the

the boulevard, public bicycles and electric public transport bring visitors

korean firm mass studies has designed the 'daum headquarters' for an international IT company based in the jeju province, an island off the southern coast of korea. the company positioned themselves on an autonomous island away from metropolitan areas, to oppose their competitors with an awareness of korea's population growth and densities representing it as the most urbanized country in the world. the development diversifies the island's mainly touristic industry to contribute a technology-focused one. similar to silicon valley, the proposal creates a creative work community within a utopian setting. part of a 1,095,900 square meter masterplan situated near jeju university, the 300 meter wide and 800 meter long plot will be linearly constructed over time in an organic manner. the area is planned to divide rural and urban as well as formal and informal zones.

the urban zone will host a superstructure measuring 70 meter wide by 800 meter long will support efficient working spaces, farming and sports sections. the large building is humanized with 8.4 meter by 8.4 meter structural modules with variations of extruded or curved elements. generated 12.6 meter long spans and 6.3 meter cantilevers make intimate working environments and shelter outdoor spaces. segments of the five-storey high exterior adjust to the uniformly sloping terrain's gradual 60 meter change across its length, ensuring connections through the interior.

Fascinating Modern Cube House Design By Vértice Arquitectos

This house was designed in the first row, plot 5 in Lomas del Mar beach in Cerro Azul, 120Km. south of Lima. The plot is a rocky and sandy hill in a half curved shape that reaches 48 meters high above the sea level and drops steeply 8 meters in its lowest part. It has a 180° view to the Pacific Ocean to the south, and a panoramic view of the beach to the east and to the north.

The two main goals to develop the project were to fully exploit the best possible view to the ocean from the social area, as well as from the master bedroom, and to make the most of the plot of land. Two parallel volumes were designed, to accomplish the first objective, one of which leans on the other, which is 1.20 meters higher, to have the view of the sea. The volumes are joined by a main circulation axis which ends in a swimming pool overlooking the beach.

To make the most of the plot big cantilevers were designed, since the useful area of the plot was reducing while the project was reaching the highest level. The first volume is found to the left of the entrance of the house, where most of the bedrooms have been located. The master room and the adjoining terrace are revolved 45° as to have the view of the sea. The second volume, to the right, locates the social and service areas in the first level. A family room and a guest room are located in the second level.

A two-story living and dining room area ends in the swimming pool and in a terrace perpendicular to it. The family room, in the second level, is spatially opened to the living and dining room in the first level, and has also an open view to the ocean. The staircase to the second level is made in natural concrete and flies over the kitchen separating this area from the living and dining room.

The materials used in the project have been: exposed concrete, white painting in the walls, stainless steel, tempered glass and granite stone. The latter has been used to cover the base on which the volumes rest, with the intention of separating these from the natural terrain. The pool is closed by a double face laminated glass in the external face that permits the same transparency to a view of the sea as the rest of the house.

Nature, above all else, was Wright’s most inspirational force. He advised students to “study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you.” He did not suggest copying nature, but instead allowing it to be an inspiration.

Wright’s love and appreciation of nature began early in his life while working summers on his uncle’s farm. The rigorous routine, home-grown food, milking cows, putting up fences—all made a strong impression. In addition to the exhilaration of honest outdoor work, he was also learning to sense the deep mysteries of nature.

Wright often brought aspects of nature into his buildings with his use of natural light, plants, and water. At the Guggenheim Museum, it is thought that a nautilus shell inspired the spiral ramp and that the radial symmetry of a spider web informed the design of the rotunda skylight.

Eric Lloyd Wright, Frank Lloyd Wright’s grandson, was one of his grandfather’s apprentices during the 1940s and 50s, when the Guggenheim Museum was designed. He recalls, “…every Sunday at breakfast he'd give us a talk… And sometimes he would have placed before him a whole bunch of seashells. And he said, "Look here, fellows. This is what nature produces. These shells all are based on the same basic principles, but all of them are different, and they're all created as a function of the interior use of that shell" (Frank Lloyd Wright: From Within Outward Audioguide [New York: Antenna Audio, Inc. and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, 2009]).

However, Wright believed that nature’s secrets could only be discovered by diligent contemplation. Reality and truth were not to be found on the surface of things, but required extensive probing and thought to yield valuable lessons (Robert C. Twombly, Frank Lloyd Wright, An Interpretive Biography [New York: Harper & Row, 1973], p. 86).

Project Description from the Architects: An open city for art. Partaking in a 2011 international competition for a new national museum in Beijing, MAD architects' proposal is a city-sized museum where the public space is the greatest good.

Since China began opening up to the world in the late 1970’s, China's contemporary creative scene has been expanding to the stage of global confidence with added investment in its artists. Built in 1962, the National Art Museum of China, already having one of the largest collections in the country, has been the backdrop to some of the most influential exhibitions in contemporary Chinese history. With the planned move into a new building, the organizing committee followed a global trend: bigger, located in a designated 'art district’ and more iconic.

Situated on the central axis of the 2008 Olympic site, and part of a six mega volume masterplan, the main question became, how to design something iconic on an unrealistic and inhuman city scale.The proposal by MAD architects for the new museum is a hybrid between an elevated public square and a floating mega building above.

Organized as an open city in three layers, the result is a sequence of outdoor and indoor spaces. In these spaces, nature and function are not separated but intertwined. This creates an architecture that achieves an understanding about one’s bodily presence among the objects that surround him, instead to a functional agglomeration of pre-defined uses.

MAD architects' proposal shows how a building can bring the city and art together, creating a urban public space where people can consider their relationship between time, point of view and each other.

New United Arab Emirates Parliament Building Complex By Ehrlich Architects

Los Angeles-based Ehrlich Architects have been awarded the grand prize in the international architectural competition to design the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.) Federal National Council’s (FNC) New Parliament Building Complex.

Fourteen firms representing nine countries had been invited in early 2010 to submit entries in Phase 1 of the competition for the new FNC building. A short list of four finalists was selected to continue to the more detailed Phase 2: Ehrlich Architects (USA), Foster + Partners (UK), Massimiliano Fuksas Architects (Italy), and Zaha Hadid Architects (UK).

Ehrlich Architects (who teamed in Phase 2 with U.A.E.-based architecture firm Godwin Austen Johnson [GAJ] and landscape architecture firm ValleyCrest Design Group) created a scheme for the FNC’s New Parliament which embodies the unique identity of the United Arab Emirates: a modern society moving boldly into the future while retaining a strong connection to its history and traditions.

“The New Parliament Building Complex will balance Islamic Heritage with U.A.E.’s global contemporary aspirations, where modernity and tradition are in harmonious balance,” explains Ehrlich Architects’ Design Principal, Steven Ehrlich, FAIA, RIBA. “The architecture for the FNC’s new home will communicate its increasingly vital role in the lives of all United Arab Emirates citizens.”

The winning entry for the new Parliament building melds familiar Arabic design language with contemporary form and the latest technological advances, creating meaning, maximum functionality and environmental sustainability. The design is anchored by a striking 100-meter-diameter dome structure, a soaring “flower-of-the-desert” which will create a shaded micro-environment while casting Islamic patterns of dappled light onto the white marble Assembly Hall.

The flanking Parliamentary buildings that house the majority of the offices, meeting halls, and visitors’ program, abstract the colors and textures of desert sand; the exterior expression of these structures is indebted to local historic buildings. In total, the complex will be a proud landmark for public gatherings as well as a model for conservation of the region’s precious resources.

The site of the new Parliament conveys its significance as a public institution. It is located on Abu Dhabi Corniche, one of the grand processional boulevards in the country’s capital, where important civic events and celebrations take place. Facing the Arabian Gulf, the body of water shared by six of the seven Emirates, the new FNC complex will establish a governmental face at the seafront. Its dome will be visible for miles across the water and will glow dramatically at night.

The two main aims in the design for theUrban Library of the Future and Centre for New Media in Gent are to create a dynamic, flexible and open knowledge environment, whilst simultaneously strengthening the character of the location with the introduction of a building with a distinct architectural identity.

Sustainability is the guiding factor in the design, based on the conviction that not only must the environmental and user-friendly design of the Urban Library of the Future be able to evolve along with new media, but it must also offer the possibility for future change of use. Withan open landscape, spaciousness, extensive views, alternative circulation routes, several meeting areas and a public plaza, the design for the library affords a renewal of its urban context.

The building is both fluid in form and accommodating to its surroundings. This is evidenced by its appearance - which varies according to the orientation - as well as from the decision to lift the building volume above ground level, thereby creating light, transparency and expansive sightlines. However the layered structure and low construction volume ensure that the impact of the design on the urban profile is minimal and that views to the characteristic towers of Gent are preserved. The structure also makes it possible to introduce (green) roof terraces whilst also ensuring low levels of direct sunlight penetration.

Based on the functional organisation the volume is lifted in order to create public space around the Library. In conjunction with the promenade along the quays, this results in interaction with the surrounding water and thereby the revival of the Waalse Krook.

The internal organisation of the building is based on an open central void, around which the circulation takes place. This internal void enhances the spatial experience and creates clear orientation through the building.

In addition to providing an extension of the urban context and the junction of the circulation routes, the internal void also functions as a link between the various functional clusters in the design. The void fulfills a bridging function between the city and the Municipal Library, and as such acts as a metaphor for public perception.

A long list of winners of the 2010 GOOD DESIGN Award was recently announced by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design together with The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies. Founded in Chicago in 1950 by architects Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames, and Edgar Kaufmann, Jr., GOOD DESIGN bestows international recognition upon the world's most prominent designers and manufacturers for advancing new, visionary, and innovative product concepts, invention and originality, and for stretching the envelope beyond what is considered ordinary product and consumer design.

A total of over 500 Awards were given in late December of 2010 by a New York jury, representing the work of thousands of designers and manufacturers in fields like Electronics, Medical, Robotics/Bionics, Textiles, Transportation, all the way to Children's Products, Tools, and Graphics/Identity/Packaging.

Nestled in a cascading, west-facing ravine with a dramatic slab of rock defining the northern edge and a stunning outlook over the azure blue of the Andaman Sea to the south, Original Vision's commission; to do this demanding but ultimately spectacular site justice, was both daunting and exciting.

The defining elements are the rock and the view. They dominate at every juncture. They resonate on first approach, through the migration from public to private space, in the living and in the family areas, in the gardens, in the bedrooms; and they continue to command respect down the tropical jungle steps that arrive at a secluded rock platform, flanked by the same seam that welcomed you 60m above. Constant reference to these elements instills a feeling of solidity that contrasts with the openness of the house, reinforcing the dynamism and vibrancy that pays homage to the magic of the location.

The home grows out from the rock; the bedroom element rests between it and the wing that strikes the perpendicular, rising vertically from the slope. This composition defines the open living and dining space that is simply a transition between two garden areas. It is intimate but open and the uninterrupted clear span creates a bridge under which the conventions defining indoor space disappear.

Cantilevered over a massage sala, the swimming pool completes the composition. It is the focal point that draws the eye to the view and instills a calmness that provides balance with the energy of the architecture.

The Conga Room is a new Latin club designed by Belzberg Architects in LA. Description by architects, "The Conga Room, in its new location at LA LIVE in downtown Los Angeles across from the Staples Center, is the city's premier Latin nightclub. The space will feature today's hottest Latin performers in its 14,000 square feet live venue space, which includes a restaurant, three distinct bars, patio seating and a VIP lounge and private room. In addition, the club will host LA TV and world-renowned DJs adjacent to the stage and above the crowd, adding even more excitement to the ambiance. Perhaps the club design's greatest intent is to be the energy of the Latin community, to play homage to its roots and deep history while infusing it with Los Angeles' fervent modern lifestyle."

In an effort to meet the clients aesthetic desires for a ceiling that reflected the vibrancy and dynamism of the Latin culture, a pattern was developed made of diamonds from the rumba dance step. The ceiling also boasts a state of the art LED lighting system, which required lighting analysis and optimization, using various building performance software. Patrons ascend the staircase wrapped around this glowing spectacle. Its pattern morphs into the pedals and flowers, and responds to the varying conditions of program and space.

More than just a boutique located on the fifth floor of a building, this unique setting has much to do with the inspiration and central thrust of its design. This ingenious and sparkling glass box of retail is situated on the fifth-floor edge of a parking garage, yet somehow conquers impossible challenges: integrating the shop into the aesthetic of the parking structure and establishing connection and dialogue with the pedestrian environment below.

What makes this project such a tremendous success is its ability to captivate both the store patrons and those meandering the streets of Miami Beach. It achieves this effect through a variety of tactics. First, the enclosure’s composition of twenty-two foot high Starphire Glass allows for expansive, crystal clear views into the space, allowing the play of light both inwardly and outwardly. Second, such haunting transparency gives the project the appearance of being perched calmly, like a radiant cloud or jewel box above the city. The choice of such light and unobtrusive materials also provides a peaceful, fitting relationship between the shop and the larger parking structure.

In addition to this transparent glass, reflectivity comes into play to draw a connection to the outside world. A complex system of mirrored walls and ceilings not only allows a glimpse of the boutique to onlookers below, but subtly captures the street goings-on in reflective views for the patrons. Such dialogue achieves a connection more attune to a street-level shopping experience than what one would expect from a fifth-floor retail operation. Finally, the reflective ceiling provokes even more intrigue through interactive mirrors, operated on sensors which ripple in sync with the occupants' actions within the shop. The ceiling morphs and "mimics" the motion of the patrons, stopping its motion when they stop. Such interaction furthers the boutique’s absorbing performance viewed from street-level as well.

The complex kinetic mirror installation is composed of forty-four mirrors, ranging in size from 15”x 6” up to 33”x 28”. There are two adjacent bands running a length of forty-three feet along the west edge of the ceiling. The mirrors are attached to a sub-structure with individual pistons calibrated for each mirror. The pistons allow each mirror to rotate along a hinge independently and are actuated by pneumatic lines fed from a compressor connected to a computer. The movement is generated in two separate ways: by the occupant via motion sensors, or by preset animations designed for periods of time when the store is closed or holds no shoppers. Additionally, the shop’s floor layout is designed in tune with the ceiling, and mannequins or clothing racks can be maneuvered to various positions for diverse effects in this interactive commercial experience.

Wiel Arets Architects Win 1st Prize for the IJhal in Amsterdam

Dutch practice Wiel Arets Architects has been named winner in the competition for the IJhal in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The IJhal will be Amsterdam Centraal Station’s pedestrian centric area for gastronomic, retail and leisure facilities, for passengers and city residents alike.

Project Description:

Amsterdam’s Centraal Station is currently undergoing a drastic transformation to become the centrepiece of the city’s plan to reconnect neighbourhood clusters through the restructuring of its public transportation systems. The IJhal, to be located in the rear of Amsterdam’s Centraal Station, on the waterfront of the river IJ, will be the main pedestrian centric portion of the renewed station, adding gastronomic, leisure and service areas to the station’s program.

Historically, the neighbourhood of Amsterdam North has been separated from the rest of the city by the river IJ. With the opening of the IJhal at Centraal Station – and later, the North-South Metro line that will travel under the IJ and physically connect Amsterdam North with the rest of the city – this barrier will be broken down.

Currently two pedestrian halls are open inside Centraal Station, which will be replaced by five halls that run through the station, helping to easily direct users from the front entrance to their train, metro, or bus – and strengthen the connection made by the North-South Metro. This perpendicular routing to the river IJ will enable a direct visual connection to the waterfront from most areas inside the station. Within the IJhal various gastronomic outlets will be available for food on the go, while restaurants and cafes will also be incorporated to encourage prolonged station visits. All gastronomic facilities will be located on the waterfront edge of the IJhal, to encourage the utilization of the station beyond a transportation hub, and into a destination itself.

A system of round-mirrored elements composed of a stainless steel type surface will be mounted on the ceiling, mimicking the reflective properties of the IJ’s waters within the IJhal. These elements will serve to visually double the height of the space. Below the new bus terminal at the rear of the station, above the IJhal, voids will be located alongside stairs and escalators – containing hanging gardens – that will visually connect the bus terminal above with the IJhal below.

The floor of the IJhal will function as an abstracted way finding system composed of a terrazzo like finish of polished circles, which will condense and expand in accordance with pedestrian traffic patterns and when perpendicular paths occur. This subtle shift of floor pattern will help to keep pedestrians in constant motion during intersections, serving to keep the station’s halls free of unnecessary congestion.

The waterfront behind Centraal Sation is not currently developed for public functions. As the surrounding neighbourhoods on the IJ’s waterfront continue to develop, more public venues in the area are beginning to appear. The Piet Heinkade corridor, which follows the IJ to the east of Centraal Station, has been revitalized by the conversion of former warehouses into residential housing, alongside the recently completed ‘Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ’ and the adjacent port for visiting cruise ships. Multiple cafes, restaurants and hotels – as well as the renewal of the KNSM Island into a residential district in the late 1990’s – has further propelled these waterfront developments. A tram line running from Central Station, along Piet Heinkade and towards the new housing area of IJburg in the east of the city, acts as an axis to connect these districts. On the western waterfront of the IJ, the recently completed ‘Westerdoks’ have added a new residential district to the city, in turn adding more housing, cafes and shops to the city’s waterfront.

The exterior of the IJhal facing the waterfront will utilize a printed glass facade, further incorporating the transparent and reflective qualities of the IJ to the IJhal. This will ensure that a visual connection with the IJ can be maintained from within the hall at all times. Alongside the waterfront will be an outdoor area with tables and seating for the various cafes and restaurants, where travellers and citizens of the city alike will be able to relax and enjoy the city’s rediscovered waterfront. Docks alongside this outdoor area will be able to accommodate multiple functions, such as the mooring of recreational boats, or possibly play host to a floating swimming pool in the IJ; possibilities for recreational facilities are limitless.

Runner-Ups of the Los Angeles Cleantech Corridor and Green District Competition

In a previous post, we just published the First Place-winners in the Professional and Student category of the Los Angeles Cleantech Corridor and Green District Competition.

Now in this post, we also want to give the ideas and concepts from the runner-up entries some exposure.

Cleantech was an open ideas competition sponsored by SCI‐Arc and The Architect’s Newspaper that invited entrants to use the competition as a forum for provocative, even revolutionary, reconceptualizations of L.A.’s urban fabric.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa says of the competition’s implications for the City’s future: “This competition showcases both the national and international draw of SCI‐Arc, and our combined efforts to make Los Angeles the creative and innovative capital of the world. With our world class universities along with our other unparalleled resources, Los Angeles offers the perfect competitive operating environment for the clean tech sector to thrive and grow.”

"We believe that the key to a successful green corridor lies in the ability of the built environment to inspire its residents to look beyond the common, the materialistic and the easily consumed in favor of the stimulating, the daring and the whimsical. Only with this premise may we start to break our old habits and consider radically new, more environmentally conscious ways of living. The urban approach we took in designing the Cleantech Corridor was to compress the nearly four mile site by implementing a local tram way, then rezoning specific areas in order to give space back to the pedestrian. At the local scale this translates into the opportunistic retrofitting of the existing environment along with the inclusion of highly visible urban markers. At the scale of the Cleantech facility we sought to embody our commitment to keeping as much of the existing context intact while also giving the residents of the corridor a monument to the seemingly impossible."

"The urban character ot the Los Angeles industrial corridor is a paradoxical blend of functionality and disregard. Currently rnost of the cities distribution, shipping and freight storage occurs witnin this zone. However, there is no structural logic or organization to this corridor. Freight modal hubs are littered along Alameda and Olympic. Additionally, a huge residential population to the east is cut off from accessing the city by thls blanket ofabsolute, thoughtless lndustry. In part, because of the lack of organizational clarity to these transit systems, 20-30 percent of the 'industrial buildings that populate the site are outmoded buildings with no inherent flexibility or market value - currentiy shuttered, and derelict. Conversely, this is part of makes the corridor site so provocative - its raw space and potential for industry and innovation. But to function within a modern metropolis what the corridor needs is a systemic overhaul, a retrofitting to transition into an intermodal landscape."

"Two key features of this area that easily lend themselves for the investigation of this new urban space are physical and network adjacency. Firstly, the site is physically adjacency to the Arts District, as well as a specialised education facility, called Sci-Arc which is dedicated to XYZ. Both are physically adjacency to the existing massive rail yard. In short, Sci-Arc and the Arts District are already engaged in a specialised urban interaction with each other and the rail yard by physical adjacency. It is the key point for the formation of a new physical adjacency between the new creative industry and the current specialised industrial area in downtown LA. Secondly, the site includes another urban feature, which is the huge rail infrastructure, and this railway system extends to the other industrial area. It can be started that the rail infrastructure is the key urban factor for creating a networked adjacency between the new site and other industrial area in downtown Los Angeles."

There are over a 150 non-restaurant food businesses providing over 15,000 jobs in theClean Tech Corridor alone. LAA's value creation mechanism will not only provide additional jobs, but will work to meet head on Los Angeles's emerging public health crisis in accessing healthy food. LAA's foundation is based upon four pillars: (i) localized dense urban vegetable production; (ii) agritech education facilities; (iii) mobile food distribution network; and, (iv) kitchen incubators. Each one of these components will integrate technology, labor and space in order to create the synergy required to attract and create the capital necessary for sustainable economic development. Winners of the Los Angeles Cleantech Corridor and Green District Competition

SCI‐Arc, the Southern California Institute of Architecture, announced the winners of the Los Angeles Cleantech Corridor and Green District Competition. An open ideas competition sponsored by SCI‐Arc and The Architect’s Newspaper, entrants were challenged to use the competition as a forum for provocative, even revolutionary, reconceptualizations of L.A.’s urban fabric. A community celebration was held on Saturday, October 9 in downtown Los Angeles on the SCI‐Arc campus.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa predicts the Corridor will transform downtown’s industrial core into an incubator for green jobs and technology, promote the sustainable growth of Los Angeles’ economy, and place the city at the forefront of the Cleantech revolution.

According to the designers, the winning entry, Project Umbrella, “…reinterprets LA’s existing infrastructure by implementing a point‐based renewal strategy that will gradually transform the city grid into a greener and more attractive public space. Mushroom‐like structures named solar evaporators tap into the city’s sewage, collecting and clarifying the black water originating from the surrounding blocks."

"The clear water is distributed and released into the streets through a process of evaporation and condensation triggering a transformation into a network of lush, cultivated landscapes. Green webs spreading out from the evaporators generate incentives for new, sustainable developments. The central urban plazas become focal points for a gradual process of transformation that will affect the way people will see, use, and experience their city.”

The young designers of MessyTECH describe their project this way: “MessyTech recognizes the full life cycles involved in “clean” industries, which can be complex and not perfectly clean. In turn, messy processes can lead to cleaner ones. Designing and manufacturing are inherently messy, where error can lead to progress and where flexibility reigns. Creativity and artistry are fostered in environments of cross‐pollination and collaboration, where conflict and harmony co‐generate good ideas. The weaving of diverse infrastructures, people, and activities makes for a rich and dynamic urban fabric.”

“SCI‐Arc came downtown to participate in the re‐imagining of downtown,” says Eric Own Moss, Director of SCI‐Arc. “The Cleantech discourse is an essential part of that re‐imagining. Unlike most cities to which Los Angeles is often compared, we're a young city with a realistic opportunity to define and implement the next conceptual city. Let's go.”

The competition asked architects, landscape architects, designers, engineers, urban planners, students, and environmental professionals to create an innovative urban vision for the Cleantech Corridor, a 2,000‐acre development zone on the eastern edge of downtown Los Angeles. Seventy entries were received from architectural firms and students in 11 countries including Austria, Britain, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Russia, and the United States. Entrants were encouraged to challenge conventional wisdom and move beyond industrial uses—creating an integrated economic, residential, clean energy, and cultural engine to re‐invigorate this Arts and Industrial District into a thriving mixed‐use center. The competition was presented with the Office of the Mayor and the Community Redevelopment Agency of the City of Los Angeles (CRA/LA), which established the Cleantech Corridor in the fall of 2008.

Jurors for the competition were Stan Allen, Dean of the School of Architecture at Princeton University; Principal, Stan Allen Architect; Hsinming Fung, Director of Academic Affairs, SCI‐Arc; Principal, Hodgetts+Fung Design and Architecture; Cris B. Liban, D.Env., P.E., Environmental Compliance and Services Department Manager Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority; Michael Maltzan, Principal, Michael Maltzan Architecture; Dennis McGlade, RLA, FASLA; Partner OLIN; Romel Pascual, City of Los Angeles Deputy Mayor, Energy and Environment; Nikolas Patsaouras, past president of the Board of the Water and Power Commissioners and former board member of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority; and Donald Spivack, Deputy Chief of Operations and Policy, Community Redevelopment Agency, L.A.

Commenting on the importance of the competition, juror Stan Allen noted that it “envisions a strategic way forward that re‐imagines the city of the future as a place not only of consumption, but a place where things are still made, but now produced using all of the new technologies available today to work more sustainably. It helps to move the debates forward in architecture, landscape and urbanism.” Of the winning project in the professional category by Constantin Boincean, Ralph Bertram, and Aleksandra Danielak, he says: “What appears initially to be an oversized piece of functional street furniture turns out to be connected into a larger network of water purification and resource distribution. The project is highly memorable as an image, at the same time as it transforms the way the city will treat its resources in the future.” He cites the student project by Randall Winston, Jennifer Jones, and Renee Pean as being a “beautifully drawn and well‐resolved urban insertion.”

The Cleantech Corridor is the second competition sponsored by SCI‐Arc’s Future Initiatives program and The Architect’s Newspaper. The first competition inspired by the passage of Los Angeles County’s transit funding measure—A New Infrastructure: Innovative Transit Solutions for Los Angeles—attracted an international array of architectural and design firms and promoted a community conversation about innovative design, policy, and planning responses.

“The Future Initiatives (SCIFI) program at SCI‐Arc aims to be a leader in driving debate and dialogue around the future of cities and urban regions,” states Peter Zellner, Coordinator of the SCIFI program. “SCIFI hosts competitions and exhibitions focused on Los Angeles to draw attention to pressing urban issues, stimulate public discussion and where possible drive the public and private sectors towards innovative ideas and solutions.”

An exhibition of the winning entries at the SCI-Arc Library Gallery just opened on October 9 and will be open until October 27. The gallery is open daily from 10 am to 6 pm.

London Design Medal 2010 Awarded to Thomas Heatherwick

A highlight of the annual London Design Festival is the presentation of the London Design Medal; given to a designer who has made a significant contribution to design and London having achieved international acclaim for their work. This year, Thomas Heatherwick has been awarded the Medal in recognition of his outstanding contribution to design.

The 2010 London Design Medal will be presented by Sir John Sorrell, Chairman of the London Design Festival, at a dinner tonight at London’s Andaz Hotel, the official hotel partner for the Festival.

Speaking beforehand, Ben Evans, Festival Director said:

“Thomas Heatherwick is a designer who defies definition whether he is working in in the fields of architecture, product design, sculpture and urban planning. He has developed a considerable reputation for his practice, creating a range of extraordinary objects and buildings; from rolling bridges to seaside cafes to spinning chairs. His stunning British Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo demonstrates to the world that British design is innovative, creative and good for business."

Heatherwick was chosen by a prestigious judging panel which includes Tony ChambersEditor-in-Chief, Wallpaper* magazine; Ilse Crawford Creative Director and founder StudioIlse; Brent Hoberman Founder mydeco.com; Mark Jones Director, Victoria & Albert Museum; Munira Mirza The Mayor's Advisor for Arts and Culture; Gwyn Miles Director of Somerset House Trust; Alice Rawsthorn Journalist, design critic for International Herald Tribune; Chris Sanderson Strategy and Insight Director, The Future Laboratory; Sir Paul Smith Designer and winner of the 2009 London Design Medal; Paul Thompson Rector, Royal College of Arta and Peter Wallis Chairman of SRU. Sir John Sorrell and Ben Evans were on the panel in a non-judging capacity.

The eighth London Design Festival, which runs until Sunday 26 September, reinforces London’s pre-eminence as the world’s capital of design. Today, UK designers are firmly at the forefront of national consciousness and their influence is felt around the world. A glance at the global leaders in design will reveal many a Brit, such as Jonathan Ive at Apple, Jasper Morrison, Paul Priestman, Peter Saville and Tom Dixon… to name but a few. There is no doubt that the country remains abundant with creativity in all areas, from fashion to furniture, from digital technology to graphic design.

Nowhere is this more apparent than in London during September. When London Fashion Week draws to a close, the London Design Festival continues to celebrate and promote creativity with a wide array of events, installations and exhibitions, showing design at its best.

CONCEPT:

In Nassim Villas, Zaha Hadid gives her trademark sensuous and seamless design to lush tropical greenery; and brings her cutting-edge technological explorations to the construction of luxurious living. Flanked by huge luscious tropical hardwood trees on either sides and diagonally facing the Singapore Botanical gardens sits one of the most breathtaking and desirable sites in Singapore. The intention of this design is to mimic the landscape, allow the architecture to be part of it, thereby accentuating the locale and its prominence.

Taking lead from the hilly terrain, a series of deliberate terracing and ramps are employed to usher the landscape into the heart of the villas. The groundscape weaves the site into the building and in doing so, affords an intimate interaction between the garden and the home. The form of the villas is designed to meld with the dynamism of the topography and coalesce into the landscape. Compositionally, there are two adjacent and overlapping volumes in each villa, forming the basis of the division of social and familial programs yet allowing these programs to progress fluently into one another. With a singular and fl uent stroke, a dramatic cantilever extends the topography into the sky; as well as reducing sun exposure at the western façade. The cantilever doubles as a rooftop terrace, wherein one can soak in an elevated and unobstructed view of the botanical gardens. The roof then drapes supplely down on its sides, touching the ground, embracing and sheltering the spaces within. Maximum frontage to the botanical gardens is designed, resulting in a deliberately public face and a landmark that becomes not just an abode but a showcase for living. In order to express the fluidity of the design, malleable materials will be used to craft the form and the groundscape. Construction materials for the exterior structure under consideration are Cast Aluminium and Fibre-Reinforced concrete while Fibre-Reinforced Plastic, CORIAN are being proposed for interior elements and glazing.
