I'm only a few years behind you, so I'm pretty close to that same current. Even the people I know who have engineering-type instincts don't make their own websites—don't know how, don't care how. I wouldn't expect people without that kind of trained insight or approach to problems to figure it out either. Facebook was nice because it did all the heavy lifting involved in posting, and it found people you knew, and photos were easy, and it seemed mobile in a native way, and so on.

Anyway, all this said, I do wish other people would make their own websites or blogs. It's not as useful or critical as learning to make your own food, but it is close to a bedrock skill in the world we live in now. I feel like blogs/websites are coming back (could be confirmation bias) but it's still going to be missing the majority of people.
