Deven Coldewey focuses on weight, comfort and ease-of-use in his review of the AKG K830 and K840 wireless headphones from Harman Audio and noted that they score pretty high in all three criteria. He chose to mainly test the K840 with Kleerâ wireless audio technology because, in his opinion, its RF support makes it “…the more universally applicable model, having a compact dongle that attaches to any 1/8" audio jack. One of the news items that came out of CES 2011 was an announcement by Sleek Audio and rapper Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson introducing the Sleek by 50 Cent line of headphones which use the Kleer lossless wireless audio technology. Engadget says, “We’re told that they were designed by 50 Cent and engineered by Sleek, and are the first headphones ever to offer ‘Wireless Hybrid’ technology with military-grade metals.” Although the Sleek by 50 Cent headphones haven’t yet been released, they are already being compared with the Beats by Dr. Dre headphones so more reviews are sure to follow. Air travelers who pick up the December issue of Delta Sky magazine will find a compelling review of the Arcam rCube iPhone dock on page 38. On YouTube, I came across two positive reviews about the Sennheiser RS 170 wireless headphones that use Kleer wireless audio technology. While it’s not the same as trying the Sennheiser wireless headphones at a store, the videos do add to the overall review experience. One is from ThatSnazzyiPhoneGuy, a YouTube reviewer who calls the RS 170 wireless headphones “flawless” and gives them a rating of 10 out of 10. You can subscribe to his YouTube channel. It’s always a good idea to sample some of other product reviews by the same individual as that will give you an idea of his review capabilities and overall product knowledge. The other review is from TigerDirectTV (also known as TigerDirectBlog). TigerDirect uses this YouTube review channel to feature products that TigerDirect also sells. Top Review Shop Reviews TDK WR700 Wireless Headphones: “A Revolutionary Step up From the Conventional Wireless Sets of Yesteryear”

The Top Review Shop website posted a very in-depth review of the TDK WR700 wireless headphones that use Kleer technology to stream uncompressed, lossless, CD-quality audio wirelessly. The review, which has some impressive photographs as well, is broken down into numerous sections: Design, Packaging and Accessories, Specifications, Technical Background, Hands-on Usage, Fit Comfort & Isolation, Sound Quality, and the final opinion. The author goes into great detail and uses his experience with headphone technology to his advantage when describing and comparing the TDK WR700 wireless headphones. There’s a great line about the combination of Kleer and TDK technology: “Overall, the user-friendliness of the WR700 and the Kleer technology in general is extremely impressive and a revolutionary step up from the conventional wireless sets of yesteryear.” Here’s a longer excerpt where the author tests the range and is impressed:

“What is most surprising about the operation of the headphones once they are powered on and synced is the complete lack of interference. The Kleer system delivers what it promises – cordless phones, microwaves, and wireless networks have absolutely no effect on the Kleer signal. Moving towards the extremes of the WR700’s 30ft range, which usually results in a dramatic increase in static with other wireless sets, is absolutely drama-free with the WR700s.”

The review gives the TDK WR700 a 4 out of 5 rating and gives it a Top Review Shop On-Target Award. Very impressive!

Embedded NOW Blog: Mercedes Goes for Kleer Audio - “The choice for Mercedes is a good match”

Good article on the recent news about Mercedes using Kleer wireless audio technology in Embedded Computing Design’s “Embedded NOW” blog. The author, who clearly states that he is a Bluetooth proponent, realizes that when it comes to listening to wireless music, Bluetooth is less than ideal. Bluetooth may be fine for talking on the phone, but it doesn’t deliver uncompressed CD quality audio for optimal music listening. The article also includes a great illustration for an in-vehicle wireless audio/video display system. Here's an excerpt from the article:

“The choice for Mercedes is a good match – most cabin occupants are likely to be audiophiles and not that price sensitive. Mercedes is providing Kleer-enabled headsets, or there are third-party options from AKG, Sennheiser, and TDK which are completely interoperable. There are a couple other advantages to Kleer besides the 1.4Mbps audio rate that are interesting in this application.

Kleer allows pairing to multiple receivers from multiple sources, so more than one occupant can listen to the same audio stream from a single source for instance.
It supports audio source selection and basic remote control functions from the headphone.
It coexists with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on the 2.4 GHz band.
It has 10-25m range.
The SMSC KLR3012 receiver chip implementation has 20 mW power consumption, meaning longer headphone life between charges.”

AVguide.com Reviews Sennheiser RS 180 Wireless Headphones: "A Darned Good Headphone—Without Wires"

Great review of the Sennheiser RS 180 wireless headphones on AVguide.com. Reading it reminded me of a wine sommelier: someone who not only knows wine but can expertly describe many of the subtleties that differentiate the wine and what makes it so special. To quote the author, “Let’s get right to it: these are pretty darn good headphones, wireless or wired.” He mentions that the Sennheiser RS 180 wireless headphones use Kleer wireless audio technology, which is how the wireless headphones are able to deliver Sennheiser quality audio without the wires. Here's an excerpt from the review:

“The great thing about these Sennheisers is that you have to look to find the flaws—they don’t hit you over the head. And with a list price of $379, which for all intents and purposes includes a headphone amp, the RS 180s offer a good value. Grado (SR 325is) and AKG (K 702) offer headphones at around this price point on the street that are quite different as well as very good (more midrange focused, more vivid). Shure offers a less expensive and superb headphone (SRH 840), which has broad similarities to the RS 180s. But all these headphones need an amp, so the price difference isn’t what you might think, and in some cases favors the Sennheisers. And of course none of these conventional headphones is wireless.”

The “Bottom Line” is worth calling out where the author compares the Sennheiser RS 180 wireless headphones to wired headphones. Everyone accepts that wired is supposed to be better, but the author argues that with the technology available today, the concept of wired being better at this price point should be reevaluated.

I also enjoyed seeing the author’s rating system, which he uses consistently when reviewing headphones on his personal blog. Here’s how he rated the Sennheiser RS 180’s:

Midrange: 8.5
Bass: 8
Soundstaging: 10

SlashGear: Mercedes adds Kleer wireless audio to E-Class and S-Class

When a high end automotive manufacturer needs a wireless music system, what technology do they choose? Kleer wireless audio technology, of course. I think this takes the idea of mobile wireless to a whole new level. The announcement (see the link below to the entire press release from SMSC) was picked up by numerous websites. Here’s an excerpt from SlashGear’s article:

“We’ve been banging on about Kleer and their CD quality Bluetooth-busting audio technology for ages now, and so it’s good to see it trickle through into more mainstream platforms. Mercedes has announced that Kleer-based audio systems will be used in its 2010 E-Class and S-Class cars, offering a choice of two audio streams from in-headrest LCD displays.

Because of Kleer’s multipoint technology, up to five sets of headphones can be paired with any one transmitter, and since it’s not infra-red like other in-car audio systems it doesn’t require line-of-sight and won’t be overcome on sunny days. TouchGen Reviews Sennheiser MX W1 "True" Wireless Earbuds: " Walking around at home without thinking about cords is marvelous"

I haven't seen any Sennheiser MX W1 true wireless earbuds reviewed in a while (the newest wireless headphones from Sennheiser, the RS 160, 170, and 180 have been garnering a lot of attention lately) so I was pleased to see this review on TouchGen.

Quick explanation about why the word "True" is in quotes. Picture this: There is no wire from the transmitter to the earbuds and there is no wire connecting the left earbud to the right earbud. Some wireless earbuds are still tethered together but, because there is no wire connecting the Sennheiser MX W1 wireless earbuds, they are truly wireless.

The reason they can achieve this is because they use Kleer wireless audio technology. Kleer transmits uncompressed, lossless, CD-quality, digital stereo audio. So even though the earbuds aren't connected with wires, you still hear stereo sound as the left wireless earbud receives and plays the left-side stereo sound, and the right receives the right-side stereo sound. Sennheiser then went ahead and used some groundbreaking audio technology in them as well, so the sound is impressive. Here's an excerpt from the review:

“When using the MX W1 with either a fixed device or a concealed device it is absolutely brilliant. When it rains in Sweden it truly rains, but thankfully I could use the earphones with my iPad or iPhone with them protected in a bag. Using the MX W1 in this way is great, although I would like to have volume controls, and play/pause to make it perfect. Using it with a television or computer at home it shines the most. Walking around at home without thinking about cords is marvelous. Listening to music while using the computer, playing the Wii or listening to podcasts while cooking is a pleasure without wires.”

Positive review of the Opera S5T RX1 on the Digital Versus website. The Opera S5T RX1 uses Kleer wireless audio technology to transmit uncompressed, lossless, CD-quality, digital stereo audio. Basically, it can convert any iPod speaker into a wireless speaker. Simply connect the transmitter to your iPod and attach the receiver onto the iPod speaker. Then sit back, and control your songs without the wires. Here’s an excerpt from the review:

Guardian Reviews TDK WR700 Wireless Headphones: “Sounded much better than I expected”

The Guardian newspaper recently reviewed the TDK WR700 wireless headphones that use Kleer wireless technology. The reviewer was initially worried about reviewing wireless headphones because his past experience with these products has been unsatisfactory. But he finds that Kleer technology is different in that it transmits lossless, uncompressed, CD-quality, digital stereo audio. And you can share your music with three other people who are using Kleer technology-based earbuds/headphones. Here’s an excerpt from the Guardian review:

“TDK's Life on Record WR700 wireless headphones sounded much better than I expected, but I admit I'd feared the worst: wireless headphones are not generally known for high fidelity. TDK has got close by following Sennheiser and using the Kleer (PDF) wireless system, which can carry full CD-quality sound. This is impressive, and depressing. As with MP3 files, you need clever technology to get the sound quality back to the level that you could easily have started from. With the WR700 headphones, the benefit is that your movements are no longer encumbered by a physical wire from your MP3 player, hi-fi, laptop or whatever – basically, anything with a headphone socket. And in general, the greater the distance between you and your source, the nicer it is to be wireless.”

Positive reviews of the Sennheiser RS 160, 170, and 180 wireless headphones that use Kleer wireless audio technology on the B&H website. The reviewer is surprised (this seems to be a common theme) by the Kleer wireless audio technology as he is used to listening to music using Bluetooth or comparable wireless headphones. Kleer technology stands apart from that crowd because it delivers uncompressed, lossless, CD-quality, digital stereo audio. Read this great review of the Sennheiser wireless headphones and see if you can’t be convinced about the advantages of the Kleer wireless audio technology. Here’s an excerpt:

“Over the last few years here at B&H, I've done my fair share of hands-on headphone reviews. However, I haven't really spent much time looking at the wireless options that are available. To be honest, I've never really had a great experience with various wireless headphones in the past. NOTE: While the reviewer has a strong grasp of Kleer technology, he inadvertently makes one error that needs correcting. He points out correctly that up to four Kleer technology-based wireless earphones/headphones can be associated to one transmitter. However, he made the incorrect assumption that in order for four people to listen to the same music, they need to be using identical Kleer technology-based products. Not true. You can associate any Kleer technology-based wireless earphones, regardless of the manufacturer or regardless of the product line. This means you can associate Sleek Audio wireless earbuds to the Sennheiser transmitter, or associate a Sennheiser wireless headphone with a DigiFi transmitter.

I always did like SlashGear. Now I like it even more. SlashGear points out that the Kleer-based RX1 iPod transmitter can be used with the new iPad. Now, granted, there is an initial warning message because the RX1 wasn’t designed for use with an iPad. However, you can use the RX1 to listen to any Kleer-based wireless earbuds/headphones. Here’s an excerpt from the SlashGear article:
