Again Kitecinema was in Scheveningen to get a shitload of footage from many dutch riders at the Dutch Kiteboarding Championships 2009.

It’s time for the final riders movie, this time it’s with Kevin Langeree,the Dutch Champion of the NK kite 2009.

Short documentary film about kite surfing, kite boarding, about one club which name is “Get trauma”.

The KPWT Superkite Brasil has hosted 4 disciplines over the 6 days of competition and seen some superb action on the water.

This morning started early on the wave spot, Pico das Almas to finish the double elimination competition.
The wind insisted the riders go out on their 9meter kites and the waves were a little choppy.

This didn’t stop Jesse Richman (HAW, CABRINHA)! He looked pumped today and wanted to push hard for his overall ranking in this discipline and hopefully take the title for 2009.

He defeated three Brazilians, Bruno Bordovsky (BRA, RRD), Ian Owczarzaw (BRA, Mormaii) and took second place from Gustavo Foerster (BRA, NAISH) to challenge Jan Marcos Riveras (DOM REP, STARKITES) for the top spot on the podium. He fought all the way with smooth bottom turns, good airs and pushed hard at the lip to take Jan Marcos to another final.
Jan Marcos did not want to let his title go here in Brazil after winning this event in 2008 and took Jesse all the way. He looked to settle himself nicely and selected some good waves to gather enough score and edged Jesse back down to the second spot on the podium.

The ladies competition saw Jalou Langeree (HOL, NAISH) against Gisela Pulido (SPA, AIRUSH) for the podium spot. Jalou rode well and edged Gisela off the podium to take on Kirsty Jones (UK, NORTH) for second position.
Kirsty was not going to give her spot away to easily and showed why she is the World Champion in this discipline ending Jalou’s hopes.
Kirsty went on to challenge Kari Schibevaag (NOR, OZONE). The wind had dropped off a little and both riders did their best to score as much as possible. The judges were scoring the 2 best waves over 8minute heats and Kari selected well. She held onto her top spot on the podium and has now really put herself in a great position to challenge Kirsty for the overall title in this discipline.

The race director then rushed those who were competing in the course racing discipline back to Duro beach. A skippers meeting was held at 12h00 for the 22 riders that were competing here in Brazil. The course was set out in a simple triangle formation with the start and finish at the same buoy.
3 races were completed before 3pm.

Conditions were not ideal for racing as it was quite choppy, but the wind was at a good speed averaging 18 knots and the riders pushed themselves as hard as they could.

Some megastar riders were in the entry list and showed the locals what an exciting discipline racing is. Bruno Sroka (FRA, CABRINHA), Lukasz Ceran (POL, GAASTRA), Abel Lago (SPA, RRD), Kari Schibevaag (NOR, OZONE), Nayara Licariao (BRA, BEST) were amongst those who took to the course.

Wind on the very last day brought finally results for the speed kiteboarders in Dungarvan, Ireland. There was just enough time to complete a few fast runs along the speedstrip, with the fastest speed of the event set by Dave Williams (GBR, Best) at 44.2 knots over 250m.

After two rounds completed, Jason McCaffrey (GBR, Cabrinha) and Jemma Grobbelaar (GBR, Flexifoil) were on top in the end of a week of very varying conditions..

The event came to an end with the price giving ceremony held in the Dungarvan Harbour Yacht Club, and a party that is lasting until the late night.

The double elimination was the call for the day and was held on Durobeach. Skippers meeting began at 08h00 and conditions were looking strong for the day.
Wind was averaging 22 knots and the water was quite choppy, but the waves gave the riders a good chance to kick off and perform some high and powerful tricks.

The heats began just before 09h00 and the race director ran 7minute heats, with 3minute transitions.
Antoine Auriol (FRA, KITELOOSE) looked good today and progressed through 3 heats to meet Eli Zarka (ISR, F-ONE), who was looking in top form himself! Zarka progressed to find himself against a determined Ariel Corniel (DOM REP, OZONE) in a super heat, to the delight of the locals on the beach.

Another great heat was Petr Tyushkevich (RUS, FLEXIFOIL), who is sitting on the top of the freestyle rankings and the second place, Leander Vyvey (BEL, JN). This result will play a huge role in the top positions for the freestyle this year and both riders showed why they were there!
Both riders had a great heat, but unfortunately there was only space for one to progress and today it was Leander’s, meeting Tomas Teixeira (BRA, RRD) in the next round.

Leander:” My heat against Tomas was loads of fun! I did a super front mobe pass and thought I had a good heat. I really like Tomas’s style and it was a pleasure to ride with him in Cumbuco.”

Tomas went through Michael Shitzhofer (AUS, JN), who broke his leash during his heat and was looking strong up until then. Unfortunately for Michael, this was not his day and he had to setle for 4th place here in Cumbuco.

The final was set and Jesse Richman (HAW, CABRINHA) faced the local rider, Evandro Da Silva (BRA, RRD). It was a well-contested heat, with both riders pushing the limits to get as high and powerful as possible! The crowd was screaming for their local champion and he didn’t disappoint them, taking the double elimination title here in Brazil!

The talk of the women was the young rider, Karolina Winkowska (POL, NAISH) who was placed second after the single elimination. She fought off the challenge of Gisela Pulido (SPA, AIRUSH) and went on to push Susi Mai (GER, CABRINHA) to her limits for the top spot.
She won the first heat against Susi and forced her into another great final heat. She went on to take the Women’s freestyle title here in Cumbuco and her first on the KPWT. Congratulations!

Karolina: “ I was so tired after having to fight through 3 heats, but I am so happy and excited with this result!”

Tomorrow will be a morning for waves and to finish the double elimination, before heading back to Duro beach for the course racing.

Never turn to the darkside! – Episode 4 of the Copenhagen Boarding series.

Skippers meeting began day four at 08h30 at the Wave spot, Pico das Almas. The wave criteria and how the riders will be judged, was clearly illustrated by the race director and head judge before any heats took to the water.

The single elimination commenced and the quarterfinal heat between Cameron Dietrich (HAW, CABRINHA) and Gustavo Foerster (BRA, NAISH) started the day.

Conditions were better than the previous day and the wave sets were peaking at 1.5 meters.
The wind was stronger and averaging around 22 knots and most riders were out on their 9meter kites. The swell was still a bit messy and the current looked to be quite strong, but the riders proved their class in demonstrating some superb wave riding and put on a great show.

The single elimination final was between the local Foerster, who had knocked out Dietrich and Jesse Richman (HAW, CABRINHA) on his way to meet the extravagant, Jan Marcos Riveras (DOM REP, STARKITES). Unfortunately for the local, Riveras looked determined to repeat his 2008 victory here in Cumbuco. His selection of waves was excellent today and showed a good variety in his moves on the wave. He performed good aerial manoeuvres, strong turns in the critical section and showed why he is a serious competitor for the 2009 Wave Master title.

Another great heat was the ladies’ final between Kirsty Jones (UK, NORTH) and Kari Schibevaag (NOR, OZONE). Kari has really been working hard at her Wave Riding and it is showing in her performances this year. She is moving well on the waves and seems to be much more confident in her turns. Kari won the heat and took the Wave Master single elimination title here in Cumbuco.

The race director then went straight to the double elimination and started 8minute heats with 3minute transmissions.

The wind was still blowing nicely and the swell had picked up a little with the tide coming in.
It was a very interesting day in the double elimination with a few riders who had not done well in the single, but looked to blast through the double. Mitu Monteiro (CV, F-ONE) performed well after losing out early in the single and managed to fight his way through 4 heats and ended up in 7th place. Abel Lago (SPA, RRD) did well to progress through his heat and found Cameron Dietrich (HAW, CABRINHA) in the next round. Both riders adjusted well to the conditions and did their best to perform as many turns and show as much variety on the waves as possible.

Cameron ended Abel’s hope of reaching the podium and went through to the next heat to face a fiery Brazilian, Bruno Bordovsky (BRA, RRD). Bordovsky went on to defeat Cameron, Victor Adamo (BRA, NAISH) to meet Jesse Richman for 4th place. Unfortunately the sun had set and the day was called off just after 17h30 and no further results were possible.

Tomorrow is a day for the Freestyle Double Elimination competition to be held at Duro Beach. Skippers meeting will start at 08h00 and all the riders are looking to show off their talent at the internationally renowned spot.

Ben Wilson’s new movie – “Shades of Green”

The movie features Ben Wilson, Reo Stevens, Ian Alldredge and Bear Karry in Indonesia doing what they do – surfing and kiting.

The four of them jumped on a serious swell and some early season wind, resulting in some great kitesurfing barrels. The trip was well documented and the three day swell that the boys lucked into has been accumulated into a 35 minute long movie.

Day 3 on the KPWT SUPERKITE here in Brazil and as to be expected, the wind was at a good 20 knots. After a spectacular day yesterday for the freestyle riders at the lagoon, today was a day for Waves at the spot, Pico das Almas.

Abel Lago (SPA, RRD): “Every time I come to Brazil I love it! The weather is super, the wind is great and the waves are really good so I am happy. This is a true paradise for kiteboarding.”

Conditions were a little choppy, but the waves were pushing 1 meter on the low tide in the morning.
The riders were certainly making the most out of the conditions on offer and doing their best in selecting the finest waves and turning as much as possible.

The race director ran 10 minute heats with 3 minute intermissions and the riders will be scored on their 2 best waves.

A big result early on was the elimination of the 2008 Wave Master World Champion, Mitu Monteiro (CV, F-ONE) by the local rider Ian Owczarzaw (BRA, MORMAII). He is a powerful rider and performed some strong turns, to the delight of the locals on the beach.

Kirsty Jones (UK, NORTH) looked good in her heat against Olga Fita (SPA, FLEXIFOIL) and progressed to the semi final to face Gisela Pulido (SPA, AIRUSH).

A great heat today was in the second round between Abel Lago (2007 Wave Master Champion) and Eli Zarka (ISR, F-ONE). Both were riding the conditions excellently and were turning as hard as possible on the smaller waves. Abel tried a few variations on the waves, with a superb air to reverse, but Eli had a strong heat and scored high on his waves with good selection in these variable conditions, edging Abel out of the single elimination.

The tied came in around 2pm and brought with it some waves to give the riders a little more to work with. Unfortunately the wind was not accommodating and looked to be dropping off a little. It eventually dropped below competition standards and had turned on-shore around 4pm.

The race director stopped the quarterfinal heat between Cameron Dietrich (HAW, CABRINHA) and Gustavo Foerster (BRA, NAISH). This will continue tomorrow and the Wave riders will get another day to run their heats and hopefully finish the double elimination before the end of the day.
