In fact, nothing can be further from the truth. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;See, you can't manage time, any more than you can manage gravity, right?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But you can manage yourself and you can manage what gets your attention. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Meaning, what to give your attention to, determines what gets done, your attention is what you should focus on managing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have many different things going on, and when I need to get a LOT of work done, very fast, one of the most effective ways of doing this, is to use a timer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have a little white square digital timer sitting here on my desk right in front of me, that counts down time, backwards, from any length of time I set it to, down to zero.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So for example, when I'm writing my monthly offline newsletter, Seductive Selling, and I need to get stuff done, rapidly... I'll set that timer to 30 minutes.  Then, I literally won't move or get up or look at e-mail or surf the web or do anything other than write my newsletter, until that timer hits "zero," and the alarm goes off.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now don't get me wrong, that 30 minutes is like 30 minutes of hell.  No different than running or swimming for 30 minutes straight with literally no stopping for breath.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But what you're going to get done in that time-frame, will typically far surpass anything else you're going to get done in the same time-frame without using this timer technique.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Remember, the things that separate the student who graduates from college with a 3.8 average, and the student who graduates with a 3.5 average, are very subtle.  Certain ways of studying, certain methods of recalling information that would otherwise be undetectable by the untrained eye.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And business is no different.  It's these little subtle actions that differentiate the people who are incredibly prolific and successful, and the people who are doing "ok," but who never seem to be able to get things off the ground the way they have the potential to.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This "timer technique" is one of these subtleties, so I suggest you use it. It allows me to get multiple things done, quickly and quietly, and incredibly efficiently.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We're into our fourth year of publishing Seductive Selling, and it's never been late or sloppy.  And I've never put out an issue that was "a little under par."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And this technique is one of the many reasons why.  Don't believe me, though. Wouldn't you be much more excited about reading something that's not available anywhere else, and that's worth $97 dollars, as opposed to reading something with zero value?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Of course you would, right?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And see, unless you give whatever it is you're offering, a value... then your prospects will simply presume that value to be ZERO.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And you know the old expression, why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free, right?  Well, in this case, even though there's no "buy," per se -- there is an investment of time, which... for sharp people, is worth far more than money.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So make sure you're giving your gifts, bribes, widgets, and information, a value.  Otherwise you'll be up the creek without a paddle.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Moo.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now go sell something, Craig&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;P.S. First of all, you don't want "everybody" to respond to your ads, you only want those people who want what you're selling, and who are qualified to buy from you, to respond.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Me personally, I have the patience of a hungry saber-toothed tiger.  The last thing I want or need, is someone wasting my time.  But... your mileage may vary.  Perhaps you enjoy wasting your time, I don't know.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But if you don't, you're going to want to qualify or disqualify those buyers you do and do not want to come into your marketing funnel.  Very important.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Second, what you're competing for, really, isn't a name and contact information.  You're competing for your prospect's attention.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And attention is a very expensive commodity, especially today, when we're all so deluged with so much responsibility and so much tension.  Your prospects have too many things to do and not enough time to do them in... too many bills to pay and not enough money to pay them with.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So you'd better be making a pretty compelling offer if you want their attention -- even when you're giving something away that's free.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You'd better sell the reasons why they should respond to your free offer, by pointing out all the salacious benefits (Salacious -- that's a cool word, isn't it?) inside, and all the "what's in it for them?" things you can.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The bottom line is, if you're not making your offer worthy of your prospect's time, then rest assured, they won't either - free or not. I want something that has the following characteristics:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;* The camera's media format interfaces well with, and can easily be edited using iMovie '09&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;* I'll need to use an external mic so the camcorder has to have an input for this. Ideally, a wireless mic if possible (if this exists?)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;* Something that can store a fair amount of data inside or on an SD card, so I don't have to keep unloading what I've recorded every hour or so.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;* I want to be able to upload straight to my mac without having to process the media through any kind of intermediate software program.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;* As you can see, I'm not experienced here, so the camera should be easy to operate.  Most of these videos will be transferred to my web site so if there is some factor I need to know about or take into consideration when purchasing this camcorder, I'll need to do this, as well.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;* I do have a Flip Video camera now, but I'm going to be working on a project that involves me being mobile, specifically walking through and around the streets of New York City, and the flip doesn't give me the quickest zoom or the sound quality I need. What's wrong with my marketing?</title><description>I want to answer some questions that have been sent in for my Ask Me, Baby videos.  I'm out of the office so I don't have the ability to make a video today, but this'll still be good.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;First question comes from Joanna Beresford:  "Just found your site yesterday, wow, double awesome!!  Do you ever take interns or apprentices?"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Answer:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In a nutshell, no.  The truth is, I don't even take on many client projects simply because my personal publishing and consulting schedule is pretty full and quite lucrative, by design.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And besides, the few people who can afford to hire me, hire me because they want "me."  I'd never cheapen what I do by letting someone else do the work and then sort of "putting my finishing touches" on it.  That's just bad business ethics, and it's not how I roll.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Taking on loads of client projects and having a team of "little Craigs" working on them, excites me about as much as a blistering hemorrhoid.  On the surface (not to put a pun on words), this might look like it would make me more money, but it would actually cost me money.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The time it would take for me to manage all these projects, and all these copy cubs, is time I can otherwise be spending on my own projects.  Not to mention, I don't enjoy managing people -- I like doing my own thing and that's it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The best thing I can advise you to do, if you're interested in becoming an apprentice of mine, is to invest in my products, and do two things:  One, watch what I do... and two, take the advice I'm giving in this material, and apply it to your own business. The recession has made this difficult over the past few months.  To make it worse, our lead speaker is speaking at (and endorsing!) a competitive event.  How can my next marketing campaign fight back?  Many thanks indeed for considering my question, Amanda&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Answer:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You're welcome Amanda, but you're not going to like my answer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The truth is, in today's day and age where your prospects have more things demanding more of their attention than ever before... if all you're using to promote anything (especially a conference) is e-mail, than you're very unlikely to consistently succeed, unless you have a specific list of literally several hundred thousand names.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The key to your success, and frankly anyone's success when it comes to marketing, is first of all, making sure you're talking to the right people.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And the right people, of course, are those people who are interested in listening to what you have to sell them, and who can afford to pay for it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Second, you then have to show them why, above all the choices they have, they should be tickled pink to pick YOU.  How are you different? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What are you offering that makes you better, and why should they accept and be THRILLED with the value proposition you're making?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And lastly, why should they do anything about it, right now?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Make sense?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;See, the reason why you probably aren't going to like this answer is because when someone genuinely believes the answer to their question lies inside an e-mail they can send out, it's like thinking the answer to your health lies solely in drinking 8 glasses of water a day.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Marketing, like life, has many moving parts.  Those who can identify them and manage them, thrive. Our next meeting will be here in Tampa on Thursday and Friday, June 11th and 12th&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Applications are right here: &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.kingofcopy.com/maverickmarketer/mastermindapp.pdf"&gt;http://www.kingofcopy.com/maverickmarketer/mastermindapp.pdf&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And in case you missed it, here's a great story I heard last week - it talks about how I helped someone get a 15 times improvement in response:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There was a guy from North Carolina who attended my Ad Writing Workshop in January named Greg Poff. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Greg was a quiet silver-haired fellow who sat right next to me at the front of the table on my immediate right.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And I have no idea if "silver-haired" is politically correct or not, but I do know I'm as bald as a cue ball so I'd love what he has -- regardless of what it's called.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Anyway, at the time, lots of the other Workshop attendees told me privately they thought Greg was screwed.  (Well, the word you used wasn't screwed, but I'm trying to keep this PG and get it through the spam filter so I've got to keep the F word out of this.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That's because Gregg is selling fractional ownership shares of homes on the beach in North Carolina's Emerald Coast, priced anywhere from high 200's to $500K.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On top of this, Greg's knowledge of emotional direct-response marketing and writing sales copy is limited.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And in this economy, that's scary, isn't it?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Well... maybe... maybe not.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Never count Craig Garber out. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Down maybe... but never out.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After the Ad Writing workshop, I spent a lot of time working with Greg on his sales letter.  Initially, the one he sent me had loads of mistakes and wasn't going to be a successful or a compelling piece.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But Greg listened very closely to me, and he made ALL the recommendations I suggested.  And here's an e-mail he sent over to Anne the other day:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Craig,&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I wanted to pass along how we are doing using all of the ideas I picked up from your January Copywriting seminar.  As you know, we are trying to sell fractional ownership shares of vacation homes at the beach in one of the toughest markets imaginable.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the prior 18 months, the company’s marketing efforts had produced 80 inquiries, 2 tours, and no sales.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Using your ideas and guidance (especially your specific suggestions after reviewing my direct mail copy), we have received a better response than even we had hoped for.  The letter that was sent to the list of people who had rented houses on the island within the last 2 years pulled a 3% response rate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Even better, our conversion rate of inquiries to tours (which the experts told us would be about 10%) is 23%.  To date we have had 127 inquiries and have booked 29 Discovery Weekends (tours)!  I expect to book a a few more tours in the next week. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Closed sales should be next!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When we initially reviewed the copy with the realty firm (whose list we used), they questioned whether anyone would read a letter with this many words.  They expected limited response.  When the inquiries started coming in, they couldn’t believe it. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The realtor who received the initial calls told me she received many comments that the letter “was like someone was having a conversation with me”.  Your training has paid off!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Thanks for all of your support. This stuff really works. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Greg Poff"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;23% conversions versus an expected high of 10%...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;127 inquiries in one week versus 80 over 18 months...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;29 Discovery Weekends versus 2 over 18 months (15 times more!)...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These results are incredible, but I want to tell you something:  There isn't a person who's worked with me in the last 5 years, who hasn't made multiples of any investment they've made in me, over and over again -- as long as they listened to my suggestions and then took action.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I hope YOU are listening closely to this, and you realize the amount of money you're missing out on, by not having me work on your business on a regular and ongoing basis. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Appreciate that I rarely take on private copywriting clients any more.  It's just not the best use of my time -- by design.  The ONLY way to get this kind of attention and ongoing advice from me, is as a member of my Mastermind Group. You know me and that's not my deal.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is simply meant to get you to dig down deep inside and really question what you're looking to get out of your business, and out of your life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And you can't answer difficult questions like this, unless you're willing to ask them first, which is what I'm doing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Look, unless you're into wasting your time, there's a reason why you registered for this call last week. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And yet, you haven't taken action on anything.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Listen, the simple truth is, why most people fail has nothing to do with effort.  After all, loads of people are out there working hard, but few of them are actually making any REAL money at it. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;True?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Of course.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;People fail because of fear and misguided application of marketing strategies.  Nothing more. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I'm offering you a proven way of overcoming ANY marketing issues (I doubt your business is even remotely as "difficult" as Greg's) and in fact, you'll be short-cutting your way through them, instead, and getting your hands on the money as fast as humanly possible.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As to the fear part, well... that's up to you.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But I can tell you from experience, don't be afraid.  The short-term pain of overcoming any fear and apprehension you have is far less than the long-term pain of living with it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And by the way, once you do your first mailing, or once you make your first dollar, that fear vanishes like smoke off a fire -- never to be seen or heard from, ever again.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Just ask Greg Poff, and just ask Bill Parlaman -- who was also at the Workshop.  Bill's just been accepted into my Mastermind Group and he's thrilled.  He just sent me a note that he made $12,961 in a two-hour teleseminar as a result of some strategies we worked on together. Baby I got it.  What you need?  Don't matter...</title><description>With little exception, no one "needs" any of the crap you or me or anyone else is selling.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I don't need the next pair of Nike's I'm going to buy this week, I want them.  In fact, I could just as easy spend one-fourth and get a pair of old Chuck Connors Converse trainers, but I WANT the Nike's.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All too often, you forget why your prospects are really buying whatever it is you got.  (nice English, I know)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;See, people buy things because they want them, not because they need them.  No one NEEDS Mickey D's, and you don't need to be a rocket scientist to know this.  And no one NEEDS to eat chicken wings at Hooters, either. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And so on.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Get my point?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;People buy things they want to buy, and usually they want things because of some kind of momentary or long-term emotional thrills it gives them to own whatever it is you're selling.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For instance, wearing sneakers that feel comfortable and look good makes me feel a sense of pride about myself when I'm wearing them.  It also sends out a signal that tells people I am concerned how I look and maybe even in the kind of (perceived) shape I'm in -- which is a vanity emotional pull.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And see, this is why most inventors are broke.  They fall in love with an invention because of what the invention can do for humanity, when they should be thinking "Gee, is this what my prospects want?" &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Portable machines that remove grease from hamburgers and fast food... tanning lotion that minimizes the amount of the sun's damage to your skin, but also reduces the intensity of your tan... no one wants these things.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;People want sloppy greasy burgers that taste good, and they want to lay out under the sun and become bronze Gods and Goddesses. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It all starts with what your prospect wants.  Keep that in mind the next time you're looking to sell or market something.  How you feel about what you're selling is as irrelevant as the price of phlegm on the open market. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How your prospects feel is everything.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now go sell something, Craig&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;P.S. As Duke Ellington once said, "Without a deadline baby, I wouldn't do nothing."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And this is something most people forget about when it comes to their marketing.  Most ads lack a compelling reason your prospects should take action NOW, not later.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And this kills you.  Because getting someone to take action is very difficult, in spite of what you might like to believe.  And without creating this same military-like sense of urgency in your marketing, you're facing an uphill battle.  It's you against your prospect's inertia.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You simply must have a compelling offer that makes your prospects salivate in some way, and you've got to create a sense of urgency (using consequences, the same way the military does), to overcome your buyers inherent lethargy and skepticism.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Been in business 25 years" doesn't do this, and neither does "Call 555-1212 today."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If the military said "I urge you to get up early tomorrow so you can accomplish a lot," rest assured everyone would sleep in.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So wake your prospects up and give them a reason to get moving and they will.  Let them sleep in, and they'll do this, as well.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Semper fi, baby... Semper fi.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now go sell something, Craig&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;P.S. (Well, the word you used wasn't screwed, but I'm trying to keep this PG and get it through the spam filter so I've got to keep the F word out of this.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That's because Gregg is selling fractional ownership shares of homes on the beach in North Carolina's Emerald Coast, priced anywhere from high 200's to $500K.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On top of this, Greg's knowledge of emotional direct-response marketing and writing sales copy is limited.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And in this economy, that's scary, isn't it?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Well... maybe... maybe not.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Never count Craig Garber out. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Down maybe... but never out.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After the Ad Writing workshop, I spent a lot of time working with Greg on his sales letter.  Initially, the one he sent me had loads of mistakes and wasn't going to be a successful or a compelling piece.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But Greg listened very closely to me, and he made ALL the recommendations I suggested.  And here's an e-mail he sent over to Anne the other day:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Craig,&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I wanted to pass along how we are doing using all of the ideas I picked up from your January Copywriting seminar.  As you know, we are trying to sell fractional ownership shares of vacation homes at the beach in one of the toughest markets imaginable.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the prior 18 months, the company’s marketing efforts had produced 80 inquiries, 2 tours, and no sales.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Using your ideas and guidance (especially your specific suggestions after reviewing my direct mail copy), we have received a better response than even we had hoped for.  The letter that was sent to the list of people who had rented houses on the island within the last 2 years pulled a 3% response rate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Even better, our conversion rate of inquiries to tours (which the experts told us would be about 10%) is 23%.  To date we have had 127 inquiries and have booked 29 Discovery Weekends (tours)!  I expect to book a a few more tours in the next week. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Closed sales should be next!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When we initially reviewed the copy with the realty firm (whose list we used), they questioned whether anyone would read a letter with this many words.  They expected limited response.  When the inquiries started coming in, they couldn’t believe it. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The realtor who received the initial calls told me she received many comments that the letter “was like someone was having a conversation with me”.  Your training has paid off!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Thanks for all of your support. This stuff really works. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Greg Poff"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;23% conversions versus an expected high of 10%...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;127 inquiries in one week versus 80 over 18 months...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;29 Discovery Weekends versus 2 over 18 months (15 times more!)...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These results are incredible, but I want to tell you something:  There isn't a person who's worked with me in the last 5 years, who hasn't made multiples of any investment they've made in me, over and over again -- as long as they listened to my suggestions and then took action.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I hope YOU are listening closely to this, and you realize the amount of money you're missing out on, by not having me work on your business on a regular and ongoing basis. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Appreciate that I rarely take on private copywriting clients any more.  It's just not the best use of my time -- by design.  The ONLY way to get this kind of attention and ongoing advice from me, is as a member of my Mastermind Group. You know me and that's not my deal.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is simply meant to get you to dig down deep inside and really question what you're looking to get out of your business, and out of your life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And you can't answer difficult questions like this, unless you're willing to ask them first, which is what I'm doing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Look, unless you're into wasting your time, there's a reason why you registered for this call last week. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And yet, you haven't taken action on anything.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Listen, the simple truth is, why most people fail has nothing to do with effort.  After all, loads of people are out there working hard, but few of them are actually making any REAL money at it. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;True?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Of course.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;People fail because of fear and misguided application of marketing strategies.  Nothing more. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I'm offering you a proven way of overcoming ANY marketing issues (I doubt your business is even remotely as "difficult" as Greg's) and in fact, you'll be short-cutting your way through them, instead, and getting your hands on the money as fast as humanly possible.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As to the fear part, well... that's up to you.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But I can tell you from experience, don't be afraid.  The short-term pain of overcoming any fear and apprehension you have is far less than the long-term pain of living with it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And by the way, once you do your first mailing, or once you make your first dollar, that fear vanishes like smoke off a fire -- never to be seen or heard from, ever again.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Just ask Greg Poff, and just ask Bill Parlaman -- who was also at the Workshop. And it compels you to do something about it very quickly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is something trial lawyers know and it's how they get people to make such dramatic efforts at doing things like clearing their name or defending their honor.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It's a very powerful tactic.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And in this case, it's no different.  Your immediate reaction to these e-mails is to go and bid more, even if you really aren't so hot for whatever the item is -- simply to defend your honor.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After you get that e-mail you almost feel like you failed at something, so your gut reaction is to "succeed," and in this case, you succeed by bidding higher and higher.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These are the little things that make e-bay so successful.  And they all revolve around understanding human nature and knowing what makes people "tick."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And this, ultimately, is the difference between great and incredible, when it comes to your selling success.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Or not.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now go sell something, Craig&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;P.S. So make sure you watch for tomorrow's e-mail and hop on this right away.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now for today's message...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There's a great remedy for hiccups I've used for years, and I'll tell you about it in just a minute.  But first let's talk about copywriting hiccups.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are a couple of specific things that get in your way when you're writing, that you must overcome if you want to create compelling copy that's going to sell.  And here's how to conquer these hiccups.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Unplug.  Get rid of any pre-conceived notions about things you can and can't say, and instead, just write.  Writing, whether you know it or not, is like any other creative art.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Could you imagine a sculptor or a sketch artist or a musician, sitting down to create, with all these do's and don'ts lingering in the back of their mind?  How much could the end result of this possibly move you?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How compelling can a piece of art developed under these constraints possibly be?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Right?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So unplug and let loose when you're writing.  Don't hold back.  Let it all out and then clean it up later when you edit.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. Be excited!  Nothing turns your prospects on, more than energy and enthusiasm, and nothing repels them more than lethargy and boredom.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Passion is contagious, so make sure you're excited about what you're doing because it comes across, for sure... believe me.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Just think about how pumped up you get when you meet someone who's energetic!  Well, this same energy comes across when you write, so keep that in mind.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;O.K.?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Good, now here's that remedy for hiccups.  Next time you get them, try swallowing a teaspoon of vinegar.  I have been doing this for years, on those rare times when I do get the hiccups, and it's never failed me yet.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have no idea why this works, nor am I interested, but it's as reliable as a Swiss watch, so try it next time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;See, you get a little bit of everything here in the Kingdom.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now go sell something, Craig&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;P.S. Hopkins, for today's tip.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Pay close attention to what he says, because this is one of the most important lessons about writing, and about selling, you can ever master.  Lucky for me, I learned it early on and I worked very hard to master it, and it's made me a small fortune.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here goes:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In "My Life In Advertising," Hopkins, said, "I know of nothing more ridiculous than gray-haired boards of directors deciding on what housewives want."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hopkins, who wrote this book 82 years ago in 1927,  was one of the greatest copywriters and marketers of all times.  To me, his strength lied in his ability to talk to the "common" man, which... whether you know it or not, is you and me and all of us.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I've never heard this said any better than "Let me digress here to say that the road to success lies through ordinary people.  They form the vast majority.  The man who knows them and is one of them stands the vastly better chance...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now college men come to us by the hundreds and say, "We have education, we have literary style."  I say to them that both of these things are handicaps.  The great majority of men and women cannot appreciate literary style... Any appeal which seems to come from a higher class arouses their resentment.  Any dictation is abhorrent to us all.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We are seeking in advertising, men with the impulses of the majority..."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So don't worry about how sophisticated you are or how highbrow you want to appear to be.  Focus on how ordinary you are, instead.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And then just let your prospects know. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And then you will be thrilled with the results.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now go sell something, Craig&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;P.S.
