You’ve probably heard about “Oriented” by now. It’s the 89 minute, charmingly entertaining peek into the real lives of three gay Palestinians who found the courage to “come out” while living in Tel Aviv.

I sat down for a chat with the film’s straight, Jewish director, Jake Witzenfeld. We talked about how political homosexuality in the face of conflict can be, what Jake learned about himself while directing it, and I got some insight into the creative process he went through along the way.

It’s rare to find an English speaker in Israel who hasn’t heard of the Facebook group Secret Tel Aviv or the man behind it, Jonny Stark. Jonny joined me on Kipp Kong to talk about how he turned a group of a few friends into an over 107,000 member group and Tel Aviv’s online cultural center… if you’re an English speaker, of course.

Jonny and I talked about how and why he created the page, what they’re up to now, cyber bullying, and all the drama he’s had to face for managing a group that he says is meant mainly to help internationals settle in Israel.

Whenever I tell someone I was raised as a Messianic Jew, they usually have a whole spectrum of questions, and I’m happy to answer. Yes, Messianic Jews are Jews who believe in Jesus. No, it’s not the same thing as Jews for Jesus. Yes, I was circumcized. No, my family didn’t celebrate Christmas…

Now I’m secular. I no longer hold to the religious doctrines my parents taught me, but I still really enjoy dialoguing about it. For me my talk with Eli was like rehashing old times and getting to hear how the faith has been managing without me
