List Options Revamp: Email Item List and Change Password

We have revamped list option panel. Click the new "More Options" link to reveal two new options: Email Item List and Change List Password.

Email Item List

There is a number of uses for this feature. You can use it to send your item list to your handset or PDA for "offline" viewing.

Or you can set up an "Email to SMS" forwarding at your cell phone provider's site.

Change List Password

Ok, we admit this feature should have been here right from the start. But [here comes the cliche] nobody's perfect.

Use it to set, change or remove password from your list.

Regarding Netvibes support

Apparently lots of people request Netvibes support. No promises yet but in upcoming weeks I will be looking into possibility of creating a Knotler Netvibes widget. Btw, their UWA looks very solid and impressive.

Bugfix Roundup #2

Here's another batch of fixes and tweaks:

BUGFIX: backslash symbol in items names was misbehaving
BUGFIX: was not able to drop dragged item if there was single item in the list
BUGFIX: dragging and dropping an item during autorefresh no longer clears the list
BUGFIX: adding consecutive items very quickly sometimes their order was messed up and some were not shown
BUGFIX: [iGoogle] bad behavior when list password was incorrect
BUGFIX: [iGoogle] fixed incorrect behavior in IE and Safari that was caused by security restrictions (cookies from iframe)
TWEAK: added iPhone detection and special stylesheet to improve experience
TWEAK: notices and error messages now autohide after 10 seconds

Two Issues: iPhone and SMS

We have been receiving vast amount of feedback on various topics lately. Thank you all!

However there are two issues that clearly stand out from the rest: iPhone usage and lack of SMS. Let me address them here one by one:

iPhone

Some iPhone users have reported that text in Knotler is too small to read on its screen. The trouble is that since I live in Europe Steve does not think I'm worthy enough to have it. And frankly speaking I'm not too psyched up the device to go through all the eBay and unlocking hassle.

However I will try to do my best to make necessary adjustments as outlined in this Apple document. (kindly suggested by Knotler visitor)

I would also appreciate if some iPhone user with a bit of spare time on his/her hands would volunteer to help me in ironing out iPhone support (preferably with access to ICQ, MSN or Skype). Just leave a comment on this post if you would like to help.

SMS

Sending and receiving your shopping lists via SMS was the feature we drooled for even before we started developing Knotler. As we though user should be able to add items to lists by sending SMS. He/she should also be able to receive complete list via SMS. Much like Google Calendar updates.

However the sad reality is that we're not Google. We don't have neither technical or financial resources to handle SMS infrastructure nor credibility to persuade service providers to give us free SMS.

Some people suggested using Twitter for updates. It's a great looking service but it requires registration to send or receive messages. This solution would violate our unwritten philosophy of not requiring people to register where registration is not absolutely necessary. So it's a NO GO for Twitter-based solution.

Bottom line is that we want SMS no less than you do and we're doing our best to find a free (hey we're not exactly mining gold here) SMS gateway service provider. Any tips would be very appreciated.

New Feature: Tips and Shortcuts

Two things:

First. We've replaced those bulky "instructions" below "Add new item" field with the elegantly rotating nonintrusively short tips.

Second. We've added a keyboard shortcut. Now hiting A or T on your keyboard will focus on item addition field ready to type in.

BUG: Everything after "&" in item description was being eaten up
BUG: HTML entities like < and > symbols are now properly encoded
BUG: Autosuggest now inserts special symbols correctly
BUG: [m.knotler.com] Refreshing page or going back in mobile version does not rpeat previous action
BUG: Revised Windows Mobile IE browser detection and fallback to non-AJAX operation on a non-mobile version of Knotler
TWEAK: Revised automatic "small screen" stylesheet to hide many non-essential parts and save screen space
TWEAK: [m.knotler.com] Removed "action" messages like "Items was added" from mobile version since it was unnecessary clutering precious screen space
TWEAK: [m.knotler.com] Reverted back to large item buttons to make them useful on touch-screen devices

New Feature: Autosuggest

Using Knotler frequently just got easier as we've implemented an autosuggest feature. Just start typing item description and list of suggested items will pop up.

Items are ordered by frequency they have been added to your lists in the past so the most important ones are displayed first.

Once you see the item you want in the autosuggest dropdown hit TAB to select it. Or use your your mouse. Simple.

New Feature: List items now dragable

Frankly speaking the old method of reordering items in lists was ... well quite retarded. That's why we've made items to be dragable. Just grab those carrots and drag besides other vegetables where they belong.

New Feature: Knotler as an iGoogle gadget

iGoogle is an awesome tool. That's why we've created an iGoogle gadget for Knotler. Just click icon on www.knotler.com and it will be added to your iGoogle homepage. You will have to enter your list name and password to activate it.

That's cool because you'll never miss your shopping requests from those back at home even if they don't remind you. You can even have several instances of Knotler on your iGoogle page.
