Only in New Mexico: When a Coachwhip Snake Tries to Move In

Remember when we were building our NM dream home and I told you there are snakes in the trees? Well, word has gotten out to the Red Racers and they are pissed. They're actively trying to break into our house to kill me.

There is a particular kind of optimism required to build your dream home in the high desert mountains of New Mexico. Not ordinary optimism. Delusional optimism. The kind where you stand on your future property, gaze dramatically toward the Sandia mountains, and say things like: I am one with nature. Inner peace. And, because I'm a Seinfeld fan, serenity now.

Nature hears me. Nature enjoys plotting practical jokes.

Most days, living up here between Albuquerque and Santa Fe is like a dream. Quiet mornings. Huge skies. Baby deer frolicking. It's very Snow White. Our home is the perfect setting to write, plan Airstream trips, and sit in the foyer pretending I am the sort of person who enjoys "the outdoors." We are not really homeowners, just temporary boondockers on the landscape. A blip on the timeline.

On a recent, rare day off from work, I was soaking up the sunshine in our foyer, 1,000 Chrome tabs open and not even being bothered by my ADHD, when the movement of something red caught my eye. Aggressive movement. What the heck?

Staring directly through the double-pane glass at me was an absolutely enormous snake. It was a massive Western Coachwhip, commonly known around here as a Red Racer. I was right to be afraid.

He refused to peacefully slither by, repeatedly thrashing his body against our window. Look at this creepy, judgmental face staring right back at the camera from his hideout, judging my soul:

Sorry for the language used in my YouTube videos. Look into his beady snake eyes though, staring me down, and his forked tongue catching my scent. (Yes, smelling through his tongue. Snakes are wild!) You'd have used questionable language too.

It is one thing to see a snake in your yard. It is a completely different mental crisis to make prolonged, uninterrupted eye contact with six-feet of cold-blooded hatred. Because coachwhips have incredible eyesight, he wasn’t just mindlessly bumping into the window—he was actively looking at me, tracking my movements, and openly judging my panic. It had not been disclosed to me that we were purchasing property in Jurassic Park.

We had accidentally set up a premium snake buffet right on our entryway. The charming, cottage-core finch nest tucked inside our front-door wreath? To us, it was lovely seasonal decor. To this guy, it was a vertical brunch destination with patio views. He was hunting those eggs, and my face just happened to be blocking the view.

Right in the middle of this standoff, my phone buzzed. A UPS notification: a package had just been dropped off down at the gate.

Normally, walking down the driveway is a mindless, two-minute chore. Except this specific package contained my new pomegranate appetizer plates from Frontgate. They're white porcelain with a stunning band of golden fruit, artfully arranged around the border. Strategically, I knew I should stay inside. Emotionally, I could not leave high-end hosting pieces vulnerable at the property line. If my reconnaissance mission went south, the archaeologists eventually digging up my skeleton would at least know that my death was not in vain. I died protecting luxury dinnerware.

But as I looked back at the front porch, the stakes suddenly felt a lot higher than upscale pottery. We had been monitoring those fragile little finch eggs in the wreath for weeks, waiting for them to finally hatch. For reference, here is what this intruder was trying to turn into breakfast—last year’s batch of baby birds, affectionately known as the Lil' Chirps:

I couldn't let him eat the birds. But I also couldn't bring myself to open the front door and confront a snake that had just proven it could climb glass. My courage evaporated. I needed a tactical retreat, so I decided to slip out through the garage instead.

One second: giant snake. Next second: gone. I watched him slide beneath the patio table with the same utter disbelief usually reserved for old David Copperfield specials. He disappeared completely under that tablecloth.

I walked into our garage, reached out to hit the wall button to open the bay doors, and absolutely screamed.

Hanging right beside the button was a snakeskin.

To be fair, this exact skin has been there since our very first month in the house, when we found the shed remnant by the guest door. It has basically become part of the architecture, like Derek's home brew setup, Derek's metalshop, and whatever woodworking experiment is currently being preserved beneath a protective layer of dust. Usually, I don't even see it. But thanks to our home intruder, it scared the heck out of me.

By the time I finally made it out to the driveway, my paranoia was running the show. I realized I couldn’t see well enough to defend myself, which wouldn't do at all because you know this snake is not above mugging the blind. I went back inside and grabbed my glasses. Armed with 20/20 vision, I resumed my expedition with the stiff, cautious gait of someone trying not to startle a landmine. Was he going to attack me from the ground? Was he going to fling himself directly at my face, slingshot style, from the trees??

When I got to the gate, I was genuinely afraid to pick up the package. Was the snake hiding under the box? I half-expected him to pop out and hand-deliver the plates himself. He doesn't even have hands! I snatched the package, scrambled back up the driveway, and immediately hit a brand-new wave of panic as I walked back toward the garage: I’d left the door wide open the entire time.

Our garage is packed with junk and tools. Yes, those are the same thing, depending on my mood when asked. Our garage is a labyrinth of junk and tools and, now, obviously a menacing snake.

Do Red Racer Snakes Shake Their Tails Like Rattlesnakes?

I know coachwhip enthusiasts (you lovable freaks) are reading this right now yelling, "He's just a harmless, curious neighbor!" But I respectfully disagree. We've already seen indisputable video proof that this Red Racer hates me.

The real problem with coachwhips is their speed. They are among the fastest snakes in North America, capable of hitting four miles per hour. That sounds modest on paper, but when a slender, six-foot serpent launches itself across concrete, it looks like a possessed jump rope. He moves so fast that he can simultaneously attack me on the front patio and the back patio. Nowhere is safe.

And the second they stop moving? They perform a complete magic trick of instant invisibility.

To make matters worse, they engage in psychological warfare. When a non-venomous coachwhip gets cornered or defensive, it will rapidly vibrate its tail against dry leaves, dirt, or patio floors. It creates a fast, aggressive clicking sound that perfectly mimics a rattlesnake—a trick designed to make you lose your mind.

To give you an idea of the sheer scale of our home intruder, here he is winding his way across and through our outdoor furniture, touching as much as possible to establish dominance, while also staring me down:

Quick Facts: Is the Western Coachwhip Dangerous?

If you landed here after frantically Googling massive pink snake in New Mexico, here is the fast breakdown of what you actually need to know:

Are they venomous? No. Red Racers are completely non-venomous. They rely on sheer speed and agility to capture prey, not poison or constriction.
Will they chase you? Supposedly no. Despite local folklore, they do not vengefully chase humans down as they run screaming into the desert. These snakes are high-strung and will strike if cornered, but their primary instinct is to sprint away.
Do they eat rattlesnakes? Yes! 5 points for Team Coachwhip! Coachwhips are voracious, opportunistic predators. Their diet includes mice, lizards, birds, eggs, and even venomous rattlesnakes.
Do they commit crimes? Derek says no. Let me know if you're heard otherwise though. I think they're just good at not getting caught.
Are they good to have around? Technically, yes. They provide incredible natural pest control, even better than the Jack Russell Terriers we used to have. I just wish they wouldn't be so icky with their presence, darting around like untrustworthy ninjas. They'd ideally wear little collars with bells. So far though, I've been unable to figure out a way to make this happen.

What the Future Looks Like: Me and The Snake Forever

The snake eventually moved on. Ha, ha, no.

Our spooky friend disappeared into the yard. He's so (ssssso? He is a snake, after all) fast that he could be anywhere. Somewhere out there on our property exists a creature capable of climbing glass, sprinting at athletic speeds despite a lack of legs, mimicking a rattlesnake, and making direct, judgmental eye contact through windows. Every time I open a door might be the final time.

Best NM Restaurants

New Mexico food is its own category. It's not Tex-Mex. It's not Southwest fusion. It's green chile on everything, sopapillas with honey, and the best green chile cheeseburgers in the world. Here are our favorites:

Seasons Rotisserie & Grill (Old Town ABQ) — This is our all-time favorite for everything: happy hour, special meals, and every visit in between. It is located specifically in Old Town (not to be confused with the similarly named spot near Coronado Mall—they are completely unrelated). Chef Jared Ward and his passionate team are truly talented. Plus, the Seasons rooftop is the best spot to enjoy the best green chile cocktail.
M’Tucci’s Italian (Westside) — We love their Wednesday night Prix Fixe dinner. It is an incredible three-course meal with wine pairings for only $30, happening every Wednesday starting at 5:00 PM at their Coors & Montaño location. It’s probably the best dining value in the state.
Slate Street Cafe (Albuquerque, NM) — Our go-to neighborhood spot. It has a modern, airy feel that just makes you glad to live in Albuquerque. Great for a casual lunch or a wine-focused happy hour.
Refinery 14 (Madrid, NM) — A fun, artsy destination on the Turquoise Trail. It’s the perfect place to grab a meal on the patio and soak in the unique vibe of Madrid. Definitely worth the scenic drive.
Trail Rider Pizza (Cedar Crest, NM) — A local staple in the East Mountains. Whether you’re stopping in after a hike or just driving through, it’s a great spot for reliable, locally-loved food in a relaxed mountain setting.
The Owl Bar & Cafe (San Antonio, NM) — A legendary stop for green chile cheeseburgers that has been around since 1945. It’s a piece of New Mexico history that still delivers on flavor.

New Mexico's food and wine event scene is genuinely excellent — and underrated. We've attended events across the country and NM punches well above its weight. Do not skip these:

Santa Fe Wine & Chile Fiesta (Santa Fe) — A week-long celebration of Santa Fe's culinary artistry and world-class wines. The Grand Tasting is the crown jewel.
New Mexico Brew Fest (Albuquerque) — We've attended beer festivals all over the country. This one is the best, hands down.
Green Chile Cheeseburger Smackdown (Santa Fe) — 24 contenders. One winner. You eat 7 burgers in 3 hours and have no regrets.
Souper Bowl (Santa Fe) — 24 chefs, soup showdown, January in Santa Fe. Warm your soul.
Lavender in the Village (Los Ranchos/Albuquerque) — The largest lavender festival in the Southwest, every July. Bring a hat.

If you only make it to one event this year, make it a premier NM Wine Festival! With gourmet food and all-inclusive activities, like horseback riding, it's always an amazing time.

Best Places to Take Out-of-State Guests

Corrales Wine Loop (Corrales) — Small NM wineries in a historic village. Afternoon drive, multiple tastings, zero pretension.
Canyon Road (Santa Fe) — A mile of galleries, courtyards, and art. Even non-art people love it.
Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs (Ojo Caliente) — Hot springs with a view. Reserve a private pool and stay for the sunset.
Tent Rocks (Cochiti) — Volcanic rock formations that look like a different planet. Easy hike, dramatic payoff. Once you do this, you'll want more - luckily there's another slot canyon to explore near Las Cruces, NM.
Madrid, NM — A ghost town turned artist colony on the Turquoise Trail. Stop for a meal at Mine Shaft Tavern or Refinery 14 on your way through.

Airstream Pro-Tips: New Mexico Logistics

Towing & Terrain

The Southern Rockies and Black Range are no joke. Ensure your brake controller is calibrated for 6%+ grades near Cloudcroft and the Jemez. If you’re towing with an EV like our Ford Lightning, the Turquoise Trail (Hwy 14) is a great regenerative braking route, but watch your range on the long pull toward Taos.

Winery Access

Most NM wineries are surprisingly Airstream-friendly. Rio Grande Winery in Las Cruces and Black Mesa near Española have wide turnarounds. Always call ahead if you're over 25 feet, but Harvest Hosts is your best friend in this state for private vineyard stays.

High-Desert Boondocking

For true high-desert adventure, the BLM land near Cebolla Mesa offers incredible Gorge views. Remember: desert nights drop 30 degrees—monitor your power levels if you’re running the furnace off-grid.

This trip started exactly the way the best ones do: Sexy Nerd and I were supposed to be doing responsible adult things, I started scrolling through old vacation photos, and twenty minutes later we had flights booked to Charleston. That's a Puffventure. We spent a week eating our way through the city — and I mean eating — and came home with full hearts, slightly tighter waistbands, and approximately 175 photos of biscuits and pimento cheese. This post covers the food. Because when you visit Charleston, the food is the plan.

Where to Eat in Charleston, SC

A Change in Plans

Step 1: Sexy Nerd and I have way too much going on to even think about planning a vacation, so we will just browse through our photos of our trip to Savannah and Charleston last year.

Step 2: Wow, that place was amazing. The food! The cute houses! The friendly people and the pretty dresses and the towering trees and the history!

Step 3: Work be darned. It's time to plan a vacation!

While reaching this epiphany, it occurred to me that I said I'd share our Charleston, SC photos here on my site but never did. No biggie because I'd already sorted the ones I want to post...oh, except there are a whopping 175 to share! It really is an incredible place to visit.

My 'work be darned' attitude applies to blogging too. Who has time for that when there's a vacation to plan? Here's a quick summary of our Charleston trip, as well as all 175 photos.

Update: It turns out 175 photos in a single blog post is overly ambitious. Here are photos of the most important travel experience - the food!

1 Week in Charleston Highlights

Nigel's Good Food

When you're in the Charleston area, be sure to eat at Nigel's Good Food. We had Lowcountry Ravioli ("Grilled Chicken, Bacon, Collard Greens, Black-eye Peas, Roasted Corn, and Cheese-stuffed Ravioli tossed in a Whiskey Cream Sauce" - amazing!) and Bam's Gumbo, aka the best gumbo ever.

We also spent a day at the incredible Brookgreen Gardens, which we almost skipped because it's a bit of a drive from Charleston and the admission seemed kinda pricey ($20 per person) for what we thought was just a sculpture garden. We're glad we didn't skip it!

There's no need to skimp on the good stuff because there are plenty of other ways to save money on a trip to Charleston. Another highlight of our trip was simply taking a walk. With cobblestone streets, a waterfront, the prettiest homes, (humanely treated) horses pulling carriages, and history everywhere, even my anti-stroll husband enjoyed himself.

Puffventure verdict: Do not leave Charleston without Bam's Gumbo. Non-negotiable. This is the kind of meal that makes you genuinely angry you don't live here.

Best Places to Eat in Charleston

Callie's Hot Little Biscuit

Food at the Historic Charleston City Market

All Charleston tourists end up at the Historic Charleston City Market. When there, we recommend grabbing a bite at Callie's Hot Little Biscuit. When you're not there? Check out their online recipes.

Puffventure verdict: Callie's biscuits are the kind of thing you think about on the drive home. Get the biscuit with pimento cheese. We're from New Mexico — we don't say that lightly.

Nigel's Good Food — The Food Photos

The next day, we took our leftovers from Nigel's Good Food to the beach. Highly recommend this approach to life.

Palmetto Brewing Co

The Gobble Gobble turkey burger. Sexy Nerd was skeptical. Sexy Nerd was wrong.

At Palmetto Brewing Co, I insisted we order a Gobble Gobble turkey burger, which is rumored to be the best turkey burger in existence. Sexy Nerd thought it sounded like a lame choice. As he pointed out, even the best turkey burger is still just a turkey burger. He loved it.

Of course, you can't visit a taproom without having a beer, right? Or 4 smallish beers?

Puffventure verdict: Order whatever sounds weird. That's how you end up loving a turkey burger at a brewery at noon on a Wednesday. No regrets.

Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams

After we were both disappointed with Leopold's Ice Cream in Savannah, we were wary of trying Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams. Would it be all hype like the other?

I love Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams! A trio is not enough. Next time, I'm ordering a flight so I can taste every flavor. Brambleberry Crisp and Raspberry Rose Jelly Donut, I'll be back for you.

Puffventure verdict: We went in skeptical after Leopold's in Savannah let us down. We came out converted. Get the Brambleberry Crisp. Thank us later.

Glazed Gourmet Donuts

With my sweet tooth satisfied, you'd think we'd have walked right past Glazed Gourmet Donuts. Ha, ha.

Like we would skip the best donuts in Charleston. Our donut scene in Albuquerque is impressive, but I've never seen a donut with cranberry jam, goat cheese glaze, and candied rosemary (The Red Nosed Goat), one with sweet corn custard, blueberry glaze, and corn lemon shortbread (Sweet Corn Blueberry), or one with cardamom pistachio filling, and mango glaze (Kulfi). Those are just the normal ones. There's even a donut called Curry Up, which features curried cocoa and candied ginger.

Puffventure verdict: The Red Nosed Goat donut — cranberry jam, goat cheese glaze, candied rosemary — sounds like something a pretentious food blogger made up. It is not. It is genius. Get weird with it.

Columbia Craft Brewing Co — Day Trip Worth Taking

If you have time to explore outside of Charleston, Columbia Craft has inspired us to build a fun brewery just like this one in our backyard. You know, one day, probably. Sours are my favorite beer but most places only offer 1 or 2, if they have any at all. Columbia Craft has enough to create an entire flight.

Puffventure verdict: This is the kind of detour you almost skip because it's a drive, and then you get there and spend three hours. Classic Puffventure. If you love sours, just go.

Summerville, SC — The Bonus Detour

Another great stop outside Charleston is Summerville, SC. It's a charming small town of boutique shops.

Accent On Wine — Wine and Charcuterie in Summerville

We enjoyed creating a custom charcuterie selection at Accent On Wine, which included a few surprises. I'm still not 100% certain what that green thing with the long stem is, but it was tasty.

Pimento cheese! We're going to move to the south one day and when asked why, my answer is going to be pimento cheese.

No rental car? No problem. Accent On Wine has several locations, including in Charleston.

Puffventure verdict: Custom charcuterie + wine + pimento cheese + that unidentified green thing = the best afternoon of the trip. Zero regrets about not knowing what we ordered.

Picnicking with Verde Salads and Brookgreen Gardens

There are wonderful historic sites, nature preserves, and plantations to visit all around South Carolina. Where allowed, bring a picnic lunch by picking up Verde salads. These were huge! We should have just shared a single salad. The lid I'm holding says 'Kale them with kindness' and I love it.

Christophe Artisan Chocolatier

Back in downtown Charleston, I popped into Christophe Artisan Chocolatier on a whim.

I'm a cheapskate, so I don't usually go into stores like this. Sexy Nerd didn't even come inside, complaining that he knows I'm not going to buy anything. Imagine my surprise - the prices are reasonable!

I bought some pastries, a giant meringue, and even a fancy coffee. I think my total was something ridiculous, like $13.

Sexy Nerd couldn't believe it. I'd even bought a pastry for him. He totally got to eat some of it.

Puffventure verdict: Go in just to look. You'll leave with pastries, a meringue, a coffee, and zero regrets. Sexy Nerd waited outside and missed out. That's on him.

Charleston Farmers Market at Marion Square

On Saturday, we enjoyed the Charleston Farmers Market at Marion Square. Our vacation was mid-May and the weather was perfect.

Why a photo of grapes? Because they're absolutely gigantic. Compare them to the plums in the next bin. GIGANTIC!

Puffventure verdict: Go on a Saturday. Get there early before the crowds. Buy the grapes. You'll take a photo too.

We may have gotten slightly carried away when ordering from The Grit Counter. Would you have been able to decide between Smoked Gouda, Jalapeño Cheddar, Pesto, and Pimento Cheese grits? It's probably for the best that they don't have a location in New Mexico or we'd be eating grits for breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily.

Oh, that would be a good thing because grits are healthy! That goes double for the ones with pimento cheese, I'm sure of it.

Puffventure verdict: We ordered multiple bowls. We regret nothing. Pimento Cheese grits need to be in New Mexico immediately.

Were you one of the lucky few to join us last weekend? Move over elephant seals because the Santa Lucia Highlands Sun, Wind & Wine Festival at Mer Soleil Winery was the highlight of our trip to California.

Sexy Nerd and I attend food and wine events around the world. Although not as well known as others, such as the Santa Fe Wine and Chile Fiesta and Cherry Creek Al Fresco, the Sun, Wind & Wine Festival is one of the best we've had the pleasure of joining.

To be honest, I almost hate to share this one. There were no crowds and no lines, which is rare for a festival of this caliber. I want to keep it a secret all to myself. I'll let you in on it, but don't tell anyone else, okay?

Sun, Wind & Wine Festival Location: Getting to Mer Soleil Winery

The Santa Lucia Highlands is located inland from Monterey, CA in an area rich in farmland. The cool, windy climate is ideal for producing wine, especially pinot noir and chardonnay.

Here, multi-generational winemakers from different families focus on sustainability and work together to protect more than 5,700 acres of vines, ensuring that this unique location can continue to grow the grapes used to produce some of the top wines in the country.

On the morning of the event, we were too excited. We plugged the destination into Google Maps and headed out in our rental car toward unlimited wine tasting and gourmet dining, marveling at the crops and wineries along the way.

We could have slept in and enjoyed a more leisurely breakfast, as the map showed we were projected to arrive a whopping 40 minutes prior to the Sun, Wind & Wine Festival.

"You have arrived," announced the GPS. We were on a dirt road seemingly in the middle of nowhere. There were no festival guests, no cars, and no wine.

Silly us. We had indeed arrived at our destination. Sexy Nerd had asked me where the wine festival was and I told him Santa Lucia Highlands, CA, which he entered onto the map.

It hadn't occurred to either of us that we needed to be more specific.

We hadn't even started drinking yet.

Once we had actually arrived, backtracking to Mer Soleil Vineyards, which we had driven right past, Sexy Nerd and I couldn't believe our luck. The festival was held in the perfect location, the rarely open-to-the-public Mer Soleil barrel cellar.

Barrels of wine were stacked to the ceiling along every wall. Talk about unbeatable ambiance! It didn't matter if it was too hot, too cold, windy, or rainy outside because the weather was perfect inside the controlled space.

Participating wineries included Belle Glos, Bernardus Winery, Bruliam Wines, Caraccioli Cellars, Cattleya Wines, Clarice Wine Company, CRU Winery, Folktale Winery & Vineyards, Hahn Family Wines, Integrity Wines, J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines, Joyce Wine Company, Kori Wines, Landmark Vineyards, Luli Wines, Mansfield-Dunne Wines, and McIntyre Vineyards.

Also participating were Mer Soleil, Miner Family Winery, Mooney Family Vineyards, Morgan Winery, Odonata, Pessagno, Pisoni Vineyards, Puma Road Winery, Rexford Winery, ROAR Wines, Rombauer Vineyards, Sarah's Vineyard, Scheid Family Wines, Siduri, Testarossa, Three Furies Wines, Tolosa, Tondre Wines, Windy Oaks, and Wrath.

We were poured exquisite wines, many with vintages more than a decade old. Remember how excited I was to finally taste a Roar Pinot Noir? Mission accomplished - and it lived up to the hype!

I should be a bit miffed with Roar Wines. When I arrived, they had an enormous bottle of pinot noir. (A salmanazar? The link takes you to an article that says "You know what's better than a bottle of wine? A bigger bottle of wine." You know that's worth a click.)

I wanted a photo with it for this article, but I didn't want to be 'that person' who holds everyone up for my own interests. I asked if I could come by for a photo with the bottle at the end of the festival and was told that would be fine.

When I returned?

Gone! The massive Roar bottle had disappeared. Both of the men who had been pouring the wine seemed puzzled by this, with one saying it might be in a box under the table but not bothering to look under the table.

How can I be mad at someone who served me wine though? Impossible.

A quick visit to the Bubbles Bar made me forget all about the photo op that got away. Sparkling is my favorite and I appreciated that there was a dedicated place to find quality pours.

My favorite sip during the Sun, Wind & Wine Festival was the 2015 Blanc de Noir from Puma Road. They told me when they poured my first glass that it would be one of the best I've ever tasted and they were spot on.

Participating chefs, restaurants, catering companies, and food vendors included Ardent Culinaire, Carmel's Hidden Gem, Carmel Valley Ranch, Cheesecake Dreamations, Chef's Palate Spice Rubs, Chef Jacques Zagouri, Dollycakes, and H Jackson Events.

Lula's Chocolates, Luigi's, Rancho Cielo Drummond Culinary Academy, Real Good Fish, Schoch Family Farmstead Cheeses, Star Market, Woody's at the Airport, Yafa Carmel, and Zio Brand Meats were also serving up fantastic food.

Although wine is certainly a top reason to attend a wine festival, the food has always been my favorite part of these events. The Sun, Wind & Wine Festival had the best food of any, hands down.

We indulged in perfectly seared steak served with whole cloves of roasted garlic, shrimp bruschetta, street tacos with fresh wedges of lime, and more. There was even fresh, crunchy schnitzel. The portions were generous, nothing ran out, and there were no lines!

Caviar is supposed to be good, right? I'd never tried it and had no idea what to expect, so took a nibble nervously. Would it be slimy and taste of the ocean?

If I could handle an ice cream cone of raw fish (which was surprisingly delicious) at the Palm Desert Food and Wine Festival, there's really no reason not to try caviar.

The verdict? Team Caviar!

Next up, it was time to taste a bowl of pan-seared gnocchi. This dish featured beautiful maitake mushrooms.

I can honestly say this gnocchi was one of the best things I've eaten in my life.

Next it was time for dessert.

I helped myself to a chocolate Dolly Cakes cupcake, as well as a vanilla one "for my husband."

Sexy Nerd was too full for his cupcake and insisted I eat it instead. Oh darn.

Mr. Too-Full-For-A-Cupcake somehow managed to eat a brisket slider with kimchi slaw. Weird.

So many festivals ignore dessert altogether, but not the Sun, Wind & Wine Festival. There were so many sweet treats to choose from that I was *almost* unable to try them all!

There were even assorted truffles from local favorite Lula's Chocolates. I could have eaten a million of their sea salt caramels.

I probably came a bit closer to that amount than I should. The Lula's man was a good sport about it. Sexy Nerd only tried one chocolate, so if you split my million between the two of us, it wasn't really that outrageous.

It was a different sample Sexy Nerd had his eyes on.

I stopped at the grocery store and instantly regretted it once I saw the crowd, realizing too late it was too close to the holiday weekend for a quick stop. I grabbed one of those little carts with an upper and lower basket and squeezed my way in, planning to grab just a few things and get the heck out of there. I hate crowds. I suppose everyone hates crowds, at least at the grocery store.

Popular, I know about popular. And with an assist from me to be who you'll be...

While walking toward the watermelon, I noticed two shopping carts full of wine with clearance stickers. I randomly picked up a bottle, expecting the price to be outrageous. Smith's never seems to mark their wine down very much.

It was a Tom Gore Chardonnay marked from $15.99 to...$2. $2!

Surprised, I rummaged through the other bottles and found $12.99 bottles of port for $2, $17.99 Cabernet Sauvignons for $2, and even a $22.99 bottle of whiskey for $5. It was clearly a pricing mistake, probably made by an inexperienced or disgruntled employee, and I did what any of you would have done. I began moving all of the bottles into my cart.

Looking back, I should have simply (well, not simply) pushed both carts of wine directly to the nearest checkout. Instead, an older woman wandered over and began placing bottles in her cart. She was friendly and talkative and we quickly bonded over our love of good deals. She told me about her children and their plans for the upcoming holiday. She called me her wine buddy and even waved goodbye when I saw her leaving the store. My wine buddy sure was nice, but she sure snatched up a greedy chunk of the bargains. Those were my pinot noirs! All. Of. Them.

When the upper and lower baskets of my cart were full, I sought out the groceries I'd actually come for, although I didn't actually know where any of them were going to fit. I made the mistake of walking past the wine section on my way to the yogurt, wondering if people would understand that I was sticking 32 oz containers in my purse just temporarily and not sneakily. I planned to make a big show of it, just to be safe.

Two dollars. Two dollars. Two dollars. All of the bottles I passed were much more. I circled back, ignoring several judgmental looks and gathering up enough wine to fill that little basket on the back of the cart. Then, I reconfigured the two main ones and was able to fit in three more bottles of whiskey. I inspected the few remaining bottles to make sure I hadn't missed any gems, unsure what I would actually do if I had. Stick wine in my purse, I guess. It's a big purse. Luckily, the discarded bottles were all Beringers and Rex Goliaths. I felt a little sad for them. Rejected, even at $2.

Now I was ready to do my real grocery shopping.

Jingling my way carefully and noisily down the crowded aisles, I'll admit I felt a tad self-conscious. I wanted to explain to everyone that what surely looked like an excessive amount of alcohol was actually not. What they were seeing was an investment. Stored properly, it's not like it goes bad, right? And it wasn't just for me. My husband was going to drink some too.

Actually, I should probably provide an explanation to my blog readers because I feel like you guys might not be 100% believing me here. We're not alcoholics! I just love a good deal. Remember when I bought not enough spaghetti and pasta sauce, much to SN's exasperation? Remind me to post a photo of our new pantry some time. It holds so many jars of pickles without even trying. It's impossible to overstock those. What are they going to do, become more pickled?

In the baking aisle, two little old ladies were giving me some seriously disapproving side-eye, which caused my socially awkward brain to do the only thing it knows how to do. I gave them my biggest, goofiest, all-teeth-and-gums smile. And you know what? They both smiled back.

Continuing my adventure through the store, glass clattering with every step, I beamed at everyone. Everyone smiled right back at me. Eight (yes, eight!) different people laughed and told me a variation of "I'm coming to your house tonight."

I even received a high five.

In the frenzy, a Beringer somehow made its way into my cart. Sneaky bastard.

This happy tale of friendship was nearly halted by a checkout tragedy. It turns out you cannot load dozens of tall, glass bottles onto the conveyor. Did you know this? When it started up, they all began violently shaking. I reached out to steady them, but bottles began to topple over, knocking each other down like dominoes! The guy in line behind me gasped. Actually, I think everyone within at least three registers gasped.

Miraculously, nothing fell off the conveyor. I'm not a big believer in miracles, but what else would you call this?

The cashier had been cold to the woman in line ahead of me and I was certain she'd be annoyed about having to ring up so many bottles, especially when I learned she had to manually override the price on each and every one. (Seriously, Smith's?) She also had to remove the plastic security cap from all of the whiskeys and, of course, it turned out that they had two different types of caps and she only had the tool for one and not the other. She was not going to be my friend, right? About halfway through, sensing her frustration, I joked that this would probably end up being the first time in my life that I'm pulled over on my way home.

She laughed so hard. When you have all the wine, everyone loves you.

The very best part of this wine adventure? On all of these obscenely underpriced bottles, Smith's still gave me the case discount. $1.60 each!!

Damn. I should have bought more, Beringers and all.

Social anxiety be darned

Keep a positive attitude. If you let the little voice inside your head tell you no one wants to be your friend, you will not have the confidence to attempt the rest of these tips.
Pretend everyone is already your friend. Compliment the outfit of the stranger sitting next to you. With a smile, ask the person in line with you at the grocery store a question, such as if they've tried the ice cream they're buying or what they're planning to make with that ground beef. While it is unlikely these small interactions will result in a friendship, they're great practice for improving your social skills.
Invite coworkers to join you at a special event, such as a local festival, painting class, or happy hour. No one to invite? Events typically have a social media page. Post a message that you're excited to attend but no one is available to join you, so are looking for someone or a group to go with.
Get to know your neighbors by hosting an open house. You can mail an invitation to the homes on your street or spread the word on NextDoor. It doesn't have to be elaborate. Something like snacks on your patio or a dessert potluck, with a drop in window of anytime between 4-6 pm, makes for a fun, informal time.
Post a message on your favorite Facebook group asking if any other members live in the same city. You already have a common interest. Don't belong to any groups? Search for and join ones for your hobbies. Just about everything has a Facebook group these days, including author fan clubs, animal rescuers, hiking enthusiasts, local gardeners, and Sailor Moon.

Breakfast, the Most Embarrassing Meal of the Day

Let me start this post by stating, for the record, that I stay at Marriott hotels all the time. I'm in it for the breakfast and when a hotel doesn't include this, I stay elsewhere. I am a hotel waffle-making pro.

Then again, making your own waffle is easy peasy, right?

Behold, the tower of waffle batter goodness. How many gallons does it contain? We would soon find out.

I always look forward to creating a decadent hotel waffle. The fateful Monday morning after the Summit County Parade of Homes was no exception and I was pleased to discover that no one was using the waffle iron, despite the crowd in the hotel breakfast room. It's no secret that I'm a social-anxiety mess, even with something as basic as navigating a shared waffle iron, so this was a relief and a great start to my day.

I picked up my little plastic batter cup. I pressed down on the dispenser nozzle, as I've done 100 times. And then...

The nozzle broke off.

It just snapped right off in my hand. The batter exploded from the now-gaping hole in the dispenser, running over the countertop and onto the floor within seconds. And, apparently, there weren't many people in the breakfast room who shared my (former) love of hotel waffles, because that darn batter dispenser seemed to be full to the brim. It wouldn't stop! I tried to block the flow with my hands, but that just made things worse, as I was soon coated in sticky globs of batter. Everyone was looking, many with their mouth agape. I didn't know what to do. A hotel employee rushed over, but the mess quickly overwhelmed her stack of paper towels. The batter was out of control!

Sexy Nerd, often oblivious, was getting himself a bowl of oatmeal at the time. He turned to look at me, my panic-stricken face surely worse than he'd ever seen. My sweet husband. My hero.

He laughed and sat down, enjoying his oatmeal with a smile on his face.

Instant Pot Oatmeal & Quinoa Recipe (Healthy Egg-Free Breakfast)

In response to my popular Instant Pot Explosion blog post, I've had a few blog readers ask for my oatmeal with quinoa recipe, which is made in the Instant Pot. This seems a bit odd...you guys aren't trying to recreate that gooey mess in your own kitchens, right?

My recipe does make delicious, foolproof Instant Pot oatmeal. It's only for patient people though. Whatever you do, do not manually release the pressure valve at the end of the cooking cycle!

This recipe is also great in a Crock Pot, though that method takes longer. I like to set the temperature to Low before bed. What a hearty, indulgent breakfast to wake up to!

I've been cooking up batches of my Oatmeal with Quinoa for years, long before I'd heard of the Instant Pot, and have even gifted the dry ingredients to health-conscious friends and family, who've suggested I sell this. Shark Tank, here I come!

Oatmeal with Quinoa

No eggs/egg-free breakfast recipe featured in 36 Foolproof Instant Pot Recipes

Look! In the sky! It's a bird, it's a plane, it's...Super Oatmeal!
(Actually, it really should not be in the sky. Instant Pot fail!)
See the little specks? That's part of what makes it so super.

Can you mix quinoa and oatmeal? Absolutely! The best thing about my Oatmeal with Quinoa recipe is that it's much healthier than regular oatmeal recipes. Start your day with this and you can feel better about all those cookies and fried donuts and ice cream (can you tell I have a bit of a sweet tooth?) you munch on throughout the rest of the day.

It's really good. I'm eating my Oatmeal with Quinoa as I write this.

Basically, you throw your dry ingredients into the Instant Pot (or slow cooker), then cover them with double the amount of liquid. For example, I fill the dry ingredients to the 1L line, then cover them with milk to the 2L line.

I do this every Sunday evening and it creates enough for me to have breakfast every day for the next week. It's nice knowing I have a hot, satisfying meal ready to go before work each day, especially as I'm still not eating cereal.

This also works well as a PIP (Pot In Pot) Instant Pot recipe, which makes cleanup a breeze!

When my Oatmeal with Quinoa is done cooking, I throw in an entire bag of frozen cranberries. Frozen cranberries are the best thing ever in oatmeal! I always stock up when they go on sale, usually around Thanksgiving. The same goes for tiny chickens, but that's off topic.

Please do not add tiny chickens to your Oatmeal with Quinoa.

New Year's Resolution = Stop being so rambly on my blog. Stay on topic. Focus.

Telling you that last part was super off topic.

Quick side story, related to frozen cranberries so I'm not technically breaking my resolution. (Also, I recently read that no one makes resolutions anymore and felt a bit ashamed because I love making resolutions and discussing them.)

I bought all of the bags of frozen cranberries you see in the photo above, plus quite a few more (I'd already been into my stash for several months when the photo was taken) at the same time, right before Thanksgiving. This caused a man in the checkout line to jokingly ask how many people I'm expecting for dinner, a big goofy smile on his face. I'd been at work all day and it was cold and dark and I was tired and my nose was stuffy and I had a headache and my shoes were uncomfortable and I just wanted to finish my grocery shopping and not fight the Thanksgiving crowds but the crowds didn't even care.

"A million," I told him with no smile on my face, maybe even a scowl. You have to read your audience, weird checkout guy.

Also, as the cashier scanned bag after frozen bag, we were soon surrounded by individual red cranberries littering the conveyor belt and the counter and the floor. One or more of the bags almost certainly had a hole. We looked through each and could not find where any of the stray berries had come from. I still purchased them all. Months later, I wonder Where did those cranberries come from? every time I open a pristine new bag.

Okay, on to the recipe.

Oatmeal with Quinoa
(AKA Super Oatmeal)

Whenever I make this, I add all of the following ingredients. However, if you are missing some, you can still make this recipe and just omit the things you don't have.

Except the oats. Do not omit the oats.

(Kinda feel like that should go without saying.)

ADD THESE FIRST:

See how we're at the top of the list? The ingredients are listed from largest quantity to smallest quantity.

Oats (I prefer regular to instant)
Quinoa
Wheat Berries
Raisins and/or Dried Cranberries
Ground Flax Seed
Oat Bran
Maple Syrup (cheapskate that I am, I use the fake, calorie-free kind from the dollar store)
Your Favorite Fruit Butter, Jam, or Jelly (well, maybe not one of those hot pepper jellies)
Spices, such as Cinnamon, Cardamom, Ginger, and Allspice

Ah, you've made it to the end of the list. These down here should be your smallest quantities.

THEN ADD DOUBLE THE AMOUNT OF THIS:

Liquid, such as Water, Milk, Almond Milk, or Soy Milk

If the ingredients from above are at the 1L line on your Instant Pot, you need to add liquid until you are at the 2L line. Generally, your Instant Pot recipe isn't going to be successful if it contains only milk and no water, but it is not a problem with this ratio.

STIR.

SEAL THE INSTANT POT LID AND PRESS THE PORRIDGE BUTTON.

Manual 15 minutes is basically the same thing. Instant Pots have a zillion buttons and settings, but the Manual one renders them all obsolete. It's sort of a scam, Instant Pot, but I forgive you because you are awesome.

THROW THIS IN AFTER COOKING:

An Excessive Amount of Frozen Cranberries (so delicious!)

No amounts? No quantities? That's right. This recipe is so foolproof, I'm leaving that to your discretion. Just keep in mind that I listed the ingredients in the first section by amount from greatest to least. After cooking, if the oatmeal is too thick for your preference, feel free to add more liquid.

A note for all you crazy people who can't make a recipe without modifying it. You know, people like me:

It's tempting to add chia seeds. They'll make this Super Oatmeal even more healthy, right? Well, I've made that mistake again and again, each time wanting to make the healthiest batch of oatmeal ever. The chia seeds are taking it too far though. They give this a gummy, bland taste. Don't do it.

Here are a few terrific mix-ins for your Oatmeal with Quinoa:

Brown or Black Rice
Applesauce
Diced Apples
Blueberries
Shredded Coconut
Chopped Nuts
Frozen Cranberries - Before Cooking (You don't have to wait until the end to stir these in, but note that it will take your Instant Pot forever to pressurize if you throw in an entire bag of what is basically balls of ice before cooking.)

Lavender in the Village

New Mexicans dress to impress.

Established in 1994, Lavender in the Village is a lavender-focused event held in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque, NM every July. It's the largest Lavender Festival in the Southwestern USA and is fun for lavender-enthusiasts and lavender-newbies alike.

The mission of the Lavender in the Village of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque is to preserve and enhance Los Ranchos public open space, stimulate an interest in sustainable agriculture, with an emphasis on educating the public, including such matters as historic agriculture, lavender and its uses, and fostering community spirit.

More Than Beer at the (AMAZING!) NM Brew Fest

My husband and I have seen ads for the New Mexico Brew Fest, which coincides with Albuquerque's world-famous Balloon Fiesta, year after year. Why haven't we ever gone? Obviously, we are ridiculous fools because the New Mexico Brew Fest was the best time ever! It's our all-time favorite beer festival.

(Don't tell the Fall Ale Fest. It was only their first year. They'll get there.)

You know you're in for a great time when it's socially acceptable to wear food.

For a mere $25 per person, New Mexico Brew Fest patrons receive an entire day of unlimited craft beer from top local breweries, including Boxing Bear, Toltec Brewing, Canteen Brewhouse, and almost 2 dozen more. There is extra-hard cider from Sandia Hard Cider (yes, extra. You'll see what I mean below) and, one of my favorites for food and drinks, Hollow Spirits Distillery will mix you something special featuring their house-made gin, vodka, and rum.

Think I'm overselling it? The New Mexico Brew Fest has been as ranked one of the 10 Best Fall Beer Festivals in the USA. Go Albuquerque!

We'd actually expected to spend only a short time at the festival, then hit up the Albuquerque Parade of Homes. (If you're a fan of this blog, you know I looove the parade of homes!) Well, we completely missed seeing any houses and it was completely worth it.

Albuquerque's own Crème de la Crème dessert shop was on site with their homemade crème brulée in luscious flavors like maple bourbon. Early-entry VIPs each received a special pumpkin pie crème brulée, which Doug and Morgan at the Marble Brewing tent next door happily paired with a Pumpkin Noir ale.

Would I like a sample of bananas foster crème brulée, in addition to the entire pan of pumpkin pie crème brulée I just polished off? Yes, please!

In addition to TWO souvenir glasses, each guest received a tote bag of goodies, including snacks from Whole Foods, a bottle opener, stickers, a beer koozie, and more. My husband and I attend food and wine festivals all over the country and this was our first-ever swag bag. Such a nice touch!

Local favorite Go Wicked Kettle Corn was selling enormous bags of popcorn and cotton candy.

Samples galore! I need more hands.

The ladies at Go Wicked Kettle Corn couldn't have been more friendly. They gladly let me taste every flavor, including Dapple Apple, Cinnamon, and 505 Flavor Bomb, which is made with red and green chile.

Pet-A-Bulls pitbull adoption was spreading the furry love (wait, that sounds...wrong) at the New Mexico Brew Fest. This guy thought it would be fun to bring his kid, but little did he know he'd be going home with a new (drooling sooo much) dog.

Some attendees dressed for the occasion! German drinking garments were encouraged. Sexy Nerd and I are going to have to put together outfits for next year. Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if he already has this exact outfit somewhere in his closet.

Guess my electric bill? It's ZERO. I hovered around the Affordable Solar booth, casually mentioning to anyone within earshot that they did our solar panels and we love them.

The New Mexico Brew Fest even had beer soap! It kinda changes the meaning of your mom's old threat to wash your mouth out with soap, doesn't it?

What's that? You don't attend a beer festival for solar panels or soap or dogs or even swag bags? Ah, I know what you're getting at.

You attend a beer festival for pretzels, right?

No?!

(By the way, each of the Whole Foods goody bags included a pretzel necklace and they were awesome.)

Oh, you must be thinking of the beer! Well, you're in luck. There was more beer than you could possibly drink.

Rio Bravo Brewing Company gets my vote for the most clever beer names. In addition to a Starbucks-like Basic Witch Pumpkin Spice and a Beer Against Humanity, they served me something called "Witch's Tit." Ordering it felt wrong, but it tasted so right.

La Cumbre is Sexy Nerd's favorite. He insists their IPA is the best, but he's wrong. You have to try their Mango Pineapple Gose!

I've been a fan of Hollow Spirits ever since I won 1st place at their Simpsons Trivia night. (They also host epic Mario Cart tournaments.) With popular menu items like the Hollow Buddha Bowl and the 50/50 Burger, which is made with chorizo, they need to get a food truck for events like these. Please, Hollow Spirits?

Hey, I remember these guys from the Green Chile Cheeseburger Smackdown in Santa Fe. Steel Bender won the well-deserved People's Choice award. Who would have guessed that some of the best burgers and brews in the state can be found in little Los Ranchos?

Remember how I said earlier that Sandia Hard Cider was serving "extra" hard cider? They're serving something called Hempberry...with CBD! You've gotta love living in New Mexico. Based on what I've read about CBD, I'm pretty sure this can be considered a healthy beverage option.

My husband would like me to add that he did not sample the Hempberry. In fact, not only would he not try a sip of mine, he refused to even hold my empty glass for me after I tried it, lest there still be some magical Hempberry cooties lingering nearby.

I was thrilled to see Marble Brewery offering their hard seltzer, which is said to be "the drink" of 2019. Through blogging, Sexy Nerd and I have been to more food and wine events this year than I can count, but this was the first time I've ever been able to sample hard seltzer.

Their Raspberry Key Lime and Cucumber Key Lime flavors are both refreshing. I love sparkling water but might love this even more. White Claw and other hard seltzers have been in short supply around the country, but I think Marble is here to give them a run for their money.

I have a sad confession. Although I always try to stay professional at events like these, I found out my grandma had passed away just a few hours before heading to the Brew Fest. I considered staying home to cry, but my grandma wouldn't have wanted that. The fun and excitement helped me feel much better. To Grandma!

A few (dozen) beer, seltzer, and cider samples later, Sexy Nerd insisted we get some food in me.

Apparently, pretzel necklaces don't count.

New Mexico does food better than anywhere else in the world. With many food trucks to choose from, we shared a jackfruit tamale and a lobo-style, red chile beer brat.

He's totally holding me up.

When we finished our meal, someone asked me how the food was and I replied that it was good, except that the nachos were a little too spicy.

Sexy Nerd was quick to point out that we hadn't had any nachos and insisted we get more food in me before going back for more drinks. He may have confiscated my glass.

Nachos! It turns out they weren't too spicy after all.

Sexy Nerd thought it was safe to let me resume sampling and off I went, high on life and possibly on Hempberry. When I returned, I showed him the photos I'd taken in his absence, including this one "of the Culligan water man, who said he would pose for me. Wasn't that nice?"

An exasperated Sexy Nerd put his hand to his head and insisted that is not the Culligan water man and that it is actually just some guy trying to flirt with me. (Jokes on him because I am oblivious.) Now I don't know what to believe. Was he there to restock the water for the festival or not??

Just when you thought the New Mexico Brew Fest couldn't get any better, there was a parade! The live entertainment, including a DJ playing everyone's favorite songs, was top notch. People were dancing and singing along.

I'll admit one of the reasons we'd never attended the NM Brew Fest before was that we thought it might be a little too...let's call it "Breaking Bad." (Hey, it's filmed here for a reason.) We were wrong though.

Everyone was just having a good time, enjoying a gorgeous Saturday afternoon with old and new friends.

This makes me wonder what other amazing New Mexico festivals we've been missing out on. Let's expand our horizons, Sexy Nerd!

I assured these ladies I would edit their photo before sharing it on my site, but I couldn't find a darn thing to edit - no blemishes, no sweater lint, not even a stray hair. I'm impressed.

Beer Fest = The Fountain of Youth?

The New Mexico Brew Fest had activities scattered throughout for festival-goers to enjoy. When we first arrived, I doubted many people would participate. A few drinks in, I think you can guess what happened.

Yours truly even got in on the cornhole action, social anxiety be darned. It, uhh, totally made it in. Weird that Sexy Nerd didn't get a photo of that. You'll just have to take my word for it.

A few hours into the New Mexico Brew Fest, I apparently became a pretzel princess. I don't remember doing this.

I treated my extremely patient designated driver to a well-earned paleta from Pop Fizz. We've visited them at the National Hispanic Cultural Center and were excited to see their food truck at the festival. Try the strawberry banana.

Kicking ourselves for missing the 2018, 2017, 2016, and all previous Brew Fests, Sexy Nerd and I vowed to be their #1 fans from now on and attend every year. Just eleven and a half months to go!

A Change in Plans

Step 1: Sexy Nerd and I have way too much going on to even think about planning a vacation, so we will just browse through our photos of our trip to Savannah and Charleston last year.

Step 2: Wow, that place was amazing. The food! The cute houses! The friendly people and the pretty dresses and the towering trees and the history!

Step 3: Work be darned. It's time to plan a vacation!

1 Week in Charleston Highlights

Best Places to Eat in Charleston

All Charleston tourists end up at the Historic Charleston City Market. When there, we recommend grabbing a bite at Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit. When you're not there? Check out their online recipes.

Nigels Good Food - Fried Green Tomatoes (which we learned are actually not Southern - surprise!) and Bam's Gumbo

The next day, we took our leftovers from Nigels Good Food to the beach.

Of course, you can't visit a taproom without having a beer, right? Or 4 smallish beers?

After we were both disappointed with Leopold's Ice Cream in Savannah, we were wary of trying Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams. Would it be all hype like the other?

I love Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams! A trio is not enough. Next time, I'm ordering a flight so I can taste every flavor. Brambleberry Crisp and Raspberry Rose Jelly Donut, I'll be back for you.

With my sweet tooth satisfied, you'd think we'd have walked right past Glazed Gourmet Donuts. Ha, ha.

Another great stop outside Charleston is Summerville, SC. It's a charming small town of boutique shops.

We enjoyed creating a custom charcuterie selection at Accent On Wine, which included a few surprised. I'm still not 100% certain what that green thing with the long stem is, but it was tasty.
