I WANTED TO *SO* BADLY, but I was semi-broke at the time it ended, and I couldn't justify spending that much on an example of what can go wrong with kimono... >_> That said, though, if it gets relisted, I might still spring for it...

x-posted The Happy Fish / Kimono*Suki

Belated Mermaid Tsukesage Post

Thank you to those of you who sent me PMs at IGF about the shell houmongi; unfortunately, I ran out of cash and was outbid. ^^; Really, though, it meant a lot to know that people actually know my tastes well enough and care well enough to PM me out of the blue when something like that is listed- that meant even more than winning it would have! ^_^"

BUUUUUUUUUUUT a few days later I came into a bit more money, and got something even better: a tsukesage(?)houmongi(?) with A MERMAID ON IT.

From the Wikipedia page:

Karakuri ningyō (からくり人形?) are mechanized puppets or automata from Japan from the 17th century to 19th century. The word karakuri means "mechanisms" or "trick". In Japanese ningyō is written as two separate characters, meaning person and shape. It may be translated as puppet, but also by doll or effigy.[1] The dolls' gestures provided a form of entertainment.

Three main types of karakuri exist: Butai karakuri (舞台からくり, stage karakuri?) were used in theatre. Zashiki karakuri (座敷からくり, tatami room karakuri?) were small and used in homes. Dashi karakuri (山車からくり, festival car karakuri?) were used in religious festivals, where the puppets were used to perform reenactments of traditional myths and legends...

Karakuri ningyo would be an interesting addition to any Edo or later period story, as well as to a Wa-Steampunk world (after all, they did exist in our world's Edo-Meiji Japan, so it's not much of a stretch to integrate them into Wa-steampunk...)

For more information about karakuri, see karakuri.info or the afore-mentioned Wikipedia page.

Noh Mask Kimono 1905

Noh Mask Kimono 1905, originally uploaded by Blue Ruin1.
A Maiko (Apprentice Geisha) from Osaka wearing a beautiful Hikizuri (trailing kimono), decorated with an O-Beshimi style Noh Mask of the mythical tengu (daemon). I vaguely recall picking up this tip somewhere else, but its been years and I don't remember where. >_> Anyways, they wanted a graphic showing how I do this... It's much easier than sewing on chikari-nuno.

Basically, you clip both ends of a korin belt to your nagajuban's eri, adjust the belt to be MUCH shorter (usually as small as it can get) and then you pull a koshi-himo through the resultant loop, tying your juban closed with it as usual. It keeps your collar down, is easily adjustable, requires no sewing and can be used with multiple juban- switching it out just requires undoing the clips and clipping the belt onto a new juban.
(Featured by SnowFoxCreations)

Via Flickr:
Request from someone at IGF. Wearing so many layers in hot weather might not have been the best idea, though- I guzzled cold tea all day and still almost melted. @_@ In the end, I stripped to one houmongi.

For those who don't know (most of you?) my steampunk persona is a Meiji-era textile trader of unknown nationality who travels in an airship and trades fabric around the world. Less cool than an air pirate, but infinitely more enjoyable (to me, at least- it would be my ideal job. #_#)

You can see the ruffles/petticoats better here. They were upcycled from thrift-mart curtains at 3:00AM last night. ^^; I couldn't afford brown hakama/get them in time, so I did a steampunk/Victorian/Meiji crossover thing. (Yes, the obi, I know, I know... It was intentional.)

And this was me when it was over. After about 6 hours, those layers and petticoats HAD TO GO. ;A; It was like, two trash-bags full (in volume) of what I removed and dumped in the car trunk. >_> Mom said that I looked better in the normal houmongi, and I'm inclined to agree. The "obijime" is an extra tasuki-gake I had with me, since I neglected to take a real obijijme with me- or an obi-makura, which led to a really weird musubi... >_>

I label this as a costume (since it's a stripped-down version of my costume) but it's really closer to how I normally dress, since the layers and petticoats are gone. ^^;

I ended up with a Deidara plushie (♥), a cat-shaped desk trashcan and Flame of Recca OST 2, so it was fun. (That said, the Flame of Recca music is absolutely horrible, even though it's an awesome series... >_> The only good piece is Mikagami's theme, "Swordsman of Water", which is beautiful, but the rest of the BGM is *awful*- and his theme is on the first OST, anyway.)

While we were there, some people had a Vocaloid wedding in cosplay. No, I mean, a real wedding: they were in cosplay as Miku and Kaito, and they actually tied the knot dressed like that in the hotel chapel (or, at least, a room they used as a chapel- I don't know if it's a real chapel or not.) I'd love to be a fly on the wall to spy when they explain those wedding photos to their kids 10 or 20 years from now. ^^; Their whole entourage were dressed as other Vocaloid characters, like Luka and Len... I don't know much about Vocaloid, but I recognised them from the Pullips, since Groove made a collab release with Vocaloid... I also had a bit of an epiphany, realizing for the first time that "Vocaloid" is a linguistic combination of "vocal" and "hemorrhoid". WHY did I realize this?!?!?! >_> And now you have to know it too. +_+

The con was overrun by Akatsuki cosplayers, as usual: which is a plus, since I'm a huge Akatsuki fangirl (I don't like the Naruto protags, though... ^^;;;;;) I wanted to stay for the presentation on Japanese Military Tactics of the Sengoku Era, but I was too tired and I went home... ;_; I'm sure it was good, though. The artist alley was fun, too- they had two steampunk artists this year, but I was kind of broke, since I hit the artist alley AFTER going to the dealer's room... Anyway, it was fun.

-------
x-posted to SnowFox Creations / Kimono*Suki / The Happy Fish

NOW LIVE : Kimono Stock Photos

I've completed taking photos of my collection- which included every type of kimono except for stage costumes, menswear and a few antiques- and the photos are now available for download here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/grouperkun/sets/72157626300940068/.
Normal stock rules apply:
♥ Don't sell them (or things made from them.)
♥ Don't claim you made them.
♥ Don't use them for evil.

Educational use- for pamphlets and brochures for lectures- is okay, and so is use for blog articles, Wikipedia, etc. Credits are nice, but I won't freak out if you forget.

Brown + Grey Houmongi with matching Antique Obi

I won this a while back; I hope to get some decent photos of it soon. BUT ONTO MORE IMPORTANT THINGS: I want to use these as a basis for a Meiji-era inspired steampunk costume. My persona is a textile trader from... somewhere (possibly the USA) who travels in an airship (THERE MUST BE AIRSHIPS) but instead of exploring, she trades textiles internationally- especially between Asia and Europe. She's technically a librarian/janitor/something-or-other on the ship, but she trades textiles on the side, since she's traveling anyway, and loves fabric. (^^;) Any ideas on how to make this a bit more steamy, and a bit more Meiji-era? I'm planning on using boots and possibly some sort of utility-belt contraption, and perhaps pairing it with hakama? Thoughts?

Rare Kimono Examples: Light-Up Fiber Optic Obi

Unfortunately, the item has been sold, but this is rare enough to warrant posting: a light-up fiber-optic obi! Pictures below courtesy of Ichiroya. Their description:

This fukuro obi is added very unique device - otaiko part is added optical fibers, it shines various colors!
Obimakura(pillow) is added, and dry-cell batteries are put in it, and obi and the batteries are connected by optical fibers. Its colors change with time.
Obi is made of silk and colorful flower circle pattern is woven.
It has some small patinas and slight smudges. Lining has a stain, but as a whole it is in very good condition.
* It is old one, and we can't guarantee the device work properly. XD

I bought a bulk kimono fabric pile from *Tokugawa* because there were some datejime in it. When it got here, I found (at least) 2 datejime, NINETEEN koshi-himo, about 9 haneri, a mae-ita with a built-in pocket, a [grungy] huge furoshiki, a silk handkerchief, the entire bottom skirt of a kurotomesode and the rest of the 2 foot cube box was packed with all sorts of cool fabrics. #w# I totally recommend stalking his store for more bulk buys; hopefully he'll list some more.

Oh, and guess how much I paid for all of this? $15.00 USD + $15 shipping. (#w#) Which is the main reason I recommend the store; I got this huge box of awesomeness for (more or less) the price of a fancy DVD.

Tutorial: DIY Date-Eri

<img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5161/5327499294_f358dcb1fb.jpg" style="border: solid 2px #000000;" max-width: 500px; alt="" />
Tutorial: DIY Date-Eri, originally uploaded by SnowFoxCreations.
This is super-easy. So easy, in fact, that I actually do it (and I'm kind of notorious for my laziness. :/) It's also an easy project for a beginning seamstress (or tailor, for guys) since it's only straight stitching + turning things inside out and ironing- basic stuff. And since it uses little fabric, even if you totally ruin it, you'll just come out with experience but little loss.

It's possible to make this fancier by tucking some lace into it; just tuck the lace inside before you start sewing, so that the part of the lace you want to show is inside, but the bottom of the lace is sticking out, so you stitch over it when you sew this.

When it's done, there are 4 different ways to wear it, which just adds to the appeal for those of us who don't like to put in any more work than we have to- you're basically getting 4 date-eri for the trouble of sewing one.

Disclaimer: I don't own any *real* date-eri and this isn't the traditional way to make them; it's just what works for me. I have no clue how the authentic ones are sewn. @_@ BUUUUT this should look like one when it's finished. And it's super-cheap, which frees up more money for obi. Fwahahaha...

Usual usage rules apply: you can basically do anything you want with this, as long as you don't claim you made it or use it for something evil. (I'm not sure if the latter is POSSIBLE, but I don't want to take any chances... XP )
(Featured by SnowFoxCreations)

Nibushiki Kimono + Tsuke Obi Kitsuke Tutorial

Part 1 of 2:

Part 2 of 2:

Hopefully I didn't mess this up *too* badly. ^^; This is how I wear nibushiki kimono and tsuke obi (although, honestly, I don't wear them all that often, so I'm no expert- if I did something wrong, perhaps a kimono guru could let me know?) Anyway, it's at least workable this way. Ignore the exploding obi- for some reason, even when I'm wearing regular obi, the obi contents (obi-ita, etc.) always want to pop out and the obi-age won't cover enough well. @_@ But at least people who want to see roughly how these things are tied on can get the idea; you should really combine this tutorial with the tutorials for wearing normal kimono, since those are more in-depth and let you know about folding tricks and stuff.

2010 October Kitsuke Photos

Kimono-hime Time! When people use the term "juban" they are usually referring to the nagajuban- most of the search results for juban on Ebay will bring up nagajuban.

Hadajuban (Lowest kimono layer, worn above underwear and beneath nagajuban; Almost always made of white cotton, often with lace accents. Usually has built-in ties for closure.

Nagajuban are worn beneath the kimono and on top of the hadajuban. They are often pink or white, but come in every other color as well. Floral patterns are common, but almost any pattern can be found on nagajuban. They are usually made of silk or polyester. If you're making your own, buying a nurses' scrub shirt and lengthening it or wearing it with a wrap-around skirt works perfectly: and those shirts, which come in all sorts of awesome colors and patterns, are about $1.00 USD at your local thrift mart. While you're there, pick up some cute bed sheets/2 pillowcases that match the shirt more or less, and you can really have quite a nice juban. (Just wash the sheets before using them! The old owner might have had headlice or something. x_x) Bebemochi-san made a whole hadajuban this way but since I'm lazy, I prefer to use a nurses' scrubs shirt as a basis and just add a skirt. It's also possible to turn one of these shirts into a whole nagajuban by splitting it down the front and adding sleeves, a collar and a skirt.

Tutorial for the Nurses' Scrubs Nagajuban:

Example of a Common Bicolor Nagajuban:

Nagajuban should be about ankle-length, but vintage juban are often much shorter- especially on tall Western people. It's possible to adjust them by adding fabric to the center (via the same process sometimes used to lengthen short kimono) or turn them into nibushiki (2-piece) nagajuban, which are gaining in popularity recently.

A ready-made 2-part/nibushiki nagajuban usually looks something like the image below, with the parts that show + the sleeves made of a nice, usually patterned fabric and the body made out of something like white cotton or polyester. This type is useful and easy to make if you're making your own nagajuban, since it doesn't require that the fabric be as long and the parts that don't show can be made out of whatever scrap fabric you have on hand (including, but not limited to, old pillowcases and curtain remnants. Be creative and thrifty- less money spent on juban means more money for kimono and obi!)

IMAGE INFORMATION: The illustrations I've used in this blog entry are made by me, and are released into the public domain. If you want to reuse them for any purpose, with or without attribution or compensation, you're free to do so. I'm currently working on making public domain illustrations for everything kimono-related; the lack of public domain images for kimono reference is a bit troublesome, and I hope to remedy that just a bit. My work so far is viewable here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/grouperkun/tags/public-domain-kimono-images/. You can subscribe to the public domain kimono image feed here, should you so choose. I *do* take requests for what to do next, so if you need a stock illustration of a certain type of kimono or kimono-related item, just comment here or at my Flickr gallery to let me know.

Late to the (Kimono) Sale... ;_;

I didn't win any of these. ;_; All of them except for the dragon houmongi (from YJA) were from Shinei, and someone keeps hitting the ocean themed kimono before I do... Then, I decided that it needed more color (and, also, the haner that came with it was kind of grungy x_x) so I bought 2 $1 bandana at Walmart and with a bit of sewing and cutting, turned this into a modern-looking (when worn, anyway) hanjuban. :3 I'm really happy with this. :) Those Walmart bandana are cheap, awesome and for only $2, breath new life into a generic (and old) juban. :)

Made from this:

20100901 Kitsuke : Mauve Iromuji + White Nagoya Obi with Purple Flowers

20100901 Kitsuke : Mauve Iromuji + White Nagoya Obi with Purple Flowers, originally uploaded by SnowFoxCreations.
I know, I know- no Nagoya obi with iromuji. ^^; I love this look, though...

The obiage and obijime are part of a set (which came with a matching haneri) by United Colors of Bennetton., bought at Rakuten.
(Featured by SnowFoxCreations)

people : maiko (geisha apprentices) kyoto, japan / canon 7d 日本・京都 舞妓

people : maiko (geisha apprentices) kyoto, japan / canon 7d 　　日本・京都 舞妓 　, originally uploaded by momoyama.
舞妓 絢佳司さん、市和佳さん、彩乃さん

people : maiko (geisha apprentices) kyoto, japan / canon 7d 　　日本・京都 舞妓 　 　 EF 85mm f1.8

The maiko (apprentice geisha) Ayano (centre), Ichiwaka (left) and Ayakazu (right) after performing a dedicatory dance at Heian Shrine, Kyoto, Japan.

Kyoto was the capital of Japan from 794 until 1868.
