During that time, I have had two pursuits -- building things and creating art. There will be all sorts of interesting stories in the entries that follow..."
Tony, who use to write for Modern Photography, started the artist muse with images from a Sony DSC-H9, parted ways with it, moved to the Lumix FZ18, upgrade it to the FZ28 and is now uses the Lumix FZ35, with which he continues to share his vast knowledge and experience, muse and delights as he blogs on.

Do not let my superficiality makes you think otherwise, a lot more is apparent when you share this delight with me:

Art and the Zen of Design - Build complex toys and simple tools

------------------------------------------------------
New and Used Film and Digital Cameras, Lenses, Accessories
** Digital and Film Cameras, Accessories, Collectibles Catalog

Impressions, Impressions

Back to when the Olympus E-P1 was newly introduced, my first impression of that gem of a digital camera was "Hey, I am not Ansel Adams and why should I want such a highly specified digital which I can hold upright unsteadily only at arms length."

That has not changed.

Much as I have tried, I will never get used to the idea of using a LCD live view only camera for image composition unless the camera is placed on a tripod or supported on a hard surface. Holding the camera at arms length is never a rock steady solution, your hands get tired far too quickly, waiting in the changing light for that 'perfect moment' is, well...

That sets me off the E-P1.

My beat-up Lumix FZ18 (now replaced by the FZ35/38), with both EVF (Electronic View Finder) and LCD live-view modes, is still my choice. When composing using the EVF with the camera up to my face, the action is steadier, framing and quick follow-through action shots is much more like the days of film cameras. Landscapes and macros are on a tripod with image composition done through the LCD live-view.

Then came the Olympus E-P2:

My Impression of the Olympus Digital Pen Interchangeable Lens Cameras

------------------------------------------------------
New and Used Film and Digital Cameras, Lenses, Accessories
** Digital and Film Cameras, Accessories, Collectibles Catalog

Olympus Pen E-P2, The Digital Pen Upgraded

Just five months after the launch of the retro-chic Micro Four-Thirds camera, the E-P1, Olympus has now announced the E-P2, with specs including a 12.3-megapixel Live MOS sensor with dust reduction and image stabilization, up to ISO 6400, 3-inch HyperCrystal LCD, 20 shooting modes, face detection and the camera takes SD or SDHC memory cards. The camera will start selling in January 2010, either with a 17mm pancake or 14-42mm zoom lens.

Is this upgrade a bit too fast too often? Looks like it is to actually fills a few rough spots regularly mentioned by reviews and users of the E-P1, main being the absence of an viewfinder for that much needed image framing capability of a great user camera, and the much lamented AF speed and mode.

One thing perhaps worth mentioning within the upgrade pack is the ability of the E-P2 to record 7 minute's of AVI format movies in 30fps at 1280x720p HD resolution:

Olympus Pen E-P2, The Digital Pen Upgraded

------------------------------------------------------
New and Used Film and Digital Cameras, Lenses, Accessories
** Digital and Film Cameras, Accessories, Collectibles Catalog

Buying hardware and machine equipment online

Pay a visit to your local hardware superstore and you will find that promotional items, best buys and special offers displays are rotated regularly, more so as the season changes. This is the norm as seasonal change dictates the type of equipment or hardware that buyers are looking forward to buy. Suffice to say that snow-blowers will sell well in winter while edge trimmers will be the demand in spring or summer.

Online hardware stores may take a slightly different approach. While the entrance page can do with nice and attractive graphics appropriate for the season, it is the product listing that buyers are more keen to look at. Browse through each category listing and you'll soon realize that the more sought after items, or favorites, are listed higher up in the listing or page. Well and good, makes it easier to zero in on the product that you are looking for, doesn't it?

As online stores acquires a bigger volume of best buys or favorite items from suppliers and since they do not require the product to be displayed physically, their overhead can be substantially lower to that of a brick-and-mortar superstore and cost savings will eventually be channeled to you as well.

Ready now to look at a range of snow-blowers, heavy duty winter outdoor power tools, or are you on the lookout for a portable power generators for the winter blackout emergency which is not totally unexpected?

Yes, it's time for the snow-blower to be oiled and greased...

Easy Does It With An Outdoor Power Tool, Best Buys, Auctions Deals!

Pack a Portable Generator for Blackout Emergencies, An Advisory

------------------------------------------------------
New and Used Film and Digital Cameras, Lenses, Accessories
** Digital and Film Cameras, Accessories, Collectibles Catalog

A new subclass in digital cameras?

It just dawned on me, as I struggled yet with another Squidoo lens, this time on the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1, that the industry might just be ready for a new sub-class in digital cameras, Micro FourThirds.

Currently, there only 4 models available on the market, one from Olympus an three from the Panasonic Lumix line, yet rumors are rife that other manufacturers are also thinking about joining the bandwagon, Sony being one of them.

The impact of the Olympus E-P1 was felt throughout the industry, applause, accolades plus of course criticism abound. Hot on the heels on the E-P1 is the Lumix DMC GF1, which looks likely to add more ripples to the wave. Both of these models were preceded by the Lumix DMC-G1 and DMC-GH1.

With interchangeable lenses, these Micro FourThirds, without the weight and bulk, can of course take on the much established DSLRs, though may not be at the professional level as yet. Having a form factor much like compact point-and-shoots, they become a good choice for enthusiasts who are on the upgrade path from their compact point-n-shoots, which at this time is still the realm of the superzoom digital cameras. Just wondering too, how strong is the current superzoom digital bridge sector to take on this rivalry, if it does comes to that.

I will bide my time and wait to see the outcome:

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1, Dare To Take The Challenge

Olympus E-P1 - The Olympus 'Digital Pen' Camera System

Lumix DMC-G1 and DMC-GH1 Micro Four-Thirds Digital Cameras

Micro FourThirds Interchangable Lens Digital Camera System, Best Buys!

Best Priced Lumix G Digital Camera Systems, Auction Deals!

------------------------------------------------------
New and Used Film and Digital Cameras, Lenses, Accessories
** Digital and Film Cameras, Accessories, Collectibles Catalog

Driving in winter

Make sure your vehicle is mechanically ready for the cold weather ahead, get it winter-ready with a maintenance check-up. Have the battery, belts hoses, radiator, oil, lights, brakes, exhaust system, heater/defroster, wipers and ignition system checked and fluids replaced for the ones rated for winter.

Tires are important. Worn and damaged tires is a danger not only to yourself but to others as well. Make sure you have the recommended type suitable for your driving location. If you live and drive in snow-belt areas, consider using winter tires. Check the tire air pressure frequently, as they tend to decreases as the weather gets colder.

Dress comfortably, don't let your clothing restrict your movement while at the wheel. Keep warm clothing for getting out of your vehicle. Clear snow and ice from all windows, lights, mirrors and the roof. After starting your vehicle, wait for the fog to clear from the interior of the windows so you will have good visibility all around.

Be prepared for the unexpected emergency, have a First Aid kit handy, a map of your driving location, an ice scraper, snow brush, matches, candles, flashlight, warning triangles, flares, tow and battery jumping cables, folding shovel, a bag of sand, a blanket, winter gloves, cell phone if you have one, and an emergency HELP sign that you can put in the back window if you need help.

Stay alert, slow down and stay in control:

Pack An Auto Emergency Kit for Your Driving Safety

Automotive Jump Starters, And It's Many Practical Uses

Thule Snow Chains, The Choice for Safe Snow Driving

AutoSock Winter Traction Aids Safety on Snow and Ice

------------------------------------------------------
New and Used Film and Digital Cameras, Lenses, Accessories
** Digital and Film Cameras, Accessories, Collectibles Catalog

Do You Cycle In Winter?

Yes, and many more, presumably a lot more do than you think. Some still commutes to work on a bicycle regardless the season while others do it for health and fitness. In the cold and frozen North, for example, the pleasures of bike riding can dispel some of the gloom of the dreary winter months.

Are you properly dressed for the excursion at hand? Contrary to some expectations, one will soon realize that with winter cycling the problem is not in keeping warm, but rather the opposite, that is keeping cool. Cycling in any weather generates sweat and a great deal of excess heat. The dressing code is therefore the ability to address this problem. Your own body metabolism dictates that you try the best to adopt to the situation on a trial-and-error basis.

It is only when temperatures dip to minus 20 degree Centigrade (-20C) that being warm enough requires some planning. Hardcore winter cyclists, however, will keep on riding until the temperature is way below that.

Beginners will find winter riding to be challenging. It’s good to practice before setting out on a serious ride. Relax, cyclists fare better on slippery surfaces when they aren't tensed up. A minor tumble or two will be a good learning curve as your riding ability improves with each ride.

Keep at it, you'll enjoy it more with each passing moment, no matter the weather:

Cycling: Getting The Best Of Your Road Bikes

Cycling: Cruising Eazy with Top Pick Cruiser Bikes

Cycling: Which Way Up Please, I'm On A Mountain Bike!

Cycling: Easy Does It On Your Favorite Comfort Bike

Cycling: What Choice BMX And Your Riding Style

------------------------------------------------------
New and Used Film and Digital Cameras, Lenses, Accessories
** Digital and Film Cameras, Accessories, Collectibles Catalog

Live music photography

Stumbled across this four-part narration as I was trekking my way across the galaxy today. While the FZ18 is now Panasonic Lumix FZ35 (FZ38 in Europe), 18x optical zoom capable but now with a film equivalent of 27mm to 486mm, there are others and more powerful brand names that makes my FZ18 looks diminutive by comparison.

Niched between the point-and-shoot compacts and the dynamic DSLRs, these cameras are equally adept with users on the upgrade path from the compacts or just like me, an advanced enthusiasts or semi-professional who wants a compact, lightweight walk-about with a substantial power zoom, to try their creativity with. As we all know, the superzoom (or bridge) digital camera is an equally keenly contested sector among major manufacturers, with each trying to outbid the other for a bigger customer base. One of the draw-card of each model, among other things, must of course be the zoom range capability .

What's your favorite focal length? Mine is of course at the far extremities of the range. If ever I am looking out for more, these are the few superzoom cameras I will be looking at right away:

The Olympus SP-590UZ, 26X Wide Angle Optical Dual Image Stabilized Zoom with a 26-676mm focal length equivalent.

Nikon Coolpix P90, 24x Wide Angle Optical Vibration Reduction (VR) Zoom with a 26-624mm focal length equivalent.

Pentax X70, 24x Optical Triple Shake Reduction Zoom with a 26-624mm focal length equivalent.

Canon PowerShot SX20IS, 20x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom with a 28-560mm focal length equivalent.

Fujifilm Finepix S200EXR, 14.3x Optical Triple Image Stabilized Zoom with a 30.5mm-436mm focal length equivalent

Each of these superzooms have their unique pros and cons and need to be evaluated against your real photographic needs. Do not get too easily convinced with what you are reading either, hand-holding a lightweight superzoom at the extremities of it's zoom range is something to really think and be prepared for:

SuperZoom Digital Cameras, Best Priced, Auction Deals!

Olympus SP SuperZoom Digital Cameras, Best Priced, Auction Deals!

Fujifilm FinePix S200EXR / S205EXR, Is it you?

24x Super Zoom Nikon Coolpix P90 12.1MP Digital Camera

------------------------------------------------------
New and Used Film and Digital Cameras, Lenses, Accessories
** Digital and Film Cameras, Accessories, Collectibles Catalog

My Favorite Walk-About

Despite having being technologically replaced by the more advanced FZ28 earlier and by the FZ35/FZ38 only just recently, I am still happy and contended hanging around with the Panasonic Lumix FZ18, my favorite creative / walk-about / candid digital camera. It's light and compact body, with a whooping 28-504 mm film equivalent lens gives me enough latitude to grab from whole vista of landscapes to an almost macro creative of the heel of an old canvas shoes, see image.

The Panasonic Lumix FZ18, FZ28 and FZ35/FZ38, is part of a very competitive group of superzoom digital bridge cameras, more advanced and more versatile than a simple point-and-shoot digital compact but not with the sophistication of an interchangeable lenses digital SLR. It does come with a viewfinder, albeit electronic, separate form the LCD screen, which you can use to frame and compose your image before taking the shot. New generation point-and-shoot users can always use the LCD screen for the same function.

While the 28-504 mm zoom range is power at your fingertips, hand-holding the camera point-and-shoot style is just not the way to do it. Your hands become unsteady, camera movement will be magnified with every increase in zoom factor and your image may not be as sharp as you would expect. Using the viewfinder (with the camera held close to your face) is one way of providing more stability when shooting hand-held, otherwise keep a a light tripod handy and available at all times. Another factor to consider is the size and weight of the camera which does moves if ever slightly with every movement of your hands, even when tripping the shutter.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35, Your SuperZoom Choice

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ SuperZoom Digital Camera

Best Priced SuperZoom Digital Cameras, Auction Deals!

------------------------------------------------------
New and Used Film and Digital Cameras, Lenses, Accessories
** Digital and Film Cameras, Accessories, Collectibles Catalog

A 'lil bit on the sports

OneSports too is trying his very best to keep abreast with product availability and updated listings on his sporting goods orientated Squidoo lenses. For example, where the normal frame size of a 35mm film is 24x36mm, images recorded in half-frame is 18x24mm. With these half-frame camera, one can fit twice as many pictures onto a standard roll of film. For example, 72 exposures on a 36-exposure roll, 48 on a 24-exposure one, and so on.

By using the half-frame format, Olympus was able to reduce both the weight and size of the Olympus Pen. The cameras featured a simple rear-winding mechanism, D-Zuiko lenses which are established for their image quality, attractive design and extremely easy to use. The Pen was a compact mix of innovative ideas that triggered the half-frame camera boom of the 1960s and 1970s...

Half-Frame Cameras, Olympus Classic Collectibles

Sony Alpha A230, A330, A380 Digital SLRs

Looks like the new Sony Alpha Digital SLR range is finally official. and Mission Impossible's on the other.

Olympus's carry down of the Art Filters and Image Capture Options float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/413jiODR-jL._SL210_.jpg" alt="" border="0" />The phenomena of the Sony Alpha digital SLR cameras was quiet an outstanding achievement considering that Sony's forte was the Walkman of the past and the PlayStation video game consoles currently.

The introductory period of their initial product, the Sony Alpha A100, developed after Sony acquired the technology of Konica-Minolta digital camera division, was only a short spell before they came full blast with the Sony Alpha A200, the A300 and the A350. The Sony Alpha A700 cuts the cake as the top-dog of Sony pro-consumer digital SLR offerings.

The full-frame Sony Alpha A900 leverages itself as the first 'professional' level from Sony, surprising itself as 'perhaps the most pared-down, frill-free and unashamedly 'serious' DSLR we've seen in a long time.'

With these current crop of enticingly priced bodies, Sony is somewhat assured that they will have addressed current issues of Sony enthusiasts looking for an upgrade path to their hardware, but the question remains, is the Sony Alpha digital SLRs strong enough to create the elusive and exclusive group of Sony digital SLR professional stalwarts?

Which Sony Alpha Digital SLR Should I Buy, Quick Facts

Getting the perfect digital SLR camera, an overview

With such a high number of similarly titled web pages on the internet, I think it will be quiet hard for mine to be ever highly rated by the mights of search engines like Google, Yahoo and others. Trying, nevertheless is the name of the game, success the ultimate aim and perseverance, I suppose, is the means to the end.

That is what I started to do early today, on a fresh Squidoo lens, and got it finally published towards the evening. The whole idea is to see how far I can go with writing for the internet, albeit for my self right now.

Come, share my thoughts:

Getting the perfect digital SLR camera, an overview
