First of all this book got me out of a reading slump. I opened the book and didn’t stop till I was done. I haven’t done that in a while. The mixture of historical fiction/romance/romantic suspense/mystery was the perfect combination to keep me interested! I suppose having a female bada** is what helped too! She was a future girl living in the past. She wasn’t dainty at all but she still had her proper self!! I wanted to know who the bad guy was and why! I had ideas but I was sooo wrong! I loved it!!

The romance was just right and it showed how sometimes you have to have faith and trust in the other person and not get distracted in what needs to be done. Lord Wolverton at first didn’t care to find Alice to be a spy. But he grew to trust her. And Alice still somehow kept herself from reproach and knew her stuff. They both had skills that complimented each other and together, they got the job done.

I really really loved this book. I just haven't had a book to keep me fully engaged lately. But I couldn't stop once I opened it up! It was full of action, adventure, mystery, intrigue and a touch of romance. I just can’t really describe enough of why I loved it!!

If you like historical fiction, post war problems, stories of mystery, finding out who the bad guy is, loving families, women who are spies, knife skills, horseback riding, people having good instincts, and finding love than this might be for you! As for me, it’s on my to read and reread list!

I'm glad I decided to read this book. I generally don't read much anthologies. I like stories that are longer. But I really love all these authors and couldn't resist. This is a great compilation of Christmas Spirit and finding a little happiness and love! I can tell you that I did shed a tear or two while reading each of these stories. That shows how much they affected me!

My only complaint or something is that I was sad to read the Dangerous Duke's wife's delivery in here. I was hoping to read it in the next story. If I hadn't picked it up or that I got some warning about who Sarah Eden was writing about, I might have missed it and I so love the Dangerous Duke!

If you like short stories, holiday anthologies, Christmas Spirit, traditions, dressmaker's, finding love than this might be for you!

This is not your typical historical book at least for me. I usually like the romance in them. The romance in this book is very light and secondary to the plot of getting Parliament to sign a women’s suffrage bill. There is some fact mixed into the book and a piece of note after the book ends.

Molly is Lady Amanda’s personal maid. Lady Amanda has been working on getting women the right to vote. And Molly is totally on board with it. Molly acts before she thinks and she gets herself into some major problems. Molly has a huge heart and just wants justice for all!

Chloe is the daughter of a high nobleman. She is also shy. But as she learns more about the movement, she finds her own voice.

Annesley is the son of another high nobleman who is caught in the snares of an evil bossman who is willing to help everyone out of their debts in return for helping him with his side business of brothel and pretty much free child labor in the factories. Most of the children go because their parents are high on opium or the like and are told to go.

Annesley was also a spy once and was now out of the business until he is blackmailed into doing some spywork about the movement. Chloe is someone whom he is very fond of and she is right in the middle of the intel and Annesley is sick about it and left with nothing to do about it.

Molly gets in deep with the evil Theo and learns of all he does. She is determined to right this injustice. There are no indecent scenes but there is a child who gets hurt in the factory. There is a kissing scene or two towards the end.

If you are looking for women’s suffrage, child labor laws, woman who fight for justice, parliament, the start of change in England, orphanges, a well written story, finding freedom and happiness with a little romance sprinkled in then this might be for you!

It’s always funny how you can despise someone and realize later that you really didn’t even know that person and all your reasons for despising them were not really who you thought them to be. I guess it just goes to show that we shouldn’t judge people! Also funny is how we have problems verbalizing our feelings or even acknowledging to yourself about your feelings!!

Once I started reading, I didn’t get up to do anything until I was done. I was curious how this would turn out. I was sitting in a need to be reupholstered furniture that was really lumpy but I just wanted to know what kind of person William really was and how Marion would learn who he really is!

Discovering people’s characters and what they stand for brings me to tears in books easily. I liked seeing William soften to Marion. The twists at the end; well I wasn’t expecting those. I loved seeing how family is important to both Marion and William.

If you like historical fiction, twists, loving families, righteous quests, gamblers, disguises, how one bad moment can make you want to stop sharing what you love, not saying what you are feeling, humor, falling in water, and finding love in a time where it wasn’t the norm to marry for love than this might be for you!!

Anneka Walker was raised by a librarian and an English teacher turned judge. After being fed a steady diet of books, she decided to learn about writing. This is a very touching book that is based on facts. I found myself crying several times and I read the book in one sitting. I just couldn't put it down! I wanted to know how this would end! If you don't want to know some of the things that happen skip the next paragraph and see how it makes you feel!

John and Maile( daughter of chief of the island) meet under not so good circumstances! John killed Maile's fiance. When John gets hurt, Maile takes him to a secluded area of the island. She has such a kind, good and stubborn heart. She wants to kill him or let him die of his wounds (that she accidentally gave him). But it is not in her nature and she is facinated to see that John wants to understand her culture. They form a sort of friendship/frenemy relationship. When he is healed enough, he finds her home area and again he is captured. But Maile won't let him be killed and when Maile's father hears John out and offers to help their island from an oncoming war with another island, Maile is furious. She doesn't want for her people to use guns. But to her father the chief, she is just a girl. But she is so very wise and compassionate, she just wants to be heard.

I love the way they dance around their feelings for each other. She is tasked to teach him how to navigate without the navigation tools that were taken. After all, he is the only one who can communicate with Maile's people. So they spend a lot of time together and John becomes totally and willingly engrossed in their culture. He listens and trusts Maile! Maile trusts John too.

I can't begin to describe this book and the way you feel the culture and how important family is to these islanders from Hawaii! You start to feel as if you are there and watching it all and feeling what the author is describing. I feel the humidity, the ocean waves and the movement of the water. I feel the bang of the guns and want to drop to the ground myself. I feel the love that the people feel for each other and the influence even Maile has over them. I feel the tide coming in and out, the rocking of the canoes, the sadness of a person lost, and how Maile's sister plays with her hair and relaxes her. I feel the love the sisters have for each other. I feel the love and joy of the first kiss from Maile and John and I feel the heart beating when they first touch fingers by mistake and then not by mistake. Ugh, it is a beautifully written book that just makes you feel all kinds of good and happy! Read it, you won't regret it!

If you like Hawaii, cliffs, war and strategy, working together in a culture, the ocean, the constellations, whales, dolphins, brothers who are doing what brothers do and that is to annoy you, learning how to use a gun, journalling, making medicine with plants, flowers, protecting your way of life and finding love with someone who is so different from you and yet so full of life like you, then this book is for you!

I got this book from the net galley for review but I need to buy a paperback of my own for the pictures and to reread it and then share it with others!

Ilima Todd was born and raised on the north shore of Oahu and dives for octopus with her dad every time she visits otherwise she’s diving into books in the Rocky Mountains where she lives with her husband and four children. I could have told you this was a 5 star book before I even opened it! I have loved all the Jonquil Brothers and I have a connection to Harry, Harold, Holy Harold and Monkey (his life seemed to have given him several nicknames and while he is tormented by some of those, he is also uplifted by another). I am the same type of person as he is. I loved watching him work through figuring out what kind of person he was and how he fit in and what made him whole. I loved his quirkiness. He would have fit well into this day and age. He loved to climb things and climb walls and rocks. He even fashioned his shoes for climbing. In the end, this love of climbing, helps him become a better person and he finds it helps him better connect to people and save the day! Harold is an introvert but he loves to help others. He just needed the right person to help him become the man he is.

Sarah is the woman that has always had a place in Harold's heart. And her heart has always had a piece of Harold in it as well but things ended abruptly years ago and she left for America. But Sarah is back. She finds Harold to be boorish and aloof and knows that the Harold she knew is still there. She issues a challenge that she can be a better vicar than he is. Although it was a sting to his ego, He listened to what she had to say. I keep going back to Harold and I am trying to tell you about Sarah. I just can't help it, I love Harold and all the Jonquils. I really love it when they all get together and have their motto moment and they all rally together for a cause!!! I cried when they do that! Every time with every book!.

Any way, Sarah is really good for him. But meanwhile her uncle is the villain of the story. He is despicable and men could be cruel to women in those days! But the Jonquils know how to save the day!

I love this story and I want more and I am going to go and reread this book right now!.

If you like finding love, villains, loving families, climbing just about anything, historical fiction, finding yourself, becoming a better person, this might be for you too!!

My Review
I laughed often reading about Grace's situations! She is true to herself and with her being so kind, liking to work, and honest she has a hard time trying to flirt! She gets herself in these predicaments and she just makes me smile!! She knows whom she wants and she tells Mr Barton she is trying to make a scandal! Mr. Barton, although trying to fight it, is slowly falling for her too!

I was missing something in the beginning and I couldn't figure it out until over half way through the book! And an interesting twist it was.

Some of the men in this story are disgusting! Just sayin...

If you are looking for a book with a little scandal, seeing that a lot of men were disgusting in the 1800's, that makes you laugh, finding a real love where you care about what each other's lives are about, family, a home of your own and a happily every after then here it is! As for me, I want to reread it again!!

If you are a history buff, this might interest you. It ends in New Orleans at the end of the War of 1812.

Charlotte, or Charlie as she’s known in the book, is desperate to find her young brother! Their parents were killed and they were sold off. Charlotte manages to escape. Her brother, Will, is taken by Indians and she hears that he is probably in New Orleans. She is on a quest to find him and she will do whatever it takes to find him. Including to dress as a boy and become a “swabbie” on a ship heading to New Orleans.

Captain Alden Thatcher is not easily fooled. He knows that she is a girl. He also realized that she was in a dire situation, so he decides to keep her secret to get her away from the men looking for her. In order to keep it, he allows her to work very hard. She is a hard worker and her father taught her to use a gun and how to swim before they died. She is also an “arbitrator” and she knows how to get other people to become loyal and friends with her. She also sacrifices a lot in order to do it. But she wins the crew over, even though she is a very scrawny 18 year old “boy”.

Alden begins to care for her. And through many conversations, mishaps and events, Charlie begins to love him. But she knows it could never be, she could never tell him who she is.

War happens and events happen that find everyone bonding with each other to stay alive and find love and happiness.

For me, I am not much of a war reader. I did learn a lot. Some really cool facts, actually. I liked how Alden and Charlie found each other after being separated and how that whole, “sorry I lied to you” scene played out. And Charlie won my heart when she found the person who had her brother and what she does! Made me stop to get some kleenex!

If you like wars, ships, swabbies, New Orleans, life with french, spanish and indians learning to live together, family, and finding love in impossible situations then this might be for you.

I liked this book. A Lot! It’s nice to read a book that shows how we are all flawed and we all feel like we are not enough and how we learn to overcome our own imperfections and how we can forgive others and find great joy in life! The characters in this book have their own challenges, and just about every character in this book has challenges and I loved to read how they coped. I loved the dynamics of the friends and family and I really want to go back in time and live with this group of people! I wouldn’t last long without my air conditioning though!

Anyway, Miss Adeline Hayes and Charity have been best friends since childhood. So when Adeline’s family circumstances leave it that they need money, it was perfect for Charity to have a lady’s companion. But Charity recently broke up with her intended and no one knows why. Miss Hayes is a little hurt that Charity didn’t tell her why. So when Charity’s father sends them off to his sister’s home in the country, he makes it clear to Adeline that she find someone for Charity to marry or her family will be forced into dire circumstances. Adeline does not share the threat with Charity and begins to play matchmaker.

Things seem going well and even Adeline is finding it hard to resist the unsmiling handsome irritating man that is Mr. Evan Whitfield. But as they get to know more about each other’s character, they see each other in a different light.

When Mr. George Henley makes an appearance, Charity is beside herself. She is still in love with him and no one's the wiser of why she broke off the engagement. As always, time tells all and things are said and done and more secrets and lies are told. And when everything comes to a head, it is awful. I had to put the book down. I was invested and loved all these characters and when everything is found out, it is awful and I had no idea how the issues would be resolved. But that is where forgiveness and mercy come into play and Ugh! I couldn’t get enough of them! I wanted to jump into the book and hug them all!

“Happiness does not equal perfection,” Mrs. Beckett said softly. “And neither do you need to be perfect to achieve happiness. There will always be difficulties in life, and we will always make mistakes. But happiness is what makes life worthwhile, what makes it bearable. We must find joy in the everyday things. “

We were forced to part ways for a minute, following the dance, and when we met once again, his face had regained more of his normal thoughtfulness. As I circled about him in formation with the other women, he traced my every movement. I knew I was a good dancer, my lines graceful, my feet light, but with him watching me, I felt like so much more. I was beautiful. I was alive.
I was loved.

If you like books that show how we all feel inadequate at times, forgiveness, apples, little boys who are selfless, little baby girls, snow storms, horse riding, charades, dancing, dementia, loving families, unloving families, and finding love and happiness than this might be for you! As for me, it will always be a book to reread over and over!

This was a fun read! Living in those times was hard. Marrying for convenience and not for love would drive me crazy. As for our main character, Beth, it was very hard for her. She is so full of life, happy and vibrant! She seemed to light a room when she comes in. She just exudes happiness to all around her. There is not a mean bone in her body. She is introduced to Malcolm and as he needed a wife but has been to busy to look for one, she just seemed the right person to do it! He is a good man, handsome too.She loved his children immediately! But she was told by Malcolm that her marriage would not me one of affection. Beth's heart didn't get the memo. Malcolm's heart didn't get that memo either. It was just a process for Malcolm, as he still loved his wife who had passed away some years before and he didn't think he could ever love again. Plus, Malcolm is a spy and had not told Beth! So things happen and both kept some secrets! Beth's mainly being that she loved her husband!

I loved the way the author showed the affection brewing in them for the other! One too proud to say so and the other afraid of the wraith it might bring! But he doted on her so and it was so nice to read it! It made me sigh!

Then there is Malcolm's spy job. It gets in the way of Malcolm's life. There was a mystery there. I was always trying to guess how it would end and who was the bad guy and how they would catch the bad guy. I didn't get any of it right! I was happy it wasn't that easy to solve. Now, I am going to read the other books in this series to see the lives of the other London League operatives!

So if you like a little mystery mixed in with a romance! A marriage of convenience made into one of affection! Momentary blindness, children, games, then this might be for you!

I just want to crawl into this book and live there awhile! They both live in upper social class but both of these main characters have a way of bridging those classes and helping to make everyone have a happy life. Well except for the main characters themselves anyway! Haha

Speaking of the main characters… They both are good and strong people! Their families each have their own issues. Lizzy’s parents die and her and her brother are orphaned and find themselves under their evil Uncle’s care. He is evil! He is selfish! And he wants everything and could care less for Lizzy or her brother. So, they run away! Barton's family, that the runaways find themselves living with due to an accident, loves Barton but they are also protective and may go a bit too far in their protection! But they love each other regardless!

Lizzy is prideful, stubborn, and will do whatever it takes to save her brother! Lizzy literally runs into Barton one day and he is immediately smitten with her. Lizzy however, remains aloof and secretive. Barton introduces himself as Barton and Lizzy immediately thinks he is Mr Barton not Barton Everly, who is Master of Everly Manor. He does not correct her and wants her to trust him. Neither are starting off on the right foot for that. But as the truth comes out, as it always does, you would think that would be it and they would confess their undying love and live happily ever after but that is not how this book goes. It has several little twists to get to that point and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

So if you like books that have evil villains, stubborn pride, doing what you think is right and sacrificing your happiness for another’s, strong family bonds, horses, puppies, family jewels, servants, gruff servants, meddling family members, and finding happiness after thinking it would never be possible, then this might be for you! As for me, I’m still smiling! (And can I have a Barton too?)

Chalon Linton was first introduced to Jane Austen by a dear friend and now she can’t get enough of handsome men in tailcoats. Her intrigue in the genre stems from a nostalgic longing for manners, wit, and true love. Fortunately, Chalon found her dashing gentleman, married him, and now lives happily ever after in Southern California.

Review by KellyFirst of all, I can’t even imagine how the author was able to write this book. It must have been hard with all the emotions and abuse going on. At least I know I had to stop often to wipe my eyes so I could even see the words on the page. This book is udderly raw, emotional and filled with empowerment! The main two characters lean on each other and when one is weak the other is strong! I couldn’t even imagine putting these two people together and expect that they could have a happily ever after! (Also, note that I didn’t say they did have a happily ever after. To see what kind of ending they have you have to read the book!)

This is a story about a boy and a girl and how they live two different lifestyles but end up having the same awful abuse in their lives! We see the day to day life of the girl, Scarlett, and see what she has been dealing with and how she has kept it a secret from everyone. Then we see Jesse, the boy, who has kept much of his life a secret from others and we slowly learn of the things his life has dumped upon him. When they were little, they were best friends until one day they weren’t. It takes most of the book to find out what happened that changed their friendship. And with every chapter, the book urges you on! I had to know more and I couldn’t read it fast enough! You’d get a little piece of information and that would leave you with more questions. The first chapter sucks you in as you see Jesse as a little boy and just how bad his life started out! I was totally glued to this book ‘til the end!

Glory is a whole other story. I really liked her! I still want to know more of her story! She is an enigma!

I could go on and on. I have tried for days to figure out how I would write this review and I couldn’t come up with enough praise for it! I still can’t. It’s mesmerizing. It’s raw. It’s sad! At times, it’s hopeless. But it is a book worth every page read!

I love all of Katie’s books! They always promise a very thought provoking read!

If you like stories of overcoming abuse, empowerment, revelation, palm readers, tarot cards, farmers, trees to climb, living in trailers, living in very expensive homes, living in itty bitty apartments, finding someone who gets you and who helps you heal, growing up, college, family of a different kind then this might be for you! As for me, I loved it!

“So you’re the decision maker now?”
He waits too many beats before speaking or maybe not enough. “I took on this role because, believe it or not, I care. I won’t pretend to understand the pain you’ve gone through, and I won’t pretend to understand your connection to this land. I’ve watched you grow up. I know, for you, this farm is like a Band-Aid on cuts that won’t stop bleeding.”
If that was meant to make me feel better, it didn’t. “You’ll never vote for me. You’re biased.”
“I’m not biased.”
For days I’ve been a stick under pressure, being bent too far. Finally, I snap. “I know you told Gran not to take me in after Mom died and to put me in foster care. You told her I was too broken and couldn’t be fixed. I know because I heard you. Tell me now you’re not biased.”
Guilt flashes over his face, and he tries to hide it as he flips through the folder in his hands. “If it helps, that’s why your grandmother set up the tribunal and chose two other people to help make the decision. Majority vote will win, and she believed you’ll rise to the challenge.”
I’m not sure if I respect him or hate him for not denying what we both know is true regarding the foster care. I’m also not sure how I feel that he doesn’t apologize either.
“She chose people who will give you a fair shake,” he continues. “This isn’t a death sentence. It’s a wakeup call. It’s August, and you have until May to prove you’re responsible. You have time. Take it. Prove me wrong.”
A growing sense of purpose takes root within me, and I do my best to funnel my anger and grief into it. “Who, besides you, is on the tribunal?”
If I tell you then I run the risk of you putting on a show for those people. This is your chance to change for the better. Take advantage of it.” Marshall leaves the paperwork on the antique table, shoves his folder back in his leather bag, and stands. “If it’s any consolation, I want you to succeed, but I want you to truly succeed. I won’t vote for you to keep the land unless you show me you understand what it means to run a farm of this magnitude.”
It’s no consolation. That’s him attempting to ease his guilt for when he votes against me.
“I’m sorry for your loss, Jesse. If you need to talk or if you’d like to stop by for a meal, you’re welcome at my house. And if you get tired of being here alone, you can live with us. We have plenty of room.”
I don’t believe any of that, but I nod because doing so will get him out of my home faster. Marshall stares at me for a few more seconds, as if contemplating saying more, but he doesn’t. Instead he walks out, shutting the door behind him.
His engine purrs to life and rocks crack under his moving tires. Then there’s silence. Maddening silence. I drop into Gran’s recliner, lower my head into my hands and close my eyes. I’ve lost Gran, and now I could lose my land. The only thing left that I love. The only thing in my life that brings me peace. “Why, Gran?”
I strain to listen in the silence, and my gut twists that there’s no response. “I miss you.”
Still no response and my head begins to throb. My cell in my back pocket vibrates. I dig it out, expecting to see a text from one of my friends, but I pop my neck to the right at the sight of Glory’s name. You need to stop by tomorrow night.
Me: No
Glory: I know of your grandmother’s plan
Me: So do I
Glory: But I know who the people are who will be deciding your future.
Me—stone cold frozen.
Glory: Stop by tomorrow at nine. I should be wrapping up my last session then.
Me: I won’t be there.
Glory: Yes, you will.

A scraping of a chair, a tray full of food and I glance over with my practiced smile in welcome. It’s not Camila, Evangeline, or anyone else from the group. It’s green eyes, red hair, a familiar mischievous smile that used to be reserved only for me, and my blood pounds with excitement as if someone lit a sparkler in my chest. Then I frown because I’m not supposed to feel this way. Not with him. Not with anyone.

Jesse Lachlin winks at me as he sits across from me like no time has passed from when we climbed trees together. “What’s up, Tink?”

Another thrill runs through me but then my muscles tighten. Stupid, antiquated reaction belonging to a dead past. “What are you doing here?”

Jesse pops a fry into his mouth, chews, then picks up another as if he has no intention of answering. I scan the cafeteria. Several people are watching us, curious as to why Jesse Lachlin is sitting with me, or is event at lunch, or even at school.

I honest to God groan in frustration. “There’s no room at the inn.”

He surveys the table, takes in the empty seats, my books, and then gives me a good look. A slow look. As if he’s trying to memorize every inch he’s drinking in. My cheeks redden because that somehow feels a little too intimate for lunch. Feels a little too intimate for someone I’m no longer friends with. It feels too intimate if we were friends.

I glance away, but I sense him still staring at me. God help me, I want to stare back.

I thought the series was unusual where there is death first but I looked up the meaning of serendipity and it fits: the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way. Where the first relationship ends not happily but a better one is found because of the people around it. In this book, Morgan (the first born) falls in love with his deceased brother’s wife. She also finds herself falling in love with him. She never thought that would be possible after the circumstances that brought her to this family in the first place.

But at this particular time, the law states that you can not marry your siblings spouse because they are, in the eyes of the law, your sibling now. Stupid law!! Anyway, I didn’t think it would be possible with every turn of events because nothing, NOTHING, was going there way. Secrets, laws, heirs, propriety, and the ton made things worse. Nothing is as miserable as finding the one person you love, get along with, and who gets you and find that it you can never be together. Well, when there is a will, there is a way, I suppose.

I loved Morgan and Abby’s characters. They made me laugh often! They are both competitive and good sports! They both have a dry sense of humor. I loved their family and friends. I also liked seeing more of the characters from the first book. There are a TON of great quotes. But they are kind of life quotes and as much as I love them, I would rather you see this book with happiness and laughter. The excerpt below is hilarious!!!

If you like books with impossible situations, books that make you laugh, sports, trees, beach, running your toes in the sand, honest people, good friends, balls (as in the dancing ones), horseback on a beach (cause that is what I would love to do), widowers, and of course finding that one person who totally gets you and whom you can talk to about anything then this might be a book for you!

Morgan stifled a chuckle as Abby examined another spoonful of the liquid. “I’ve been whipping it for several minutes, but it doesn’t seem even a little thicker to me. Have I forgotten to add something?”

“No,” said the cook in clipped tones.

Morgan stepped forward and leaned in close. “If your arm is tired—”

Abby jumped, and what liquid remained on the spoon splattered across Morgan’s face. She spun around, her eyes growing wide with horror when she saw what she’d done.

He wiped a dab from his nose and tasted it. “A little more sugar, perhaps?”

“Brigston! I’m so dreadfully sorry.” She dropped the spoon into the bowl and grabbed a rag from a nearby wash basin, dabbing it across his face.

“Not that rag!” cried the cook. “It was only just used to mop the floors.”

Abby dropped it as though it had burned her, and Morgan tried not to cringe at the thought of filthy water coating his face.

Monsieur Roch retrieved a clean rag and held it out to him, appearing apologetic. He flicked another irritated glance at Abby before returning to his work.

As Morgan wiped the cream from his face, he wondered what Abby would do or say next. Offer another fumbled apology? Make her excuses and flee? Pretend the incident never happened and return to her labors? He never knew what to expect from her.

Her face scarlet, she cleared her throat and lifted her adorably determined chin. “You are most welcome, my lord.”

He raised a brow. “For what, my lady?”

“I have heard that cream does wonders for one’s complexion, and it seems the rumors are correct. Your skin appears much . . . creamier.”

Why I wrote Ainsley's story (from Mylissa Demeyere)

Did you know that every forty seconds 1 person dies due to suicide? That’s close to 800,000 worldwide, each year. There are indications that for each adult who dies of suicide there may have been more than 20 others attempting suicide. That’s an estimate of 16,000,000 attempted suicides worldwide amongst adults. (Source: The World Health Organization).

Five days shy of my sixteenth birthday, my father’s body was found after he had killed himself. Needless to say, it wasn’t the sweet sixteen it could have been.

That event had quite an impact on my life and how I decided to face the challenges I meet.

When I wrote The Songs of You and Me, I delved into Jackson’s past. He got to tell his side of how Ainsley’s choices affected him. I never felt I could leave her tale untold. Each story always has at least two sides to it.

Why does a person make such horrible choices as Ainsley did? What drives them to such selfishness? And does a person like Ainsley have it in her to redeem herself?

My dad made the choice not to fight and right the wrongs in his life. It not only ended his life; it impacted many other lives.

Ainsley’s story is my way of showing you what can happen when people who make mistakes decide to try and do better. Because everyone deserves a second chance to right the wrong and start over again.

This is Ainsley’s story of what happens when you choose to not give up.

I hope that whomever reads this, will realize that we all, at one point in our life need and deserve second chances. When we take those chances, and turn our lives around, miracles can happen. I have seen it firsthand and the stories that follow are beautiful. Not perfect, but definitely worth living.

Even when life seems dark, lost, and like there is no other way than ending it, there is ALWAYS another option.

To everyone who has ever felt like there was never another way, this story is for you. My dad didn’t take the other way, but I hope you will find help. Life isn’t always perfect, but it is a wonderful gift. Definitely worth fighting for.

I love love LOVE From Ash and Stone! If you are looking for a book that will make you cry, will make you sigh, will give you hope and healing then this is the book for you!! I certainly cried! I sighed at the end! And I felt hope in what the main character learned and it is never too late to change your heart even at the last minute! I felt the healing of the main character and in Angus as well!

I can’t say how much I loved this book. Angus is a good man in some bad times and he loves fiercely. Osanna is such a good friend who doesn’t know if she is a witch or not, even though she consults her bones on every topic daily! Gillis, Angus’s brother, is a mute and carries a deep secret with Angus that could ruin more of the spotty relationship they have with their father. And of course Margaret Grey, who once had a wonderful family and blames herself for their deaths because she snuck off to meet a boy when she was a teenager while her family’s home was burned and her family killed. There was nothing she could have done except die with them but she doesn’t see it that way. She was also assaulted by one of the Reiver’s that night. He bashed her head a few times and from that point on she could see other’s thoughts if she touched their skin. So of course her life is a sad and lonely one, in which she becomes hardened, stone, and avoids human touch. That is a very sad life indeed! SO her life is only to avenge their death and expects to die in the process. She is not afraid to die, maybe a little of the dying process but not of death itself. And so these people and the villains of the story make this book a great learning and healing process! Get your tissues out, you will need them. That is unless your heart too is made of stone!

The ending is perfect. It shows that life in these times isn’t ever really a happy ever after but close enough!

Most of the time, I don’t share quotes because they are what the characters have learned from and they are spoilers. But knowing that for the most part, the characters have learned things and these are what I like to share.

“We each walk our own way, and your fate is not my fate. Each step I take is my own choice and takes me down my own path. We all, each of us, lead ourselves to our own journey’s end.”

Ugh, well darn the other quotes, again, I can not share because they would be spoilers! There are some really good ones too!!!

Ok. I liked William or the new Viscount Farleigh from the beginning. He would use the wager’s vowel and repair his home and somehow fix the debts and the lives of the people he knew growing up when he finds out the debt his deceased father left to him. For he loves them, and the servants have loved William too! I’m not going to describe the wager here. You can read that. I just want you to know the main characters just make up the book. They are both very honorable and good people and want love in their lives and both think they aren’t going to find that. The wager is felt by Louisa to be upheld by honor and for William it will fix his father’s debts over time by marrying someone with clout and money. Who knew that this would work out in the end!

So, we learn that William is a stoic man with few words. We learn why he was like that. I can totally relate to him. But I also thought he was a man of hardly any words and how was he going to accomplish to win over Louisa like that! And how do you get to know anyone who won’t really talk. By the end of the book, you see him change and light up! He was more than just stoic. Louisa brought him to life. I was balling like a baby at the end of the book. I had to stop and get myself under control just so I could read the book from under the tears!!! That moment where his countenance glowed reminded me of the Keira Knightley version of Pride and Prejudice where Mr Darcy lights up when he introduces his sister to Elizabeth and he smiles! It just changed his whole look!

Than there is Louisa, who can babble on at times. William loved that quality in her. She loves to learn and wants to be more than just a mere female! Louisa’s family is very loving and close and her brothers tease Louisa relentlessly! I loved her family!

“And just like that, Louisa found herself betrothed”

I just love this story of finding love in a totally unconventional way!

Praise for My Brother's Bride

I found this book to be completely unexpected. I have read all the historical novels by this author and they have all been fun and delightful reads and even though this book had those elements as well, it was definitely more emotional than I was expecting... I loved Abby’s quiet strength and Morgan’s protectiveness. These two were great together. ~Melanie

My to-read list is long but Rachael is one author I always bump to the top and put all other books on hold for. She never disappoints so it's no surprise that this is another top-notch offering from Rachael. I loved these characters and cheered for them as they overcame obstacles and circumstances that tried to keep them apart. My Brother's Bride is an awesome and needed addition to the clean romance genre. So many authors pump out books so fast that often I find the quality of their work is lacking. Since I read for entertainment I'm able to forgive a lot and typically just overlook the shortcomings that are prevalent with so many books in this genre. Thankfully that is not the case with Rachael's books. I'm grateful for the time she takes to ensure she offers her readers quality books with original storylines that won't disappoint. ~ Kathy

How could anyone not fall in love with The Truth about Miss Ashbourne?! The debut author writes a beautifully enticing story of finding what it means to be part of a family, having a desire to do something good and become independent, and finding someone who makes you laugh and fall in love with. I know that was a very overly long sentence but I wanted to put it all out there first!

Miss Ashbourne has guarded her heart and lived only to be a governess with a desire to open a school for girls. A school to teach them all the things of the world that are only taught to boys. She is definitely a modern day woman born in the wrong era for her goals. She has always expected to be a spinster. She never thought she would have love or a husband. She does seem to attract the wrong kind of men though. To find out what I mean by that, you will have to read the book. She learns about her mother’s side of the family and where she thought she would not care for them, she finds their unconditional love and she returns it as well. I loved watching her grow.

What I most loved though, was watching the relationship with Julianna, Miss Ashbourne, and William grow. They have such an easy banter. I found myself smiling and giggling many times with their conversations! I was just a little frustrated that I couldn’t hear what was inside William’s head to know how he felt about her. It was about ⅔ the way in until I could see how he felt for her. It is in first person, so I understand we don’t get to know. But I really wanted to know where Julianna and William were headed. Because William was helping Julianna with her dream of starting her school for girls and well I didn’t want her to start it and leave William. I was totally swooning over him! He was her confidante, her saviour, her friend and teacher. He was a man worthy of Julianna and I would accept nothing less. So the long wait was killing me. I enjoyed every minute of it though.

Just to get a tiny glimpse of Julianna’s personality, Julianna has never ridden a horse and she was a little scared. William was giving her some riding lessons and this was her first encounter with a horse (whose name is Miranda)…

I took a fortifying breath and forced myself to walk to the mounting block. William close behind. I tried to picture Miranda as a great big armchair, one I just needed to climb upon. I failed. She was very clearly a horse.

If you love independent women, stories about love, family, leering men, stories with lots of bantering/teasing, stories that make you smile and laugh,balls, sewing, horses then this might be for you! It definitely was for me!!

After reading this book, I really want to go to Greece and take a cruise. The descriptions from the heat of the day to the color of the water is so alluring! Hopefully, if I ever get there, I will never have to have the suspense that the characters in the book had! But the romance from the place, I certainly wouldn’t mind experiencing!

Gracie is an easy going, unselfish, and kind person. She loves her job designing jewelry settings. She has been wanting to do that since she was a little girl. She works at a prestigious jewelers in New York.

Quinn is a junior partner at his insurance firm. His aunt Dorcas (who is a widow from a wealthy husband who created a cruise ship line) owns several pieces of jewelry that is insured with his company. He has a sort of girlfriend, who just doesn’t get the hint and is very selfish.

When Quinn’s aunt goes to Gracie to get a ring adjusted, she learns that the ring is a forgery and the gem inside is a fake as well. Dorcas does not want to call the police, she doesn’t want the publicity it brings and decides to have Quinn and his FBI friend Steve to find her jewelry. When it is discovered that many other of her jewelry is a fake as well, they add Gracie to their hunt to find the missing jewelry. I learned a lot about the jewelry world. It is really interesting! It’s also a little scary and I am glad to have my own costume jewelry and not worry about it!

Quinn and Gracie pose as an engaged couple and go to Greece to buy an engagement ring and see if they can figure out how the past three years someone has been replacing her jewelry that she had bought in Greece. So, the crew of them goes to Greece to do the same as she has done year after year and with FBI Steve to help, and find the thief and hope to find her missing jewelry. It’s not about the money for Dorcas but the sentiment that it has with her late husband and her love for him.

Quinn and Gracie had a very rocky start. But they find they are alot alike and their caring natures make it easy for them to find themselves falling for each other. Add in a little jealousy in the book also gives a little laughter to the romance as well.

The story is believable and the characters have depth to them. I liked that this book’s story line was kind of unique. At least to me, as I knew nothing about jewelry in the high society world. I also have never been on a cruise either.

Before they go on the trip to Greece, Quinn and Gracie would talk on the phone every night to learn more about each other to make their “cover” believable. I loved this little part of the conversation:

He said. “What are your top three movies?”
“Uh, Pride and Prejudice (as long as it’s the one with Colin Firth), While You Were Sleeping, and Tangled.”
“You’re a romantic.”
“Maybe,” Gracie said. “But have you ever considered what great ‘how to’ movies they are? They’ve got the answers every woman needs on how to avoid interacting with socially awkward men, how to drop and roll to escape an oncoming train, and how to wield a frying pan as a weapon. Those movies are full of all sorts of life skills”
Quinn laughed. “I’ll never watch them the same way again.”

And this conversation comes to life for them too, so you really need to read it to see how that happens!

If you love stories with the fake engaged couple, very expensive jewelry, fancy cars, cruises, Greece, swimming pools, jealousy, hit and run scenes, suspense, and falling in love with someone that you didn’t expect to then this might be for you!

I like stories around Christmas. I like getting excited for the season. I like reading short stories only around Christmas! And these four stories certainly got me excited for the season. Especially for snow (of which is a rarity since we moved to South Carolina).

I'm not so sure I like how Christopher started his courting to the love sick Keturah! Just sayin.... Good thing she is a kind and forgiving person. Now what he did, you will have to read for yourself.

And prepare to shed a few tears in the Love and Joy Come to You story! I loved the siblings names!

I don't like stories of jealousy. It is such an ugly emotion but sometimes it pushes us forward too!

IF you like short stories, competition, ice skating, snow, Christmas, wassailing, grief, joy, love, chemistry (as in chemical compounds), jealousy, games in love, coming to someone's rescue then this might be for you.

I have to say that I had a hard time getting into the book. My mind kept wandering and I wanted to give up. I also was wondering why I agreed to read the book at first. She is totally setting herself up for heartbreak! What would be happy about this kind of book?! But then at around ½ way through, I got into it because things started to fall into place and changed and I cried through most of the last 1/3rd of the book. Ugh, I had such a headache from crying!

There was a twist that I totally did not see coming. In fact, from the description on the back of the book I started trying to figure out how it would end and I was totally floored at what happened! It was not anywhere near how I imagined it would be. I must be as naive as the main character, Bess, was!

Bess works with her doctor father. Her mother died many years ago and Bess finds herself working in the capacity of many people. She is his cook, housekeeper, and his assistant. She never has any time for herself. Meanwhile, her father gets to sit down in the chair in the evenings and read. He has never hugged her, told her he appreciated all that she did or told her he loved her! He is respectful to others and to his patients but not to her. Bess is maybe a little naive on life. After all she has never been out in society as she has been by her father’s side since she was a child. All she has ever wanted was her father's love and approval. But she definitely knows her medicine!

So when this offer to be Hugh’s personal nurse comes up she takes it. She finds the situation empowering. Lady Buxtom is like a mother to her. Bess is kind and finds friends in the people who work in the home too! Bess feels free. She finds love with Hugh. His two friends from childhood are always there to help him with his personal needs and she becomes friends with them. Clive more so than the other!

There is heartbreak in the story because we do experience the death of Hugh and then there is great joy at the end. Sprinkled in with a twist and some surprises that I really really did not see coming! If I hadn’t of had a hard time getting into the book, and not originally felt the chemistry of her love I would have given it a 5 stars. But the ending, so made up for that! I want to say more but you really need to read it for yourself.

"No matter how rich or poor a child may be; no matter how few or many people they have in their lives who love and care for them-it is the love and discipline with which they are guided that makes their character. In my view, being spoiled means being raised with an attidtude of arrogance or entitlement, as opposed to understanding humility and equality and knowing that they need to have respect for all people and gratitude for all things. ..."

If you like stories with a twist, finding love not once but twice in a lifetime, stars, death, ugh I can’t give any more ideas away because they would be spoilers!!

So I thought this was going to be a triangle love story. But it was so much different than I thought! I am so naive sometimes! I knew that this was a suspense book but ….

I was just reading along and wondering who she would pick. My first thoughts are always the person first mentioned in a story. But I was really liking Evan and saw that they were really cute with each other.

As the story moves along, you start to get subtle hints of some trouble. Then later they aren’t so subtle as the story plot thickens. I realized my naivety not too long before our main character, Tia, did! Because Tia is just like me; a little naive. She trusts people and why shouldn’t she? Her friends are the whole police department!!

My heart began racing when the suspense part got started. Time was ticking and I needed to go to bed but also needed to find out how this would all end! Now I need to read about some of the characters in this book that had a book of their own!

I really can’t say a whole lot more without ruining it. So go and get it!

If you like athletic trainers, high school personnel, hiking, suspense, Paris, High heat in Arizona, Cold temps of cottages, classic antique trucks, police, security devices, stories that have just a little violence (can’t explain without giving the story away), chocolate croissants, the man of your dreams than this might be for you!
