Put This On, a web series about dressing like a grown up. I thought this was a great idea (I have no fashion sense) until I was watching Episode 1 - Denim and he talked seriously about $500 for a pair of jeans. So much for dressing like a grown up, if I have to spend that much money on a single pair of pants I have no interest in it.

Why Nerds are Unpopular. Long but worth the read.

I'm suspicious of this theory that thirteen-year-old kids are intrinsically messed up. If it's physiological, it should be universal. Are Mongol nomads all nihilists at thirteen? I've read a lot of history, and I have not seen a single reference to this supposedly universal fact before the twentieth century. Teenage apprentices in the Renaissance seem to have been cheerful and eager. They got in fights and played tricks on one another of course (Michelangelo had his nose broken by a bully), but they weren't crazy.

Yesterday at 12:50pm I lost my internet connection. The cable modem had no signal and I figured something happened out on the pole (there's a tree out there bent over from the weight of the snow). Today a Comcast tech showed up to have a look. Turns out that something weighed enough that it physically broke the connector that connected my span of coax to the tap out on the pole in the back. He replaced it quickly and cheerfully (why he was in such a good mood in this weather I'll never understand) and all is well now, internet restored. He also seemed happy when I offered him some Halloween candy in appreciation (at one point he borrowed my bow-saw to trim part of the tree, in the blowing blizzard we have going on so I was more than happy to offer...)

Snow update: while I had not quite 11" of snow on the back deck at noon, not 4 hours later and I am at a solid 18". No sign of it slowing or stopping.

And my cable internet went out (I have a Sprint 3G USB modem I am using.) And the dish is too covered with snow to get reception. Looks like DVDs and books tonight!
